Dog stays by missing boy’s side

the daughter just left to take the SAT a third time. She's almost aced the thing, but every point she improves makes her that much more attractive to various schools and also more access to scholarships. At $250 per test, she may end up saving me tens of thousands of dollars by boosting her SAT scores.

    That's a very good thing.

She better decide where she's going to go soon. She's running out of time. This should be done before the end of January and that's right around the corner.

Putting a kid through a four year college is an investment in the range of buying a typical home. It's an enormous investment. GovCo will offer no assistance other than letting young people exit college with a huge amount of debt and I'm not going to let that happen to my kids. I've worked my ass of for this and planned accordingly.

The third time is a charm, as they say...

Why dogs are better than people

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Connecticut State Trooper was charged with stealing items from the scene of a fatal accident that occurred on the Merritt Parkway earlier this year, according to state police reports.

A man died in a motorcycle accident near exit 44 on the Merritt Parkway just before midnight Sept. 22.

After the scene was cleared, family members reported that some of the victim’s jewelry and cash was missing, according to police reports.

my younger brother rescued a black lab mix that wandered out of the woods behind his house. He lived out in the country on about an acre or so of land. My brother was making gumbo and fed some to the dog. I think the dog either ate 2 or 3 bowls of gumbo, and so they named the dog gumbo. Good dog. When my nephews were small and they started getting too close to the road, Gumbo would gently tug them back towards the house so they wouldn't get run over. That was a great dog and watched over those boys like they were his own.

I LOVE this story, not only from a national perspective, but a personal one! I have my own two 'Geeks', graduates of MIT & Caltech(California Institute of Technology, having garnered number 1, and MIT number 7, on the top 400 schools in the world, according to Times Higher Education, 2011-2012). They are now IDF reservists.

It doesn't get any 'Geekier' than the above. No matter. They are now running circles around the so called 'cool' crowd. The heretofore 'Geeks' rule!!

  33. During the 1980s we supported Saddam Hussein in the Iran-Iraq war. Our
ambassador then famously advised Hussein that his dispute with Kuwait
did not concern the U.S. This translated into approval to attack, and
the result was the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

    ReplyDelete
  34. In 2003, on the pretext of weapons of mass destruction, we again attacked Iraq. An estimated 100,000 Iraqi citizens were killed; about 2 million fled as refugees. Further results: 4,000 U.S. dead, 30,000 maimed, and $1 trillion spent to replace a Sunni tyrant with a parliament dominated by the party of a Shiite cleric who hates the U.S., has strong ties to Iran, and fought us with his militia. In short, our efforts there have ended in a total failure.

We supported the mujahedin against the Russians in Afghanistan. When they left, so did we; this provided the political vacuum that allowed the Taliban to rise. Al-Qaida set up operations as guests of the Taliban and planned the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks from Afghanistan. Since our invasion of that country, more than 2,000 U.S. troops have been killed; the cost is more than $500 billion; and Afghans that we have trained — incensed by Quran burnings and the deaths of civilians — are killing our military. When we leave, the Taliban will return to power.

Meanwhile, nearby Pakistan provided sanctuary for Osama bin Laden for several years; the Pakistani people despise us for our drone attacks killing innocents; and segments of the Pakistan military and intelligence service support the Taliban. Saudi Wahabbists provide funds for religious schools in the Pakistan/Afghanistan border region, which teach hatred for the U.S. and provide thousands of Taliban recruits every year.

For 40 years, every administration has careened from one debacle to another in the Middle East and North Africa and gradually turned the region over to Muslim fundamentalists. We are now on the cusp of a new financial crisis and cannot weather another military disaster. We need to pack up our kit and leave the region before we segue into another costly, unwinnable war, this time with Iran, or get further enmeshed in Gaza and Syria.

Students at Harvard University awoke Friday morning to inflammatory club invitations slid under their doors that stated, “Jews need not apply,” “No f–king Jews” and “Coloreds OK,” student newspaper the Harvard Crimson reported.

The invitations were for “The Pigeon,” said to be “Harvard’s Newest Final Club.” Final clubs are exclusive social clubs not recognized by the university.

Three virtues listed at the top of the invitation were “inclusion,” “diversity” and “love,” each with the following caveats: “inclusion” (“Jews need not apply”); “diversity” (“Seriously, no f–king Jews. Coloreds OK”); and “love” (“Rophynol” — a misspelling of the date rape drug Rohypnol, or “roofies.”)

In an appearance on NBC’s “Today” show in October, Clinton said she’s “privileged” to have had the opportunity to serve her country, but -- “I’m really old-fashioned,” she said. “I feel I have made my contribution. I have done the best I can. But now I want to try some other things. I want to get back to writing and maybe some teaching, working on women and girls around the world.”

It is our hope that this information will be useful to both sustainment and maneuver commanders, that it will constitute a historical survey of recent drawdown operations, and that it will offer tactics, techniques, and procedures that can be used today and in the future to assist cornmanders at all levels with the planning and execution of the responsible drawdown of forces."

  88. Bill Murray on Gilda Radner:

“Gilda got married and went away. None of us saw her anymore. There was one good thing: Laraine had a party one night, a great party at her house. And I ended up being the disk jockey. She just had forty-fives, and not that many, so you really had to work the music end of it. There was a collection of like the funniest people in the world at this party. Somehow Sam Kinison sticks in my brain. The whole Monty Python group was there, most of us from the show, a lot of other funny people, and Gilda. Gilda showed up and she’d already had cancer and gone into remission and then had it again, I guess. Anyway she was slim. We hadn’t seen her in a long time. And she started doing, “I’ve got to go,” and she was just going to leave, and I was like, “Going to leave?” It felt like she was going to really leave forever.

So we started carrying her around, in a way that we could only do with her. We carried her up and down the stairs, around the house, repeatedly, for a long time, until I was exhausted. Then Danny did it for a while. Then I did it again. We just kept carrying her; we did it in teams. We kept carrying her around, but like upside down, every which way—over your shoulder and under your arm, carrying her like luggage. And that went on for more than an hour—maybe an hour and a half—just carrying her around and saying, “She’s leaving! This could be it! Now come on, this could be the last time we see her. Gilda’s leaving, and remember that she was very sick—hello?”

We worked all aspects of it, but it started with just, “She’s leaving, I don’t know if you’ve said good-bye to her.” And we said good-bye to the same people ten, twenty times, you know.

And because these people were really funny, every person we’d drag her up to would just do like five minutes on her, with Gilda upside down in this sort of tortured position, which she absolutely loved. She was laughing so hard we could have lost her right then and there.

It was just one of the best parties I’ve ever been to in my life. I’ll always remember it. It was the last time I saw her.”

Once you figure out the right mix for the batter, the proper temp to preheat the pan, it's really elementary.

A little whipped cream on top and viola! Is magnifique!

"For a physicist it's an immediate signal that there is some missing understanding of how nature works," Krioukov said. It's more likely that some unknown law governs the way networks grow and change, from the smallest brain cells to the growth of mega-galaxies, Krioukov said.

"This result suggests that maybe we should start looking for it," Krioukov told LiveScience.
