RIP Tony Sheridan

Singer-songwriter Tony Sheridan, an early supporter of the Beatles, has died in Hamburg aged 72 following a long illness, German media have reported.

Sheridan used the Beatles, then known as the Silver Beatles, as his back-up band when they played in the nightclubs of Hamburg's red light district in the 1960s before they were famous.

Sheridan died on Saturday, Der Spiegel reported on its website, citing a post by the musician's family on facebook. A search by Reuters found no such post.

The Beatles, playing under another guise as "The Beat Brothers", also backed Sheridan on his song "My Bonnie" and Sheridan last year played at the 50th anniversary of the legendary Hamburg Star club.

A 1962 performance including Ringo Starr on the drums at the Star Club with songs such as "Roll Over Beethoven" was a watershed performance that helped catapult the Beatles to fame. They were Sheridan's warm-up act that night.

"Tony was a good guy who we knew and worked with from the early days in Hamburg," Paul McCartney said in a statement on his website. "We regularly watched his late night performances and admired his style. He will be missed."

David told the leaders of the Levites
to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians
to make a joyful sound with musical instruments:
lyres, harps and cymbals.

As for the gentleman on Twitter who dared me to cite an example, I’m happy to. If calling Sandra Fluke a “slut” last year for her position on contraception wasn’t the epitome of “crazy and stupid and dangerous,” allow me to explain the obvious.

It was crazy because it invented an irrational connection between her private sex life and her political position. It was stupid because calling someone a name is intellectually lazy. Make an actual argument. And it was dangerous because it trafficked in the same kind of misogyny that liberals use when they blast conservative women for being sluts, prudes or sexually repressed. And that fell right into the well-crafted but dishonest “war on women” narrative that liberals had set up to (successfully) get President Obama re-elected.

Rush is free to say whatever he wants, but how was that productive? And why did anyone defend it?

    15. "We must be careful about what we pretend to be."
In Mother Night, apolitical expatriate American playwright Howard W. Campbell, Jr. refashions himself as a Nazi propagandist in order to pass coded messages on to the U.S. generals and preserve his marriage to a German
woman—their "nation of two," as he calls it. But in serving multiple masters, Campbell ends up ruining his life and becoming an unwitting inspiration to bigots. In his 1966 introduction to the paperback edition, Vonnegut underlines Mother Night's moral: "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." That lesson springs to mind every time a comedian whose shtick relies on hoaxes and audience-baiting—or a political pundit who traffics in shock and hyperbole—gets hauled in front of the court of public opinion for pushing the act too far. Why can't people just say what they mean?

    "There
are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to
hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates
    with you, too."

    (Kurt Vonnegut )

Though this quote comes from the World War II-centered Mother Night (published in 1961), its wisdom and ugly truth still ring. Vonnegut (who often said "The only difference between Bush and Hitler is that Hitler was elected") was righteously skeptical about war, having famously survived the only one worth fighting in his lifetime. And it's never been more true: Left or right, Christian or Muslim, those convinced they're doing violence in service of a higher power and against an irretrievably inhuman enemy are the most dangerous creatures of all.

In exhaustive fashion (there are 65 pages of footnotes), Prioleau outlines the many traits that make classic ladies’ men irresistible; provides copious examples from throughout history, literature and modern culture; and rails against the romance-repelling pick-up scene of recent years as defined by Neil Strauss’ 2005 best-seller, “The Game.”

  56. EXCLUSIVE! MICHELLE OBAMA’s JEALOUS RAGE: “STAY AWAY FROM THAT WOMAN!”

MICHELLE OBAMA cast an ugly shadow over her husband’s second inauguration when she flew into a jealous rage over a sexy Hollywood star.

Sources in Washington, D.C., revealed exclusively to The ENQUIRER that the first lady, 49, exploded at Barack behind closed doors over “Scandal” beauty Kerry Washington.

Michelle is said to be so insecure about the president’s appeal to Kerry and other beauties she got a new hairstyle that takes years off her appearance and, coincidentally, closely resembles the 35-year-old actress’ look.

“Michelle’s jealous rage put a damper on the inauguration, but at least the meltdown took place behind closed doors,” a White House source told The ENQUIRER. “The public only saw her smiling and supporting him. But, believe me, it was one of their ugliest fights ever.

“Michelle got it in her mind that Barack was finagling to have Kerry added to more committees so they could spend time together.”

Meaningless words. In certain kinds of writing, particularly in art criticism and literary criticism, it is normal to come across long passages which are almost completely lacking in meaning.† Words like romantic, plastic, values, human, dead, sentimental, natural, vitality, as used in art criticism, are strictly meaningless, in

But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought. A bad usage can spread by tradition and imitation even among people who should and do know better. The debased language that I have been discussing is in some ways very convenient. Phrases like a not unjustifiable assumption, leaves much to be desired, would serve no good purpose, a consideration which we should do well to bear in mind, are a continuous temptation, a packet of aspirins always at one's elbow. Look back through this essay, and for certain you will find that I have again and again committed the very faults I am protesting against. By this morning's post I have received a pamphlet dealing with conditions in Germany. The author tells me that he "felt impelled" to write it. I open it at random, and here is almost the first sentence I see: "[The Allies] have an opportunity not only of achieving a radical transformation of Germany's social and political structure in such a way as to avoid a nationalistic reaction in Germany itself, but at the same time of laying the foundations of a co-operative and unified Europe." You see, he "feels impelled" to write -- feels, presumably, that he has something new to say -- and yet his words, like cavalry horses answering the bugle, group themselves automatically into the familiar dreary pattern. This invasion of one's mind by ready-made phrases (lay the foundations, achieve a radical transformation) can only be prevented if one is constantly on guard against them, and every such phrase anaesthetizes a portion of one's brain.

That is why the theological debates in the early church, leading up to Saint Augustine, were often cast as arguments about Judaizing. Marcion, a 2nd-century-CE heretic, followed Paul’s denigration of “the letter” to the point of discarding the entire Old Testament (as the Hebrew Bible was now known); to keep reading Jewish scriptures was to miss the point of Christ’s radical newness. On the other hand, Justin Martyr, Marcion’s orthodox opponent, believed that this reduction of the Old Testament to its merely literal content was itself a way of repeating a “Jewish” error. In other words, both Marcion and Justin each accused the other of Judaizing, of reading and thinking like a Jew. This, too, would become a pattern for subsequent Christian (and post-Christian) history: If Judaism was an error, every error could potentially be thought of as Jewish. “This struggle to control the power of ‘Judaism,’ ” Nirenberg writes, “will turn out to be one of the most persistent and explosive themes of Christian political theology, from the Middle Ages to Modernity.”

    ReplyDelete
  98. pbird1:28 PM

The common thread in Anti-Judaism is that such accusations of Jewishness have little to do with actual Jews. They are a product of a Gentile discourse, in which Christians argue with other Christians by accusing them of Judaism. The same principle holds true in Nirenberg’s fascinating later chapters. When Martin Luther rebelled against Catholicism, he attacked the church’s “legalistic understanding of God’s justice” as Jewish: “In this sense the Roman church had become more ‘Jewish’ than the Jews.” When the Puritan revolutionaries in the English Civil War thought about the ideal constitution for the state, they looked to the ancient Israelite commonwealth as described in Judges and Kings.

    ReplyDelete
  104. pbird1:40 PM

The biggest reason recycling hurts the environment doesn’t have anything to do with the technical process—it’s the mindset it gives people. The idea is that by putting materials in the recycle bin, by buying products made from recycled material, we’re saving the environment—we’re all a team of individual Captain Planets, kicking pollution to the curb. But how effective is that when the US alone still produces 250 million tons of trash every year?

Recycling’s main impact is to convince us that it’s okay to be wasteful in other areas, because we make up for it through recycling. It encourages consumption, rather than pointing out ways to reduce consumption overall.

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch today released previously unseen USDA videos revealing a compulsory “Cultural Sensitivity Training” program. A whistleblower reported to Judicial Watch that employees were required to bang on tables, chanting in unison “The pilgrims were illegal aliens” while being instructed to no longer use the word “minorities,” but to replace it with “emerging majorities.” Judicial Watch received the videos pursuant to a May 18, 2012, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

Oy. Such an eventful week. Blech.

Cocoa is healing nicely, B”H, although she still has some pain to manage.

Last night, because there hadn’t been enough canine drama around here, Maggie May decided to get on the kitchen table and eat Grandpa’s insulin pen. It took both of us to hold her still long enough to draw blood from her ear flap so we could check her blood sugar. We just had to give her a glucose tablet to eat; she’s fine today. Scared the shiite out of me for a few minutes though.

Today Grandpa has the nasty cold I dealt with last week. When I couldn’t get out of bed for 18 hours he called me a lazy ass and refused to even feed the dogs. When it’s his turn it makes perfect sense and I need to cater to his every whim. Oy. Men.
