While image hunting today I came across these two photos which so moved me I was compelled to find out where they were from.
Meet "The Christ of the Trenches" from The Battle of Neuve Chapelle,
March 10 through 13, 1915 (WWI) ~
The British decided to attack Neuve Chapelle in March of 1915 to prevent the movement of German troops to the east.
Apparently when the church was blown up, the Christ was left standing. When he finally fell, the men carried him into the trenches with them.
The Germans were surprised, outnumbered, outflanked on both sides, and, after a stubborn struggle, they were ousted from the position.
Later the Portuguese soldiers took Trench Christ into their positions with them. The figure is now in Portugal commemorating Portugal's Unknown Soldier.
