Pearly Queen

Do not give dogs what is sacred;
do not cast your pearls before swine.
If you do,
they may trample them under their feet,
and turn and tear you to pieces.

Thats funny because we were dry before the rest of the state way back then also. Booze had to be smuggled in by some pretty crazy routes...from wet towns to here.

  6. While bemoaning Brooklyn’s yuppification, many say, “I miss old New York,” but the same way Germans idolize Native Americans they’ve never met, outsiders worship native New Yorkers without having any clue about how they act.

When I think of real New Yorkers, I think of Irish and Italians born and raised in Brooklyn. This borough is what keeps Manhattan alive. As far as I’m concerned, it saved the world from fascism. (Is there a soldier in a WWII film who doesn’t have a Brooklyn accent?) After getting to know some Brooklynites, I realized they are way weirder than I originally thought. Their customs and traditions are as unique as the Amish and their culture is equally untouched. Most of the purists would be totally uncomfortable around the lost tribes of Brooklyn they so staunchly defend.

  9. Brooklyn is really yuppified. Most of the young folks there have arrived within the past few years... this is not good. Taxes (aligned with inflated property values) are driving the true "natives" out (Like Seatlle?) and traditional businesses can no longer operate.

This will be a replay of Tribeca and the Village. It is very sad to see the New Yorkers displaced as if they were world war two refugees.... to be replaced by heartless little shits...and Walmart/Starbucks!

  12. In Which Harold and Kumar Go Into Hiding
    Well, dammit.

I was so very excited about all that sensible drug policy we were going to get out of President Obama in his second term. I mean sure, Obama had spent a good deal of his first term waging more raids on medical marijuana clinics in four years than Bush had waged in eight. And his administration defended DEA agents who point guns at the heads of children during drug raids. And his appointees continued to defend the carnage in Mexico as merely the consequence of good, sensible drug policy.

Sure. There was all of that. But there were also all of these progressive pundits who kept telling drug war reformers that they should go ahead and vote for Obama anyway . . . because they just knew, or at least they were pretty sure, or at least they had heard rumors, that maybe, possibly, Obama would turn the corner and show some leadership.

  22. From the DoJ:

Because recording police officers in the public discharge of their duties is protected by the First Amendment, policies should prohibit interference with recording of police activities except in narrowly circumscribed situations. More particularly, policies should instruct officers that, except under limited circumstances, officers must not search or seize a camera or recording device without a warrant. In addition, policies should prohibit more subtle actions that may nonetheless infringe upon individuals’ First Amendment rights. Officers should be advised not to threaten, intimidate, or otherwise discourage an individual from recording police officer enforcement activities or intentionally block or obstruct cameras or recording devices.

Policies should prohibit officers from destroying recording devices or cameras and deleting recordings or photographs under any circumstances. In addition to violating the First Amendment, police officers violate the core requirements of the Fourteenth Amendment procedural due process clause when they irrevocably deprived individuals of their recordings without first providing notice and an opportunity to object. See Mathews v. Eldridge, 424 U.S. 319, 333 (1976) (“The right to be heard before being condemned to suffer grievous loss of any kind . . . is a principle basic to our society.”); Stotter v. Univ. of Tex. at San Antonio, 508 F.3d 812, 823 (5th Cir. 2007) (The notice defendant provided to the plaintiff “was insufficient to satisfy due process because [plaintiff] did not receive the notice until after his personal property was allegedly discarded . . . . [D]iscarding [plaintiff’s] personal property in this manner violated his procedural due process rights.”).

  24. Of course, it's far easier to explain the problem than it is to fix it. Because we're a species of storytellers, we find movie-plot threats uniquely compelling. A single vivid scenario will do more to convince people that photographers might be terrorists than all the data I can muster to demonstrate that they're not.

Luciano Mares told the Associated Press that he found the mouse in his Fort Sumner, New Mexico home and immediately treated the creature with scorn.

“I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire,” Mares said. “The mouse was on fire and ran back at the house.”

The fire completely destroyed the home, but Mares was unharmed.

“I’ve seen numerous house fires, but nothing as unique as this one,” local fire chief Jim Lyssy told the AP.

    The mouse’s whereabouts are unknown

  32. A caller to The Hagmann & Hagmann Radio Report said that she took her daughter to a medical facility for treatment of an illness on December 4, 2012. Among the forms she was handed was a two-page privacy notice that she was given pursuant to state and federal law. Upon arriving back home and after things settled down, she decided to review the paperwork she received from the medical facility - despite not having a magnifying glass that would have helped get through the tiny, 8 point font.

Buried in the middle of page two of this finely typed legal notice oriented in landscape format, located between the subheadings of “military” and “inmates” is an interesting addition to at least one hospital’s privacy disclosure statement. Under the heading of “National Security,” the notice states that the treating medical facility may disclose your health information to federal officials “in order to protect the President, other officials or foreign heads of state.”

Please stop here and carefully consider that statement. It is critical to point out that this statement is an addition to the typical national security warning seemingly ubiquitous in post 9-11 disclosure statements in America. It specifically identifies the President [of the United States], other officials or foreign heads of state. Again, please contemplate the meaning of these words, their intent and the context in which they are written.

Not only the questionable UN chief Ban Ki-moon has said finally that there is no confirmed information and also no reports that the Syrian government is preparing to use chemical weapons in the on-going conflict in this country of the Middle East, also other analysts and sources have stated that these claims are more a strategy than a real concern of the US administration and some European governments.

After the renewed headlines about the chemical weapons in Syria and the claims that the Syrian government would already prepare the use of such chemical weapons, it seems clear that this is again a strategy of propaganda in order to justify further actions against Syria.

In addition, the claims that parts of the Syrian armed forced would already load deadly nerve gas (e.g. sarin) into aerial bombs comes from the same warmongers that already justified the war against Iraq by these false claims about weapons of mass destruction, respectively even by the same so-called journalists.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday while he visited so-called Syrian refugee camps in Turkey that the UN would have received alarming news that the Syrian government may be preparing to use chemical weapons. But Ban Ki-moon also said that there are no confirmed reports on this matter.

Of course, the UN chief Ban Ki-moon said that it would be an “outrageous crime” with a lot of consequences if the Syrian leadership would use chemical weapons against Syrian civilians. That Ban Ki-moon has a huge problem with objectivity is nothing new, he was and is just a tool in a good and useful position.

As you can see by reference to these two pictures below, the same so-called “reliable sources” and journalists, media agency who already carried out the false propaganda against in Iraq in 2003 are now doing the same, in 2012 against Syria. It is surprising that the world still believes such “sources” and the journalists that have already lied about so many “facts”.

That NBC is one of the leading papers in this propaganda about Syria is, however, not surprising. NBC reported this week that the Syrian Arab army has already loaded the deadly nerve gas Sarin into aerial bombs.

He told me due to privacy laws, you can record a dozen angles of every move the customers (and the occasional crooks) make on video, but not their voices - at least that's the case here in PA.

If you're not selling the audio, I can't image anyone would ever have a beef. But to be safe I believe John T. has the right answer - try to avoid anything where specific conversations/words are discernible and capture the overall chatter. Anything more might require a release/consent form.

There's a reason you never see the faces of the people in the B-roll footage. (I wonder if anyone has ever recognized their own big bottom and sued the network news for broadcasting it with the news story on obesity.)

You could either try to be more discrete or go 180˚ the other way, and walk around with a large sandwich board, "Ambient Audio Recording In-Progress / Be Quiet, or Be Recorded... Your Choice."

  38. Are Cameras the New Guns?

    by WENDY MCELROY

In response to a flood of Facebook and YouTube videos that depict police abuse, a new trend in law enforcement is gaining popularity. In at least three states (Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maryland), it is now illegal to record an on-duty police officer even if the encounter involves you and may be necessary to your defense, and even if the recording is on a public street where no expectation of privacy exists.

The legal justification for arresting the “shooter” rests on existing wiretapping or eavesdropping laws, with statutes against obstructing law enforcement sometimes cited. Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maryland are among the 12 states in which all parties must consent for a recording to be legal unless, as with TV news crews, it is obvious to all that recording is underway. Since the police do not consent, the camera-wielder can be arrested. Most all-party-consent states also include an exception for recording in public places where “no expectation of privacy exists” (Illinois does not) but in practice this exception is not being recognized.

Massachusetts attorney June Jensen represented Simon Glik who was arrested for such a recording. She explained, “[T]he statute has been misconstrued by Boston police. You could go to the Boston Common and snap pictures and record if you want.” Legal scholar and professor Jonathan Turley agrees, “The police are basing this claim on a ridiculous reading of the two-party consent surveillance law — requiring all parties to consent to being taped. I have written in the area of surveillance law and can say that this is utter nonsense.”

The courts, however, disagree. A few weeks ago, an Illinois judge rejected a motion to dismiss an eavesdropping charge against Christopher Drew, who recorded his own arrest for selling one-dollar artwork on the streets of Chicago. Although the misdemeanor charges of not having a peddler’s license and peddling in a prohibited area were dropped, Drew is being prosecuted for illegal recording, a Class I felony punishable by 4 to 15 years in prison.

  40. Audio Recording in Public Places Can Be Serious Crime in Illinois

Twenty-first century technology makes it easy to record events throughout the world, but that ease of recording may violate the law. In Illinois, making audio recordings of conversations in public places without the permission of everyone in the recording is usually a crime. Under the Illinois Eavesdropping Act, recording police officers can lead to a class 1 felony, which can carry a four to 15 year prison sentence. Illinois Public Media's Sean Powers reports on efforts to soften the eavesdropping law for both the public and police officers.

Eavesdropping Laws Mean That Turning On an Audio Recorder Could Send You to Prison

Christopher Drew is a 60-year-old artist and teacher who wears a gray ponytail and lives on the North Side. Tiawanda Moore, 20, a former stripper, lives on the South Side and dreams of going back to school and starting a new life.

About the only thing these strangers have in common is the prospect that by spring, they could each be sent to prison for up to 15 years.

“That’s one step below attempted murder,” Mr. Drew said of their potential sentences.

The crime they are accused of is eavesdropping.

The authorities say that Mr. Drew and Ms. Moore audio-recorded their separate nonviolent encounters with Chicago police officers without the officers’ permission, a Class 1 felony in Illinois, which, along with Massachusetts and Oregon, has one of the country’s toughest, if rarely prosecuted, eavesdropping laws.

“Before they arrested me for it,” Ms. Moore said, “I didn’t even know there was a law about eavesdropping. I wasn’t trying to sue anybody. I just wanted somebody to know what had happened to me.”

  42. Simon Glik, a lawyer, was walking down Tremont Street in Boston when he saw three police officers struggling to extract a plastic bag from a teenager’s mouth. Thinking their force seemed excessive for a drug arrest, Glik pulled out his cellphone and began recording.

Within minutes, Glik said, he was in handcuffs.

“One of the officers asked me whether my phone had audio recording capabilities,’’ Glik, 33, said recently of the incident, which took place in October 2007. Glik acknowledged that it did, and then, he said, “my phone was seized, and I was arrested.’’

    The charge? Illegal electronic surveillance.

Syria warned on Saturday that rebels could use chemical weapons in their fight against President Bashar al-Assad's forces, and insisted that the regime will never unleash such arms on its own people.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague, however, said there was evidence the Damascus government could actually employ chemical weapons stocks in the conflict which a rights group says has killed at least 42,000 people in nearly 21 months.

"Terrorist groups may resort to using chemical weapons against the Syrian people... after having gained control of a toxic chlorine factory" east of Aleppo, the foreign ministry said, using the government term for rebel groups.

  68. Ok my little white people friends..... this is for the first candle lighting of Hanukkah or even Chanukkah!

SWEET POTATO LATKES (a MUST for the Jew Holiday....along with jelly donuts)

Sweet potato latkes have become a tradition of mine during Hanukkah season.

This year it was no different. The recipe is pretty basic and can be easily altered.

Grated sweet potatoes, scallions, salt & pepper, beaten egg, paprika, flour.

In terms of the method - latkes are usually fried in oil, on both sides.

With sweet potatoes, the sugar content is very high, and they burn quite easily.

To prevent this, I fried latkes on one side for a few minutes, until the edges started to brown. Then, I flipped them on the other side and placed the entire pan in a preheated 375F oven for 10 minutes. They were delicious.

I had them with sour cream, BBQ sauce (homemade), and chopped cilantro.

Latkes with Red Onions & Parsley

Before anyone says anything, I know that prosciutto is not Kosher, and that eating meat with milk products is not Kosher. Luckily, I don't stick to these rules.

And now to an awesome latkes recipe with red onions and parsley, served with browned prosciutto and sour cream.

    Ingredients

    2 Yukon potatoes, peeled
    1/4 red onion
    1 egg
    salt and pepper
    2 tablespoons minced parsley
    oil for sautéing
toppings: cubed and browned prosciutto, sour cream, more parsley

    Directions

    1. In a food processor grate potatoes and onions. Squeeze out all the liquid.
    2. Mix potatoes and onion with an egg, salt & pepper and parsley.
    3. Heat oil (I used avocado oil) in an iron skillet.
    4. Form latkes and cook 4-6 minutes on each side. (For best results, use a fish spatula to flip them).
    5. For a meat free and kosher dish, serve with sour cream and parsley.

    6. If you love pork, add some browned prosciutto!

Jelly doughnuts have been a family tradition since I can remember. We were never much of a junk food family, but doughnuts were always the exception. My dad would return from the farmers market with a box filled with an assortment of doughnuts, and I would go straight for jelly. I'd take a bite out of the plump dough, not knowing whether the jelly would squeeze into my mouth or out the other end.

Jelly doughnuts (called Sufganiyah in Hebrew) are a traditional Hanukkah dessert. The hot oil they are fried in is meant to symbolize the oil that miraculously burnt for the eight days of Hanukkah.

In Israel, families gathered after sundown for the lighting, eating traditional snacks of potato pancakes (latkes) and doughnuts (sufganiyot) and exchanging gifts.

Local officials lit lamps set up in public places while families displayed the nine-candle lamps, called menoras, in their windows or in special windproof glass boxes outside.

In Ohio, the first public candle lighting on Saturday will be by Holocaust survivor Abe Weinrib, who turns 100 next week. Weinrib, who will light the first candle on a 13-foot public menora at Easton Town Center in Columbus, said his biggest triumph was surviving the Holocaust, the Nazi campaign to eliminate Jews in Europe.

Weinrib told The Columbus Dispatch newspaper that he was arrested while working in Polish factories owned by his uncle when he was in his 20s. He spent six years imprisoned in camps, including the notorious Auschwitz.

A man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after police pulled him over and found he was driving with a portion of a traffic sign embedded into his head, ActionNewsJax.com reported.

Florida Highway Patrol says Leslie Richard Newton, 63, of St. Augustine, was driving a gray Camaro eastbound on SR 16 when he hit a sign. He continued driving and was eventually pulled over on U.S. 1 just north of SR 16 with a portion of the traffic sign in his head.

For a lesson in the dangers of falling in love with your client, look at Iraq: U.S. officials, starting with President George W. Bush and Gen. David Petraeus, kept lauding Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, despite warnings from many Iraqis that he was a conspiratorial politician who would end up siding with Iran. This misplaced affection continued into the Obama administration: Even after the Iraqi people in their wisdom voted in 2010 to dump Maliki, the United States helped him cobble together enough support to remain in power. Arab observers are still scratching their heads trying to understand that one.

For the moment, Mrs. Clinton may appear to be a figure of nearly limitless possibility, and her name has come up for prestigious jobs: president of Yale University, head of George Soros’s foundation. But being Hillary Clinton is never a simple matter, and her next few years are less a blank check than an equation with multiple variables. Her status is singular but complicated: half an ex-presidential partnership, a woman at the peak of her influence who will soon find herself without portfolio, and an instant presidential front-runner

so let me get this straight, alright?

I'm the bad guy because I didn't got to a freakin' wedding for some people I don't know and could care less about? Is that the way it works? Hell, I had to drive the boy to a birthday party last night and pick him up. I'm not sure how that being in two places at one-time thing works.

people I don't know/my son. Fuck people I don't know. They aren't from my tribe.

I'm wearing shorts but it's downright frosty in this house this morning.

Also, I'm not going to Connecticut for Christmas. This makes me an uber creep. All I do is freeze my ass off, I wake up about the time this crew goes to bed, and I get no fookin' sleep at all. I've opted out this year. I'm pretty much done with those marathons in agony. With the snowstorm a couple years ago, I'd catch 15 minutes of shit for grabbing a smoke once every 3 or 4 hours.

I'm in a grumpy mood this morning and just wish that I wasn't catching such a huge ration of shit for what I see as a reasonable response.

I work three times as hard as I would normally have to to accomodate my lovely wifes tennis and work schedule (meaing I do all of the dawgone work) so that she can keep her busy tennis and work schedule. I wear both hats.

Okay. I have that off of my chest now and breathing is returning to normal I guess. I'll just continue to drive on as always.

  132. Often when watching American films from the 1940s or ’50s, rather than the story line I focus on what was things that were not consciously intended to be part of the film. Hitchcock movies are especially good for this. So are the Bogart movies. Try Dark Passage (1947) with Bogart and Bacall, about an escaped convict who befriends a woman who agrees to help him find who really killed his wife. If you can do it without crying, watch the background scenery of San Francisco in mid 20th century. Notice how magnificent the city seems, how clean, how broad and sunlit the horizon. This is film noir but even the induced murk fails to cut off the sense of unbounded promise that exists just beyond the camera’s focus. Watch the pace of the city that appears in the background, the people walking down the street, the way they interact, the way they dress. Look at how an unspoken code of manners is guiding every person in the background. See how the man in the suit opens the door for the lady in the dress. Notice the assured masculinity of the men, the charming femininity of the women as they get off the train. That’s not intended to be in the film. They didn’t have any opinions about all this in 1947; it just was. Look at the man casually talking to his friend on a street corner, there is an ease and congeniality that is terrifying to watch. Or the couple sharing a cup of coffee in a café, they have all the time in the world.

You forget to wonder who killed Vincent Parry’s wife, and are instead crushed by a question that becomes very personal and bitter: Who killed America? This is how Americans felt about their country in 1947, now ask yourself what sense of America is informing The Dark Knight Rises. What better way to show what fifty years of liberal social “progress” and mass immigration has wrought than a constant showing of these films?

His main targets on the right are the neocons who, he claims, are able to identify the problem of radical Islam but refuse to do anything substantial about it such as reducing or eliminating Islamic immigration. Rather, in his view, neoconservatives advocate nation building abroad, and fail to recognize the religion of Islam itself as the cause of Islamic radicalism. He also criticizes paleoconservatives such as Patrick Buchanan for their criticism of Israel and what Auster sees as barely disguised anti-Semitism.

El-Magd said she interrupted the lecture at this point and called El-Erian a “liar and a murderer.”

Brotherhood supporters then attacked her and her husband, she said, and a man wearing an orange pullover hit her on the head.

A video shot by an audience member shows a hysterical El-Magd being thrown out of the hall.

“Get your ****** hands off me,” El-Magd screamed. “Get your people under control and tell them not to touch me.”

Once outside, El-Magd and other Egyptian activists began chanting against El-Erian and the Brotherhood. She was then approached by a police officer who informed her that she was under arrest.

“What [will you arrest me] for,” asked El-Magd. “I have every right to protest. This is my constitutional right. I am an American citizen.”

After she was put in the police car, a policeman explained that he had asked her repeatedly to leave and she had refused.

The phones used as warning systems could make a life or death difference in the seconds one might have before meeting up with the next event. "We are trying to set up a whole new network of smartphones so we can use the accelerometers in the smartphones to detect earthquakes," a team spokesman told BBC News. With so many devices in circulation, detailed information could be known on who felt what, where.
