  8. He has killed Pakistani kids — and Afghani kids and Yemeni kids and even one American kid — because he is living up to his sworn obligation to protect American kids, even if kids from other parts of the world have to die in the process. He is absolved by intention, even if his intention ends inevitably in accidents and the accidents end up inevitably in line with
the President’s own idea of evil.

  70. Algeria's response to the crisis was typical of the country's history in confronting terrorists - military action over negotiation - and caused an international outcry from countries worried about their citizens. Algerian military forces twice assaulted the areas where the hostages were being held with minimal apparent negotiation - first on Thursday and then on Saturday.

one of my greatest fears when I saw all of this shit going down is that people with very little knowledge and experience were going to run up the cost across the board and start injuring others.

I've handled firearms pretty much my entire life. My dad reminded me of when I scratched the stock of this beautiful Berretta shotgun my grandfather had "made" for him when I mentioned getting the lad a skeet gun today. Off the shelf those are going for around an easy $2,000 now. I shudder to even consider what Pop paid for that thing. It must have been a small fortune.

from my vantage point we're entering a dark age and everyone is going to suffer. I'm a couple phone calls away from evacuating my family. I probably am only over reacting, but I've got eye's that see and ear's that can hear pretty well. Dear GOD I pray that I'm wrong! And I will continue to pray that.

  129. Stakes for France Are High as Hollande Continues an Intervention in Mali

PARIS — This was not the war President François Hollande wanted.

In just two hours last Thursday, after a plea for help from Mali’s interim president, Dioncounda Traoré, Mr. Hollande decided to send in French warplanes and ground troops.

It was supposed to be a quick and dramatic blow that would send the Islamists scurrying back to their hide-outs in northern Mali, buying time for the deployment of an African force to stabilize the situation. Instead it is turning into what looks like a complex and drawn-out military and diplomatic operation that Mr. Hollande’s critics are already calling a desert version of a quagmire, like Vietnam or Afghanistan.

Some here speak of Mr. Hollande’s “Sahelistan.” Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, the former French president, reminded Mr. Hollande of “the danger of a military operation without a clear enemy, with the risk to civilians that is bound to engender hostility among the citizens.” He warned of “neocolonialism.”

  130. First State Salvo on Gun Control Fired in N.Y.

Public Input Prevented as Cuomo Seizes Gun Rights in Overnight Session, with Secret Deals, Procedural Shortcuts and Midnight Votes

Anti-gun New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D), in stunningly brazen fashion, took a hatchet to gun rights in New York this week. By cutting secret deals behind closed doors, eliminating public input and circumventing normal legislative processes, the governor and state senate passed sweeping anti-gun measures just before the stroke of midnight on Monday. Within 24 hours, Cuomo had his new gun control laws. Cuomo employed a rarely-used executive trick, a "message of necessity," to bypass normal legislative procedures that are strictly followed on hundreds of bills each legislative session.

Late Monday, as the clock approached midnight, the public was introduced to S. 2230, a hastily drafted bill that includes bans on commonly owned semi-automatic firearms and magazines, gun registration, and restrictions on ammunition purchases. This bill was released to legislators a scant 20 minutes prior to the Senate vote and quickly passed without proper vetting or debate.

    S. 2230 faced the state Assembly on Tuesday, where it passed by a 104 to 43 vote and was signed into law by the Governor within an hour of its passage. During Assembly debate, it became obvious that the haste with which the bill was drafted and passed resulted in innumerable errors and flaws, damaging gun owners even worse than bill authors probably intended. The NRA-ILA lobbyist spent several days in Albany meeting with lawmakers, but this deal was quickly and quietly being forged behind closed doors. Lawmakers from both political parties were critical of Cuomo's abuse of the legislative process.

S.2230 expands the state's existing "assault weapons" ban by outlawing lawfully-possessed pre-ban firearms, unless they are registered. This new state law also expands what is now considered an "assault weapon" and goes beyond the expired federal law. This statute also lowers New York's magazine capacity limit from 10 rounds to seven. State residents have one year from enactment to transfer or surrender them. Incredibly, S.2230 will also require background checks on ammunition purchases and prohibit online sales of ammunition. It also includes universal background checks on all firearm transfers with certain, very limited exemptions for immediate family. S.2230 also requires medical practitioners to report if someone is a threat to himself or others (without requiring an adjudication), requiring such persons to surrender his or her guns.

  139. The Facts About Assault Weapons and Crime
    By JOHN R. LOTT JR.

Warning about "weapons designed for the theater of war," President Obama on Wednesday called for immediate action on a new Federal Assault Weapons Ban. He said that "more of our fellow Americans might still be alive" if the original assault weapons ban, passed in 1994, had not expired in 2004. Last month, in the wake of the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) promised to introduce an updated version of the ban. She too warned of the threat posed by "military weapons."

After the nightmare of Newtown, their concern is understandable. Yet despite being at the center of the gun-control debate for decades, neither President Obama nor Ms. Feinstein (the author of the 1994 legislation) seems to understand the leading research on the effects of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban. In addition, they continue to mislabel the weapons they seek to ban.

Ms. Feinstein points to two studies by criminology professors Chris Koper and Jeff Roth for the National Institute of Justice to back up her contention that the ban reduced crime. She claims that their first study in 1997 showed that the ban decreased "total gun murders." In fact, the authors wrote: "the evidence is not strong enough for us to conclude that there was any meaningful effect (i.e., that the effect was different from zero)."

Messrs. Koper and Roth suggested that after the ban had been in effect for more years it might be possible to find a benefit. Seven years later, in 2004, they published a follow-up study for the National Institute of Justice with fellow criminologist Dan Woods that concluded, "we cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation's recent drop in gun violence. And, indeed, there has been no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence."

Moreover, none of the weapons banned under the 1994 legislation or the updated version are "military" weapons. The killer in Newtown used a Bushmaster .223. This weapon bears a cosmetic resemblance to the M-16, which has been used by the U.S. military since the Vietnam War. The call has frequently been made that there is "no reason" for such "military-style weapons" to be available to civilians.

But under a new law in New York, one of the strongest to be passed to
date, therapists may feel compelled to report every instance of violent
talk, lest they face legal consequences if something happens. And some
say ordinary patients may wind up suffering the most.

New York’s expanded gun law signed by Cuomo on January 15 goes further than most state laws in that it requires mental health professionals to
report any person considered “likely to engage in conduct that would result in serious harm to self or others” to local health officials. Those officials would be authorized to report that person to law
enforcement, which could seize the person’s firearms.

jihadists in the region, no doubt emboldened by the lack of U.S. response to the attacks, have taken to taunting the American investigators and celebrating U.S. feebleness. Washington has very little to show for its investigation of the Ben-ghazi attacks. One leading suspect is in custody—Egyptian custody—and we’re being denied access to him. Another sipped a strawberry frappe in the lobby of a luxury hotel in Benghazi as he told a New York Times reporter that he felt no need to hide from the United States. And when a third suspect was freed from a Tunisian prison earlier this month, the U.S. government was given no warning, but extremists belonging to an al Qaeda-linked group apparently had advance notice.

If there is any urgency to the U.S. government’s efforts to “bring to justice” the terrorists, it’s well hidden. It took the FBI team assigned to investigate Benghazi nearly a month to arrive there. Later, after they had supposedly scoured the U.S. consulate, on two separate occasions reporters found highly sensitive documents on the floor—some including the names of Libyans working with the U.S. government. Robert Mueller, the head of the FBI, visited Libya as part of the investigation for the first time last week.

^ Previous rumours about an Ethiopian royal ancestry could not be confirmed by family documents. A recent publication based on genealogical documents preserved from his grandmother's family has clarified this open question. Peter's grandmother was Magdalena Hall, daughter of Katharina Hall, also known as Welette-Iyesus (wife of Tewodros II' cannon-caster Moritz Hall, a Jewish convert and employee of the Protestant mission in Ethiopia, later Jaffa), a confidante of Empress Taytu in the early 20th century. She was of mixed Ethiopian-German origin, the daughter of the German painter and immigrant to Ethiopia Eduard Zander and the court lady Isette-Werq in Gondar, daughter of an Ethiopian general called Meqado (active before the mid-19th century). See: Wolbert G.C. Smidt: Verbindungen der Familie Ustinov nach Äthiopien, in: Aethiopica, International Journal of Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies 8, 2005, pp. 29–47; for older speculations on Ustinov's Ethiopian ancestry, which have been disproved, see Frontline: Ustinov, which wrongly claimed that Peter Ustinov's alleged ancestor, Susan Bell, was the daughter of Tewodros II. The supposed connection with Susan Bell is based on Ustinov's memory of some family relation with the Swiss missionary Theophilus Waldmeier (husband of Susan Sara Yewubdar Bell), who, however, was a colleague and friend of Ustinov's great-grandfather, not his great-grandfather himself.

Ustinov also served as President of the World Federalist Movement from 1991 until his death. He once said, "World Government is not only possible, it is inevitable; and when it comes, it will appeal to patriotism in its truest, in its only sense, the patriotism of men who
love their national heritages so deeply that they wish to preserve them in safety for the common good.

  169. Signs That The Nazification Of America Is Almost Complete

Next came gun registration. People were getting injured by guns. Hitler said that the real way to catch criminals (we still had a few) was by matching serial numbers on guns. Most citizens were law abiding and dutifully marched to the police station to register their firearms. Not long after-wards, the police said that it was best for everyone to turn in their guns. The authorities already knew who had them, so it was futile not to comply voluntarily.

Last year, more than 10 million guns were sold in the United States, but gun control legislation continues to become even more strict, and it is only a matter of time before the federal government tries to disarm the U.S. population completely.
