    the hoover picture is priceless.

I got Paula Deen cookware last year for Christmas. I may use the crepe pan this morning.

As the ugliest, male wife on my street, and since no one is around to complain about it, I think that's what I'll do.

  23. More Russian marines and tanks sail for Syria’s Tartus

Russian defense minister Anatoly Antonov denied Monday the presence in Syria of Russian commandos plus officers and soldiers operating Syrian anti-air defenses (as The Guardian disclosed). At the same time, the Russian Navy spokesman stated that two large landing craft – the Azov and the Nikolai Filchenkov – had departed Black See Fleet HQ at Novorossiysk for Tartus.

Each vessel carries 300-500 Russian marines with landing tanks and amphibious APCs. In addition, landing craft from the Russian Baltic Fleet with several hundred marines aboard were due to dock any time now in Tartus. Moscow has offered no official explanation for this naval buildup in Syria.

The Caliphate State may have been an impossible dream. However, recently the dream to establish a Muslim spiritual community led by supreme religious leaders has spread through countries across the Arab region like that of Egypt. This episode goes behind making of a Caliphate State. What influences the people? Who is behind the posting of posters
on houses and bridges’ walls? Are they some religious groups or others who want to give the impression that the Islamists are behind these campaigns? Are the regional or international conditions favoring the “Caliphate State” or will it always remain as a dream? The Special Mission team investigate the phenomenon.

STEVENS PASS, Wash. (AP) - State transportation officials say U.S. Highway 2 could remain closed between Leavenworth and Stevens Pass until a significant weather change.

The 35-mile stretch of highway has been closed since Saturday evening, after trees crashed down on two cars and killed two people.

The highway is one of two primary east-west routes through the mountains usually open during the winter.

  76. Let Santa (And Dr.Wheat) Smoke His Pipe

    By Katrina Trinko

A new version of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas removes these two lines: “The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth/and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath,” in order that children not be encouraged to smoke. But in my USA Today column, I look at how this kind of editing could prevent children from learning important lessons about morality:

However, what McColl’s revisions will cause is a dumbing down of children’s moral intelligence. The point of stories — even children’s stories, which appropriately tend to be simpler and less complex than young adult and adult fiction — isn’t to present completely sanitized scenarios, where everyone is either completely good or entirely evil.

If that was the case, beloved childhood characters as diverse as Harry Potter (who sometimes uses an invisibility cloak when breaking rules) to Madeline (the little French heroine who recklessly walks — and falls off — a high bridge ledge) should also face censorship.

Delta is a mashup of all the various military services, ST6 is a mashup of the SeAL teams. Creating task forces has been around a long time and I was around back in the day when Delta was being assembled. Because of the cluster fuck between the services during Desert One (Iran), someone finally pulled their head out of their ass to assemble the joint task force. Is it perfect? Hell no, but it's a hell of a lot better than it had been. Delta was conceived and born in Fayette-nam of course. ST6 was assembled shortly after we had boots on the ground in the A-hole.

Bottom line is that each one of these "teams" are life takers and heart-breakers, they move and strike quickly, and there's nothing on GOD's green earth that scares them,...except dumb assed politicians.

  116. Christmas, New Year is pagan and capitalist, says Turkey's top cleric

Christmas and New Year celebrations are events where both pagan rituals and capitalist drives are intertwined, the head of Turkey's Religious Affairs Directorate Mehmet Görmez said in a statement released Dec.26.

Görmez warned people against what he called the “cultural and identity erosion” that the “Christmas economy” can inspire in children through movies, marketing and products.

“What I will most object to as the religious affairs head is the Christmas consumer economy that causes cultural and identity-related erosion in children,” Görmez said. “Universities, scientists, teachers and intellectuals should think about this.”

    Drinking and gambling frowned on

Drinking and gambling is “impossible to approve of,” he said.

Christmas and New Year’s should be separated and not seen as “a form of revenge on the time phenomenon,” according to Görmez's statement.

“I see mass parties and celebrations similar to a form of revenge people take on the time phenomenon,” Görmez said. “Especially [celebrating] with drinking, gambling and lotteries… it is impossible to approve of such things.”

“One wishes that such time would be cause for people to evaluate what happened in the past year, and to thank God for the coming one,” Görmez said.

To hear Charles Krauthammer refer to Erdogan as a "moderate Islamist" is indicative of the extent of the warping not only of our political discourse, but of language itself.

  123. Obama sending troops, drones into as many as 35 African nations in 2013

War is a racket. via Army teams going to Africa as terror threat grows – Yahoo! News.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Army brigade will begin sending small teams into as many as 35 African nations early next year, part of an intensifying Pentagon effort to train countries to battle extremists and give the U.S. a ready and trained force to dispatch to Africa if crises requiring the U.S. military emerge.

The teams will be limited to training and equipping efforts, and will not be permitted to conduct military operations without specific, additional approvals from the secretary of defense.

The sharper focus on Africa by the U.S. comes against a backdrop of widespread insurgent violence across North Africa, and as the African Union and other nations discuss military intervention in northern Mali.

The terror threat from al-Qaida linked groups in Africa has been growing steadily, particularly with the rise of the extremist Islamist sect Boko Haram in Nigeria. Officials also believe that the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, which killed the ambassador and three other Americans, may have been carried out by those who had ties to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb.

This first-of-its-kind brigade assignment — involving teams from the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division — will target countries such as Libya, Sudan, Algeria and Niger, where al-Qaida-linked groups have been active. It also will assist nations like Kenya and Uganda that have been battling al-Shabab militants on the front lines in Somalia.

The mission for the 2nd Brigade — known as the “Dagger Brigade” — will begin in the spring and will pave the way for Army brigades to be assigned next to U.S. Pacific Command and then to U.S. European Command over the next year. The brigade is receiving its regular combat training first, and then will move on to the more specific instruction needed for the deployments, such as language skills, cultural information and other data about the African nations.

Gen. Carter Ham, the top U.S. commander in Africa, noted that the brigade has a small drone capability that could be useful in Africa. But he also acknowledged that he would need special permission to tap it for that kind of mission.

“If they want them for (military) operations, the brigade is our first sourcing solution because they’re prepared,” said Gen. David Rodriguez, the head of U.S. Army Forces Command. “But that has to go back to the secretary of defense to get an execute order.”

Is an EO all it takes for a drone to vaporize Americans on U.S. soil?

The supposed anti-war left is silent as are conservatives on the right who claim to adhere to the Constitution.

  138. “It had darkened since I left, and now I could only see here and there the glistening of moisture upon the black walls, and far away down at the end of the shaft the gleam of the broken water. I shouted; but only the same half-human cry of the fall was borne back to my ears.”

    -Doctor Watson

Still the slosh of new money is there. The compression in the bond markets will continue for a time. America will join Europe in her recession and the Continent will be buoyed by the sharing of the misery. It will certainly not be the best of times and most probably not the worst of times but it will be a time that is not marked by much joy or good fortune either. I predict that anger will swell, that people will feel betrayed and that the social conscience of the nation will be frayed by what has been promised and cannot be delivered. The spirit of the season may well call; “Rest Ye Merry Gentleman” but it will neither be “rest” nor “merry” as the New Year begins.

Piers Morgan has worn out his welcome in the United States fairly quickly, but he had quite a long time to wear out in the UK and no one there wants him coming back.

@jeremyclarkson unless they sent him back in an orange jumpsuit and leg irons. I’d be at heathrow to see that. — LessGrumpyNow (@LessGrumpyNow) December 24, 2012

Dick Armey Leads Armed Coup of Tea Party Group, Gets Bought Off With $8 Million

    http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2012/12/dick-armey-leads-armed-coup-tea-party-group-gets-bought-8-million

The day after Labor Day, just as campaign season was entering its final frenzy, FreedomWorks, the Washington-based tea party organization, went into free fall. Richard K. Armey, the group’s chairman and a former House majority leader, walked into the group’s Capitol Hill offices with his wife, Susan, and an aide holstering a handgun at his waist. The aim was to seize control of the group and expel Armey’s enemies: The gun-wielding assistant escorted FreedomWorks’ top two employees off the premises, while Armey suspended several others who broke down in sobs at the news.

....Until this year, the partnership between Kibbe and Armey worked well....The partnership came to a crashing end when Armey marched into FreedomWorks’s office Sept. 4 with his wife, Susan, executive assistant Jean Campbell and the unidentified man with the gun at his waist — who promptly escorted Kibbe and Brandon out of the building.

....By nearly all accounts, including from those loyal to him, Armey handled his attempted coup badly. Armey says he was stepping in because of ethical breaches by Kibbe and Brandon, accusing them of improperly using FreedomWorks staff resources to produce a book — ironically, named “Hostile Takeover” — for which Kibbe claimed sole credit and was collecting royalties. The use of internal resources for Kibbe’s benefit could jeopardize the group’s nonprofit tax status; the group denies ay impropriety.

    http://www.jta.org/news/article/2012/12/26/3115441/hamas-forbids-local-journalists-from-working-with-israeli-media

The Hamas government in Gaza has forbidden local journalists from working with Israeli media outlets.

The weekly Cabinet meeting in Gaza decided to ban Palestinian journalists from working "with all Zionist media and journalists,” which it declared "hostile," it announced in a statement, the French news agency AFP reported.

The Cabinet has forbidden the local journalists from working for Israeli media and television stations.

It is the first time the Hamas government has required such action, according to AFP.

There is no similar requirement in the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.

Hamas has ruled Gaza since 2006.

In a Facebook post, The New York Times' Jerusalem bureau chief, Jodi Rudoren, reported that Gaza journalist Abeer Ayyoub confirmed the ban and said that Hamas also announced that permits for foreign journalists would now go through the internal security office.

Rudoren wrote that Israeli media outlets rely on local Palestinians for news from the coastal strip, since Israelis are forbidden from entering Gaza.

Zweig-Devira noted that the seemingly worthless pile of dirt may have significant archaeological findings. Similar piles in the past have included, among other things, signatures of Cohanim (priests) mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah, remains of the Holy Temple plaza, and additional findings from various time periods.

He noted that he and other archaeologists locate dozens of ancient artifacts every day in the pile in question.

According to Zweig-Devira, the Waqf is also failing to protect beams from the period of the First Temple, leaving them exposed to the rains and not placing plastic on them to protect them from bad weather.

He noted that Waqf officials moved the aforementioned pile of artifacts on Sunday when there were no visitors to the Temple Mount, and there was no monitoring by IAA officials.

The attack on a Hindu temple in Dudley’s King Street was carried out by EDL supporters who claim only to oppose “Muslim extremists” and deny being “racist”. Eye witnesses say that around 50 or 60 EDL rioters broke down the fencing outside the Hindu temple while throwing bricks and stones at the building, smashing three windows. They also broke all the handrails outside the temple and used them to attack the building. All of this happening while members of the public sheltered inside.
