Here is a passage which noted Spleeniac & Unhinged Lunatic STRULZ has translated from the Romanian translation of a work by Greek author Nikolaos Matsoukas - Dogmatic and Symbolic Theology, vol. 4, Treatise of Demonology, one of those books which seem to get translated in STRULZ's part of the world, but not in our part of the world:

"Satan becomes visible or even existent in real wise not as a person with his own powers, who can direct mankind and history, but rather in inter-human relations and in every kind of satanomorphic social manifestations. In other words, satans and devils are as a rule humans as satanomorphic beings. (...) Thus, since they exist outside divine energies and the glory of God, devils cannot be omnipresent, nor can they create anything from non-being.

Temptation acts upon good thoughts, it darkens the mind of man and creates idolatrous phantasms. In his biography of St Anthony the Great, St Athanasius speaks in many places about the imaginings of those tempted. These imaginings determine those tempted to believe that they are battling monstrous creatures. It is a case of a physiology of reason and of the mind, and at the same time of a pathology.

The descriptions are gripping and realistic. After twenty years of asceticism and fierce battles, St Anthony, in contrast to those overcome by temptations, is given the shelter and sustenance of reason. The true ascetic - and each individual Christian - does not take fright when confronted with idolatrous imaginings, with the shifting guises and mimicry of devils, because all these are the nothingness into which the devil wishes to lead creation. The one who has strength from God, however, wards off and scatters these satanic imaginings.

Consequently, even if those who are demonised are many, this does not mean that devils dwell within them, nor that devils lead them hither and thither! The truth is described very convincingly in Dostoevsky's masterpiece "The Devils". Verkhovensky, Kirillov, Shigalyov, Stavrogin and the others are demonised not because demons dwell
l within them, nor because of their thoughts, but because of their destructive deeds to the detriment of their own existence and that of their fellow man.

The expressive dynamism of the story convinces the reader of Stavrogin's demonism precisely when, without motive, he violently grasps Gaganov's nose and drags him back and forth or when without reason he bites Ivan Osipovich's ear!

One thinks of the real example of Eugen Turcanu, the head of the torturers at Pitesti, a man who was described by those prisoners who survived as wholly satanised".
