  11. Should We Trust in Government?

Whether you are for gun control or the right to bear arms, let’s agree to be honest.

The federal government has recently purchased hundreds of millions of rounds of hollow point ammunition for use within the United States. (And purchases are allegedly ongoing.)

Senators Dianne Feinstein and Harry Reid have carried concealed weapons to protect themselves.

And the newspaper which published the names and addresses of gun owners has itself hired armed guards to protect it.

So folks within government who are advocating gun control are only advocating that the American people be disarmed.

They not only reserve to themselves the right to carry weapons, but the government is buying insane amounts of weaponry for use within the United States. Indeed, police forces throughout the U.S. are being armed with military weapons.

Whatever you think about gun control, please acknowledge the objective situation: our government is becoming more and more armed, while it is asking us to disarm ourselves.

Therefore, whatever you think about gun control, you have to admit that the government is asking us to trust it, as it becomes armed to the teeth and asks us to give up our arms.

Given recent actions by folks in government (and the consolidation of power), do you trust our government?

  17. Civilian disarmament advocates insist that the Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre illustrates the dangers of inadequately restrictive firearms laws. That assumption is impossible to reconcile with the fact that Connecticut’s state government regards individual firearms ownership not as a right but as a highly conditional privilege subject to revocation without notice, on the whim of an unaccountable bureaucrat.

In 1999, the Connecticut legislature enacted Sec. 29-38c, a measure allowing the police to confiscate firearms from anybody believed to pose “a risk of imminent personal injury to himself … or to other individuals.” All that is required is a sworn complaint “by any state’s attorney or assistant state’s attorney or by any two police officers to any judge of the Superior Court.” A warrant will then be issued allowing police to confiscate the firearms and hold them for up to a year.

State police Lieutenant Robert Kiehm explained to the Associated Press that the purpose of the measure is to give police officers the power "to take some proactive steps instead of waiting for something to happen."

"The value of this law is not so much that police will seize your guns," Lawlor insisted when it took effect in October 1999. "It gives police a system to investigate a person who poses a threat. If the police never confiscate a person's guns, they can at least look into the person's behavior and perhaps prevent a tragedy by intervening."

During the first decade following its enactment, Connecticut’s gun seizure law resulted in the confiscation of at least 2,000 firearms from people who were never charged with crimes. Nearly all of the seizures followed reports from concerned relatives – generally spouses -- of the victims. Attorney Rachel Baird, who has represented a dozen Connecticut residents whose firearms have been confiscated, insists that none of them posed any credible threat to anybody, including themselves.

Lawlor, who is now the state’s Under Secretary for Criminal Justice Policy and Planning, invokes a variation on Dick Cheney’s “One Percent Doctrine” (“Even if there’s just a 1 percent chance of the unimaginable coming due, act as if it’s a certainty”) to justify the gun confiscation program. “Maybe it would have been just a suicide or a single murder of a spouse, but potentially one of these guys along the road could have been a mass shooting,”

The standard set out in the Connecticut confiscation law – namely, that guns can be seized from anyone who presents “a risk of imminent personal injury to others” – would justify the pre-emptive disarmament of the police force. After all, the police constitute a body of armed individuals who are trained to employ violence and are rarely held accountable for injuring or killing others without a morally sound reason to do so.

If Lawlor’s defense of the measure – that it is justified by the prevention of “just a suicide or a single murder” – were applied seriously, it would buttress the case for disarming the police in Connecticut. Between April and June of 2011, there were four police suicides in Connecticut, a development that prompted authorities to convene a special statewide conference on suicide prevention.

House Speaker John Boehner, swearing in Rep. Sean Maloney of NY, with Maloney's husband, Randy Florke, and two of their children (AP)

Oh, irony! Buzzfeed noticed that House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) met "two new gay Congressional spouses" at the swearing-in ceremonies of Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wisconsin) and NY's first gay Congressman, Rep. Sean Maloney, who represents the lower Hudson Valley. Maloney's husband Randy Florke and two children were on hand, too! How ironic, since just the day before, Boehner reiterated his anti-gay marriage stance.

    (puke, vomit, barf.....)

Joe Biden on culturalism: “In Delaware, the largest growth of population is Indian Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7/11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.”

John Conyers on the Health Care Bill, which he voted for: “I love these members, they get up and say, ‘Read the bill … What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?’”

John Kerry on the troops: “You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”

Howard Dean: “We know that no one person can succeed unless everybody else succeeds.”

Al Gore: “During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet.”

Joe Biden on the economy: “The number one job facing the middle class, and it happens to be, as Barack says, a three-letter word: jobs. J-O-B-S.”

Joe Biden on History: “When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, ‘Look, here’s what happened.”

Marion Barry, former mayor of Washington, DC: “If you take out the killings, Washington actually has a very very low crime rate.”

Senator Chris Dodd, while on the campaign trail: “Eight more days and I can start telling the truth again” Sen. Chris Dodd, on the campaign trail.

Jerry Brown, governor of California: “The conventional viewpoint says we need a jobs program and we need to cut welfare. Just the opposite! We need more welfare and fewer jobs.”

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on the newly passed health care law: “We actually have not required in this law that you carry health insurance.”

Radio personality Ed Schultz on elections: “If I lived in Massachusetts, I’d try to vote ten times … Yeah that’s right, I’d cheat to keep these bastards out. I would. Because that’s exactly what they are.”

Congresswoman Maxine Waters on socialism: “Guess what this liberal would be all about? This liberal will be about socializing…uh, um…Would be about, basically, taking over, and the government running all of your companies.”

Senator Harry Reid on Barack Obama: “…light-skinned,” and with “no negro dialect.”

So hold my hand, I'll walk with you my dear

It's the house telling you to close your eyes

Some days I can't even dress myself.
It's killing me to see you this way.

'Cause though the truth may vary
this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore.

    Hey! Hey! Hey!

There's an old voice in my head
    that's holding me back
Well tell her that I miss our little talks.

Soon it will all be over, buried with our past
We used to play outside when we were young
and full of life and full of love.

Some days I feel like I'm wrong when I am right.
Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear.

'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

    You're gone, gone, gone away,
    I watched you disappear.
All that's left is a ghost of you.
Now we're torn, torn, torn apart,
    there's nothing we can do,
Just let me go, we'll meet again soon.

Now wait, wait, wait for me, please hang around
I'll see you when I fall asleep.

    Hey!
    Don't listen to a word I say
    Hey!
The screams all sound the same.

    From the Comments:

I wonder if obama is involved. Didnt BOFA recieved some sort of bailout? if they did this could be there way of paying back obama.

Only US$45B, US$25B from TARP in 2008 and an additional US$20B in 2009 (right after Barry was enaugurated) in emergency funds after taking over Merrill Lynch, with US$118B of government guarantees against bad assets. The additional bailout came with the US Treasury taking a stake in the bank.

The US$45B in bailouts and US$118B in guarantees puts BofA as one of the most bailed-out financial institution of the fiscal crisis. WaMu (Washington Mutual) probably would have been larger if the government had decided to bail them out instead of screwing the investors, but then WaMu wasn’t on record of contributing to the 2008 Obama campaign as BofA is.

  70. U.S. gives unstable Lebanon 200 armored vehicles

Reuters) - The United States has given 200 armored vehicles to Lebanon, the Lebanese army said on Monday, bolstering forces that have been struggling to deal with sectarian violence inflamed by the war across the border in Syria.

The M113 armored personnel carriers (APCs) arrived by ship to Beirut on Sunday, the army said in a statement. A Lebanese security source said the army now had 1,200 APCs.

A U.S. diplomat said the shipment of vehicles would support the Lebanese armed forces' "capabilities and their mobility and ability to respond to crises. It is also to protect borders and internal stability".

The diplomat, who preferred not to be named, said the vehicles were used but were all in "very good working order and will be refurbished here in Lebanon".

The United States has provided more than $140 million in equipment and assistance to the Lebanese armed forces in the past six months, including six Huey 2 helicopters, a 42-metre coastal security craft, more than 1,000 guns - including grenade launchers -- and 38 million rounds of ammunition.

The criticism crystallized over an interview for a 2008 book in which

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) — who doesn't get a vote on the Hagel nomination – issued a statement after he was nominated Monday calling him "the wrong man for the job at such a pivotal time."

He also criticized Hagel for having "incendiary" views on Israel.

Pro-Israel groups are vowing to continue a lobbying campaign that began when Hagel was first named as the favorite to succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta at the Pentagon.

It’s no secret that Congress isn’t popular, with approval ratings typically below 20% among Americans.

Now, one pollster has taken Americans’ general dislike of Congress to its logical polling conclusion, stacking Congress up against some of the worst things (or at least most controversial things) one can image.

In a poll released Tuesday, Public Policy Polling found that Americans have a higher opinion of traffic jams (56%-34%), colonoscopies (58%-31%) and cockroaches (45%-43%) than Congress. Ditto for love-‘em or hate-‘em band Nickelback (39%-32%), used-car salesmen (57%-32%), root canals (56%-32%) and NFL replacement refs (56%-29%).

Who does Congress beat out? Well, it squeaks by actress Lindsay Lohan (45%-41%) and playground bullies (43%-38%), and has more comfortable margins over Cuba’s Fidel Castro (54%-32%) and the reality-television Kardashians (49%-36%). And Congress trounced communism (57%-23%).

PPP surveyed 830 voters from Jan. 3 to Jan. 6 via automated telephone interviews. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

The bills would also institute a 50 percent sales tax on the sale of ammunition and magazines, prohibit the purchase of ammunition over the Internet and limit the sale of ammunition to those with Connecticut firearms permits.

"I just feel a personal mandate," said Bye. "These parents have just lost their child and already they're advocating for something to happen. President of the National Assocation of Police Officers and Boston Police Officer Thomas Nee is a member of Vice President Joe Biden's gun control task force, which was created by President Obama in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Nee's son, Joseph Nee, was convicted in 2008 for planning to commit mass murder of students and teachers at Marshfield High School in Massachusetts, similar to that of Columbine in 1999. After spending nine months in prison, Nee's conviction was upheld by the Supreme Judicial Court.

Nee told police the plan involved taking ammunition and explosive devices into the school, securing the school's exit doors with bicycle locks, and shooting students and staff.

Seattle and King County are launching a new Gun Safety Initiative that includes a gun buyback program in hopes of reducing the number of firearms in the community.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, King County Executive Dow Constantine and other law enforcement, health and community leaders announced the the new initiative Tuesday morning in Seattle.

McGinn says the program is modeled after other programs across the country. People will be allowed to anonymously turn in their unwanted weapons in exchange for a gift card valued at up to $100.00 for hand guns, shot guns and rifles. Assault weapons will be worth up to a $200.00 gift card. Officials say law enforcement officials will not take pictures of participants, track their license plates or run ballistic tests on the guns turned in.
