Turkish anti-terrorism police carried out raids in six cities on Tuesday, detaining at least five people with alleged links to al-Qaeda, including an employee of a prominent Islamic charity group that provides aid to Syria, media reports and officials said.

At least three people were detained in simultaneous police raids in Istanbul while a fourth person was detained in the central Turkish city of Kayseri, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Telephone companies are quietly balking at the idea of changing how they collect and store Americans' phone records to help the National Security Agency's surveillance programs. They're worried about their exposure to lawsuits and the price tag if the U.S. government asks them to hold information about customers for longer than they already do.

The president's hand-picked review committee has recommended ending the phone records program as it exists. It suggested shifting the storage of the phone records from the NSA to phone companies or an unspecified third party, and it recommended new legal requirements before the government could search anyone's phone records.

The phone companies don't want the job. Executives and their lawyers have complained about the plan in confidential meetings with administration officials and key congressional intelligence and other committees, according to interviews by The Associated Press. Two phone executives familiar with the discussions said the cellular industry told the government that it prefers the NSA keep control over the surveillance program and would only accept changes if they were legally required. The executives spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the private discussions. But there have been public complaints, too.

    America: A Growing Servility
    http://www.chroniclesmagazine.org/2014/01/13/america-a-growing-servility/

Question: Admittedly, US foreign policy in recent decades has been disastrous, and the economy, taken as a whole, is in decline. But surely, there is more to the United States than wealth and power. It is a vast continental empire of more than 300 million people, living in historically distinct regions and states. What sort of vibrancy survives in, for example, the cultures of New England or the South? Answer: Not a great deal, I am afraid. The growth in the power of the central government—particularly the executive and judicial branches—has reduced the once sovereign states to the level of administrative districts, bound by law to do the bidding of their masters in Washington, D.C. The two national parties seek only to satisfy the interests that put them into office, which means, in effect, that a majority of American taxpaying citizens have been disenfranchised, and power is nominally transferred to a welfare-dependent underclass, whereas in reality it is the politicians and bureaucrats, working in tandem with the greatest business interests, who monopolize actual power. Even rather rich people are powerless. I know a banker, worth over $100 million dollars, who complained to me that "little guys" like him could not practically influence politicians or even fix a parking ticket. - See more at: http://www.chroniclesmagazine.org/2014/01/13/america-a-growing-servility/#sthash.dpBJXCeH.dpuf

Few warlords are more unpitying than Joseph Kony of the Lord's Resistance Army, as the wider world discovered through the film Kony 2012. Now some of the survivors are taking the opportunity to record their horrifying experiences. Will Storr travels to Uganda to listen
    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jan/12/joseph-kony-uganda-massacres-survivors-stories
Like many other survivors here, he dug a mass grave for his family after the Lord's Resistance Army came through Amoko on 7 December 1991. You won't read about the Amoko massacre in any newspaper or book. In fact, today's arrival of a young social scientist named Deo Komakech, with his notebook and video-recorder, marks the first time that the people who lived through the attack by Joseph Kony's dreaded men have been asked about it. "There's no one to listen to our story," Nekolina Lakot tells him. "It's good you have come."

Gathering these stories, quietening these ghosts, is the unusual work of the organisation which employs Deo, the National Memory and Peace Documentation Centre (NMPDC). Based in Kitgum, and supported by the UK charity Christian Aid, their mission is to harvest information concerning the 19 years in which the LRA preyed upon the people of this region, which is known as Acholiland.

It was the Acholi who suffered the worst of the war's atrocities. Because they wouldn't join the LRA's anti-government forces, its leader Kony – an Acholi himself – accused them of treachery. As a result of the vengeance the LRA inflicted upon them, Acholiland is as haunted a place as any in the world. Along the district's main road are burnt-out, AK-47-strafed churches and abandoned homes scrawled with child's drawings of bullet-spraying men. In the area around Kitgum alone, it's believed there are more than 100 unmarked mass graves. Among the people here, it's not unusual to see survivors bearing the LRA's characteristic butcher marks: missing noses, lips, ears, buttocks and hands

    ReplyDelete
  70. BabbaZee2:01 PM

Ideologically, LRA believe in African mysticism and Christian fundamentalism. It claims to be establishing a theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments and local Acholi tradition.
The group is led by Joseph Kony, who proclaims himself the spokesman of God and a spirit medium.

Have you ever heard of Lord's Resistance Army, Dawn? How about you, Brian? Snerdley, have you? You never heard of Lord's Resistance Army? Well, proves my contention, most Americans have never heard of it, and here we are at war with them. Lord's Resistance Army are Christians. It means God. I was only kidding. Lord's Resistance Army are Christians. They are fighting the Muslims in Sudan. And Obama has sent troops, United States troops to remove them from the battlefield, which means kill them. That's what the lingo means, "to help regional forces remove from the battlefield," meaning capture or kill.

    ReplyDelete
  74. BabbaZee2:03 PM

    !!!!!

    oh my GOD
Lord's Resistance Army objectives. I have them here. "To remove dictatorship and stop the oppression of our people." Now, again Lord's Resistance Army is who Obama sent troops to help nations wipe out. The objectives of the Lord's Resistance Army, what they're trying to accomplish with their military action in these countries is the following: "To remove dictatorship and stop the oppression of our people; to fight for the immediate restoration of the competitive multiparty democracy in Uganda; to see an end to gross violation of human rights and dignity of Ugandans; to ensure the restoration of peace and security in Uganda, to ensure unity, sovereignty, and economic prosperity beneficial to all Ugandans, and to bring to an end the repressive policy of deliberate marginalization of groups of people who may not agree with the LRA ideology." Those are the objectives of the group that we are fighting, or who are being fought and we are joining in the effort to remove them from the battlefield.

The government of Uganda claims that Lord's Resistance Army only has 500 or a thousand soldiers in total. So what's the threat? If that's the maximum size of their army, what's the threat? A thousand soldiers? Now, 1100 soldiers because we have sent a hundred. I'm not making this up. This is Jacob Tapper. ABC News had reported that Obama got a letter off to John Boehner a couple days ago announcing this. It's just for a few months until the Lord's Resistance Army is eradicated. That's all. Just a few months. Not much of a threat.

"In rebuking Judah, Jeremiah said they had committed two great sins. They had forsaken the well of living water and then dug wells that could hold no water. The church is doing the same. We are walking away from the clear teaching of Jesus and creating a system that is much more politically ideological than it is Christlike. The union of religion and politics is already turning its back to the Gospel for the sake of power and influence. I think this is the greatest danger we face today. We listen to our favorite news channel, read papers and articles that seem to verify our political leanings, rejoice when our perceived enemies fail and hold on to the crazy idea that a country can be Christian. It is a monumental distraction and Jesus had nothing to do with it. His Kingdom is wholly different. "It is not of this world," he told Pilate. But we don't want to believe that. The demons we need to identify and cast out are those in our own thinking; those that tell is that Jesus wasn't all that serious about what He said. Those that convince us that the Kingdom of God can be promoted by political activism. And most importantly, those that make us feel righteous simply because the other guys are worse than we are. "

  119. WASHINGTON — The National Security Agency has implanted software in nearly 100,000 computers around the world that allows the United States to conduct surveillance on those machines and can also create a digital highway for launching cyberattacks.

While most of the software is inserted by gaining access to computer networks, the N.S.A. has increasingly made use of a secret technology that enables it to enter and alter data in computers even if they are not connected to the Internet, according to N.S.A. documents, computer experts and American officials.

The technology, which the agency has used since at least 2008, relies on a covert channel of radio waves that can be transmitted from tiny circuit boards and USB cards inserted surreptitiously into the computers. In some cases, they are sent to a briefcase-size relay station that intelligence agencies can set up miles away from the target.

Court ruling overturns Net Neutrality, threatens online access, experts warn

Thanks for watching that YouTube video! That will be 50 cents, please.

Sound unrealistic? It's actually a distinct possibility, after a Federal appeals court on Tuesday struck down an FCC ruling meant to prevent an Internet service provider -- the company you pay for online access -- from prioritizing some website traffic over others.

Don't pay and you can't watch. Period.

Arizona Imposes Net Metering Fee on Rooftop Solar

The state's utility regulator, the Arizona Corporation Commission, concluded that concerns about the cost shift are real and imposed a fee of 70 cents per kilowatt of installed solar, which would equate to about $5 per month in a typical household. Though that is but a tenth of what the power industry had advocated, spending millions of dollars to lobby the Arizona regulators and influence public opinion, it may have some national impact.

Qualcomm is jumping further into the smart grid space. Although they have been dabbling in offerings to utilities, including partnering with Verizon to offer connected grid infrastructure, the fact that the chipset giant is sticking with cellular even as mesh abounds is a validation of SmartSynch’s approach.

Retired police captain held in Florida shooting; texting sparked spat

"Chad Oulson began noisily texting his daughter and Reeves asked him several times to stop, Charles Cummings, who was siting nearby, told reporters at a televised news conference Monday. Voices began to rise in anger."

It was supposed to be a rare afternoon off for a Florida couple who put their young daughter in day care and went to see the matinee of the recently released military flick, “Lone Survivor.”

Instead of violence staying safely on the movie screen, Chad Oulson, 43, and his wife, Nicole, 33, became trapped in their own horror in the audience that ended with the husband shot to death and a retired police captain facing murder charges, all from a dispute about texting, authorities said.

Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are increasingly borrowing border-patrol drones for domestic surveillance operations, newly released records show, a harbinger of what is expected to become the commonplace use of unmanned aircraft by police.

Customs and Border Protection, which has the largest U.S. drone fleet of its kind outside the Defense Department, flew nearly 700 such surveillance missions on behalf of other agencies from 2010 to 2012, according to flight logs released recently in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a civil-liberties group.

    License to Kill

No one knows how many times police shoot and kill Americans every year. Most estimates put the number at a few hundred a year, but we don’t know the details, including how many of these killed people presented a real threat to anyone. The U.S. government does not do body counts.

Law enforcement has become comparably brutal to the armed forces overseas, including in what has become standard operating procedure in the hundred SWAT raids performed every day across this country, the vast majority of which are launched to serve warrants to people accused of non-violent offenses.

It is the nature of the state that acts that would be considered criminal if conducted by private individuals are legal if done by the government. Government is a monopoly on legal violence, after all. In today’s America, this reality is no clearer than with the burgeoning police state, whose agents routinely commit violent acts that would condemn most of us to a cell for decades

Criminological literature has indicated that police officers tend to have more in common with the criminals they arrest than many people assume. Studies indicate, for example, that 40% of police families experience domestic violence—a rate two to four times as high as we see in the general population.
