Horses

Then another horse came out,
a fiery red one.
 Its rider was given power
to take peace from the earth
and to make people kill each other.
To him was given a large sword.

Moses Farrow, now 36, and an accomplished photographer, has been estranged from Mia for several years. During a recent conversation, he spoke of “finally seeing the reality” of Frog Hollow and used the term “brainwashing” without hesitation. He recently reestablished contact with Allen and is currently enjoying a renewed relationship with him and Soon-Yi.

The pineal gland (also called the pineal body, epiphysis cerebri, epiphysis or the “third eye”) is a small endocrine gland in the vertebrate brain. It produces the serotonin derivative melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns and seasonal functions. Its shape resembles a tiny pine cone (hence its name), and it is located near the center of the brain, between the two hemispheres, tucked in a groove where the two rounded thalamic bodies join.

Personally I define intelligence as the ability to
understand and integrate new information (of any kind) into your brain,
filter it through the rest of what you know, and discard it or adjust
your thinking accordingly where it is applicable

the ability to adapt your thinking based on what you learn

most people can only memorize and repeat

they are not really learning anything

it took me a long time to realize that because some people are very very good at it

    yet it is just recitation

  40. The game was played in the magnificently ugly and instantly carcinogenic New Jersey town of East Rutherford, about ten miles as the terrorist crow flies from where the World Trade Center was blown to dust on 9/11/2001. Security precautions involved such insane measures as Black Hawk helicopters and “hidden snipers.” There was even a series of “suspicious powder” scares near the stadium days before the game. But although it would have made the festivities far more exciting, there were no terrorist attacks. There were merely snipers and choppers and pat-downs and vehicle scans and bomb-sniffing dogs and 4,000 security agents and an elaborate constellation of intelligence-sharing and surveillance. Living in an authoritarian prison is the price we pay for freedom.

On January 17, soon after McFaul was appointed the new United States Ambassador to Russia and arrived in Moscow to assume his post, a number of organizers and prominent participants of the 2011 Russian protests, as well as some prominent figures of the Russian opposition parties, visited the Embassy of the United States in Moscow. On the entrance to the embassy they were encountered by TV journalists who asked them why they were visiting the new Ambassador.[8] On the video later released on YouTube[9] and titled "Получение инструкций в посольстве США" (Receiving instructions in the Embassy of the United States) opposition activists appear flustered by the unexpected media attention. Later, when upon leaving the embassy and once again being encircled by journalists, the activists responded by declaring the journalists spreaders of "Surkovian propaganda" and made no other statement.[8] The visitors to Michael McFaul included: Yevgeniya Chirikova (member of Strategy-31 and Khimki forest activist leader), Boris Nemtsov (leader of the People's Freedom Party), Lev Ponomarev (human rights activist of the Moscow Helsinki Group), Sergey Mitrokhin (leader of Yabloko party), Oksana Dmitriyeva (deputy head of A Just Russia), Lilia Shibanova (head of the GOLOS Association elections monitor group).[8] Two weeks later, journalist Olga Romanova who managed the financial spending of the December protests, also visited the American Embassy. She said that they discussed Russian protests and the United States Presidential election campaign with McFaul.[10]

Reaction to the incident was mixed: President Dmitry Medvedev in his public comments at Moscow State University largely exonerated McFaul by saying that meeting with opposition figures was a routine occurrence, although he warned the new U.S. ambassador to Moscow that he is on Russian soil and should respect Russian political sensibilities.[11] The incident sparked a highly negative reaction in the Russian media[which?] and blogs[which?].[8][11] but an article in the Daily Beast wrote that McFaul's stance won plaudits from pro-democracy activists and Web-savvy Russian youth and that, "in the tight-knit world of Moscow’s opposition, McFaul has become something of an Internet celebrity, making him a true 21st-century diplomat."[12]

End the Ban on Psychoactive Drug Research
It's time to let scientists study whether LSD, marijuana and ecstasy can ease psychiatric disorders
    http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/end-the-ban-on-psychoactive-drug-research/?&WT.mc_id=SA_SP_20140203
LSD, ecstasy (MDMA), psilocybin and marijuana have, for decades, been designated as drugs of abuse. But they had their origins in the medical pharmacopeia. Through the mid-1960s, more than 1,000 scientific publications chronicled the ways that LSD could be used as an aid to make psychotherapy more effective. Similarly, MDMA began to be used as a complement to talk therapy in the 1970s. Marijuana has logged thousands of years as a medicament for diseases and conditions ranging from malaria to rheumatism.

    Ending the War on Ferrets

    http://reason.com/reasontv/2013/04/02/ending-the-war-on-ferrets

Slinky, curious, and intelligent - ferrets have been domesticated for centuries. But in D.C., New York City, Hawaii, and California ferret owners face threats of jail time and fines up to $10,000.

Ferret opponents fret that the 20-inch mammals are likely to launch "vicious unprovoked attacks on humans," despite a study from California's own Research Bureau which found that ferrets don't "pose an unusual risk of bites." Others worry that escaped pet ferrets could form feral bands in the wild, but the same study found it "improbable that domestic ferrets could establish feral colonies in California."

In 2004, the popular pet was nearly legalized in California, but the bill was stopped dead by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto. Ferret legalization groups remain undeterred. As David Gaines of the American Ferret Association explains, "it takes people and the grassroots knocking on the door of the legislature saying 'stop laughing, this issue is important to me and I'm your constituent.'"

The Transportation Department plans to mandate new technology in every vehicle that “constantly broadcasts via radio wave a car’s location, direction, speed and, possibly, even the number of passengers it is carrying.” The agency says the safety benefits will outweigh the technology’s cost. But cost probably isn’t what most people find troublesome about this.

An ultra-Orthodox Jewish man who was convicted of offering to spy for Iran was sentenced to a four-and-a-half-year prison term by the Jerusalem District Court on Tuesday.

Yitzhak Bergel, a 46-year-old a member of the anti-Zionist fringe group Neturei Karta, met with Iranian officials at their embassy in Berlin in 2011.

Bergel attempted to enter the embassy on January 17, but found it to be closed. Returning the following day, he was shepherded into an inner room at the embassy and there met with three unidentified men.

He told the Iranian officials that he denies the existence of the State of Israel and offered to spy for Iran. He also explained to the officials that he was not interested in asylum, and was ‘willing to murder a Zionist.’

The Iranian officials gave Bergel a note with an email address where they said he would find a message. They also asked him to maintain telephone contact with them.

Three days after the meeting, Bergel returned to Israel and began to check the email account repeatedly, and even attempted to contact someone named ‘Haji Baba’ by phone.

Bergel was arrested in mid-July. As part of a plea bargain, he confessed to charges of treason and contacting a foreign agent.

Under civil asset forfeiture, police can seize property suspected of involvement in criminal activity. Unlike criminal asset forfeiture, with civil forfeiture, people don't have to be convicted—or even charged—with a crime to permanently lose their cars, homes, or cash.

Even worse, in many cases, police get to keep what they seize through asset forfeiture. As long as cops get to keep what they seize, civil asset forfeiture will keep on spawning scandals.

Long Invisible, Research Shows Volcanic CO2 Levels Are Staggering (Op-Ed)

    http://www.livescience.com/40451-volcanic-co2-levels-are-staggering.html

You'd think that would be enough. That might be my fault — I tend to save the weird stuff until the end. Recently, an enigmatic source of volcanic carbon has come to light that isn't involved with lava — or even craters. It now seems that not only is there CO2 we can't get to, there's some we can't even see.

Carbon dioxide is always invisible, but its presence can be inferred in volcanic plumes — betrayed by the billowing clouds of water vapour released alongside it. Without the water, though, it's a different story. The new poster-child of planetary degassing is diffuse CO2 — invisible emanations which can occur across vast areas surrounding the main vents of a volcano, rising through the bulk of the mountains. This transparent haze is only just beginning to receive proper attention, and as such we have very little idea of how much it might contribute to the global output.

Even more incredibly, it even seems that some volcanoes which are considered inactive, in terms of their potential to ooze new land, can still make some serious additions to the atmosphere through diffuse CO2 release. Residual magma beneath dormant craters, though it might never reach the surface, can still 'erupt' gases from a distance. Amazingly, from what little scientists have measured, it looks like this process might give off as much as half the CO2 put out by fully active volcanoes.

British toilets have some sort of weird flushing mechanism that you have to hit like killing a rat, fast! or it won't freaking flush. Had to call the whateverheis to a hotel room in Bath to show us how to do it. He thought it was pretty funny. But we don't hit them like that. It could break!

    An Exemplary Retirement System

    From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

A Milwaukee police detective charged with lying to an FBI agent has applied for duty disability retirement, saying the stress of being investigated, arrested and strip-searched has left him unable to be a police officer, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has learned….

If his application is approved, Huerta could be paid by the city for the rest of his life. In most cases, duty disability provides such retirees with 75% of their salaries, tax-free. His 2012 salary, including overtime, was more than $85,000….

Officer Dwight Copeland didn’t show up for work for the equivalent of half of his 14 years on the force and was disciplined two dozen times for misconduct. Copeland was fired for lying about an application claiming he was disabled because of a shoulder injury and stress. His duty disability retirement was able to be approved last year because he filed it before he was fired.

The actor and director Joel Grey (Cabaret) has for years spent his free hours prowling city streets looking for billboards and signs that have begun to decay and show what’s underneath. The layered, weathered images, collage-like and surreal, become strange works of art themselves once they’re framed by Grey’s smart-phone camera. If this seems like a stunt, be assured it’s not. Yes, anyone can do this, but not everyone has Grey’s keen eye for composition, color, and the genuinely spooky textures in these tributes to the beauties of decay.

These images are taken from The Billboard Papers: Photographs by Joel Grey (Pointed Leaf Press).

Finally some rational legislation is passed concerning ‘public servants’ unlawfully entering another person’s property.

All too often, we see examples of cops breaking into the wrong house and shooting the family dog, or worse, killing a member of the family.

Well, Indiana has taken action to “recognize the unique character of a citizen’s home and to ensure that a citizen feels secure in his or her own home against unlawful intrusion by another individual or a public servant.”

OH CRAP know we've done it

Could studying the universe DESTROY it? Changing our perception of the cosmos could end it if quantum theories are correct

This is based on strange way quantum states are affected when observed

In Schrödinger's cat experiment, a cat in a box, whose fate is decided by subatomic particles, is both alive and dead until someone looks at it

According to two U.S. scientists, the same thing could happen to the universe, causing an irreversible shift in the universe's energy

Some scientists think universe is overdue for a quantum energy change

If shift occurs, it won't exceed the speed of light, so we’ll see it coming

    By Ellie Zolfagharifard
