What is that Odin's cross doing on his shelf at the end of the video, I asked myself? I know when I see it that is only used by two groups of people, Neo-Pagans and White Power groups. This is not an old clip, this is very recent.

Filip DeWinter was born in Flanders on 11 September 1962 as Philip DeWinter.

To appear "more Flemish" he later changes the spelling of his first name to Filip.

The former president of the Flemish Socialists, Franck Vandenbroucke, will say of him:
"DeWinter is an authentic Nazi" and Louis Tobbak, former minister SP of the Interior, will add: DeWinter is "a psychopath" (quotations extracted the book "Vlaams Blok" by Hugo Gijsels, 1994)

At the end of the seventies DeWinter joins the Jongerenfront or young people front, the Flemish version of the Front de la Jeunesse .

Jongerenfront is at that time in Flanders allied with the Face of Youth (FJ), a group of neo fascist students related to the CEPIC .

Dialogue among religions would bring out common denominations among different beliefs of the world’s peoples and would explain their foundations to the other parties, thereby making it easier for the adherents of such beliefs to understand one another and coexist together.



The desired inter-religious dialogue constitutes the best means to confront the manifestations of animosity and the attempts to distort the image of Islam and Muslims, whether those living in their home countries or those who have migrated to non-Muslim countries. It is necessary to have a deeper understanding of Islam and the Muslims, away form blind bigotism, which leads to unfair generalization about, and the stereotyping of, more than a billion Muslims. From that narrow view, bigotism goes on to animosity towards Islam and the Muslims on the basis of actions committed by a minority, which if far removed from Muslims and the magnanimous precepts of Islam.

Official: Russian fuel ready for Iran

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Enriched uranium fuel is ready to be shipped from Russia to Iran's first nuclear power plant, state television on Sunday quoted Iran's foreign minister as saying.

The announcement comes after talks in Moscow between minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Russian nuclear chief Sergei Kiriyenko to address delays in completing the $1 billion joint Iranian-Russian Bushehr power plant.

"Nuclear fuel for this power plant, inspected and sealed by the International Atomic Energy Agency, is ready,'' the broadcast quoted Mottaki as saying late on Saturday. "We do see the trend of cooperation between Iran and Russia moving ahead for the Bushehr power plant.''

The project, Iran's first nuclear power plant, has been beset by repeated delays due to payment problems on the Iranian side, according to the Russians. Tehran, however, maintains it is because Moscow has been caving into Western pressure to halt the project.

The U.S. maintains that Iran's nuclear power program is a cover for developing weapons and has called for further sanctions, while Tehran denies the charges and insists it just wants to master the technology to meet future power needs under the provisions of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

While Russia has continued to oppose a U.S. push for tougher sanctions against Tehran, Russian officials have shown growing irritation with Iran's refusal to freeze its own uranium enrichment effort. Moscow appears to be using its control over the Bushehr project to press Iran for concessions on its nuclear program.

A European diplomat last month said that Moscow had warned Tehran it would not deliver fuel to the plant unless Tehran lifts the veil of secrecy on suspicious past atomic activities. The IAEA has since reported increased cooperation from the Iranians over its program.

Iran currently has the ability to enrich small amounts of uranium for nuclear fuel but still nowhere near enough to power a nuclear plant, much less create a weapon, but Tehran has made it clear it is developing its enrichment capacity.

Russian officials say the plant cannot open until six months after the current fuel is delivered.

Enriched to a low degree, uranium is used as a reactor fuel; higher enrichment creates material for a nuclear warhead.

One solution that has been suggested to the controversy over Iran's nuclear program is for it to abandon its efforts to enrich uranium and just buy the necessary fuel from Russia.

In a separate report, state television said that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had offered his country's nuclear knowledge to Saudi Arabia.

Talks Underway After Iranian Requests a Visit

In a move that has stunned New York, the Bloomberg administration is in discussions to escort the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to ground zero during his visit to New York next week, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said today.

The Iranian mission to the U.N. made the request to the New York City Police Department and the Secret Service, who will jointly oversee security during the president's two-day visit. Mr. Ahmadinejad is scheduled to arrive September 24 to speak to the U.N. General Assembly as the Security Council decides whether to increase sanctions against Iran for its uranium enrichment program.

Mr. Kelly said the NYPD and Secret Service were in discussions with the Iranian mission about the logistics for the possible visit, and whether it will take place at all. He said Mr. Ahmadinejad would not be allowed to descend into the pit for safety reasons related to ongoing construction there.

"There has been some interest expressed in his visiting the area," Mr. Kelly said. "It's something that we are prepared to handle if in fact it does happen."

Mr. Kelly said that Mr. Ahmadinejad had not indicated why he wants to visit the site of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

A spokeswoman for the Senator Thomspon quickly condemned the proposed visit.

"It is an insult to the memories of those who died on 9/11 at the hands of terrorists, and those who have fought terrorism for years, to allow the president of the world's top state sponsor of terrorism to step foot at ground zero," the spokeswoman, Karen Hanretty, said. "Iran is responsible for supplying weapons and supporting extremist who are killing US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan to this very day."

A major American Jewish leader, Malcolm Hoenlein, said a visit by Mr. Ahmadinejad "would violate the sanctity of the sacred place and the memory of those who perished there."

Mr. Hoenlein, the vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, is a leading figure in organizing a protest against the Iranian leader Monday in front of the U.N.

He told The New York Sun that the Iranian president should be restricted to the immediate vicinity of the U.N. and should not be permitted to travel the full extent of the 25-mile radius that is normally allowed for foreign dignitaries attending meetings at the world body.

Iran has been called the world's "most active state sponsor of terrorism" by the U.S. State Department.

Lieutenant General John Abizaid faces high expectations in his role as the new man in charge of US Central Command. He is trumpeted as the man who could help sway the hearts and minds of people in the Middle East.

The grandson of Christian Lebanese immigrants, he is a fluent Arabic speaker who professes to love the Arab world.

The 52-year-old father of three is said to be a new breed of American military leader, combining hands-on military leadership with scholarly achievement.
He has a reputation for being less doctrinaire on strategy and has strongly advocated training troops in peacekeeping as well as offensive roles.

Lieutenant General Abizaid went to university in Jordan and holds a master's degree in Middle Eastern studies from Harvard - earning him the nickname "Mad Arab" while at the US Military Academy in West Point.

His 30-year military career is equally impressive, and includes stints in northern Iraq during the latest Gulf crisis, Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina. He served as an operations officer with a UN observer group in Lebanon and was assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

While leading a US Army Ranger rifle company during the 1983 invasion of Grenada, he apparently inspired a scene in the 1986 Clint Eastwood film 'Heartbreak Ridge' when he used a commandeered bulldozer to advance on a Cuban position.

Reassuring message

As head of US Central Command, Lieutenant General Abizaid will be responsible for military operations from the Horn of Africa to Central Asia, covering much of the Middle East.

He faces a tough task, dealing with the increased terrorist threat in the region as well as reconstruction commitments in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

In March, he expressed confidence that Iraqi civilians would see American forces as liberators and not conquerors. "I would say, as a person who has studied the Arab world and loves the Arab world, that the majority of educated Arabs that I talk to know that Saddam Hussein has been a plague on the Arab world and on his own people," he said. Jean AbiNader of the Arab-American Institute says his appointment should send a reassuring message to Arab-Americans and the Arab world.


"There's concern... that the US is discriminating against Arab-Americans because of their ethnicity and religion," he told the US-based National Review.

"To have someone in that kind of position, who is clearly not just there for show, is really important".

But Daniel Bymann, of the Brookings Institution's Saban Center for Middle East Policy, said the issue of Lieutenant General Abizaid's ethnicity is unlikely to hold sway with ordinary people in Iraq. "The Iraqis are likely to be more focused on whether the incoming individual can deliver humanitarian relief and maintain order," he said. "That's what they'll judge him on, not his ethnic background".

Iran has promised a devastating “final response” to supporters of the Jewish State on October 12, the Islamic Republic’s Quds (Jerusalem) Day.

“Supporters of the Zionist regime will receive their response during the world Quds Day's rallies,” Iranian government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham said at a weekly press conference Wednesday.


According to the state-controlled Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Elham was describing Iran's planned response for US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's visit “to the occupied Palestine [sic].”

“I ask all the Muslims of the world and the Muslim governments to join together to sever the hand of this usurper and its supporters,” Khomeini said when proposing the day. “I call on all the Muslims of the world to select as Quds Day the last Friday in the holy month of Ramadan - which is itself a determining period and can also be the determiner of the Palestinian people’s fate - and through a ceremony demonstrating the solidarity of Muslims world-wide, announce their support for the legitimate rights of the Muslim people. I ask G-d Almighty for the victory of the Muslims over the infidels.”On Quds Day in 2000, Khomeini’s successor Khamenei called for Israel’s destruction, saying it is “the only way to solve the problems of the Middle East.”



Open Threats of War


One of Khamenei’s top advisers, Major General Yahya Rahim-Safavi, declared Tuesday that Iran would strike “in shortest possible time” in case of any strike on its nuclear facilities. He referred specifically to the army of suicide-bombers and child-soldiers active during the Iran-Iraq war. "The enemy will face strong armed forces especially the Basij [suicide-bombers and child soldiers] if it unleashed a military attack on Iran," he said. He claimed that the Basij army has 20 million members.According to IRNA, “He said that the US has been entangled in a quagmire in Iraq and cannot easily survive.”

Bush's recent statement that a nuclear Iran would place the region under threat of nuclear holocaust, Iran's embassy in Mexico released the following statement Tuesday: "The term used by President George W. Bush should be referred to what the US carried out in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the World War II when it destroyed the two Japanese cities with atomic bombs." It added that Bush “implicitly admitted that what Washington had done in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a crime worse than Hitler's crimes."

The Sound of Teru'ah

"Happy are the people that know the trumpet (shofar) call (te'ruah); O' G-d, in the light of Your countenance they shall walk" (Psalms 89:16).

This verse, recited directly after the shofar blowing on Rosh HaShanah, is explained by the Ba'al Shem Tov z"l as follows: The epitome of spiritual work is a broken heart; the perfected manner of spiritual service is that of walking humbly (with G-d). Happy are the people who know the te'ruah--who know how to shout for joy (l'ha-riah, a permutation of the word te'ruah), as they break their inflated sense of separate existence ("ego"). Inwardly their heart is broken, but outwardly they are joyous, as they have merited to be true servants of G-d. "O' G-d--the Supernal One," they request, "in the light of Your countenance they shall walk." Wherever they may be, let them bask in the light of Your countenance.

The Baal Shem Tov renders te'ruah as referring to the breaking (as in l'roea, "to break") of one's inflated "ego" and haughtiness. Similarly, the Chassidic interpretation of the verse (Psalms 98:4): "Make a joyful noise (Ha'ri-u) to G-d, all the earth" is that for the sake of G-d one must break all of one's "earthly" sense of independent, material existence. Thus, the teruah sounded on Rosh HaShanah, a sound resulting from the breaking of the long simple note (the te'kiah) into numerous short notes. (The she'varim note reflects the breaking of the simple te'kiah into three shorter sounds; the te'ruah--the breaking of the she'varim--breaks each she'varim note into three even shorter sounds, such that each te'kiah is equivalent to nine te'ruah sounds).

"Knowing" the te'ruah ("Happy are the people who know the te'ruah") is the inner knowledge (unique to the Jewish people) of how to call out in joy. It is the perfected service of the broken heart; the inward "breaking" is enclothed in a visible joy, reflecting unaffected "walking humbly."

"A broken and contrite heart, O' G-d, You will not despise" (Psalms 51:19). The perfect vessel for receiving revelations of G-d's inner light is a broken heart; "There is not a more perfect vessel than a broken heart." The Supernal G-d, Havayah, responds to those who humbly turn to Him with a broken heart. In the merit of the broken heart in one's innermost recesses, one's earnest spiritual request, "G-d in the light of your countenance," is met with "they shall walk"--the quality of "walking humbly."

Shofar


There are things that are important for us, so we speak about them. There are things very important to us -- and so words flow out from us, bursting with emotion, meaning and depth.

And then there are things that shake us to the core. The core of our being does not wait for the mind's permission or for the right words -- there are no words that can contain it. It breaks out in a cry, in a scream and in silence.

This is the sound of the shofar: A crying voice, not even of a human being, but of an animal's horn. We need the animal -- not for its coarseness, but on the contrary, because we need to express something so sublime, it cannot find words; so essential and unbounded, the mind can neither fathom it nor hold it back.

The very core of our souls needs to cry, "Father! Father!"

ROSH HASHANAH BASICS:

Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second days of Tishri. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, "head of the year" or "first of the year." Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. This name is somewhat deceptive, because there is little similarity between Rosh Hashanah, one of the holiest days of the year, and the American midnight drinking bash and daytime football game.

There is, however, one important similarity between the Jewish New Year and the American one: Many Americans use the New Year as a time to plan a better life, making "resolutions." Likewise, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year. More on this concept at Days of Awe.

The name "Rosh Hashanah" is not used in the Bible to discuss this holiday. The Bible refers to the holiday as Yom Ha-Zikkaron (the day of remembrance) or Yom Teruah (the day of the sounding of the shofar). The holiday is instituted in Leviticus 23:24-25.

Shofar: Click to hear it blow!The shofar is a ram's horn which is blown somewhat like a trumpet. One of the most important observances of this holiday is hearing the sounding of the shofar in the synagogue. A total of 100 notes are sounded each day. There are four different types of shofar notes: tekiah, a 3 second sustained note; shevarim, three 1-second notes rising in tone, teruah, a series of short, staccato notes extending over a period of about 3 seconds; and tekiah gedolah (literally, "big tekiah"), the final blast in a set, which lasts (I think) 10 seconds minimum. One that has been suggested is that the shofar's sound is a call to repentance. The shofar is not blown if the holiday falls on Shabbat.

No work is permitted on Rosh Hashanah. Much of the day is spent in synagogue, where the regular daily liturgy is somewhat expanded. In fact, there is a special prayerbook called the machzor used for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur because of the extensive liturgical changes for these holidays.

Another popular observance during this holiday is eating apples dipped in honey, a symbol of our wish for a sweet new year. This was the second Jewish religious practice I was ever exposed to (the first one: lighting Chanukkah candles), and I highly recommend it. It's yummy. We also dip bread in honey (instead of the usual practice of sprinkling salt on it) at this time of year for the same reason.

Another popular practice of the holiday is Tashlikh ("casting off"). We walk to flowing water, such as a creek or river, on the afternoon of the first day and empty our pockets into the river, symbolically casting off our sins. Small pieces of bread are commonly put in the pocket to cast off. This practice is not discussed in the Bible, but is a long-standing custom. Tashlikh is normally observed on the afternoon of the first day, before afternoon services. When the first day occurs on Shabbat, many synagogues observe Tashlikh on Sunday afternoon, to avoid carrying (the bread) on Shabbat.

Religious services for the holiday focus on the concept of G-d's sovereignty.

The common greeting at this time is L'shanah tovah ("for a good year"). This is a shortening of "L'shanah tovah tikatev v'taihatem" (or to women, "L'shanah tovah tikatevi v'taihatemi"), which means "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year." More on that concept at Days of Awe.

You may notice that the Bible speaks of Rosh Hashanah as occurring on the first day of the seventh month. The first month of the Jewish calendar is Nissan, occurring in March and April. Why, then, does the Jewish "new year" occur in Tishri, the seventh month?

Judaism has several different "new years," a concept which may seem strange at first, but think of it this way: the American "new year" starts in January, but the new "school year" starts in September, and many businesses have "fiscal years" that start at various times of the year. In Judaism, Nissan 1 is the new year for the purpose of counting the reign of kings and months on the calendar, Elul 1 (in August) is the new year for the tithing of animals, Shevat 15 (in February) is the new year for trees (determining when first fruits can be eaten, etc.), and Tishri 1 (Rosh Hashanah) is the new year for years (when we increase the year number. Sabbatical and Jubilee years begin at this time).

Notes on Rosh HaShanah

Rosh HaShanah, literally, "the head of the year," is often--usually--referred to as the Jewish "New Year."

This is not, strictly speaking, correct. G-d instructs the Jews on the eve of the Exodus that the month in which the Exodus occurs shall be considered the "first month." The month of Tishri, which begins at sundown today, is in fact the seventh month.

This is quite significant. There are a number of cycles of seven in the Jewish calendar--the most obvious being Shabbat, the seventh day, the day of rest. This seventh day of rest is mirrored in the yearly cycle, in which the seventh year is a year of shmita, also known as a sabbatical year, in which we are instructed to refrain from sowing and reaping and during which we are assured that HaShem will provide for us.

After a cycle of seven shmita years--49 years--has passed, the fiftieth year is the Yovel--the Jubilee year--in which debts are cancelled, lands "sold" under long lease return to its owner, etc. It is the year in which we are instructed to "Proclaim Liberty throughout the Land, unto all the inhabitants thereof," the words which, if I recall correctly, are also inscribed upon the Liberty Bell.

The cycle of shmita years and the Yovel is replicated in miniature each year, with the counting of the Omer from the second night of Passover. Seven weeks are counted, ending on the fiftieth day with Shavuot, the "Feast of Weeks," which is the anniversary of the Revelation at Sinai. Thus, a parallel is drawn between the Yovel, the Jubilee year, and the giving and receiving of the Torah--and, since the Yovel year is a large-form remembrance of the receiving of the Torah, it is also a foretaste of the Messianic era.

What has this to do with Rosh HaShanah? The month of Tishri is full of holidays; Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, and followed by the holiday of Sukkot. It is as close to a solid month of festivity as one can get without letting business totally go by the board. It is, in other words, a month of Shabbat--the seventh month is the Sabbath played out on a monthly, rather than a weekly, scale.

It was during Yom Kippur that the shofar was blown to herald the Jubilee Year. This year, Yom Kippur will fall on a Sabbath, so the shofar will not be blown--but this is, nonetheless, a Jubilee year.

So at sundown today we enter into the Sabbath of months, which will usher in the Jubilee year which serves as a foretaste of the Messianic era.

My mistake: it is NOT a Jubilee Year; it is merely a sabbatical--shmita--year. Just prior to Rosh HaShanah, at minyan, we all entered into a Prozbul, which assigns debts to a bet din (rabbinical court) so that they could be collected on our behalf in the coming year.
