RIP Phil Everly

Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy, issued a tribute statement late Friday. "Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Phil Everly was part of one of the most prominent vocal duos of the rock era. Joined by his brother Don in the Everly Brothers, the duo’s superb and flawless harmonies influenced some of music’s most iconic acts, including the Beach Boys and the Beatles. Their profound impact on pop and rock music is still heard today, and will continue to live on in future generations. Phil Everly was a groundbreaking artist, and he leaves an indelible and timeless mark on music and our industry. Our sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends and those who were inspired by his outstanding talent."
Paul Simon:

The Everly Brothers' impact exceeds even their fame. They were a big influence on John Lennon and Paul McCartney — who called themselves the Foreverly Brothers early on — and, of course, on Simon and Garfunkel. When we were kids, Artie and I got our rock & roll chops from the Everlys. Later, as Simon and Garfunkel, we put "Bye Bye Love" on Bridge Over Troubled Water, and much later, Phil and Don both sang on the song "Graceland."

Those who were musicians,
heads of Levite families,
stayed in the rooms of the temple
and were exempt from other duties
 because they were responsible
for the work day and night.

Glad I got to see them on this tour. The Everlys looked and sounded better than S & G. Paul Simon:

Before the Everly Brothers joined Artie and me on the road in 2003, Phil and Don had actually quietly retired three years earlier. They basically came out of retirement for us. I said, "Phil, look, if you're going to retire, you might as well come out one more time and take a bow and let me at least say what it is that you meant to us and to the culture."

You know, the Everlys have a long history of knocking each other down, as brothers can do. So in a certain sense, it was hilarious that the four of us were doing this tour, given our collective histories of squabbling. And it's amazing, because they hadn't seen each other in about three years. They met in the parking lot before the first gig. They unpacked their guitars — those famous black guitars — and they opened their mouths and started to sing. And after all those years, it was still that sound I fell in love with as a kid. It was still perfect.

'Navy SEAL who fired the bin Laden kill shot and took down Pablo Escobar' found out to be a FRAUD after 'securing a half-billion dollar security contract'

A.J. Dicken made massive claims about his completely fictitious military background, saying he was a Navy SEAL and ex-CIA was actually a Nevada-based bartender with a criminal record

They spoke of people running with no belongings into the wild – trying to flee the blood lust of the militiamen. The children unable to escape were forced to line up while these barbaric ‘soldiers’ mutilated them one by one. The
militiamen hacked off a hand or an arm, or sliced open their foreheads. They came into this centre on stretchers, but they did not cry. They were too traumatised. I looked into some of their eyes and there was nothing behind them.

For ten deadly months, the Central African Republic has been ravaged by atrocities between Muslim Séléka rebels, who seized power last March, and Christian militias. Thousands have been killed and almost a million – a fifth of the population – driven from their homes. As the UN warns of impending genocide, The Mail on Sunday reports on a humanitarian crisis where tiny children are being targeted by vigilante mobs.

Via the New York Times Lens Blog:
When mostly Christian militias loyal to the ousted president launched an attack on the Central African Republic’s capital, Bangui, on the morning of Dec. 5, the Associated Press photographer Jerome Delay was in his hotel. Cut off from his driver because of the fighting, Mr. Delay walked and caught rides from pro-government forces instead.
Corpses were laid in front of Parliament, on the streets and inside a mosque where about 50 bodies of women and men were being prepared for burial. He found 200 more when he went to the morgue the next day.
"It was horrifying. I’m an old hand in a way, and so as terrible as it sounds, I’m used to the smell of death,” said Mr. Delay, who is 53. "But that was unbearable. Absolutely unbearable."
FJP: Don’t know much about the Central African Republic? Here’s the Guardian’s current reporting on the sectarian fighting happening in the country. Here’s the same from The New York Times. And here’s a timeline of the country’s history from the BBC.
Over at the United Nations, Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson has told the Security Council that the country’s “population is enduring suffering beyond imagination.”

Central African Republic: Sectarian violence taking it’s toll
France’s U.N. ambassador called the situation in Central African Republic “horrendous.” Other human rights observers, diplomats and government officials use similar terms to describe the African country, where armed Seleka rebels from neighboring countries have engineered a near-civil war between the country’s dominant Christian population and minority Muslims. “The state has collapsed, and this country is now simply plundered, looted, the women are raped, people are killed by thugs,” French U.N. Ambassador Gerard Araud said earlier this month. U.S. State Department officials have used similar language. France and Rwanda, which has had its own history of genocide, are trying to organize intervention, but the situation is considered so volatile no one is sure how to make a definitive move.
More than 400,000 people have been displaced, and reports of child murders and grotesque violence are prompting fears that genocide may be inevitable. VII photographer Marcus Bleasdale recently documented the effect of the sectarian violence in the Central African Republic for Human Rights Watch.

Between 400 and 500 Roma live in squalor at Ponorata, few have access to electricity and 95% of them are illiterate and unemployed. Many Roma from Ponorata have spent time in France to earn money, mostly through begging and scrap metal collection.

East Harlem councilwoman and Bill de Blasio ally Melissa Mark-Viverito, who will likely be voted City Council Speaker next week, has a very weird lawsuit on her hands: Gwen Goodwin, who ran an unsuccessful primary campaign against Mark-Viverito back in September, claims that her former rival cursed her by having a mural of a colorful, decapitated rooster head installed on her building.

The painting, which was placed on Goodwin's 100th Street home about two weeks before voting day, is part of Los Muros Hablan, a public art campaign headed by Mark-Viverito. The project's stated goal was to celebrate Latino culture but, according to Goodwin's Friday filing in Manhattan Supreme Court, Mark-Viverito's intentions were far more sinister: "According to neighbors of Puerto Rican and other backgrounds, in the Caribbean culture, [the rooster] constituted a curse and a death threat, as a swastika or a noose would symbolize typically to many Jews or African-Americans."

"This intimated me and caused me fear. I’m a Christian. I don’t believe outside my religion, but strange things were happening," she added, citing a blood clot in her foot and a friend who started "acting crazy."

Those harmonies and their songs would influence many acts that would marry country with rock in the 1970s, most notably, the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Eagles. The Beatles, the Beach Boys, Vince Gill and Paul Simon were big fans as were Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe, who covered the Everlys during their late '70s tenure in Rockpile. Linda Ronstadt famously covered their hit “When Will I Be Loved.”

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones partnered on a release late last year of Everly Brothers songs as did Dawn McCarthy and Bonnie Prince Billy. Both albums brought twang, tension and a bit of old-fashioned song craft to a new generation of listeners who are more likely to be introduced to the Everly Brothers sound through the Milk Carton Kids than the originals.

Some may have forgotten, or not be aware, that the Federal Reserve system has its own police force. Well, it does: "The U.S. Federal Reserve Police is the law enforcement arm of the Federal Reserve System, the central banking system of the United States.... Officers are certified to carry a variety of weapons systems (depending on assignment) including semi-automatic pistols, assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, less-lethal weapons, pepper spray, batons and other standard police equipment. Officers also wear bullet resistant vests/body armor. On October 12, 2010 President Barack Obama signed into law S.B. 1132 the "Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act Improvements Act", which states that law enforcement officers of the Federal Reserve are "qualified law enforcement officers" and thus are authorized to carry a firearm off-duty."

At last check, there were over 1000 sworn members of the Fed police force. And judging by the recent spike in appearances of such "help wanted" ads as those shown below, that number is too low. We expect many more job postings such as these to appear in the coming weeks and months: in fact, we are willing to predict that the closer we get to a "renormalization" of the Fed's balance sheet, the faster the hiring of Fed cops...

Sometime in the mid-1960s, a junk dealer in Houston, Texas acquired 12 large notebooks that had been thrown out to the curb after a house fire. Filled with mysterious, double-sided, collaged watercolor drawings, the journals were eventually discovered at the junk shop in 1969 by art history student Mary Jane Victor. Victor attended the University of St. Thomas in Houston, where she worked with art patron Dominique de Menil. After telling Menil about the books, Menil purchased four of the notebooks for the (then) hefty sum of $1,500, and included them immediately in an exhibition at Rice University in Houston. Pete Navarro, a local graphic artist and mystery enthusiast, upon seeing the exhibition — eventually acquired the remaining books, studying them obsessively for more than 15 years. Navarro eventually sold the remaining books to museums and galleries.

    John Foster
    Accidental Mysteries, 08.05.12

In 2007, the discovery of an unknown street photographer by the name of Vivian Maier (1926-2009) rocked the world of art photography. While infirm and near death, the former nanny/photographer was unable to make the payments on a storage locker, and the contents sold at auction. Consequently, there were three key people who ended up with the lion’s share of the work — all of whom recognized the quality of the work right away. Most talked about are John Maloof and Jeffrey Goldstein, but the third and less recognized is Chicago collector Ron Slattery. It was Ron who first brought attention of Miss Maier to the public eye with this July 2008 post on his website, Big Happy Funhouse. The images here are all from the Ron Slattery Collection, who owns thousands of vintage prints and negatives. The Chicago gallery Corbett vs. Dempsey recently ended an exhibition of vintage Vivian Maier prints from the Slattery Collection, most of which are shown for you today on Accidental Mysteries. Maier’s work is highly sought after by private collectors and major museums.

Texas Court Throws 2nd, 4th Amendments Under The Bus

Texas courts have ruled that because legally owned firearms represent “a threat of physical violence” to police, officers may ignore the 4th Amendment rights of Texas residents by treating ALL legally issued warrants as “No Knock” warrants, even if the issuing judge has made it clear that officers “…must knock on the door and announce their identity and purpose before attempting a forcible entry.”

In August of 2006, police in Collin County, Texas obtained a warrant to search the home of John Quinn, based on information that Quinn’s son might be keeping a controlled substance on the premises. Although the warrant “…did not authorize police to enter the residence without knocking and announcing their entry,” the County SWAT Team broke through Quinn’s door unannounced, “…based solely on the suspicion that there were firearms in the Quinn household.” Not aware of who had broken into his home, the suddenly awakened Quinn was shot by officers as he grabbed a nearby gun for the purpose of defending his life, family, and property. All firearms in the home were legally owned by Quinn. Police discovered less than 1 gm of cocaine on the premises.

Law enforcement has been given the “legal” authority to view Texas gun owners as potential criminals and to treat them accordingly. Every armed Texan is therefore presumed guilty until proven innocent. Does this mean police may legally gun down the holder of a Concealed Carry license on site, based on the belief that being armed makes such a person likely to kill an officer?

Why are U.S. conservatives so obsessed with monarchies?

    http://theweek.com/article/index/254690/why-are-us-conservatives-so-obsessed-with-monarchies
And what happened to the right's reverence for the Founding Fathers and America's constitution?

Joining the Auslins and Buchanans of the world is a new group of techno-libertarians and monarchists who have been making waves online for a couple of years now. The movement seems to have officially kicked off when, in 2009, Peter Thiel, the co-founder of PayPal, declared, "I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible."

This is complex, and opinions vary, so I'll try my best to summarize those who espouse this view without misrepresenting them. Though sometimes referred to as monarchists, "neoreactionary" seems to be the preferred watchword. That's not to say that some in this camp don't really advocate monarchy, but "monarchy-fetishism" might be more appropriate.

This infographic – courtesy of Online Paralegal Programs — contains sage advice for how to handle the police.

The most important thing? Never, under any circumstances, for any reason whatsoever, answer a question that a police officer asks you. The reasons for this are best explained in a lecture given by Regent University law professor James Duane. According to Duane, answering questions can never help you. Even if you are innocent, your statements can lead to false self-incrimination; anything you might say that would actually help your side can simply be discarded by the authorities.

This belief system posits that Allah’s kingdom will be established on earth by the Twelfth or Hidden Imam, also known as the Mahdi, whose advent can be hastened by creating the right set of circumstances: friction and misunderstanding among the nations and violent upheavals in a welter of blood and fire.

Incredulous westerners who would pass this off as merely a quaint belief to be taken with a grain of salt, or indeed with a whole salt shaker, should reconsider. Sivan spends many pages describing and analyzing the Shi’ite vision of an “ideal, legitimate state to be instituted by its leader, the Hidden Imam.”

Two North Carolina parents are in shock after local police shot and killed their 18-year-old son in their own home, while they watched helplessly.

The family called police because they were worried about their son, Keith Vidal, who is schizophrenic and suffers from depression, according to local news. Vidal, armed with a small screwdriver, was apparently having a psychotic episode. Mark Wilsey, Vidal’s father, called the authorities to help deal with the situation.

An officer from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and another from the Boiling Spring Lakes police department showed up to the house soon after. Eventually, a third officer from the Southport police department entered the home as well, and ordered the use of tasers to subdue Vidal. According to Wilsey, Vidal was pinned on the ground by two of the officers when a third said, “we don’t have time for this,” and shot Vidal, killing him.

Vidal had just turned 18, and weighed a mere 90 pounds. He couldn’t have hurt anyone with the screwdriver, and had no history of violence according to family and friends.

“There was no reason to shoot this kid,” said Wilsey in a statement. “They killed my son in cold blood. We called for help and they killed my son.
