The Golem had a magnificent reception, and the collected volume published in 1915 sold 200,000 copies. Meyrink went on to write several more books, including The Green Face, Walpurgisnacht, the White Dominican and The Angel of the West Window. All have been published in English by Dedalus Books since the mid-1980s, and Mike Mitchell's excellent 1995 translations are definitely worth seeking out.
ReplyDeleteMeyrink was, of course, a contemporary of Kafka, and his novels have a lot in common with Prague's better-known fantasist. As Robert Irwin says in the introduction to the Dedalus edition of The Golem: "We have the Castle which is not Kafka's Castle, the Trial which is not Kafka's Trial, and a Prague which is not Kafka's Prague." HP Lovecraft was more succinct, calling The Golem "the most magnificent weird thing I've come across in aeons!"

ReplyDeleteJesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
ReplyDelete“The Spirit of YAHWEH is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the acceptable year of YAHWEH.”
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”[v]

CRUZ: RUINS HOPES OF RETAKING SENATE...
CAMBRIDGE, Md. — The House Republican leadership is trying to sell their colleagues on a series of broad immigration principles, including a path to legal status for those here illegally.
Speaker John Boehner’s leadership team introduced the principles at their annual "no women allowed" policy retreat here. Top Republicans circulated a tightly held one-page memo titled “standards for immigration reform” toward the tail-end of a day that include strategy conversations about Obamacare, the economy and the national debt.
“It’s important to act on immigration reform because we’re focused on jobs and economic growth, and this is about jobs and growth,” Boehner said in his pitch in the closed meeting. “Reform is also about our national security. The safety and security of our nation depends on our ability to secure our border, enforce our laws, improve channels for legal entry to the country, and identify who is here illegally.”

ReplyDeleteBlack Hawk Helicopters, Armed Agents Prepared For Super Bowl
Hidden snipers will be deployed in stadium...
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The pregame festivities at Super Bowl Boulevard in Times Square have been taking place under tight security, with an NYPD presence on literally every block. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents will be eyes in the sky come Sunday. They will be in Black Hawk helicopters, manning the door guns, enforcing the 10-mile no-fly zone around the stadium with deadly force.
And in a worst-case scenario, aviation agent Todd Sager is armed with heat seeking missiles aboard the helicopter to bring down an aircraft.
The enforcers do not expect trouble, but they are thoroughly prepared for it.

Sure Slick! Let's read from "Organising Chaos" O.K.? http://www.whale.to/b/bernays.pdf
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ...We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. ...In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons...who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.”

ReplyDeleteHow the GOP lost Middle America
ReplyDeleteCorporate America was going global and wanted to be rid of its American workforce, the best paid on earth, and replace it with cheap foreign labor.
While manufacturing sought to move production abroad, hotels, motels, bars, restaurants, farms and construction companies that could not move abroad also wanted to replace their expensive American workers.
Thanks to the Republican Party, Corporate America got it all.

Here is Knox' entire statement:
ReplyDeleteFirst and foremost it must be recognized that there is no consolation for the Kercher family. Their grief over Meredith's terrible murder will follow them forever. They deserve respect and support.
I am frightened and saddened by this unjust verdict. Having been found innocent before, I expected better from the Italian justice system. The evidence and accusatory theory do not justify a verdict of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Rather, nothing has changed. There has always been a marked lack of evidence. My family and I have suffered greatly from this wrongful persecution.
This has gotten out of hand. Most troubling is that it was entirely preventable. I beseech those with the knowledge and authority to address and remediate the problems that worked to pervert the course of justice and waste the valuable resources of the system: overzealous and intransigent prosecution, prejudiced and narrow-minded investigation, unwillingness to admit mistake, reliance on unreliable testimony and evidence, character assassination, inconsistent and unfounded accusatory theory, and counterproductive and coercive interrogation techniques that produce false confessions and inaccurate statements.
Clearly a wrongful conviction is horrific for the wrongfully accused, but it is also terribly bad for the victim, their surviving family, and society.

ReplyDeleteExtremely high-power sound waves can disrupt or destroy the eardrums and cause severe pain or disorientation. Less powerful sound waves can cause humans to experience nausea or discomfort. The use of these frequencies to incapacitate people has been used both in counter-terrorist and crowd-control settings. The possibility of a device that produces a frequency that causes vibration of the eyeballs - and therefore distortion of vision - has also been shown to work. High-amplitude sound of a specific pattern at a frequency close to the sensitivity peak of human hearing (2-3 kHz) is used as a burglar deterrent. Some police forces have used sound cannons against protesters, for example during the G20 summit in Pittsburgh. 'Acoustic grenades' generate between 120 decibels and 190 decibels.
German researchers showed that a blast of 210 decibels or more affects the inner organs and can cause internal injury that could lead to death. A blast impacts the body, and does so very violently.

ReplyDeleteIt seems that even wood isn’t green or renewable enough anymore. The EPA has recently banned the production and sale of 80 percent of America’s current wood-burning stoves, the oldest heating method known to mankind and mainstay of rural homes and many of our nation’s poorest residents. The agency’s stringent one-size-fits-all rules apply equally to heavily air-polluted cities and far cleaner plus typically colder off-grid wilderness areas such as large regions of Alaska and the American West.

ReplyDeletecant find a gp, single payer system and all
ReplyDeleteyup, can't have that
ReplyDeletethere is a reason for that. quite simple really A movie, someone else provides what their imagination composes, reading a book, our minds create the characters and our imagination fills in all of the cracks.
ReplyDeletewhat if tomorrow everyone woke up and simply refused to ask for permission,....for anything. Permission to burn wood in a fireplace, permission to ride motor cycles into coffee houses, permission to dance madly for no apparent reason at any given time, permission to sing loudly in the dairy aisle at the grocery, permission to piss in ones own back yard and wave at the neighbors while you did it? What if we just stopped asking permission?
ReplyDeleteI go wander off and try to get some sleep now. didn't sleep well at all last night.
