Floatin' Powa News Service: Enough Linkage to Overthrow 3 Dictators & an Igor ~

A different perspective at the MEMRI Blog:
The Iraqi daily Al-Sabah al-Jadid, which has a pro-Kurdish orientation, claims that what is happening in Tehran is fundamentally not connected to the results of the presidential elections, but that the events reflect the desire of the country's opposition leaders for "a public death" rather than being the victims of secret and revolutionary trials planned by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to liquidate them once and for all.

BBC's Coverage of the Iranian Uprising
We have this daily cry now from the roofs of Allahu Akhbar - God is Great - it's an opposition protest and night after night it seems to get louder and longer. Tonight was the loudest and longest I've heard, and that really symbolises and shows you the mood of the opposition here. Whatever happens, whatever the government is putting up against them, they seem more and more determined to press on.

Pro-Iran protests held in US cities
Green-clad protesters amassed in Los Angeles, New York and at the gates of the White House in Washington on Saturday, an echo of the mass uprisings that continues to convulse Iran. Protesters expressed their solidarity with their Iran-based counterparts and called on the United States and President Barack Obama to "Stand with Iran," as one placard put it. Waving placards imploring Obama to "support us, the people," protesters called for the June 12 elections -- which the government claims was won by the incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad -- to be annulled.

Response to Obama
Moshe Feiglin, former candidate for Prime Minister of Israel and head of the Manhigut Yehudit (Jewish Leadership) faction of the Likud party, has delivered an address of his own. It comes in response to the two major international diplomatic speeches of the past two weeks - those of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, and mainly, of U.S. President Barack Obama.
Feiglin responds to Obama's speech
A word of explanation: the White House officially released a photograph of Obama speaking on the telephone with Netanyahu--the soles of Obama's shoes are the most prominent image in the shot, raised up on the desktop--Obama has a look of arrogant contempt on his face. In the Muslim Arab world, to display the soles of one's shoes is the very worst act of contempt a man can show someone he hates. To Americans it looks like Obama is just relaxing. But the Arab world understands the message, presumably as well as the White House PR experts.
The Text of Feiglin's Speech:
President Obama, both here in Israel and in your land, your obvious attempt to degrade Prime Minister Netanyahu and the State of Israel has been interpreted as an endeavor to find favor in the eyes of the Arabs. After all, Moslems admire those who dare show their enemies the soles of their shoes. U.S. Raises White FlagBut there is something much deeper here than just a cynical sacrifice of Israel in exchange for American interests in the Arab world. The real significance of your Cairo speech and your declared Mid-East policy is that eight years after 9/11, the United States – under your leadership – has raised a white flag before radical Islam, has joined the evil axis, and is at the forefront of the attack against the State of Israel. The entire world looks on as the president of the United States bows and acquiesces to cruel dictators - while he simultaneously tramples the Israeli prime minister who is showing signs of weakness – in a decidedly uncivilized manner.

W.Va. energy industry under attack
The West Virginia Chamber of Commerce is urging the state’s congressional delegation to speak out against a war on domestic energy that is being waged by the new leadership team in Washington.

Leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives are advancing climate change legislation that will impose new regulations and lead to substantial hikes in energy prices, particularly for electricity generated from coal-fired power plants. H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (ACES Act), is being considered by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Among the key provisions in the 932-page legislation are ones to reduce emissions of “global warming pollution,” establish a cap-and-trade system, and encourage carbon capture technologies.

In addition, several departments of the Obama Administration have initiated regulatory actions against the state’s coal mining industry, and these actions pose serious implications for the continued viability of much of the mining and mine-related jobs in our state.

N.Korea accuses Obama of nuclear war plot
North Korea has accused US President Barack Obama of plotting a nuclear war on the communist nation by reaffirming a US assurance of security for South Korea, the North's state media said.

In a first official response to last week's US-South Korean summit, the state-run weekly Tongil Sinbo said in its Saturday edition Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak "are trying to ignite a nuclear war".

"The US-touted provision of 'extended deterrence, including a nuclear umbrella' (for South Korea) is nothing but 'a nuclear war plan,'" Tongil Sinbo said.

Report: N. Korean ship headed for Myanmar

A North Korean ship that the United States is shadowing is likely headed for Myanmar, South Korean television reported on Sunday. YTN channel quoted a South Korean intelligence source as saying the final destination of the Kang Nam looks to be Myanmar, after leaving a North Korean port on Wednesday. North Korea has raised tensions in the region in the past months by test-firing missiles, restarting a plant to produce arms-grade plutonium and holding a May 25 nuclear test, which put it closer to having a working nuclear bomb.

Police disperse protesters after clashes in China
Hundreds of baton-wielding police dispersed protesters and cordoned off a city hotel in central China Sunday after a young man's mysterious death sparked unrest, a local official and a witness said. About 1,000 people had gathered in Hubei province's Shishou city since Friday, angered by the death of 24-year old Tu Yuangao, whose body was found Wednesday evening in front of the hotel, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Xinhua said Tu worked as a chef at the hotel and some residents believed he was killed by gangsters or by the hotel's boss, who is related to the city mayor. More than 200 people were injured in the clashes between police and residents outside the hotel, according to a Hong Kong-based rights group, the Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy.

Militarization of Space
On June 17, immediately after the historical ninth heads of state summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Yekaterinburg, Russia on the preceding two days, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Chinese President Hu Jintao announced that their nations were drafting a joint treaty to ban the deployment of weapons in outer space to be presented to the United Nations General Assembly.

A statement by the presidents reflected a common purpose to avoid the militarization of space and said: "Russia and China advocate peaceful uses of outer space and oppose the prospect of it being turned into a new area for deploying weapons"

The Russian government has intensified its attempts to perfect the nation's past. The Defense Ministry posted an academic article on its Web site arguing that Hitler's territorial claims on Poland were "moderate" and "can hardly be referred to as unsubstantiated." After Poland rejected these claims, seeking "to gain a great power status," the article went on, it was only natural that Germany would attack -- starting World War II. When the article became the subject of news coverage, sparking discussion at home and abroad, it was removed from the site.

Obama Defends Proposed New Agency

If You Can't Fire Them, Co-Opt Them

It’s been a tough week for Inspectors General. News of President Obama’s firing of Gerald Walpin, an act that stinks of crony protectionism on the part of the White House, was followed by the revelation that another Inspector General were given the boot by the International Trade Commission. Then we find that the TARP watchdog, Neil M. Barofsky, was challenged by the Treasury while he was investigating those fabled AIG bonuses:

Department lawyers had sent a message to Barofsky, special inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, suggesting that lawyer-client privilege could restrict some of his inquiries. Within a day, Barofsky was assured there would be no impediment to his audits, and all requested documents were provided to his office. But the proximity of the department’s challenge to Barofsky’s investigation has raised concerns about the timing of the two events. And though the matter was resolved for the AIG inquiries, it leaves open the possibility of conflict in the future as audits of the massive program multiply. Asked why Barofsky’s legal authority was challenged by the department just as the AIG inquiry began, Treasury Department spokesman Andrew Williams said: “It is entirely a coincidence.”

Soros Pledges $100 Million to Charities in Ex-Soviet Republics

George Soros is pledging $100 million to charities in the former Soviet republics, eastern Europe and the Balkans to help counteract the effects of the global recession. The money will be distributed in 20 countries based on recommendations by local Soros foundations. The charities could include anything from cultural institutions at risk of closing to helping families buy lunches in schools, according to a Soros spokesperson.

The FT, which broke the story, carries this statement from Soros:

"The political risk is very severe and the rise of the chauvinistic, xenophobic far right is a disturbing development," said Mr Soros, in a reference to the advances made by extremist parties in the recent European parliament elections, including Jobbik in Hungary, the Slovak National Party and the Greater Romania Party."The EU must do more in terms of providing support, including financial support. The International Monetary Fund programmes [launched in Hungary, Ukraine, Latvia and about five other countries] are very severe in terms of cutting budgets. The EU must solidify support for EU values," said Mr Soros.

The Curious Case of the $134.5 Billion Briefcase
Whisking sham bonds through the Alps...
A funny thing recently happened at the Italian-Swiss border. Italian authorities found a briefcase filled with $134.5 billion in U.S. government bonds. While this now appears to be merely a massive counterfeiting case, initial worries were that a major nation clandestinely attempted to unload a staggering sum of genuine U.S. dollar securities.

Hiram Monserrate likens himself to Jesus

A chief figure in the fight for the state Senate on Saturday invoked Jesus Christ while another proclaimed himself the target of a political "jihad."

Sen. Hiram Monserrate (D-Queens), who briefly aligned himself with the Republicans before jumping back across the aisle to deadlock the Senate 31-31, appeared with other lawmakers at the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network.

Speaking on Sharpton's radio show, Monserrate commented, "You know, I'm never gonna compare myself to anyone in the biblical context."

And then ... he did.

"I remember Jesus himself, when he saw that in the temple there were merchants setting up shop, [he] began to turn over a few tables along the way ... to get the people's business done right," Monserrate said.
