Easter Everywhere

1.       For praise; concerning the strength of the regular morning sacrifice; a psalm of David.
2.       My God, my God, why have you left me far from my redemption? – are the words of my outcry.
3.       O God, I call by day and you will not accept my prayer; and by night I have no quiet
4.       But you are holy, who make the world rest on the psalms of Israel.
5.       Our fathers hoped in you they hoped in your word, and you saved them.
6.       In your presence they prayed and were saved; and on you they relied, and were not disappointed.
7.       But I am a feeble worm, not a rational man; the reproach of the sons of men, and the butt of the Gentiles.
8.       All who see me will gloat over me, attacking with their lips; they will shake their heads.
9.       Let him give praise in the presence of the Lord; and he has delivered him, he saved him because he favored him.
10.    Because you took me out of the womb; you gave me hope on my mother’s breasts.
11.    By your aid I was pulled forth from her bowels; from my mother’s womb you are my God.
12.    Be not far from me, for trouble is near, for there is no redeemer.
13.    The Gentiles have surrounded me, who are like many bulls; the princes of Mathnan have hemmed me in.
14.    They open their mouths at me like a roaring and ravaging lion.
15.    Like water I am poured out; all my bones are crushed; my heart is melting like wax within my bowels.
16.    My strength has dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue is stuck to my palate; and you have brought me to the grave.
17.    Because the wicked have surrounded me, who are like many dogs; a gathering of evildoers has hemmed me in, biting my hands and feet like a lion.
18.    I will tell of all the wounds of my bones; those who see me despise me.
19.    They divide my clothing for themselves; and for my cloak they will cast lots.
20.    You, O Lord, do not be far off; O my strength, hurry to my aid.
21.    Save my soul from those who slay with the sword; from the power of the dog, save the breath of my body.
22.    Redeem me from the mouth of the lion; and from kings who are strong and tall as a bull you have received my prayer.
23.    I will tell of the might of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will praise you.
24.    O you who fear the Lord, sing praise in his presence; all the seed of Jacob, give him glory; and be afraid of him, all you seed of Israel.
25.    For he does not despise or scorn the prayer of the poor; and he has not removed his presence from their midst; and when they pray in his presence, he accepts their prayer.
26.    My psalm in the assembly of many people is from you; I will fulfill my vows before those who fear him.
27.    The humble will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will sing praise in his presence; the spirit of prophecy will dwell in the thoughts of your hearts forever.
28.    All the ends of the earth will remember his offerings and will repent in the presence of the Lord; and all the families of the Gentiles will bow down before you.
29.    For kingship is from the presence of the Lord, and he rules over the Gentiles.
30.    All who are fat on earth have eaten and bowed down; all who descend to the grave prostrate themselves before him; but the soul of the wicked shall not live.
31.    The seed of Abraham will worship in his presence; and they will tell the mighty greatness of the Lord to a later generation.
32.    Their children will return and recount his generosity; to his people yet to be born they will recount the wonders he performed.
~ Psalm 22
From the Aramaic Targums

  17. A less publicized driver has been private prison stocks. These companies manage prisons by contract, mostly for state and local governments in the U.S., which they claim they can do more efficiently than the governments themselves.

Business is reportedly solid, although U.S. prison populations did fall for two years through 2011, the latest year on record with the Justice Department.

But what's really driven share prices lately is the fact that the two leading players in the field, Corrections Corp. of America (CXW) and Geo Group (GEO), are in the process of converting themselves into real estate investment trusts.

CCA has actually been a REIT before. It converted to its present structure more than a decade ago. But according to Tobey Sommer, analyst with SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, the calculus changed recently when the two prison companies learned about taxable REIT subsidiaries.

It struck me that some of the rhetoric of the fascism you experienced, such as a lack of educational attainment proving one's purity, or the anti-Semitic association of Jews with city living, is similar to the anti-intellectual rhetoric of contemporary conservatism; you can't be a "real American" if you're too educated or your city is too big. Are these similarities meaningful, or are they the result of my efforts to find a personal connection with what I'm reading? How do you tell the difference?

When the welfare people can't get food, they will blame everyone else. Then the rioting will start. WE should be prepared with food and arms to protect ourselves. The DHS will send in the troops to quell the riots, mowing down lots of unarmed welfare people. Most of them will probably go willingly to the FEMA camps with promises of food and medical care. Fine. I'm not going, I will not comply, I will not give up my weapons. Let DHS use their resources to guard the FEMA camps. Less of them, more of us.

  56. Proposed Obama Trade Agreement would Ban Buy America Laws

A new free trade agreement being negotiated between the Obama administration and countries along the Pacific Rim could mean the end of the “Buy American” policy currently in effect.

The proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which has been negotiated largely in secret, would prevent the U.S. government from giving preference to American companies for federal contracts.

Around since the 1933, the so-called “Buy American” policy allows domestic companies to put in more costly bids for government work and still receive the contract, even if a foreign business offers to provide the product or service for less money.

News of this provision in the Trans-Pacific Partnership prompted 68 House Democrats and one Republican to urge President Barack Obama to reconsider any agreement that ends “Buy American.”

After having failed his exam in "Logistics and Organization", a student goes and confronts his lecturer about it.

Student: "Sir, do you really understand anything about the subject?"

Professor: "Surely I must. Otherwise I would not be a professor!"

Student: "Great, well then I would like to ask you a question.

    If
you can give me the correct answer, I will accept my mark as is and go.
If you however do not know the answer, I want you give me an "A" for
    the exam. "

Professor: "Okay, it's a deal. So what is the question?"

Student: "What is legal, but not logical, logical, but not legal, and neither logical, nor legal?"

    Even
after some long and hard consideration, the professor cannot give the
student an answer, and therefore changes his exam mark into an "A", as
    agreed.

Afterwards, the professor calls on his best student and asks him the same question.

    He
immediately answers: "Sir, you are 63 years old and married to a 35
year old woman, which is legal, but not logical. Your wife has a 25 year
old lover, which is logical, but not legal. The fact that you have
given your wife's lover an "A", although he really should have failed,
    is neither legal, nor logical."

That’s the question psychologist Robert Epstein has been asking in a series of experiments testing the impact of a fictitious search engine — he called it “Kadoodle” — that manipulated search rankings, giving an edge to a favored political candidate by pushing up flattering links and pushing down unflattering ones.

If your motto is "don't be evil," then you have defined anything you do, no matter how evil, as necessarily good. Avoiding evil is, after all, your motto---so anything you embark upon cannot be evil by definition.

It is mindsets like that that let evil in its full force loose upon the world.

"Don't be evil" is a "status" thing, while "do no wrong" requires constant reassessment of one's actions.

The first pre-emptively forgives one's self for any of one's actions---if one is committed to 'not being evil" then one has pre-emptively defined all one's actions, no matter how horrific, as "good," whereas a commitment to not "doing wrong" mandates exploration of each individual act.

The first is a guarantee of wrong, and ultimately of evil; the second is a safeguard against it.

  86. Ironically, with his veto, Governor Bullock has committed theft of a more serious nature.

A story on Bullock’s rejection of the bill published by U.S. News proclaims the decision to be a move toward “modernity.”

They have a point, though likely not the one they intended to make.

Bullock’s ignorance of the role of the right to keep and bear arms, as well as the role of the states in checking federal overreaches of its constitutional powers, is typical of many modern lawmakers and executives.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Despite the governor’s decision to anoint himself the giver and taker of rights, there is yet hope that the political will of the people of Montana will be done. Bullock's veto sends the bill back to the state legislature where a two-thirds majority vote of each chamber could override his decision.

  94. Oops, TSA guy goes spray-zy!

    By JOSH MARGOLIN

    Last Updated: 3:15 AM, March 27, 2013

A bumbling TSA agent “playing around” with a pepper-spray container at Kennedy Airport fired the caustic liquid at five fellow screeners yesterday, sending all six to the hospital, a source told The Post.

The agent, Chris Yves Dabel, discovered the device at the Terminal 2 security checkpoint and tried to determine if it was real, a source told The Post.

He told Port Authority cops that he “found the canister on the floor and thought it was a laser pointer.”

“They were playing around with it,” said one Kennedy Airport official.

The screener sprayed five other TSA agents around him, sending all six to Jamaica Hospital and halting security checks at Kennedy for at least 15 minutes, police said.

No passengers reported injuries. Dabel refused medical attention.

TSA officials scrambled to keep the embarrassing incident under wraps yesterday — until The Post began inquiring about it, a source said.

The agency has been plagued with a rash of humiliating incidents at area airports — including the failure of Newark screeners in February to catch an undercover fed with a fake explosive stuffed in his pants at either of two checkpoints.

Authorities have called for a top-to-bottom review of that airport’s procedures.

I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:

  177. s there a greater gesture of intellectual contempt than the notion that a tweet constitutes an adequate intervention in a serious discussion? But when Thomas Nagel’s formidable book Mind and Cosmos recently appeared, in which he has the impudence to suggest that “the materialist neo-Darwinian conception of nature is almost certainly false,” and to offer thoughtful reasons to believe that the non-material dimensions of life—consciousness, reason, moral value, subjective experience—cannot be reduced to, or explained as having evolved tidily from, its material dimensions, Steven Pinker took to Twitter and haughtily ruled that it was “the shoddy reasoning of a once-great thinker.” Fuck him, he explained.

  181. Why Not Separate Marriage and State?
    http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/344258/why-not-separate-marriage-and-state-john-fund

Both sides operate from the shaky premise that government must be the arbiter of this dispute. Columnist Andrew Sullivan, a crusader for gay marriage, has written that “marriage is a formal, public institution that only the government can grant.” But that’s not so. Marriage predates government. Marriage scholar Lawrence Stone has noted that in the Middle Ages it was “treated as a private contract between two families . . . For those without property, it was a private contract between two individuals enforced by the community sense of what was right.” Indeed, marriage wasn’t even regulated by law in Britain until the Marriage Acts of 1754 and 1835. Common-law unions in early America were long recognized before each state imposed a one-size-fits-all set of marriage laws.

    Game of Drones, VD Hanson

    ReplyDelete
  184. Since 2009, however, three unexpected developments have raised a national outcry about the use of drones. First, the politics of UAVs became almost surreal. Barack Obama, who ran in 2008 against the Bush-Cheney anti-terrorism protocols, arguing that they were either without utility or constitutional support, increased the frequency of drone attacks radically when he became president. Indeed, in just four years, he outdid the Bush total of eight years by a factor of six—to over 400 separate missions. Kills were now not just confined to enemy combatants on the battlefield, or even a top twenty cadre from the al Qaeda or Taliban high command, but, by 2013, may have accounted for somewhere between 2,500-3,500 deaths. Strikes blew up suspected enemies from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Yemen, Somalia, and Libya.
