The Great Cock & Seagull Race

Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground
all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky.
He brought them to the man
to see what he would name them;
and whatever the man called each living creature,
that was its name.

A cannibal cult leader calling himself Black Jesus, who slaughtered his 'Flower
Girl' followers and drank their blood, has himself been murdered in the jungles
    of Papua New Guinea.

In flowing robes, Stephen Tari, 40, a failed Bible student, once led 6,000
'disciples' through the mountainous regions of the country, but was accused of
killing at least three young girls and, as their mothers were forced to watch,
    drinking their blood.

Calling himself 'the true Christ', he was convicted of only rape three years ago
    - before the country brought in new laws that meant convicted killers and
rapists could receive the death penalty - and was among 48 prisoners who broke
out of jail six months ago.

U.S. Attack on Syria Won’t Change Anything

Forgot about the hysteria of an impending U.S. attack on Syria. Forget about the likely self-congratulatory backslapping by policy makers and the chanting of, “USA!” by citizens. A U.S. air assault on Syria will not change anything for the benefit of U.S. interests or even for the well-being of the Syrian people.

Clearly, it will not change the regional problems, including the U.S. support for an Islamist government in Egypt, the unstable Islamist government in Tunisia, the grim expectations for a “peace process,” the constant betrayal of the United States by the Turkish government, and the Iranian nuclear race. But beyond that, it won’t change the Syrian crisis.

Imagine that the U.S. policy doesn’t even have Britain on board! Obama cannot even line up America”s closest historic partner. How’s that for credibility?

  22. To strike, or not to strike: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous Assad,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To attack: to dither
No more; and by attack to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That Syria is heir to, ’tis a consummation
    Devoutly to be wish’d. To act, to attack;
    To attack: perchance to depose: ay, there’s the rub;
For in its wake what next may come
Whether or not Assad shuffles off this worldwide stage,
Should give us pause: there’s the respect
    That makes calamity of intervention;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,
The pangs of chemical war, the law’s delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his mark make
With a bare missile? who would tyrants bear,
To defy the red lines that he drew?
But that the dread of something afterward,
The unknown consequences in whose grip
A legacy might founder, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
    Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.–Soft you now!
The fair MSM! Sycophants, in thy orisons
    Be all my sins forgotten.

One day last January, Robert Ethan Saylor, a 26-year-old man with Down syndrome, went to see the movie "Zero Dark Thirty." When it was over, Saylor briefly left the theater, then decided to return and see it again. The manager called security because Saylor didn't pay, and three off-duty deputies, moonlighting at the mall, came in to confront him.

According to Frederick County, Maryland, police statements, he swore at them and refused to leave. The deputies tried to remove him, despite Saylor's caretaker's warnings and pleas for them to wait and let her take care of it. What happened next is a little unclear, but witnesses say the deputies put Saylor on the floor, held him down and handcuffed him. Saylor, called Ethan by his family, suffered a fracture in his throat cartilage. He died of asphyxiation.

The death was ruled a homicide, but a grand jury failed to indict the deputies and they returned to work without charges.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that any international military intervention against Syria should be aimed at bringing an end to the rule of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"It can't be a 24 hours hit-and-run," Erdogan told reporters at a reception in the presidential palace in Ankara. "What matters is stopping the bloodshed in Syria and weakening the regime to the point where it gives up," he said. (Reuters)

This time, the drop is largely due to foreign policy concerns. Only 41% approve of the way Obama is handling foreign policy, the lowest ever. Consider that just last December, 52% approved of the way he was handling foreign policy.

The drop in satisfaction in foreign policy comes as Obama has ramped up talk for military action in Syria. According to the poll, Americans aren’t very satisfied with the way he has approached U.S. involvement in that conflict, either. Only 35% approve, and 44% disapprove.

The poll also showed the quagmire facing Obama as he decides how to proceed in Syria. Almost four in five Americans think that Obama should seek Congressional approval before moving forward with any strikes in Syria

Ohio State University Muslim Student Association President Arrested in Egypt
    http://www.aina.org/news/20130830122546.htm
CAIRO -- Security officials say the son of an outspoken Muslim Brotherhood figure has been detained.

Mohamed Soltan's family says he is a U.S. citizen and does not know his whereabouts. An active supporter of the Islamist group online, the 25-year-old had posted pictures of his arm after it was shot when security forces cleared out two Brotherhood sit-ins Aug. 14.

The Ohio State University graduate is the son of outspoken Muslim Brotherhood figure Salah Soltan. He was detained Monday along with four other men in the office of the pro-Brotherhood Rassd Network News service, according to security officials who spoke anonymously in line with regulations and released the information to The Associated Press late that same night.

Police said the group had plans to spread violence by inciting splits among the ranks of the army and police.

What the US Can Do to Help Christians in Egypt and Syria

George: The situation in Egypt and the equally horrific situation in Syria illustrate the general plight of Christians in the Middle East. These are very ancient Christian communities, going back nearly to the foundations of Christianity, in many cases. Yet, over a number of years now we’ve seen the erosion of these communities, to the point where one begins to become concerned that before too long there will be no Christian communities left in the Middle East. The Christian community in Iraq was devastated as a result of the Iraq war. Many, many Iraqi Christians fled. In many cases, they fled to Syria, of all places, and now what do we see? They’re now having to flee from Syria.

The native Syrian Christian population, as well as Christian refugees from Iraq and elsewhere, is now at grave risk. Of course, it’s not just Christians who are suffering in Syria or in Egypt, but just for the moment I’m talking about Christians. The native Christian Syrian population, which is an ancient Church—it’s actually the Church of my father and his ancestors—is now in peril. My own Syrian relatives have left and are in the United States and will probably never be able to return to their homes.

The same thing is now happening in Egypt, of course, with the Coptic Christians, who have always been at risk and have been subjected to persecutions frequently over the centuries. They are now being brutally attacked, made scapegoats. The attacks come not from simply one sector of the general Egyptian society but from several different sectors. Their churches have been burned, their businesses have been attacked, a large number have been murdered. Again, a very ancient Middle Eastern Christian community is under assault. We will begin to see and are already seeing Coptic refugees fleeing Egypt.

So, it’s a tragedy. It should be of concern to Christians around the world. This is the very cradle of Christianity, the Middle East. These are ancient Christian communities, and it should be of concern to the entire world. Too often, especially in the Western media, including here in the United States, there is an ideological tendency to treat Christians as if they can only be persecutors, and never the persecuted. But if we look at what is happening now to these ancient Christian communities across the Middle East, as well as what’s happening to Christians in Africa and some parts in Asia, you see that very, very often today Christians are the persecuted, and the persecutions are quite brutal.

CWR: You mentioned your family. Are you yourself Orthodox?

George: No, I’m Catholic. My mother is Italian Catholic, but my father’s family is Syrian Orthodox—Antiochian Orthodox. They are people of deep Christian faith.

An Egyptian Christian leader is calling out President Barack Obama and his administration for not doing enough in face of intense persecution against the Church by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Following the recent barrage of church burnings, Father Rafic Greiche, the chief spokesman for the Catholic Church in Egypt, criticized President Obama for not speaking out against the worst violence against Egyptian Christians in nearly 700 years.

"President Obama when he made a speech he just touched on the burning churches instead of telling the Muslim Brotherhood that they are terrorists and they are making terror on Egypt," Greiche said. "He did not speak loud for this and shame on him if he is a Christian that he does not speak out loud."

"The spokesman of the White House who…was asked 'What is the red line for the Christians in Egypt?' he mocked and said, 'I didn't bring my red pen," he noted.

"So I think it was a mockery and not at its place and really shame on him also," he said.

Radical Islamists, many members of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, attacked at least 60 churches, Christian businesses, and institutions in the days following the crackdown against supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi.

"Obama does not appear to understand the situation," Greiche told AsiaNews. "In his speech he didn't even so much as mention all the churches and Christian buildings being burnt down by the Muslim Brotherhood."

"This must absolutely be made clear: the Muslim Brothers are terrorists and are tied to groups belonging to al Qaeda and to the Salafites," he said. "The history of the Muslim Brotherhood, even since their foundation, has been a history of 85 years of bloodshed."

Experts Fear U.S. Plan to Strike Syria Overlooks Risks

BEIRUT, Lebanon — President Obama says he is considering a “limited, narrow” military strike against Syria — an aim that many Middle East experts fear overlooks the potential to worsen the violence in Syria and intensify a fight for regional influence between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

“Our biggest problem is ignorance; we’re pretty ignorant about Syria,” said Ryan C. Crocker, a former ambassador to Syria and Lebanon, who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan and is dean of the Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University.

RIP Remembering José Madrigal Posted By Connie Sheu, Tuesday, August 27, 2013
    José Madrigal (1918-2013)

A living icon of guitar music in the Cincinnati area passed away on August 25, 2013.

José Madrigal was born in Michoacán, Mexico in 1918. A few years later, his family crossed the border seeking work and relief from civil war. They eventually settled in Blue Rock, Illinois (just south of Chicago), where José's father worked for the railroad. His mother died when José was around 11. While raising his younger siblings, he began playing a discarded guitar and soon found himself making more money for a single gig than his father could make in a week.

After the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, José enlisted in the army and fought bravely in Germany, winning several medals and US citizenship. His ability to master several languages, including German, became a useful skill, and he was often called upon to act as translator with POWs. After the war he found work playing guitar, and resumed his education, receiving a college degree in International Trade. Emulating Django Rinehardt and Chet Atkins, José listened to country western music and jazz standards on the radio, and soon became known by his many fans as "Country Joe". He also began exploring his musical heritage, following Andrés Segovia, and learning Spanish.

José soon found work in Ohio providing live music at radio station WHIO in Dayton. He married, raised several children, and joined the faculty at Northern Kentucky University. He retired in the early 90s, spending his later years teaching, building guitars, performing in a variety of styles and venues, and inspiring everyone whose life he touched with his music, and his indomitable, gentle spirit.

Washington: Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton outpaced
President Barack Obama last year in receiving lavish gifts from foreign
    leaders.

Clinton received gold jewellery worth half a million dollars from King
Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. The State Department said the gift included a necklace
bracelet, ring and earrings. The white gold was adorned with teardrop rubies and
diamonds. Clinton also got gold, sapphire and diamond jewellery worth $58,000
    (Dh212,984) from Brunei’s queen.

Obama’s most expensive gift was a $16,500 gold-plated clock from Crown Prince
Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Saudi defence minister.

Among those familiar with the true teachings of Islam, it is well known that the life — or as articulated in Arabic, the “blood” — of an infidel, that is, a non-Muslim, is not equal to the life/blood of a Muslim. Few know, however, that among some of Islam’s respected hadith collections, the blood of a non-Muslim is no better than the blood of a dog.

(Dog-lovers should bear in mind that, in Islam, to be compared to a dog is about the worst and most degrading insult.)

The IDF is bolstering forces in the north, in preparation for a possible attack by the US, Lebanese media reported Saturday, referring more specifically to areas in front of the blue line in east south Lebanon and upper Galilee and the Golan Heights.

According to reports, IAF planes are continually circling above the same areas in south Lebanon.

In addition, the IDF deployed all missile defense systems.

On Friday, the IDF deployed an Iron Dome battery in the Tel Aviv Metropolitan area. For the first time the battery is facing north.

The system was deployed as a precaution ahead of possible Syrian retaliation to a potential US strike.

Iron Dome, Hetz and Patriot missile defense were also deployed in the north.

A security official told AFP Saturday that Syria expected a military attack "at any moment," just hours after UN experts probing a suspected gas attack blamed on the regime left the country.

Several countries have advised their citizens against traveling to Lebanon as regional tensions grow over a possible US military strike on Syria.

Those issuing the advice include Bahrain, Kuwait, Britain and France, while Austria told its citizens to contact its embassy in Lebanon before traveling there.

Bahrain and Kuwait also urged its nationals in the country to leave immediately, their state news agencies reported.

A senior security source in Lebanon said 14,000 people had left the country on Thursday alone, mostly Europeans. http://www.jpost.com/Breaking-News/European-Gulf-states-urge-nationals-to-leave-Lebanon-immediately-324841

This observer thinks Obama will launch an attack on Syria and it might well come on Sunday. I also think that a Syrian attack on Israel in retaliation will get little U.S. support because nothing Obama has said (his word is dirt) or done demonstrates any fondness for Israel.

A President who can turn his back on a longtime ally like Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak is not likely to feel any concern about Bibi Netanyahu’s little nation. Israel, however, is the only ally in the region with the capability of attacking Iran and damaging its nuclear capabilities.

Police Groups Furiously Protest Eric Holder's Marijuana Policy Announcement

WASHINGTON -- A broad coalition of law enforcement officers who have spent the past three decades waging an increasingly militarized drug war that has failed to reduce drug use doesn't want to give up the fight.

Organizations that include sheriffs, narcotics officers and big-city police chiefs slammed Attorney General Eric Holder in a joint letter Friday, expressing "extreme disappointment" at his announcement that the Department of Justice would allow Colorado and Washington to implement state laws that legalized recreational marijuana for adults.

If there had been doubt about how meaningful Holder's move was, the fury reflected in the police response eliminates it. The role of law enforcement is traditionally understood to be limited to enforcing laws, but police organizations have become increasingly powerful political actors, and lashed out at Holder for not consulting sufficiently before adopting the new policy.

Local law enforcement agencies rely heavily on the drug war for funding. Police departments are often able to keep a large portion of the assets they seize during drug raids, even if charges are never brought. And federal grants for drug war operations make up a sizable portion of local law enforcement funding. (Mercenary assholes!)

Cornel West had some harsh comments for MSNBC's Al Sharpton and Michael Eric Dyson Friday.

Early in the radio show "Smiley and West," West said of the previous day's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington, "We saw of course the coronation of the bonafide house negro of the Obama plantation, our dear brother Al Sharpton, supported by the Michael Dysons and others who’ve really prostituted themselves intellectually in a very ugly and vicious way" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

    http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2013/08/31/cornel-west-mlk-50-was-coronation-bonafide-house-negro-obama-plantati#ixzz2dXu6ot8m

    ReplyDelete
  139. BabbaZee9:12 PM

CORNEL WEST: Well, on the one hand as you can imagine, that was a beautiful thing. I was there in D.C. to see the magnificent expression of, like, faces and sparkling eyes of everyday people of all colors, hungry, thirsty for justice, hungry, thirsty for truth. Then you turn to so many of the major organizers and major speakers at the march – not too much truth. Not too much talk about justice. Mainly talking about voting rights, and every once in a while you see a vague reference to jobs.

Now, they had some wonderful speakers earlier in the day, but most of the country didn’t get a chance to hear them. But for the most part, there was, Brother Martin himself, I think, would’ve been turning over in his grave. He wants people to talk about Wall Street criminality, he wants people to talk about war crimes, or drones dropping bombs on innocent people. He wants people talking about the new Jim Crow and the privatization of education, and the various ways in which the well to do, the oligarchs and plutocrats are getting away with murder. You didn’t hear that whatsoever. You not only got a tame Martin Luther King Jr., but a real sense in which who he really was at the end of his life hardly surfaced at all.

And we saw of course the coronation of the bonafide house negro of the Obama plantation, our dear brother Al Sharpton supported by the Michael Dysons and others who’ve really prostituted themselves intellectually in a very ugly and vicious way.
