USA/Raytheon Arming the Turks
The Pentagon has notified Congress it plans to sell Turkey the most advanced version of its Patriot air-defense missile in an arms package worth as much as $7.8 billion, according to a press release.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the deal for nearly 290 Patriot missiles includes 72 PAC-3 models along with communications gear needed to establish an integrated air- defense system for more than a dozen command posts, according to the release dated Sept. 9 and posted to its Web site yesterday.

Congress has 30 days to veto the agreement before it’s considered approved. Lockheed Martin Corp., based in Bethesda, Maryland, and Waltham, Massachusetts-based Raytheon Co. would then enter into talks for a potential contract with Turkey.

“Turkey will use the PAC-3 missiles to improve its missile defense capability, strengthen its homeland defense, and deter regional threats,” the agency said in the statement.

Turkey has not previously acquired PAC-3 missiles, “but will be able to absorb and effectively utilize these missiles,” it said.

Al-Qaida-linked group claims Katyusha attack

"Your brothers fired two Katyusha rockets from south Lebanon which landed in the Nahariya settlement in the north of occupied Palestine," read a statement on terrorist Web sites quoted by Reuters. The statement cited Israel's Gaza blockade and the restrictions on Muslims wishing to pray at the Temple Mount's Aksa Mosque. The statement was signed by the Ziad al-Jarrah division of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, and the statement's headline linked the organization to al-Qaida, said Reuters.

Israeli Compelled to Fire in Self Defense in Jerusalem
An Israeli male was taken into custody shortly before shabbos after he fired at Arab attackers in the Givati parking lot area near the Kosel. The intended victim explained he and a friend were under serious threat by a large group of Arabs, compelling him to fire in the air. After the warning shots did not distance the crowd, he fired at their legs, in accordance to protocol, injuring a 13-year-old and a 40-year-old. The Arabs told police they were attacked without provocation by the soldier. The male remains under house arrest but he was released from custody after police realized his version of the events that took place was indeed credible. His story appears to have been confirmed by security camera tapes viewed by police. Following the shooting incident, the Arab residents of Ir David began throwing rocks at Jewish homes and security forces.

Burma: A battleground for India and China
The coastline of Burma provides naval access in the proximity of one of the world's most strategic water passages, the Strait of Malacca, the narrow ship passage between Malaysia and Indonesia. The Strait of Malacca, linking the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is the shortest sea route between the Persian Gulf and China. It is the key chokepoint in Asia. More than 80% of all China's oil imports are shipped by tankers passing the Malacca Strait.

The narrowest point is the Phillips Channel in the Singapore Strait, only 1.5 miles wide at its narrowest. Daily more than 12 million barrels in oil supertankers pass through this narrow passage, most en route to the world's fastest-growing energy market, China or to Japan. If the strait were closed, nearly half of the world's tanker fleet would be required to sail further. Closure would immediately raise freight rates worldwide. More than 50,000 vessels per year transit the Strait of Malacca. The region from Burma to Banda Ache in Indonesia is fast becoming one of the world's most strategic chokepoints.

A group of Russian skinheads have been detained for throwing Molotov cocktails at a synagogue in the country's far eastern city of Khabarovsk, officials said Monday. Nobody was injured in the attack overnight Saturday to Sunday, which was timed to take place ahead of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year holiday due to begin this Friday, the far eastern branch of Russia's interior ministry said. "The nationalists acted in two groups: one threw bottles filled with a flammable mix at the windows of the synagogue; the other one, at a police officer's home," the ministry said in a statement. "At the synagogue the young people chose as their target a room epecially equipped for the education of small children." The four skinheads, aged 15 to 23, face arson charges that carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison, the statement said.

Russia Rachets Up Rhetoric
KIEV, Ukraine -- Five years after Ukraine defied Russia and turned toward the United States and Europe in a peaceful, democratic revolution, Moscow is poised for a comeback in this former Soviet republic. The pro-Western president who came to power as the hero of the Orange Revolution is struggling with single-digit ratings just months before he stands for reelection.

The man Russia backed in 2004 is leading the race to succeed him. And the next-strongest candidate also appears acceptable to the Kremlin. But rather than sit out the election, Russia has redoubled its efforts to portray Ukraine as a hostile neighbor, lodging a barrage of complaints against its policies and plunging relations between the two countries to their lowest point since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The vilification campaign has puzzled and alarmed analysts here as well as in Washington and Moscow. Many say Russia is trying to tilt the electoral field even further in its favor. But because that seems unnecessary, some are also asking whether Russian leaders might be laying the groundwork for a more serious confrontation with Ukraine, just a year after a brief war with another pro-Western neighbor, Georgia.
Saudis lose out to Russia in oil cuts
HAHAHAHA! SAY MY NAME!
~ Vladdest in Whole Glow Ball, tovarich!
Saudi Arabia sacrificed billions of dollars in revenues this year by cutting oil output to prop up the price of crude, only to see Russia snatch a bigger chunk of the market, analysts say.Now the Gulf kingdom, previously a vigilant enforcer of the cuts by the OPEC cartel that checked the sharp fall in oil prices last year, appears to be expanding its own oil flow again in exasperation."The cartel has lost a significant portion of market share in global crude production in the last year mostly to Russia," wrote Francisco Blanch, a commodities analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, in a note.

Wall Street Goes to Washington
NO! Unheard of, absurd!

City to 'unsafe' Sachs: Pay for protection
Goldman Sachs, the wealthiest bank on Wall Street, is locked in a bitter battle with city and state officials over the number of cops available to patrol its gleaming new world headquarters at Ground Zero. The bank is close to completing its $2.4 billion, 43-story skyscraper on Vesey Street in Battery Park City and says it will be ready to move in by the end of this year. But the big move could be delayed as the city and state scale back an expensive security agreement with the bank. The squabble is dealing yet another blow to the redevelopment of Ground Zero -- and possibly putting taxpayers on the hook for $320 million if the Goldman-government accord collapses.

Ad campaign in Bay Area answers questions about Islam
Why Islam, indeed. Da'wa your ignorant kuffar asses!
It's certainly not unusual to spot billboards in Silicon Valley urging you to step into Fry's Electronics, shop at the Great Mall or buy a new Halloween costume. But for the first time, billboards asking "Why Islam?" have sprouted up in San Jose, Santa Clara and Concord, along with a blitz of posters on buses and bus stops — a campaign to educate people about the religion and fight negative stereotypes.

The ads offer free Korans and a toll-free number people can call to seek answers about the oft-misunderstood religion. "The best-case scenario of this campaign would be to show the public that Muslims are hardworking, peace-loving family contributors," said Ahmed Khaleel, 30, of Santa Clara, the outreach coordinator for the Bay Area Chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America, which is sponsoring the "Why Islam" project. "Since Sept. 11, Islam has stood at the focus of negativism. Islam is not synonymous with terrorism."

Bush-Era Official's Appointment to Declassification Panel Draws Fire
The Obamanable Bushman cometh!

The newest member of a panel that advises the president on declassification policy is a former top intelligence official who oversaw some of the Bush administration's most controversial counterterrorism programs.

Michael V. Hayden, a retired four-star Air Force general, was appointed to the Public Interest Declassification Board by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) during the August recess.

"The country is fortunate that Gen. Michael Hayden has agreed to serve as a member," McConnell said in an e-mail. "His long history of service as an intelligence professional makes him ideally suited for balancing the interests of secrecy and disclosure in protecting our national security."

Obama's Security State: Keeping Tabs, Keeping Secret
During his 2008 run for the presidency, Senator Barack Obama promised to reverse the Bush regime's pathological penchant for secrecy and the illegal programs that flourished in darkness like so many poisonous mushrooms.

Administration backpedaling on promises to end the more onerous features of the Bush years betray, not so much Obama's duplicity but rather, the naïve and misplaced hope by his supporters that acentrist Democrat beholden to the corporate pirates and militarists who rule the roost, would actually do things any differently.

In areas of critical importance to civil libertarians, the Democratic regime continues to beef up Bushist programs and heighten government secrecy while limiting public accountability, particularly where the intelligence and security apparatus is concerned.

How else explain Obama's plan, buried within the 2010 budget, to provide the Department of Homeland Security an additional $260 million to hire thousands more state and regional intelligence analysts to staff already bloated and controversial fusion centers?
