It Takes a Potemkin Village to Raise a President, You Idiots

Thanks to James T Kirk for this image

OK..... I know some of you are going "WTF is POTEMKIN VILLAGE ?" (for those of us from NYC.... no, it is not a Cadillac dealership, LOL)

Potemkin villages were purportedly fake settlements erected at the direction of Russian minister Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin to fool Empress Catherine II during her visit to Crimea in 1787. According to this story, Potemkin, who led the Crimean military campaign, had hollow facades of villages constructed along the desolate banks of the Dnieper River in order to impress the monarch and her travel party with the value of her new conquests, thus enhancing his standing in the empress's eyes.

What's Up Hillary's Sleeve?

(hat tip DJ QBurn)

June 07, 2008

By Dick Morris and Eileen McGann

Why won’t Hillary just concede that she has lost and pull out of the race? Why does she persist in keeping her delegates in line for her and not releasing them to Obama? Why does she feign party unity while, in fact, undermining it?

The Clintons never do anything without a lot of thinking and planning. There is no benign explanation for her maneuvers. They have several options that they are deliberately keeping open by their increasingly awkward positioning. Here’s what they’re up to:

1. The Obama Stumbles Option

As Hillary says, June is “early” in politics when the convention is not to be held until the end of August, unusually late for a Democratic conclave. And, as Tip O’Neill says “a week is a long time in politics.” So is three months.

Rumors abound about incriminating material on Obama, the potential for misstep is amplified now that he adjusts to a new task of taking on McCain, who knows how many other preachers there are in the closet? Hillary’s skilled force of private detectives, who we once called the secret police, are doubtless diving into garbage dumpsters all over America to come up with whatever they can.

Hillary wants to be there to exploit any mistakes. She will be watching and waiting. Suppose Obama flubs a line on the campaign trail or damaging material emerges from the Rezko prosecution? Hillary will indicate her continued availability as an alternative. Remember that superdelegates can change their minds anytime they want to. Now they are leaving Hillary to back Obama, the winner, but they could easily go the other way. By not releasing her pledged delegates, she remains within striking distance of the nomination if an Obama faux pas leads to an exodus of superdelegates from his camp.

Obama and Jerusalem - FACT CHECK

THE SPIN:

Republicans said Obama had backtracked.

His campaign said no, he merely explained himself more fully.

THE FACTS:

Obama is trying to have it both ways, but there is nothing new about that.

So does President Bush. President Clinton did, too.

A 1995 U.S. law recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and ordered the U.S. embassy to move to Jerusalem from a neutral site in nearby Tel Aviv.

Using their presidential power, Clinton and then Bush have routinely suspended the relocation of the embassy while saying the U.S. is still committed to doing it. Bush issued the latest waiver just this week.

Damn right.

WalMart opens Halal Superstore in Dearbornistan

So...

when is Walmart opening
the Kosher Superstore in Borough Park?

New Wal-Mart caters to Arabs
By Delia Habhab - The Arab American News

Arabic-speaking employees, ethnic food and products highlight innovative store; local businesses concerned

DEARBORN — Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, has opened an innovative new supercenter here. The 200,000 square foot store will offer a special line of products geared toward the Arab American and American Muslim communities in the Metro Detroit area.

The store offers a variety of fresh, frozen and prepackaged Middle Eastern food, as well as halal meat, which is located in a closed- off area of the meat section. A special aisle dedicated to international foods features items like hummus, tahini, jarred pickles and olives, and spices used in traditional Middle Eastern dishes.

The new store has given a much-needed boost to the area by providing employment opportunities for hundreds of individuals. Over the past several months, more than 600 positions were filled as the store prepared to open. The store, which is still in the process of hiring, currently employs around thirty five Arab Americans.

Wal-Mart store manager, Bill Bartell, is optimistic about the store's presence in Dearborn.

"There is a great sense of excitement surrounding this store's opening," he stated. "So many of the organizations in Dearborn really contributed to the construction of this store, so we really feel as though this is a store for the community."

Wal-Mart's Professional Development Training Coordinator, Suehaila Amen, was hired to provide diversity training to the store's employees. She said that Wal-Mart has been a source of support to the Arab American community for years, by providing scholarships and sponsoring local community events.

"Wal-Mart is making a concerted effort to reach out to the Arab American and American Muslim communities," stated Amen. "They have had a strong presence in the local community for years, and have always supported our local organizations. Their presence in Dearborn provides us with a great opportunity to build bridges with one of the largest corporations in the world."

Wal-Mart began its process of researching the local market two years ago. They held numerous focus groups with local imams and potential customers, in order to gain a better understanding of the community and its needs.

"What we ended up with is a collaboration of different ideas from the local community," Bartell stated. "We really did our research and listened to the needs of the community, and we are excited to have these products in our store."

Amen said that the Dearborn Wal-Mart is committed to enhancing the shopping experience of its customers. As part of the store's efforts, Arabic-speaking sales associates will wear badges that read "I speak Arabic."

Despite Wal-Mart's ongoing efforts to reach out to the local community, concerns have arisen among small business owners regarding the increased competition that will occur after the new store opens.

Bartell maintains that Wal-Mart is not trying to replace the smaller markets; rather, it hopes to make the shopping experience more convenient. "We essentially would like to be a one-stop shop for our customers," he explained. "Rather than have them make several stops during the day, we are able to provide them with the essential items they need in one convenient store. We do not want to take the place of the local markets; we simply would like to make shopping more convenient for our customers, and offer them an alternative. Our prices are pretty much comparable to those of smaller stores."

The international aisle offers olive oil from Egypt, pickles from Palestine, apricot paste from Syria, spices from Jordan, olives from Lebanon, and sweets from Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

But at least one local storeowner is not worried about Wal-Mart.

"They don't have what we have here. They don't do what we do here," said Hussein Siblini, co-owner of the popular New Yasmeen Bakery.

He said Wal-Mart's selection of imported goods isn't quite as wide as what his and other stores offer in Middle Eastern food, and that the store’s management has promised to keep their prices above those of local markets, particularly with pita bread, which Wal-Mart buys directly from the New Yasmeen Bakery.

"We do not allow anybody to sell it at a lower price,” he said.

But Siblini said that starting Monday, the price of a bag of bread at the bakery will increase from $1.25 to $1.50, due to a steep rise in the cost of flour.

When it opened on Wednesday, Wal-Mart was selling bread at $1.32 a bag.

Siblini said he expects the store to increase the price accordingly.

Amen said the Dearborn Wal-Mart is not focusing exclusively on one ethnicity. In addition to the Middle Eastern items, the store will also carry a wide selection of Asian and Hispanic food.

"This particular Wal-Mart store is located in a very diverse setting, and we recognize the need to cater to the different ethnic communities in the Metro Detroit area," she said. "We're working with these communities to provide the basic necessities, without delving too deep into the market. We certainly do not want to infringe on the smaller business owners in the area."

Bartell said that the store will explore the possibility of expanding the Middle Eastern food section in the future, depending on how customers react to it.

The new store held a special preview celebration Tuesday, where hundreds of store employees gathered with district managers and several community organizations to kick off the store's opening. Wal-Mart presented several local organizations with checks of appreciation for their support of the company during the construction of the new store. Among the organizations who received recognition were the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, ACCESS and the Dearborn Police Charities.

A Grand Opening ceremony was held the next morning, which featured remarks from Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly. The program also included a dance performance by members of "The Fantastic Five," a hip hop ensemble from Ann Arbor, and an appearance by Detroit Red Wings performer, Karen Newman, who performed the National Anthem. After the ribbon-cutting took place, the store was officially opened for business.

"We are truly proud of what we have built here," concluded Bartell. "We started out with an empty building, and what we have now is an amazing supercenter."

June 6, 1944: When you go home, tell them of us & say: For their tomorrow, we gave our today.

Remembering June 6, 1944: D-Day
The Battle of Normandy

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon a great crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers in arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man to man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our home fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

~ Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower

President Reagan's speech at Pointe du Hoc, France
to commemorate the 40th anniversary of D-Day

(Hat tip: Teeny Spleeny)

We're here to mark that day in history when the Allied armies joined in battle to reclaim this continent to liberty. For four long years, much of Europe had been under a terrible shadow. Free nations had fallen, Jews cried out in the camps, millions cried out for liberation. Europe was enslaved, and the world prayed for its rescue. Here in Normandy the rescue began. Here the Allies stood and fought against tyranny in a giant undertaking unparalleled in human history.

We stand on a lonely, windswept point on the northern shore of France. The air is soft, but 40 years ago at this moment, the air was dense with smoke and the cries of men, and the air was filled with the crack of rifle fire and the roar of cannon. At dawn, on the morning of the 6th of June, 1944, 225 Rangers jumped off the British landing craft and ran to the bottom of these cliffs. Their mission was one of the most difficult and daring of the invasion: to climb these sheer and desolate cliffs and take out the enemy guns. The Allies had been told that some of the mightiest of these guns were here and they would be trained on the beaches to stop the Allied advance.

14 year old Afghani makes it out of Pakistani Pyrotechnic Institute in one piece

KABUL/PRAGUE -- Ever since he was caught three months ago in Afghanistan's Khost Province trying to carry out a suicide attack, 14-year-old Shakirullah has been pondering how he went from childhood in Pakistan to imprisonment in Kabul as an international terrorist.

Just one year ago, Shakirullah was living with his family in his native tribal region of South Waziristan, in Pakistan. The world Shakirullah knew in his village of Jandul revolved around his father, Noor Ali Khan, his mother, and three older brothers.

But Shakirullah's childhood in the rugged mountain region near the Afghan border came to a dramatic end last fall when his family sent him to a religious boarding school -- the nearby Salib madrasah in South Waziristan -- to receive instruction from conservative Islamist clerics.

The boy says teachers had taught him the Koran for half a year, then gave him an explosives-packed suicide vest and took him across the border into Afghanistan.

Shakirullah was picked up before he could blow himself up near U.S. troops, a mission that minders at his Pakistani madrasah assured him would bring him eternal life.

He is now being held at a facility run by Afghanistan's national intelligence service -- a detention center that keeps the teenager separated from older Taliban fighters, hardened criminals, and convicted murderers.

'Never Die'

When Afghan officials allowed RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan into the facility to interview Shakirullah, the boy describes a militant network in Pakistan that "forced" him to become a suicide bomber. The teen also directly implicates clerics at the madrasah as being part of that network.

"[I was attending] Salib madrasah. About 50 other people were attending," Shakirullah said. "The teachers were all from Pakistan. I was there for five or six months."

Shakirullah says that his instruction focused entirely on the Koran while he was at the madrasah. But he says the clerics started urging him to become a suicide bomber after he finished studying the Koran.

Shakirullah also says several of the teachers at the madrasah told him that he would "never die" if he sacrificed himself as a suicide bomber in neighboring Afghanistan.

According to Shakirullah, his teachers increased their pressure on him to commit a suicide-bomb attack after he asked to see his mother and father. He says his teachers told him he was not allowed to see his parents before the attack, but assured him that he would "come back" to see them afterward.

Shakirullah identifies a teacher at the madrasah named Azizullah as the person who transported him across the border into Afghanistan's Khost Province, urging him to blow himself up. He says Azizullah also provided him with an explosives-laden vest and instructed him to detonate the device when he got close to a group of U.S. soldiers.

"They told me to go to Afghanistan and carry out a suicide attack and that I would come back," Shakirullah says. "[Azizullah] didn't allow me to inform my family. I was forced to come [to Afghanistan]. When I finished [studying] the Koran, they told me, 'Now you carry out a suicide attack and you will come back to visit your parents.' Then I was brought to Afghanistan."

Close Call

Authorities in Kabul say troops from the Afghan National Army first noticed the teenager as he was walking alone toward a security checkpoint in Khost Province.

Observing that the boy was acting confused and was wearing a suspiciously oversized vest, the Afghan soldiers stopped Shakirullah from detonating the explosives. Instead, they took him into custody for questioning.

Shakirullah says his Afghan jailers have treated him well and that he has not been abused or tortured during the many interrogation sessions he has undergone.

He says that in the three months since his arrest, he has had plenty of time to think about how his teachers at the madrasah took advantage of his impressionable age.

Shakirullah now says the madrasah teachers lied to him -- giving him "bad advice and trying to kill me along with other Muslims."

As for the future, Shakirullah says he is happy just to be alive and safe. But he says he wants to continue his studies to better understand how he was led astray by the madrasah teachers. The boy also says that he misses his mother and wants desperately to see her again.

U.S. suspends move of embassy to Jerusalem - AGAIN

U.S. suspends move of embassy to Jerusalem
Published: June 4, 2008 at 6:00 PM
WASHINGTON, June 4 (UPI) -- As the American Israel Public Affairs Committee met in Washington, U.S. President George Bush Wednesday suspended plans to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.

The White House released a memo to the secretary of state ordering a six-month suspension in preparations for moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv.

The order also coincided with a visit to the Oval Office by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

"I hereby determine that it is necessary, in order to protect the national security interests of the United States, to suspend for a period of six months" plans to move the embassy, the president's memo said. "My administration remains committed to beginning the process of moving our embassy to Jerusalem."

The issue of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has always been a sticking point in the Arab world and negotiations for establishing a Palestinian state have included demands the city be returned to Palestinian control.

Israel captured the Old City in the 1968 Arab-Israeli War.

Iranian Dissident Journalist denied entry to UN "Food Summit"

THIN LIZZY ~ BAD REPUTATION

Ahmad Rafat, who is also a reporter for Voice of America, had his press pass confiscated and was barred from entering the UN Food and Agricultural Organization's (FAO) premises on June 3. Visiting Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad was due to hold a press conference at the event later the same day.

The Iranian-born Rafat believes the FAO barred him from attending the event at the request of the Iranian government.

The case has raised concerns about whether the Iranian government was essentially allowed to censor the international press.

The FAO later admitted Rafat to the summit, but only after Ahmadinejad had left the grounds. The FAO's director of communications, Nick Parson, offered an apology, saying the organization was "extremely satisfied" that the issue had been resolved.

But many questions remain, including why Tehran might be so concerned over a single reporter's presence at a public event and how such concern could translate into security guards at a UN facility turning the reporter away.

Radio Farda is a U.S. Congressionally funded joint venture between RFE/RL and Voice of America that broadcasts in Persian to Iran.

'You Cannot Enter'

Rafat says the trouble began when he arrived at the FAO building to begin a day of summit coverage that was to include attendance at Ahmadinejad's press conference. He showed his official press accreditation for the summit, submitted his bags for inspection, and walked through the metal detector.

"On the other side, there was a gentleman from the Italian police who was looking at a piece of paper in his hand and looking at me. He told me, 'You cannot enter,'" Rafat says. "I asked why, and he said the FAO did not want it. Then, after checking my ID, he said, 'I must ask you to leave the building.'"

When Rafat protested, Italian police explained that the UN building has extraterritorial status and, although they provide security, all decisions over who comes and goes are entirely the FAO's to make.

Rafat, who is also deputy director of the biggest private news agency in Italy, Adnkronos, immediately alerted the media. He said he was shocked at his exclusion.

So were those who heard about it.

"Some 60 politicians released communiques supporting me and condemning the decision of FAO," Rafat says. "After that came statements from the Italian association of the press, the Foreign Press Club in Rome, the trade union of Italian journalists, and the International Federation of Journalists in Brussels."

'Gravest' Of Mistakes

European Parliament Vice President Mario Mauro criticized the incident as the "gravest" of mistakes and said it risked giving the impression that an undemocratic country was imposing its will upon the international community.

Demonstrators outside the FAO summit in Rome (AFP)

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said he had ordered the head of the Italian delegation to the FAO to investigate the case.

Rafat says he believes Tehran might have pressed the UN agency to exclude him because of news he broadcast ahead of Ahmadinejad's trip to Rome. Those broadcasts, in Persian to Iran via Radio Farda, focused on the public controversy in Italy over the visit.

"I interviewed the director of an Italian daily ["Il Riformista"] who had organized a campaign against Ahmadinejad and who asked all Italian politicians not to meet [with] the Iranian president," Rafat says. "This appeal was immediately supported by the Italian foreign minister, who sent a letter to the newspaper saying he can't sign the appeal because he is a minister, but he morally supported it."

Rafat's reports detailed the Italian politicians' objections to Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust and his confrontational attitude toward the West. Rafat also interviewed people on the street, some of whom reflected generally hostile public opinion toward the visit.

"I was practically the only voice from Italy reporting to Iran through Radio Farda and VOA TV that the situation in Italy was not how the Iranian state press portrayed it," Rafat says. "I reported the truth that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had scheduled an official dinner and the only two heads of state not invited were Ahmadinejad and Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe. I think that made Tehran want to silence me."

But while Rafat was prevented from attending Ahmadinehad's press conference, the outcry over the incident has now created an international embarrassment for Tehran.

And, until the details of the move become clearer, a UN agency has been implicated in the exclusion. The FAO declined Radio Farda requests for an interview on June 5.

One Question Ready

Rafat says he had a question ready for Ahmadinejad -- one to which Iranians might genuinely want an answer.

"My question was: If Iran is the second-largest oil producer in the world after Saudi Arabia, and the second-largest gas producer after Russia, and has more than $40 billion in reserves, why does such a rich country have 7 million people living under the poverty line of less than $1 a day?" Rafat says.

Rafat says that Ahmadinejad has responded in the past in Iran with answers suggesting that "the economy is managed by the 12th imam," a religious leader whose return devout Shi'a await to usher in a golden age, or by challenging conventional wisdom by asking, "Who says inflation is a bad thing?"

"I don't think he could have given such an answer in front of an international audience of journalists, because everyone would have started laughing," Rafat says. "But I do wonder what he would have said."

U.S. Military Awards $80 Million Contract to Saudi Fugitive

(Hat Tip: The Missing Link)

At Northeast Intelligence Network (search links added here, bz):

5 June 2008:

The United States Department of Justice is seeking information for the whereabouts of Saudi "businessman" Ghaith PHARAON.

Anyone with any information on his location are requested to contact the FBI or a US Embassy in the applicable country, according to FBI spokesman Richard Kolko.

Perhaps the U.S. Justice Department should give the Pentagon a jingle, because PHARAON'S company - Attock Refinery Ltd., was just awarded a contract worth $80,452,502.39 by the U.S. military to provide jet fuel to military jets in Afghanistan. This year's contract is worth over $40 million more than the 2007 contract between PHARAON'S company and the U.S.

Why is Ghaith PHARAON wanted by the U.S. Department of Justice, you ask?

Remember the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) "scandal" that made headlines in the early 1990's? BCCI was an international bank founded in 1972 by Agha Hasan Abedi, a financier from Pakistan.

Throughout its first 20 year history, BCCI evolved into a mega-criminal enterprise involving the most despicable and elite - and the most despicably elite. Numerous governments, intelligence agencies, terrorists, politicians, lawyers and lobbyists all had some level of involvement with BCCI, which was finally shut down in 1991.

On July 29, 1991, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, who had been investigating BCCI for over two years, announced that a grand jury seated in Manhattan had indicted BCCI and its founder Agha Hasan Abedi on twelve counts of fraud, money laundering and larceny.

Ghaith PHARAON, the aforementioned businessman and owner of Attock Refinery Ltd.,$1.7 billion. was deeply involved with BCCI (and the CenTrust savings and loan scandal), which cost the U.S. taxpayers an estimated

If you think that's outrageous - wait - there's more.

PHARAON was an investor in Arbusto Energy, an oil company formed in 1977 by former President George Bush. Arbusto Energy was at the center of controversy after the September 11, 2001 attacks when it was revealed that one of the investors of Bush's company was none other than Salem bin Laden, the older, half-brother of Osama bin Laden.

Bin Laden's investment into Bush's company was made through James Reynolds BATH, co-owner of Arbusto Energy, and former director of Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI).

Guiltiness ~ Bob Marley and the Wailers

Guiltiness (talkin' 'bout guiltiness)
Pressed on their conscience. Oh yeah.
And they live their lives (they live their lives)
On false pretence everyday -
each and everyday. Yeah.

These are the big fish
Who always try to eat down the small fish,
just the small fish.
I tell you what: they would do anything
To materialize their every wish. Oh yeah-eah-eah-eah.

Say: Woe to the downpressors:
They'll eat the bread of sorrow!

Guiltiness
Pressed on their conscience. Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
These are the big fish
Who always try to eat down the small fish,
just the small fish.

I tell you what: they would do anything
To materialize their every wish.

But: Woe to the downpressors:
They'll eat the bread of sorrow!

Guiltiness. Oh yeah. Ah!
They'll eat the bread of sorrow everyday.

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.
