The End of Independence Day?

Back when I was in graduate school, on the last day of a seminar on Eastern European literature, the professor asked us what we thought characterized literature from that part of the world. We concluded that it was a sense of fatalism.

In fact, I think I was the one to first suggest that answer, for I recognized the fear and sense of futility. As an immigrant who came here at a young age with my parents from [1] Slovenia, then part of communist Yugoslavia, I knew firsthand the difference in attitudes that marks the American character. It provided a source of conflict between me and my parents, who, like many immigrants, doggedly clung to security and obscurity — while I read and dreamed of becoming a famous writer, and in the American way studied for a Ph.D. in spite of my age and early educational track.

But this was not uncommon. The parents of my Ukrainian friends carried a look of worried fear. The mother of one of my friends made it a policy to sign no “papers.” Her refusal to sign a form denied my friend a scholarship to become a dental hygienist — her dream. My Polish friend [2] Anthony Bukoski writes superb [3] short stories that capture the sense of a proud and brave people brutalized by totalitarian regimes and then made refugees. [4] Metod Milač, a Slovene, has written a riveting [5] account of his experiences of imprisonment by the Italian Fascists and German Nazis. A friend, whose late father had been a member of the [6] Slovenian Home Guard that had resisted the takeover by the communist Partisans, literally looked over his shoulder on the streets of Cleveland.

But those streets, once havens for [7] displaced persons, soon were destroyed by the utopian plans of collectivists and their agitators who urged the mobs to violence. The neighbors of my working-class neighborhood in Rochester, New York, complained from their front porches of increasing taxes, as they watched their property values deteriorate from the urban “renewal” and social decay of Johnson’s Great Society program. While a job at Kodak or a stint at the community college was the aspiration for the graduates of Benjamin Franklin High School in the mid-seventies, we believed that nonetheless it was possible for someone of talent to make it big. Like the [8] Partridge Family, they could take to the road, or at least enjoy owning a Camaro or Firebird — before the burdens of suburban family life took precedence.

We are seeing even those small marks of personal pride and independence — the freedom to rev up the engine on a Friday night — taken away. The muscle cars, under the diktat of the president and head of General Motors, are simply being eliminated and replaced by Yugo-style cars. The common retort to my lament is that such a boost to the male ego is silly in light of global warming and the greater good. What I find alarming, though, is that today’s generation submits to such authority.

And what about those from the upper-middle classes who had dreams of becoming doctors, executives, or entrepreneurs? As our president defies history and the Constitution by firing executives, citizens applaud.

Perhaps the most disturbing sight for me during the campaign — even more than Obama before the [9] mobs in Berlin — was the corn-fed Midwestern couple starring on one of Obama’s commercials. Those were the people that I grew up with — salt of the earth. But I winced as I heard them tell Obama about their personal problems with bills and health care while soft music played in the background creepily.

They wanted him to take care of them. True to form, while North Korea conducted [10] nuclear tests, Obama hailed his [11] credit card reform — as if we are incapable of reading the fine print or making a phone call on our own. While young [12] protesters longing for fair elections died in the streets of Tehran, Obama signed [13] a bill to protect us from cigarettes. Now Obama wants to tell us what medical procedures we should have, how much we should earn, and what kinds of cars we should drive.

What are the responses to complaints about such violations of our “unalienable right” to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”? Frequent proclamations by the White House [14] press secretary, by the secretary of state, and by the [15] president himself of “we won.” And during his June 23 press conference, when presented with criticisms about his response to Iranian protests, Obama royally [16] proclaimed twice, “I’m president.” So much for “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” Now it’s only the “people” who voted for Obama.

Perhaps what is most disturbing is the president’s unprecedented ridicule and dismissal of citizens — even for such things as their radio programs, by telling Republicans not to “[17] listen to” Rush Limbaugh. And apparently “open communication” from the White House is only for Democrats, for I received only two emails when I signed up for the list before I was dropped. In light of such developments, the Department of Homeland Security’s right-wing extremist [18] memo, with its unfounded warnings about those who disagree with the administration, portends ill for those who don’t march lockstep with Obama’s dictates.

Say what you want and ridicule me the way our president does, but this naturalized citizen is looking over her shoulder on this Independence Day.

Yesterday I saw Bibi. Was it really only yesterday? An eternity seems to have gone by since then. But only yesterday I was laughing in his company. Only yesterday I was home for a few hours, only yesterday I embraced Tuti. Only yesterday!

That's it. A battle has ended. We left the expanses of sand strewn with the bodies of the dead, filled with fire and smoke, and now we are once again in our own country. I am eaten up with worry for you. Perhaps in a few days, when it's all over and we're together again, perhaps then we'll smile… Tonight, and maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, we'll be shooting again, and again there'll be dead and wounded.

The Entebbe Rescue

On June 27, 1976, four terrorists forced an Air France Airbus to land in Uganda, in the heart of distant Africa. They quickly demanded that Israel release 53 convicted terrorists. The hijackers freed the French crew and non­Jewish passengers, while retaining 105 Jewish and Israeli hostages. A 48­hour deadline was set before executions would begin.

Faced with little choice, the Israeli government announced that it would enter into negotiations. This bought the precious time needed to consolidate a seemingly impossible military option. A new ultimatum was issued for 13:00 on Sunday, July 4.

The only airplane capable of a rescue operation was the C­130 Hercules. On July 1, the mission's overall commander, Brig. General Dan Shomron (later to become the IDF Chief­of­Staff), presented his plan to the IDF Commander and Israel's Defense Minister. The next day they all witnessed a full­scale dress rehearsal. The incredible was deemed possible.

Shomron's plan was based on several advantages that the Israelis had over the terrorists. The Entebbe airport at which the hostages were being held was built by an Israeli construction firm, which was able to provide Shomron with blueprints. Moreover, the released, non-Jewish hostages were able to describe the terrorists, their arms, and their positioning. As a result, the IDF decided to send in an overwhelmingly powerful force: over 200 of the best soldiers the army had to offer participated in the raid, all of them heavily armed.


Finally, the element of surprise was probably the biggest edge that Israel held. According to Shomron: "You had more than 100 people sitting in a small room, surrounded by terrorists with their fingers on the trigger. They could fire in a fraction of a second. we had to fly seven hours, land safely, drive to the terminal area where the hostages were being held, get inside, and eliminate all the terrorists before any of them could fire." The fact that no one expected the Israelis to take such risks was precisely the reason that they took them.

The aircraft took off at 13:20 on July 3 and headed south. Only then was the plan revealed to the Israeli Cabinet, which decided to let the operation continue. The lead Hercules carried the rescue force, led by Lt. Col. Yonatan Netanyahu. It also held two jeeps and the now famous black Mercedes, a perfect copy of dictator Idi Amin's personal car. Two additional Hercules carried reinforcements and troops assigned to carry out special missions, such as destroying the Migs parked nearby. A fourth Hercules was sent to evacuate the hostages.

The air package also included two Boeing 707's. One acted as a forward command post. The second, outfitted as an airborne hospital, landed in nearby Nairobi, Kenya. The Hercules was escorted by F4 Phantoms as far as possible-about one­third the distance.

Skirting thunderstorms over Lake Victoria, the Hercules transports neared the end of the 7­hour, 40­minute flight. A surprise awaited them: the runway lights were on! Despite this, they landed undetected at 23:01 (local time), only one minute past their planned arrival time.

The soldiers freed the hostages in a lightning attack, killing all eight terrorists in the process. Tragically, force commander Yoni Netanyahu was killed as he led the hostages toward the safety of the aircraft; additionally, two hostages were killed in the crossfire inside the airport. The other squads accomplished their missions in virtually the same time as during the "dry­run." By 23:59 the planes were on their way home. The operation, which was predicted to last one hour, in fact took only 58 minutes.

The mission struck a blow at international terrorism. "It resonated far and wide," Shomron later commented. "It showed that you could counter terrorism, and that it was worth cooperating to do so." As America celebrated its Bicentennial, the world was reminded that freedom is a value which must be fought for in every generation.

The Unanimous Declaration
of the Thirteen United States of America

When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. --Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former systems of government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the legislative powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the people at large for their exercise; the state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have we been wanting in attention to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies in war, in peace friends.

We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by the authority of the good people of these colonies, solemnly publish and declare, that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as free and independent states, they have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do. Our government and even most of our people have abandoned this document and pretty much everything it stood for. Happy 4th of July? I don't think so. But I'll go to the damn BBQ anyway and have a good time. However I will not be posting all sorts of patriotic happy 4th of July shit here or be saying GOD bless America all day.... can't do it.

God blesses the righteous, and removes his protection from the wicked. America has been anything but righteous and I know it. So the reality is GOD is going to judge America, and already is. So read this document. Read it again. And maybe one day we will recognize our America once more. Right now I am in exile in The Obamanable Seizer's Oymerika, and so are you. GOD forgive us for abandoning Him, and may the founding fathers and patriots who fought the war to create this country forgive us as well. I wonder if our children will.

Israel's President Invites Saudi King to Jerusalem
President Shimon Peres on Wednesday invited Saudi King Abdullah to come to Jerusalem, or meet him in Riyadh, to initiate discussions that would enable the implementation of a comprehensive peace between Israel and all the Arab states.

Peres spoke at an interfaith conference in Kazakhstan, addressing some 150 religious leaders from around the world, including a large delegation of imams, calling on King Abdullah to meet with him in Jerusalem, in Riyadh or in any other place “in order to fulfill his prayer for peace between all people, without differences of religion.”

He praised a 2002 Arab peace initiative, which offers Israel full normalization in return for a withdrawal from territory conquered in the 1967 Six Day War, a Palestinian state and an equitable solution to the Palestinian refugee problem. Peres quoted Jordanian King Abdullah II as calling the plan “a readiness for peace between the State of Israel and 57 Arab and Muslim states.”

The president also spoke about Islamist terrorism. “Thousands, if not millions of Muslims, have lost their lives at the hands of extremists that call the name of Allah,” Peres said. “In the Twin Towers of New-York, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists and atheists, all lost their lives as one.”

Meanwhile, Iranian delegates stormed out of the opening session of the interfaith conference as Peres began to deliver his address to the forum. The delegates returned to the conference hall after Peres finished speaking. One said the president was a repulsive Zionist figure whose “place was not here in a religious meeting.”

“[Peres] plunders land and occupies, and we are not willing to hear him,” an Iranian delegate added.

President Obama's magisterial vocal outreach to the Muslim world in Cairo on June 4 did not shake the extremist beliefs of the fundamentalists, an estimated 10 percent of 1.3 billion. That's 130 million scattered among 57 Muslim nations. "Amrika," in Arabic, and Israel, are dwedledee and dweddledum in the thousands of al-Qaida Web sites that provide the refuge of a virtual global caliphate for the millions of jobless Muslims in the rundown suburbs of Western Europe's major cities.

The next night, Vladimir and Estragon again meet near the tree to wait for Godot. Lucky and Pozzo enter again, but this time Pozzo is blind and Lucky is dumb. Pozzo does not remember meeting the two men the night before. They leave and Vladimir and Estragon continue to wait.

In potentially ominous news, Gazprom has entered an agreement with Azeri national energy company SOCAR to purchase Azeri gas at a price of $350/thousand cubic meters. Initial volumes of 500 mcm for 2010 are modest, but Gazprom is allegedly to be a preferential buyer (whatever that means) for gas from the second stage of the immense Shan Deniz field.

The price in the deal is very interesting, given that Gazprom (OGZPY.PK) is balking at paying the same price from Turkmenistan (admittedly the Azeri gas is closer to market, and should receive something of a premium). Indeed, recent reports tend to confirm my initial conclusion that the gas pipeline “explosion” in Turkmenistan was just a consequence of the Russian reneging on its contract to buy gas at $345 from the Turkmen, a price that seemed like a good deal at the time, but which looks very rich given the current market

Uranium One Undergoes a Resurrection

It seems that Uranium One has raised the stakes. It entered into an agreement to purchase half of another uranium mine in Kazakhstan, which will increase the company’s production in 2010 by 35%. In exchange for this ownership stake, Uranium One will issue 117 million shares and US$90 million to JSC Atomredmetzoloto, a Russian state-owned uranium miner (another US$60 million payment is contingent on whether certain tax issues can be worked out).

The other 50% of the mine is owned by JSC Kazatomprom, the Kazakh state-owned uranium miner, who also holds stakes in Uranium One’s other mines. Our perception is that Kazakh officials were sincere in their announcement that they would not change the terms of any contracts and they have already blessed the transaction. The transaction could be the reopening of Kazakhstan to capital and the house cleaning will only take part within the government and not harm those companies operating there.

Kazakhstan: Kashagan Costs To Be Significantly Cut
The consortium of international oil majors developing the Kashagan oil field in the Caspian Sea have decided to cut costs significantly, Kazakh state oil and gas company KazMunaiGas said Thursday.

"The global economic crisis has had a substantial impact on the global market, which will affect the [Kashagan] project participants' obligations," KazMunaiGas, or KMG, said in a statement.

"This decision is expected to significantly cut project expenditures for Kazakhstan and the Kashagan consortium members, while abiding by a development timeframe and deadline for the start of production at the [Kashagan] oil field."

The President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, stated today at the meeting in Akorda with the chairman of Subcommittee of Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives of the American Congress, Eni Faleomavaega, the "Kazakhstan Today" agency reports.

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress, said it’s unaware of an alleged call by the party’s youth league for the government to nationalize the country’s mining and manufacturing industries.

“I am not aware of that request having been made,” ANC spokeswoman Jessie Duarte said by mobile phone today. “This is the first I’m hearing of it.”

The Sowetan newspaper today reported that ANC Youth League President Julius Malema had urged President Jacob Zuma’s government to take control of the country’s mines and factories because of the “confusion” caused by the global financial crisis. The time has come for the government to transfer South Africa’s wealth to “the people as a whole,” the Johannesburg- based newspaper cited Malema as saying.

Most of you know I had a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery at the end of May. I am six weeks out of surgery, and I have been back to work since week two! What's Next? I can never return to the level of work I was doing prior to my bypass surgery. It is physically impossible, and I want to retain some form of life for myself and my friends. So I am going to offer to turn over this website to a person or group of people that are interested in managing it. We have received emails from hundreds of potential volunteers, but what is truly needed is one or more people that want to manage the site and the volunteers.

If we don't find a person or group to manage the site, I will do what I can to put together an internal team, but it is not a priority so it might be a few months.

Obama Administration Plans to Use NSA to Defend Civilian Agency
The Obama administration is set to revive a Bush-era program to use National Security Agency assistance in screening government computer traffic on private-sector networks, FOX News has confirmed.

The program will review only data going to or from government systems, Department of Homeland Security officials told the Washington Post, which first reported the story.According to the newspaper, the program has sparked controversy within the Department of Homeland Security because of uncertainty over whether private data can shielded from unauthorized scrutiny, how much of a role NSA should play and whether the agency's involvement in warrantless wiretapping under the Bush administration would draw criticism.

"We absolutely intend to use the technical resources, the substantial ones, that NSA has," the department's secretary, Janet Napolitano, told reporters in a discussion of cybersecurity efforts. "But...they will be guided, led, and in a sense directed by the people we have at the Department of Homeland Security."

In June of 2003, the commission issued its first report on the Continuity of Congress.1 In that report the commission unanimously recommended a constitutional amendment that would provide for filling mass vacancies or mass incapacitations in the U.S. House and Senate through temporary appointments until special elections could be held to fill the vacancies.

Without such an amendment, an attack might cause Congress to fall below the quorum requirement for conducting business and potentially disable Congress for many months until the numerous vacancies could be filled. The report spawned much debate in Congress, including many hearings and the introduction of a variety of amendments to address this problem.

OHIO: Minors' abortion records off limits, court says

In a split decision released Wednesday, July 1, the Ohio Supreme Court said the parents of a Cincinnati teen who had an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic do not have the right to other minors’ medical records.

The parents of “Jane Roe,” who had an abortion in March 2004 as a 14-year-old, filed suit against Planned Parenthood, alleging the clinic didn’t properly get parental consent for the abortion or notify authorities of suspected sexual abuse of a minor. Although the clinic staff called a man who Jane said was her father and received consent, it turned out that it was her 21-year-old soccer coach, John Haller, on the other end. Later police found that Jane had been sexually abused and impregnated by Haller.

The lawsuit claimed Planned Parenthood’s handling of Jane’s case was part of a pattern involving minors who had obtained abortions.

US suspends military relations with Honduras
The Obama administration said Wednesday it has suspended joint military operations with Honduras to protest a coup that forced President Manuel Zelaya into exile. The U.S. withheld stronger action in hopes of negotiating a peaceful return of the country's elected leader.

The Organization of American States, meeting in Washington, gave Honduran coup leaders three days to restore Zelaya to power — under threat of suspending Honduras's OAS membership. Afterward, several officials said the administration is still reviewing the possibility of cutting off U.S. aid.

Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said, "We continue to monitor the situation and will respond accordingly as events transpire."

Obama extends trade terms for Ecuador
The Obama administration late Tuesday extended favorable trade terms to Ecuador despite a plea from Chevron. Ecuador will continue to receive duty-free treatment and other preferential treatment under the Andean Trade Preference Act, according to a release from the U.S. Trade Representatives Office. Chevron is fighting a class action environmental lawsuit in Ecuador.

CHINA, along with other emerging economies, is trying to shape a new world order -- or, at least, a new financial world order.

Last month, it joined three other major emerging economies -- Brazil, Russia and India -- in a summit meeting in Yekaterinburg, Russia. This brought together the world's two most populous countries -- China and India -- plus Russia, the world's biggest country in terms of territory, and Brazil, the largest country in Latin America.

These four countries, which account for more than a quarter of the world's land area and more than 40 per cent of the Earth's population, were first put together and labelled BRIC by Goldman Sachs in 2001. It argued that these four were all developing rapidly and, by 2050, they could eclipse the combined economies of the current richest countries of the world.

Interestingly, Goldman Sach's BRIC concept caught on and the four countries began to hold meetings at foreign minister level before moving on to their first summit on June 16. At the end of the meeting, they made clear that such summits will be held every year, with the next one to be held in Brazil.

Few people outside Belgium have ever heard of KBC Bank. But the travails of this lender, based in Brussels, highlight the broader challenges Europe is facing by not having more fully confronted the deteriorating health of its financial institutions.

Since October, KBC Bank has had to seek government relief three times. Expanding the nation's use of nuclear power is seen by many as a key component of any strategy to fight climate change, and utilities are lining up to provide it. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has received applications from 14 companies to build and operate new nuclear power plants. Energy Secretary Steven Chu last week told utility executives that nuclear power, along with renewable energy and conservation, will be an important way to meet growing U.S. energy demand while cutting emissions of greenhouse gases.

The companies behind these projects, including Southern Co. (SO) and Duke Energy (DUK), are upbeat on their prospects, noting guaranteed long-term returns on investment and increasing acceptance of a need to replace coal-fired power plants and their emissions.

History sounds a cautionary note, however. Nuclear-power plants under development in Europe have come under fire for exceeding previously estimated costs, a fate that led developers to abandon several nuclear-power projects during the last U.S. nuclear build-out that ended in the early 1990s.

According to RPV Network, Lombard

was recently arrested by the FBI and charged with offering up his adopted 5-year-old African American son for sex to an undercover cop. Lombard admitted to molesting his own adopted son to the undercover officer in an online chat room under the user name “Perv Dad for Fun”. He invited the under cover officer to travel to North Carolina to rape his already-molested adopted son. Lombard faces 20 years in prison if convicted but is not eligible for the death penalty.

The video report says Lombard told undercover cops that he specifically adopted a black child because they are “easier to adopt” than white children. He also said that the abuse was easier to perpetrate when the child was too young to talk or know what was happening, and he had drugged the child with benadryl during the molestation. Lombard lived in the house with another homosexual, but waited until the partner was gone to perpetrate the abuse.

What a disgusting excuse for a human being. It doesn’t matter who did this to the child; it was extremely wrong. But as I alluded to before, perhaps because Lombard was a homosexual, the “mainstream” media seems to be keeping this outrageous crime very low-key…as they have done in the past when homosexuals have committed terrible crimes against children and other adults.

Research also indicates that the rate of molestation at the hands of homosexuals is higher than among heterosexuals.

Ancient mosaic comes out of hiding in Israel
Israeli archaeologists unveiled one of the largest and best preserved mosaics ever found in the country Wednesday, for only the second time since it was discovered more than a decade ago.

The 600-square-foot (56 square meter), 1,700-year-old Roman floor mosaic was found in 1996 during an archaeological dig in the town of Lod near Tel Aviv. In June 2008, the Iraqi Oil Ministry announced plans to go ahead with small one or two year no-bid contracts to Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total and BP — once partners in the Iraq Petroleum Company — along with Chevron and smaller firms to service Iraq’s largest fields.

These plans were canceled in September because negotiations had stalled for so long that the work could not be completed within the time frame, according to Iraqi oil minister Hussain al-Shahristani. Several United States senators had also criticized the deal, arguing it was hindering efforts to pass the hydrocarbon law.

Kazakhstan's president denied on Tuesday that his country is supplying Iran with nuclear material, according to Israel Radio. BTA Bank’s effort to restructure as much as $15 billion of debt may slow after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. resigned as an adviser to Kazakhstan’s largest lender.

BTA received a letter of resignation from New York-based Goldman Sachs, said BTA Chairman Arman Dunayev, who is also deputy head of the National Wellbeing Fund Samruk-Kazyna, which manages the state’s 75.1 percent stake in BTA. “It was a discussion between BTA Bank and Goldman Sachs regarding amendment of the existing contract,” Dunayev said by telephone in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s financial capital. “BTA Bank declined.”

BTA hired Goldman Sachs and UBS AG as restructuring consultants after the government took control of the bank in February. Kazakhstan, which holds 3.2 percent of the world’s oil reserves according to BP Plc, has spent 770 billion tenge ($5.1 billion) of oil revenue to prop up the economy and banking system after the global credit crisis cut off funding and the nation’s economic boom fizzled.

Huge artificial underground cave dating back to 1AD discovered
Jun. 30 - The largest artificial underground cave in Israel, has been exposed in the Jordan Valley in the course of a survey carried out by the University of Haifa's Department of Archaeology. The enormous cave covers an area of about one acre. It is 100 meters long, about 40 meters wide, and three meters high. It is located not far from Jericho.

The cave, which is supported by 22 giant pillars, was discovered in the course of an archaeological survey which the University of Haifa began in 1978. Prof. Adam Zertal, who headed the excavating team, believes the cave was originally a large quarry during the Roman and Byzantine era and date it back to around 1-600 AD. At a later stage it is likely to have been used as a monastery.

Various engravings were uncovered in the cave, including cross markings and symbols of the zodiac. The team also discovered Roman letters. Zertal believes the cave could be the site of Galgala from the historical Madaba Map ? a Byzantine mosaic map found in Jordan, which is the most ancient map of Israel.
A small gold vase that was seized from a German auction house has been held in the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz, by museum archaeologist Michael Mueller-Karpe, who had been asked to evaluate it. Both the auction house and the Iraqi government want the artifact, thought to be 4,500 years old and stolen from a royal grave in Iraq. “I hope that, by Thursday, we will reach an amicable solution on this issue,” said Mueller-Karpe.

But in fact, much of Obama's speech had a different sort of familiar ring. Most of his main arguments have been made before--not just by Obama himself, but by his predecessor. "Today I'd like to speak directly to the people across the broader Middle East," George W. Bush said at the United Nations on September 16, 2006. Like Obama, Bush explained that the United States is not at war with Islam.

Like Obama, Bush said that America respects the history and traditions of the Muslim world. Like Obama, Bush deplored the September 11 attacks and vowed to fight the tiny minority of Islamic extremists.

Bush also assured his audience that "freedom, by its nature, cannot be imposed. It must be chosen;" Obama said that "no system of government can or should be imposed upon one nation by any other." Bush lamented the "daily humiliation of occupation" suffered by the Palestinians; Obama said the Palestinians "endure the daily humiliations... that come with occupation." Bush assured Iran that he did not oppose their use of peaceful nuclear power; so did Obama.

Bush's 2006 speech, of course, was immediately forgotten--a non-event with no impact on America's image abroad.

Putin's surprise birthday gift for Communist leader

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has astonished the leader of the Russian Communist Party by presenting him with an unexpected birthday gift — an early Soviet edition of the Communist Manifesto.

Speaking to Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov and other party leaders, Putin described the ideas of the 1848 manifesto’s authors Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels as “interesting” and “important”, the press reported Monday.

“Marx and Engels examined these problems and spoke about cyclical crises, They started to examine the problems that we today call globalisation,” Putin told the meeting at his country residence on Sunday.

Obama Will Speak At Russian School Graduation
U.S. President Barack Obama will make a commencement speech to 1,000 guests at the New Economic School and hold talks with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, officials said, as details emerged of Obama's much-anticipated visit to Moscow on July 6 to 8.

Obama will discuss the economic crisis and security issues during the graduation ceremony at the school on July 7, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters.

"The speech will be an opportunity for President Obama to discuss areas of mutual interest between the United States and Russia such as nonproliferation, global security and economic growth," Gibbs said Thursday, according to a transcript published on the White House web site.

The graduation ceremony will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and be attended by about 1,000 people, said the New Economic School, a privately funded graduate school founded in 1992. "We are honored that President Obama will participate in our graduation ceremonies," school rector Sergei Guriyev said in a statement. "Our graduates, their families and the NES faculty, staff and alumni are looking forward to President Obama's address, particularly at a time when both the U.S. and Russian economies face such great challenges."

Gibbs said Obama would also attend a "civil society event" and a business forum during his visit. The forum of U.S. and Russian business leaders is scheduled for July 7 and is being organized by the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the American Chamber of Commerce.

Gibbs said he did not know which U.S. business executives might accompany Obama on the trip.

White House working on border troops plan

The Obama administration is developing a plan to seek up to 1,500 National Guard volunteers to step up the military’s counterdrug efforts along the Mexican border, senior administration officials said Monday.

The stopgap measure between the Defense Department and the Homeland Security Department, and comes despite Pentagon concerns about committing more troops to the border — a move some officials worry will be seen as militarizing the region.

Senior administration officials said the Guard program would last no longer than a year and would build on an existing counterdrug operation. They said the program would be mostly federally funded and draw on National Guard volunteers from the four border states.

Officials said the program would mainly use Guard members for surveillance, intelligence analysis and aviation support. Guard units also would supply ground troops who could assist at border crossings and with land and air transportation.

The Texas National Guard didn’t respond to a request for comment, but a spokeswoman for Gov. Rick Perry said no formal notification had been received Monday night from the White House or Homeland Security.

Obama: no "formal" decision yet about church, Gibbs says

Gibbs' answer used the word formal many times--a wiggle word, perhaps.

He replied, "No. He's -- there have been no formal decisions about joining a church. I think I've mentioned in here, in the past couple of weeks, that when he goes to Camp David, he has attended services at the chapel there. He enjoys the pastor there.

"They're not formally joining that church. And there have been no formal decisions on joining a church in this area. I will say, I think, one aspect of the article that is true, as I mentioned here in that same discussion, was the concern that the president continues to have, about the disruptive nature of his presence on any particular Sunday, in some churches around the area.

Adonai
is the plural of Adon, meaning “Lord, Lord, LORD, master, or owner” (the word Adon derives from a Ugaritic word meaning “lord” or “father”). In the Tanakh, the word Adon can refer to men and angels as well as to the LORD God of Israel (e.g., Exodus 34:23). God is called the “Lord of lords”(Deuteronomy 10:17) and Psalm 8:1 mentions God as “YHVH our Lord.”

The plural form Adonai, like the plural form Elohim, is regularly used with singular verbs and modifiers, so it is best to construe the Name as an “emphatic plural” or “plural of majesty.” When the plural is formed using a singular possessive ending (“my Lords”), it always refers to God, and occurs over 300 times in the Tanakh in this form.

The Masoretes ensured that the sacred Name of the LORD YHVH would not be taken in vain by putting the vowel marks for Adonai under the letters in the running text (ketiv). They did this to remind the reader to pronounce Adonai regardless of the consonants in the text (qere). However, Adon and Adonai also appear as Names of God in the Hebrew Masoretic text, and some of these will be listed here.

Hamas' dislike of the new force was evident in a statement from Khaled Mashaal, its exiled leader, appealing to Obama to remove Lt. Gen. Keith Dayton, the U.S. security coordinator in the region, under whose auspices the force is being trained. Mashaal claimed Dayton was "building an oppressive authority over the heads of our people."

The new forces are being trained in neighboring Jordan. Since 2008, four battalions totaling 2,100 men have deployed in the West Bank, the most recent this month, and another three battalions are to be added, bringing the total to around 3,600.

They have had their first real test in recent weeks, twice clashing with Hamas gunmen in the town of Qalqiliya. Five Hamas fighters and four members of the security forces were killed.

The West Bank's various security forces already number some 24,000 Palestinians including police. These forces were troubled in the past by corruption, overlapping mandates, poor training and damaging Israeli raids, and in recent years there have been repeated attempts to reform them.

The new force is different, says Dayton.

"What we have created are new men," he told a Washington think tank last month. "For the first time, I think it's fair to say that the Palestinian security forces feel they are on a winning team."

President Obama’s Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, stated that there were no agreements between the U.S. and Israel concerning Israeli settlements in the disputed territories.

“[I]n looking at the history of the Bush administration, there were no informal or oral enforceable agreements,” Mrs. Clinton remarked. “That has been verified by the official record of the administration and by the personnel in the positions of responsibility.”

No so, writes Mr. Abrams, a Middle East specialist, who was one of the American negotiators in 2003. “Not only were there agreements, but the Prime Minister of Israel relied on them in undertaking a wrenching political reorientation — the dissolution of his government, the removal of every single Israeli citizen, settlement and military position in Gaza, and the removal of four small settlements in the West Bank.”

In his WSJ piece, Abrams sets out the premise of President George W. Bush’s 2003 “Roadmap for Peace” between Israel and the Palestinians. Critics may have considered the Road Map unrealistic at the time — I certainly did — but it was clear enough. The U.S. endorsed Palestinian statehood, provided the Palestinians eliminated terror. In essence, this was it.

The settlements were to be frozen. This didn’t mean settlers couldn’t build new houses or apartments as their population grew; it meant settlements couldn’t expand externally.

Negotiating these principles during the spring of 2003 with the U.S., Abrams writes, was what enabled Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon to stand beside President Bush, King Abdullah II, and Palestinian prime minister Mahmoud Abbas at Aquaba, Jordan, in June, 2003, and say: “It is in Israel’s interest not to govern the Palestinians but for the Palestinians to govern themselves in their own state.”

During subsequent negotiations, the U.S. would drop all rhetoric about settlements beyond the 1967 “border” being illegal and come to regard the “Green Line” as exactly what it was: an armistice line where Arab and Israeli forces happened to stop fighting in 1949 at the end of the War of Independence (or the “Catastrophe” as the Arab side called it).

Abrams cites president Bush’s words in 2004: “In light of new realities on the ground, including already existing major Israeli populations centers, it is unrealistic to expect that the outcome of final status negotiations will be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949.”

Iran: Now the world's leader in jailing journalists
In just the last 13 days since the disputed June 12 election, Iran has become the world's leading jailer of journalists.

A report released Tuesday by the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran listed the names of 23 Iranian journalists who have been arrested and detained by the government. Additionally, more than 100 political personalities and members of the reformers' presidential campaigns have also been arrested. The group confirmed 31 dead (though only four named), many of whom were students like Neda Aghasoltan, now the face of the opposition movement.

The report also revealed that many of those arrested were detained in their own homes by plain-clothed police officers -- and many were not participating in protests when arrested.

The editor of a campaign newspaper for Mir Hossein Mousavi on Saturday accused the defeated presidential candidate of "causing" the death of Iranians in protests after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election, local media reported.

Amir Hossein Mahdavi, 27, told reporters gathered at the news agency he was also a member of the Islamic Revolution Mojahedeen Organization -- one of the key reformist groups backing Mousavi for the June 12 poll.

Several of its leaders as well as prominent reformists and journalists were jailed shortly after the election, which Mousavi has dismissed as a "shameful fraud."

So it was especially interesting that, at the annual meeting of the International Press Institute here in Helsinki, a major session was held on “Talking to Terrorists.” Do we? Should we? Is it really worth the danger to tell the American people — and others — about these strange new guerrilla/militant/radical terrorist groups that torment the “civilized” world?

First, meet Hamid Mir. Big, husky and dark-haired, the respected Pakistani TV reporter is the only journalist in the world to have interviewed Osama bin Laden three times. Importantly, his reports proved that the al-Qaida leader was, indeed, the mind and means behind 9/11.

“I asked Osama whether he had done 9/11,” Hamid told me, “and he told me to turn off my recording machine. Then he said, ‘Yes.’ But when I turned on my machine again, he said, ‘No.’ I reported the ‘Yes.’


“Then I told him that he was a bad Muslim, and that he would go to hell — like me! He asked me why and I said, ‘Because you kill so many Muslims.’ Meanwhile, his Egyptian aide, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was sitting there laughing.”

Then Hamid laughed, before he added with a grin: “Me? I just wanted to leave. I kept saying, ‘Can I leave? Can I leave?’”

Would he go back and find Osama again? He looked at me as if I were certifiably mad. Then he mentioned that, in Pakistan alone in 2008, there were 18 journalists killed and 30 kidnapped. “Now,” he added, “they’re even announcing the names of certain journalists they will kill.”

Similarly, Afghan President Hamid Karzai accused Pakistan of alleged relationship between ISI agency and the militants. Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at Pentagon, US Gen. David Petraeus, commander Central Command, US think tanks and media cartels, questioned the alleged relationship between ISI and the militant Talibans.

US And Russia Differ on Treaty for Cyberspace

The Door to Hell - Burning Gas Crater in Darvaza, Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is very rich in natural resources. Currently a sovereign country, Turkmenistan was part of the Soviet Union until 1991. It was during rule of Soviet Russia, back in 1971 when geologists were conducting gas drilling in Kara-Kum desert and discovered an underground chamber close to the village of Darvaza (known in Turkmen as Derweze, but sometimes also referred to as Darvaz). The discovery of the chamber was accidental and resulted in drilling rig collapsing, leaving giant gas crater filled with poisonous gases exposed to the world outside. The concentration of gases within the crater was high so nobody dared to go down there. It was then when someone came with an idea to light the gas in the crater on fire so as to burn it before the poisonous fumes engulf the nearby town of Darvaza.

The geologists thought the idea of burning the gas was smart and went ahead with lighting the crater on fire. As it turns out, the supply of quality natural gas below the crater is near infinite as the crater’s been burning since. At the time of this post, on June of 2009 the gas crater in Darvaza is still burning and has been since 1971 without interruption. No one can even imagine how much quality natural gas was burnt throughout the 38 years of the crater being on fire. No one can estimate how much more gas there still is. When they first lit the gas crater on fire, they thought the fire would go out after a few days. It’s been more than a few day, it’s been more than a few weeks or months. It’s been decades and the gas crater is burning just as it did the day it was first lit. Putting all economical loses from wasted natural gas aside, imagine the ecological impact this burning gas has cause during decades of non stop burning!

Word of the Week: "Material Adverse Change"

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke came under fire this week for allegedly forcing Bank of America's acquisition of Merrill Lynch. Bank of America (BAC) had attempted to wrestle out of the deal, reportedly citing something called a material adverse change clause in the acquisition. House Republicans claim that Bernanke had threatened to replace Bank of America management, if they invoked the MAC clause. So, what is a material adverse change?

Material adverse change refers to a type of clause in a merger or acquisition that prescribes a list of negative possible outcomes. These "MAC clauses" help reduce the level of risk for a buyer (in an acquisition) or both parties (in a merger) by spelling out the negative events that could occur between the time a deal is signed and closed. MAC clauses serve as a jumping-off point for renegotiation should an unfortunate turn of events happen to an interested party before the deal is done.

Debate over Bank of America CEO Kenneth Lewis and his MAC move arose earlier this month. But while Merrill Lynch may have lost billions of dollars as this deal was ironed out, some experts remain dubious that Lewis could make a valid MAC claim.

Fed Documents Fuel Concerns About Expanding Central Bank's Role
Documents unearthed by congressional investigators reveal disagreements among senior Federal Reserve officials about how to handle Bank of America Corp.'s acquisition of Merrill Lynch, fueling concern on Capitol Hill over giving the central bank even more power to regulate the financial system.

The glimpse inside the regulatory machinery provided by emails, memorandums and handwritten notes show a Fed that wrestled with how tough it should be on Bank of America, one of the biggest U.S. banks. It also shows Fed officials questioning more broadly their response to the financial crisis months earlier. In December, Bank of America approached top U.S. officials about abandoning a deal, forged in the heat of the crisis, to buy investment bank Merrill Lynch.

In the end, the government arranged a $20 billion rescue package for the bank to cover growing losses at Merrill. In between, the documents show areas of disagreement within some of the Fed's 12 regional reserve banks. The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, where supervision of Bank of America's parent company is based, pushed for a tougher approach than other regulators, emails suggest. Bank of America officials appealed more than once to the Fed's Washington headquarters to intervene.

Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke was grilled in Congress today about his involvement in Bank of America’s acquisition of Merrill Lynch during stormy economic times last year. The Federal Open Market Committee yesterday voted to keep monetary policy unchanged and announced it will permit one of its emergency programs to expire – the first step to unwinding its massive provision of liquidity to shore up the economy and financial system.

One emergency program is expiring and two others are being reduced in magnitude in which cash or Treasuries are provided to financial institutions and money market funds under “unusual and exigent circumstances.”

The procedures mean the 10 large banks that have been cleared to repay Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds would need to submit "a determination of fair market value" to Treasury by the end of next week if they wish to repurchase the warrants.

Under a key TARP program, the government injected capital into hundreds of banks around the country in exchange for warrants to purchase common shares.

When a publicly-traded bank repays the government, the bank can repurchase the warrants. But that process is expected to be complicated given that the warrants have an unspecified value.

Banks will have 15 days after retiring government stakes to propose a “fair market value” for the securities, the Treasury said in a statement today in Washington. Should officials object to the estimate, up to three “independent appraisers” will help set a price. For lenders that don’t want to make an offer on the warrants, the Treasury will sell them at auctions.

I had been in Xanthi, the centerpiece city in the northeastern Greek region of Thrace, for only a few hours, admiring the neo-Classical-style buildings and restored tobacco warehouses of the old town. I spotted the minaret shortly after I heard a muezzin’s cry separating from the church bells and the cafes blasting Rihanna. I’d never seen a mosque open for prayer in Greece.

Almost all Greeks are Orthodox Christians, many of them fiercely attached to their cultural identity, and the church is as powerful as any political party. In Athens, where I had lived for four years, many Muslims are relative newcomers who must worship in rented basements until a mosque — approved by the Greek Parliament in 2006 — is built. In Thrace, Islam has long been part of the landscape.

But the area was not a familiar landscape to travelers until very recently. Just a couple of decades ago, Thrace was known mainly as an outpost for soldiers guarding Greece from a hostile Turkey and Communist Bulgaria. Today, thanks to much improved relations with both countries (especially Turkey), a spotlight is finally shining on northeastern Greece.

The leader of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church failed on Friday to make good on a promise of an announcement regarding the Ark of the Covenant.

The Italian news agency Adnkronos had reported that Patriarch Abuna Pauolos, who was in Rome this week to meet with Pope Benedict XVI, said that "Soon the world will be able to admire the Ark of the Covenant described in the Bible as the container of the tablets of the law that G-d delivered to Moses, and the center of searches and studies for centuries."

"The Ark of the Covenant has been in Ethiopia for many centuries,” he reportedly said. “As Patriarch, I have seen it with my own eyes, and only a few, highly-qualified persons could do the same -- until now."

The news agency said an announcement would be made at the Hotel Aldrovandi in Rome, where Pauolos was staying. However, a hotel spokeswoman told WorldNetDaily that although Pauolos had indeed been in residence there, no news conference or event was scheduled.

The original report quoted the patriarch as saying that the Ark of the Covenant "is in Ethiopia and nobody … knows for how much time. Only G-d knows. " He also said that the Ark "is described perfectly in the Bible" and added that "The state of conservation is good because it is not made from man's hand, but is something that G-d has made."

City Hall move would cost total of $12 million, Nagin's office says

Responding to demands from New Orleans City Council members for more information about the full cost of Mayor Ray Nagin's plan to move City Hall into Chevron Corp.'s former local headquarters, Nagin's office has put the project's total cost at $11.9 million, or nearly 50 percent more than the $8 million purchase price for the Chevron buildings.

Most of the extra costs, $3 million, are for renovations, including the sizable cost of creating a City Council chamber. Also budgeted are $450,000 in moving costs and $486,000 for "expenses associated with the purchase."

The bulk of the extra spending hinges on Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursements to the city for Hurricane Katrina damage to City Hall, including some that require special authorization not yet sought by city officials.
