It was not immediately clear if Mitchell wants his satellite office to be located at the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem or elsewhere in the city, but the officials said the envoy wants his in-country staff to work with American diplomats already based there. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Mitchell's request is not public.

Namibia Sez: We will sell Iran all the uranium we damn well please:

Namibia will not heed calls by individual countries on supplying uranium to Iran.

Prime Minister Nahas Angula says Namibia's position on uranium supply is guided by international agreements, which it has to honour, and is not shaped by calls from individual nations. A number of countries - including the United States, Britain, Germany and France - believe that Iran is running out of raw uranium, and have started with intensive diplomatic campaigns to dissuade major uranium producers, including Namibia, from selling to Iran. They accuse the Middle Eastern nation of trying to acquire nuclear weapons under the pretext of a civilian nuclear energy programme, which Iran has denied repeatedly. It maintains it only wants nuclear power to generate electricity.

Angula yesterday told The Namibian that "unless an international agreement, such as with the United Nations Security Council, calls for countries not to supply to Iran, the Namibian Government treats Iran as any other country".
Islamic MFers assassinate prominent Somali journalist
A prominent Somali journalist was shot and killed by suspected Islamist gunmen in broad daylight on Wednesday, as one of his colleagues watched in horror. Journalist Said Tahlil Ahmed was killed by gunmen in Somalia, according to a colleague who was with him.

"First, they shot him in the back and then one of the armed men came over him and fired more shots into his head to finish him off," he said. "One of the gunmen was shouting, 'Kill the other one,' which they meant another one of us."

The journalist did not want his name released for security reasons.
The OIC Propaganda Project
A (OIC) pilot ministerial committee will devise the programme in the languages best understood by the international community, so as to address the "incomplete picture" given of Islam and ensure that its "noble message" is heard. Senior officials created a special fund to which member states, institutions, and private individuals can contribute.

The Russia-Ukraine gas conflict and the geopolitical struggle for control of energy resources
Regardless of how events develop, the essential dependence of Europe on the supply provided by Russian energy systems will continue. This adds greater acuteness to the gas conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which is far from resolved. The readiness of today's ruling elites to make entire countries hostages of their drive for profit and geopolitical influence inevitably will provoke the outbreak of new conflicts. The main burden of these conflicts will fall on tens and hundreds of millions of ordinary people.
They got that right.

Russia looking to take part ownership of the world's largest Aluminum supplier
Russian mining billionaire Oleg Deripaska said the Russian government is considering taking some kind of minority stake in UC Rusal, the world's biggest aluminum company, as the firm tries to pare down its bloated debt.

[SNIP]

As the world's and Russia's economies tumbled last year, Rusal was forced to turn to the Kremlin for a $4.5 billion loan to refinance debt the company had taken on to buy a 25% stake in OAO Norilsk Nickel, one of Russia's biggest companies, in a move that was aimed at expanding Mr. Deripaska's business empire.

[SNIP]

Last month, President Dmitry Medvedev, other senior officials and metals tycoons including Mr. Deripaska, Vladimir Potanin, a key owner of Norilsk Nickel, and Alisher Usmanov of iron-ore giant OAO Metalloinvest met to discuss a plan to merge some of Russia's big metals companies.

All three of the businessmen owe billions of dollars to state-controlled banks.

Google Execs Face Trial In Italy
In what Google says is an attack on a free and open Internet, four of its executives went on trial Tuesday in Italy for defamation over a video shown on its site in that country. If convicted, the executives face a maximum penalty of three years in jail.

The case was brought against David Drummond, Google's senior vice president and chief legal officer; George Reyes, its former chief financial officer; and Peter Fleischer, Google's global privacy counsel; and a fourth defendant not yet identified, according to Reuters. The prosecutor, Francesco Cajani, ordered the defendants to appear in a Milan court today to face charges of defamation and failure to exercise control over personal data, stemming from an offensive video uploaded to Google's site in September 2006.

That cell phone video shows four male high school students in a school in the Italian city of Turin harassing a 17-year-old boy with Down syndrome. It was uploaded to Google Video in September 2006. It was among 200,000 videos uploaded to the site daily, according to Google.
