The sheer effort the FBI subsequently expended in attempting to decipher Louie Louie boggles the mind. The investigation went on for more than two years. The subsequent report on the song – unearthed in 1984 by video producer Eric Predoehl – runs for more than 140 pages. The records of the FBI's various attempts to work out the exact kind of obscenities that Louie Louie supposedly contained make for fantastic, demented reading. You can picture agents slowly going nuts as they desperately struggle to pin something, anything, dirty on the lyrics, regardless of whether or not that something makes any sense or actually features in the lyric. "Oh my bed and I lay her there, I meet a rose in her hair," suggested one interpretation. "We'll fuck your girl and by the way," offered another, failing to answer the fairly obvious question this provoked: what, exactly, is by the way? Some of the interpretations were quite lyrical – "Hey Señorita, I'm hot as hell" – although others were not: "Get that broad out of here!"One ad-hoc translator thought it was about masturbation: "Every night and day I play with my thing." Another particularly creative agent seemed to think it centered around the subject of performing cunnilingus on a woman who was menstruating – "She's got a rag on, I'll move above" – which, with the best will in the world, seems a spectacularly improbable topic for any rock band, no matter how raunchy, to be addressing in 1963. Another, more creative still, seems to have actually invented a perversion to fit the garbled vocals: "I felt my bone … ah … in her hair."

Three bombings hit high-profile areas around Cairo on Friday, including a suicide car bomber who struck the city's police headquarters, killing five people in the first major attack on the Egyptian capital as insurgents step up a campaign of violence following the ouster of the Islamist president.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the attacks, but they bore the hallmarks of Islamic extremists who have increasingly targeted police and the military since the July 3 coup against Mohammed Morsi and a fierce crackdown on his supporters led by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Washington’s Secret History with the Muslim Brotherhood

    http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2011/feb/05/washingtons-secret-history-muslim-brotherhood/

What is not well known is that the spread of the Muslim Brotherhood to the west was facilitated by the CIA during the Cold War Era as part of an anti-Soviet, anti-Communism initiative during the Eisenhower Administration. The creation of an Islamic Center in Munich, involved an ex-Nazi Turkologist, and former Nazi Muslim veterans from the Soviet Muslim satellites which were captured by advancing German forces during WWII in the Caucasus and Crimea. The CIA funded Hasan al Banna’s son-in-law to advance the MB cause via the World Muslim League. This resulted in an MB beachhead in the US launched from the Munich Islamic Center.

It’s not news that the major US media are run by and for big business, or that the major media companies are themselves big businesses. Twenty years ago, thirty corporations controlled 90 percent of US media. Today, it is a grand total of six mega-corporations—Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, Disney, Viacom, Time Warner, CBS, and Comcast. Besides accumulating their own profits, the media are daily trumpets for the rest of the corporate world’s advertising.

http://www.salon.com/2014/01/18/lets_nationalize_fox_news_imagining_a_very_different_media/ Let’s nationalize Fox News: Imagining a very different media

Upton Sinclair, in “The Brass Check,” defined journalism in the United States as “the day-to-day, between-elections propaganda, whereby the minds of the people are kept in a state of acquiescence, so that when the crisis of an election comes, they go to the polls and cast their ballots for either one of the two candidates of their exploiters.”

Sadly the writer of the article is delusional because he believes that a " socialist media " would be free of these problems...

My long-standing position is that marijuana should be decriminalized, if not made legal. Regulate and tax the tar out of it, please, but let’s stop pretending that pot consumers are nefarious denizens of the underworld. Among those who enjoy a recreational smoke are the folks selling you a house, golfing on the ninth hole and probably an editor or two here and there.

The “war on drugs” (beware government domestic wars) hasn’t made a dent in the popularity of pot. Nor, after decades of common use, has it been proved to be the evil weed of “Reefer Madness.” How much better to have dedicated our resources to education and treatment rather than, through prohibition, to empowering criminals and cartels, not to mention ruining young lives with “criminal” records.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/kathleen-parker-give-marijuana-smokers-a-little-leeway/2014/01/17/4f26b392-7fb7-11e3-93c1-0e888170b723_story.html

Marijuana isn’t necessarily harmless — abuse is abuse — but adults should be able to consume it without fear of legal repercussions, just as we consume alcohol. Even though today’s weed is much stronger than the stuff we used to smoke, its use is rarely as consequential as alcohol can be. Stoners might become overinvolved in the microscopic ecosystem of tree bark, but they’re unlikely to shoot up a bar over a pool game.

In Afghanistan, Karzai Makes Clear He Can't Stand The Americans

It's not possible to deal with him.

But don't be confused. Don't assume, or think for one minute, that Karzai's opposition to signing an agreement to insure American troops stay in Afghanistan means that they should stay. The Americans should get out. And what could happen? Such ready-made vague phrases as "failed state" or "sink into lawlessness" are vague phrases, describe the permanent condition of Afghanistan, and obscure the fact that a war in Afghanistan, of all against all, does not harm non-Muslim interests. It rather, helps to establish, in the minds of non-Muslims, the connection of violence with Islam, the hopeless mess of Islam. And that's good.

From US Helpers in Iraq to Sex Criminals in Colorado

Two Iraqi men in their 20s have been convicted of a bloody sex crime in Colorado that left the victim, a woman in her 50s, in need of immediate surgery and a colostomy bag. Three other Iraqi men, also in their 20s,were convicted on lesser charges as accessories.

His name is Jasim Ramadon, and he is the central character, known as “Steve-O,” in a war memoir published in 2009 by 1st Sgt. Daniel Hendrex. The book’s title is “A Soldier’s Promise: The Heroic True Story of an American Soldier and an Iraqi Boy.” Ramadon is that “Iraqi boy.” Forever young and smiling on the book’s cover and once a guest on “Oprah,” Ramadon, the Gazette reported, racked up a record of violent behavior in the U.S. He was convicted this week of multiple counts of sexual assault, and faces up to life in prison.

[Andrew Lang], famous for his work in folklore and for his translations of the Odyssey and the Iliad , surveyed the most recent and reliable ethnographic accounts of religion in the most primitive societies and concluded that many of these tribes believed in High Gods of the kinds associated with monotheism. The Making of Religion [Lang’s work] should have been a bolt from the blue. Not only was the author famous, but being a distinguished student of Tylor, he also had the appropriate credentials. Nevertheless, his conclusion doomed his book to obscurity for a generation: since a substantial number of the most primitive societies believe in one High God, monotheism cannot always be the end product of a linear evolutionary process. Indeed, Lang argued, it is equally probable that primitive forms of animism and ghost worship represent degeneration from earlier, purer forms of religion.

That we are living through a dark age. An age, if you like, of ‘endarkenment’ — and I don’t necessarily mean that negatively. The world is aflood with dark psychic fluid, everything’s stained with it. We all say we hate the stuff, but we don’t act that way, we splash in it. It’s an age in which, for reasons we can’t comprehend, everything’s being turned inside out, everything’s imploding and exploding at once, and we can’t stop it.

And it’s going to continue, it’ll go on for a long, long time, longer than we’re going to be alive. So we can’t find peace, we can’t ‘win,’ it’s not going to be all right. Not for us. But that doesn’t have to rob us of purpose; in fact it’s the opposite, it implies a great purpose: That what each of us must do is cleave to what we find most beautiful in the human heritage — and pass it on. So that one day, one day when this endarkenment exhausts itself, those precious things we’ve passed on will still be alive, stained perhaps but functional, still present in some form, and it will be possible for the people of that day to make use of them to construct a life that is a life — the life of freedom and variety and order and light and dark, in their proper proportions (whatever they may be). The life that we’d choose now if we could.

    — Michael Ventura, The Age of Endarkenment

Book Discussion on A Soldier's Promise

    Jul 20, 2006

    http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/ASoldie

Sergeant Hendrex talked about his book, A Soldier’s Promise: The Heroic True Story of an American Soldier and an Iraqi Boy, published by Simon Spotlight Entertainment. He described his relationship with Jamil, a young Iraqi boy, while serving with his Dragon Company unit in a small town in Iraq in 2003. The author met the
boy, now nicknamed Steve-O, when he approached the Dragon Company unit soldiers and asked to be arrested. Hendrex and other soldiers in the Dragon Company unit detailed how they worked together in Iraq to fight
the insurgency and the challenges they faced protecting Steve-O when they brought him back to the United States. They also responded to audience members' questions.

British Museum: Prototype for Noah's Ark was round

LONDON (AP) -- It was a vast boat that saved two of each animal and a handful of humans from a catastrophic flood.

But forget all those images of a long vessel with a pointy bow - the original Noah's Ark, new research suggests, was round.

A recently deciphered 4,000-year-old clay tablet from ancient Mesopotamia - modern-day Iraq - reveals striking new details about the roots of the Old Testament tale of Noah. It tells a similar story, complete with detailed instructions for building a giant round vessel known as a coracle - as well as the key instruction that animals should enter "two by two."

    http://www.aina.org/news/20140124134452.htm

The persecution of Christians throughout the Middle East, as well as the silence with which it has been met in the West, are the subject of journalist Ed West's Kindle Single "The Silence of Our Friends." The booklet is a brisk and chilling litany of horrors: Discriminatory laws, mass graves, unofficial pogroms, and exile. The persecuted are not just Coptic and Nestorian Christians who have relatively few co-communicants in the West, but Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants as well.

The happiness of unorganized imperfection is about as close to expressing the contrast between the American and the European way of life as any phrase can. It's also a foreign idea, not just to Bill de Blasio or Bloomberg, but to the larger political culture of urban progressives who are less interested in making the trains run on time, than in making the men and women run on time.

Statistically speaking, Americans should be more fearful of the local cops than “terrorists.”

Though Americans commonly believe law enforcement’s role in society is to protect them and ensure peace and stability within the community, the sad reality is that police departments are often more focused on enforcing laws, making arrests and issuing citations. As a result of this as well as an increase in militarized policing techniques, Americans are eight times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist, estimates a Washington’s Blog report based on official statistical data.

Though the U.S. government does not have a database collecting information about the total number of police involved shootings each year, it’s estimated that between 500 and 1,000 Americans are killed by police officers each year. Since 9/11, about 5,000 Americans have been killed by U.S. police officers, which is almost equivalent to the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in the line of duty in Iraq.

He was the only one who didn’t run. Now Darrin Manning may never father children after his encounter with a police officer earlier this month.

While on his way to a basketball game after school, the straight-A student and his teammates had an encounter with officer Thomas Purcell. Apparently one of the teammates may have said a snide remark to the officer, who then approached them. The boys ran, but Manning stopped and stayed. “I didn’t do anything wrong,” he said to Philly.com.

What happened next is hard to believe. Darrin was handcuffed, frisked, and his genitals were pulled and twisted with such force by the female officer that they literally tore off.

“I felt her reach, and she grabbed my butt. And then she grabbed and squeezed again and pulled down. And that’s when I heard something pop, like I felt it POP,” Manning said.

Manning is being charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and resisting arrest. The charges have outraged Manning’s mother, Ikea Coney. “He’s not a bad child. He’s not in the streets.” Manning’s principal, Veronica Joyner, said Manning is a model student with no history of wrongdoing. “I believe he was sexually assaulted,” she said.

  194. SAN JOSE -- Police would be able to tap into private video camera recordings from San Jose residents who agree to provide access to authorities under a new proposal that would expand investigators' watchful eye over the city but already is raising big brother-type privacy concerns.

Councilman Sam Liccardo's proposal, unveiled Thursday and set to be discussed by a City Council committee next week, would allow property owners voluntarily to register their security cameras for a new San Jose Police Department database. Officers then would be able to access the footage quickly after a nearby crime has occurred.
