    http://www.naturalnews.com/043214_psychedelic_mushrooms_psilocybin_brain_cells.html

Much like the cannabinoids found naturally in cannabis, the psilocybin in shrooms binds to special receptors in the brain that help stimulate growth and healing, in this case brain cell growth and regeneration. After testing psilocybin on several groups of mice, the research team found that psilocybin helps repair damaged brains cells and alleviate or even cure mental disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and clinical depression.

Dr. Juan R. Sanchez-Ramos, M.D., Ph.D., lead author of the study, arrived at this conclusion after testing the effects of psilocybin on mice trained to fear an electric shock when hearing a sound associated with that shock. Mice given small doses of psilocybin learned to stop reacting to the noise much more quickly than those given no psilocybin, illustrating the ability of the compound to literally rewire neurons and promote positive changes in memory.

Recognized as a "nootropic" agent, psilocybin appears to have numerous pro-cognitive functions that can help improve the overall function of the brain's hippocampus, or HP, which is responsible for learning and converting short-term memories into long-term memories. According to Dr. Sanchez-Ramos' research, the ability of the HP to perform these and other functions is dependent upon the generation of new neurons in the brain, which psilocybin is capable of facilitating.

"The proposition that psilocybin impacts cognition and stimulates hippocampal neurogenesis is based on extensive evidence that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine
or 5-HT) acting on specific 5-HT receptor sub-types (most likely the 5-HT2A receptor) is involved in the regulation of neurogenesis in hippocampus," says Dr. Sanchez-Ramos. "The in vitro and in vivo animal data is compelling enough to explore whether psilocybin will enhance neurogenesis and result in measurable improvements in learning."

    http://www.leap.cc/about/who-we-are/

Founded on March 16, 2002, LEAP is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization made up of current and former members of the law enforcement and criminal justice communities who are speaking out about the failures of our existing drug policies. Those policies have failed, and continue to fail, to effectively address the problems of drug abuse, especially the problems of juvenile drug use, the problems of addiction, and the problems of crime caused by the existence of a criminal black market in drugs.

Although those who speak publicly for LEAP are people from the law enforcement and criminal justice communities, a large number of our supporting members do not have such experience. You don’t have to have law enforcement experience to join us.

By continuing to fight the so-called “War on Drugs,” the US government has worsened these problems of society instead of alleviating them. A system of regulation and control of these substances (by the government, replacing the current system of control by the black market) would be a less harmful, less costly, more ethical, and more effective public policy.

In September, New York Police officers responded to an emotionally disturbed man causing a ruckus at a Times Square bus terminal by opening fire on him while they were surrounded by crowds and traffic. They missed him and hit two innocent bystanders (one of whom was in a walker). Police said at the time they thought the man, Glenn Broadnax, was reaching for a gun, but he turned out to be unarmed.

Even though Broadnax was not armed, an indictment unsealed Wednesday is charging him with assault for the injuries caused by police gunfire.

3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4 For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

Militants destroyed the military entrance to Kabul’s international airport on Wednesday morning, as a huge explosion rocked an area used by local and international troops.

Some reports suggested a suicide attacker targeted a military convoy other officials said the blast was the result of an abandoned car.

The city was already on a heightened level of security after intelligence forces claimed to have foiled a string of attacks in recent days.

At a time when Wall Street is absolutely swimming in wealth, New York City is experiencing an epidemic of homelessness. According to the New York Times, the last time there was this many homeless children in New York City was during the days of the Great Depression. And the number of homeless children in the United States overall recently set a new all-time record.

The American government has been critical of China's
forced-labor policies, but the United States has a burgeoning prison
    labor pool of its own.

Russia Today filed a report on Sunday that
said hundreds of companies nationwide now benefit from the low, and
sometimes no-wage labor of America's prisoners.

Prison labor is being harvested on a massive scale, according to professors Steve Fraser and Joshua B. Freeman.

    "All
told, nearly a million prisoners are now making office furniture,
working in call centers, fabricating body armor, taking hotel
reservations, working in slaughterhouses, or manufacturing textiles,
shoes, and clothing, while getting paid somewhere between 93 cents and
$4.73 per day," the professors write.

A Jordanian-based Islamist cleric urged jihadi terrorists last week not to emulate the late South African leader Nelson Mandela because he is an “infidel” and was given awards by major world powers.

The cleric, Eyad Qunaibi, is western-educated and regarded by U.S. officials as a prominent jihadist ideologue who supports the al Nusra Front, the main al Qaeda rebel group in Syria.

Qunaibi warned Muslims against viewing Mandela as a model, according to a partial translation of a 10-minute video posted to YouTube Saturday.

Qunaibi also criticized Arab news media for giving extensive coverage to Mandela, who died Nov. 5, [sic]

Mandela’s opposition to racism and discrimination “should not be the reason to describe him by Muslims as an icon of freedom or to take him as a model for Muslims,” Qunaibi said.

Qunaibi said Mandela is not a model for Muslims because he had received awards from “tyrants and killers” and “merchants of war,” including Russia, the United States, India, Turkey, and Libya

They are running an ad on the back of buses here in the county saying that there are 800 homeless children here. I think there must be something unusual about the definition of homeless here at least. I think its more like maybe one hundred truly what we would consider homeless. A fair number of teenagers just decide a life with their friends going from sofa to sofa is fun. Thats here among suburbanites.

Moscow has called for a “speedy” end to the Gaza Strip blockade after Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a rare phone conversation with Gaza’s Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

“[Lavrov] called for the speedy removal of the blockade of the Gaza Strip to improve the humanitarian plight of Palestinian civilians,” the government’s Voice of Russia website quoted the Moscow’s foreign ministry as saying in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement added: “Lavrov reiterated Russia’s principled position based on U.N. decisions in support of legitimate hopes of Palestinians for the creation of an independent and territorial integral state co-existing in peace and harmony with its neighbors.”

17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

On her arrival in Dallas in 1957, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, 74 at the time, desperately needed to dispel the shame of her anti-Semitic, collaborationist wartime activities in occupied France. She was invited to Dallas by Stanley Marcus, the cultivated, Harvard-educated “Merchant Prince,” who ran the Neiman Marcus department store. The unspoken bargain between them, according to her many biographers, was this: Chanel would receive one of Neiman Marcus’ annual Distinguished Service in the Field of Fashion Awards—and all the sales that would inevitably follow—and “The Store,” as it was (and still is) known, would receive a state visit from fashion’s dowager queen.

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — Many people who use search engines eventually wind up entering in a typo or incorrect term that results in some rather interesting, and sometimes shocking, search results. According to a former government contractor, such a minor misstep while using Google has turned his life into a living nightmare.

In a lawsuit, Jeffrey Kantor claims that the federal government has been harassing him ever since he accidentally entered in the search term "How do I build a radio controlled bomb?" Kantor claims he actually meant to type "How do I build a radio controlled airplane?" but Google's auto-complete feature populated the search field with the "bomb" text, and he hit enter before he realized it.

CourtHouseNews.com reports Kantor was fired by the government contracting firm he was working for after the government unleashed an invasive investigation into every aspect of his life.

American missing in Iran was on rogue CIA mission

(More leaks from the Administration via CIA channels?)

The American Robert Levinson, who disppeared on Iranian Kish island in 2007, is now confirmed to have been on what US intelligence officials describe as a rogue mission at the direction of CIA analysts with no authority to run overseas operations. Three veteran analysts were later forced out of their jobs. But before that, CIA officials told Congress and the FBI that Levinson did not have a relationship with the agency and played down its ties with him. Ultimately, the agency assumed responsibility and paid compensation to his wife. Levinson’s whereabouts remain unknown. Investigators can’t even say for certain whether he’s still alive. Three years ago, the Levinson family received a video and later pictures of him shackled and dressed in an orange jumpsuit.

IPT Exclusive: Jihad-Supporting Imam Raised Millions on U.S. Fundraising Tour

A Syrian Sunni sheik who raised at least $3.6 million during a U.S. fundraising tour last April has blessed a new coalition of Syrian jihadist groups aiming to replace the Assad regime with an Islamic state.

Sheik Osama al-Rifai, who raised the money for the Franklin, Mich.-based Syrian Sunrise Foundation, endorsed the creation of the Islamic Front in a Nov. 22 YouTube video. The front represents a merger of seven jihadist groups fighting Bashar al-Assad's forces. Many of them have ties to al-Qaida.

"The unification of these great Islamist and jihadist groups is not a normal piece of news, but is a great event that brings the happiness and thrill to every Muslim, not only in Syria but in the whole Islamic world," al-Rifai said in remarks translated by the Investigative Project on Terrorism. "I congratulate this brilliant news; I congratulate the brothers who formed it. I cannot say that we bless this group because it is they who should be blessed by them."

Once upon a time, hedge fund manager Eddie Lampert was living a Wall Street fairy tale. His fairy godmother was Ayn Rand, the dashing diva of free-market ideology whose quirky economic notions would transform him into a glamorous business hero.

For a while, it seemed to work like a charm. Pundits called him the “Steve Jobs of the investment world.” The new Warren Buffett. By 2006 he was flying high, the richest man in Connecticut, managing over $15 billion thorough his hedge fund, ESL Investments.

Stoked by his Wall Street success, Lampert plunged headlong into the retail world. Undaunted by his lack of industry experience and hailed a genius, Lampert boldly pushed to merge Kmart and Sears with a layoff and cost-cutting strategy that would, he promised, send profits into the stratosphere. Meanwhile the hotshot threw cash around like an oil sheikh, buying a $40 million pad in Florida’s Biscayne Bay, a record even for that star-studded county.

Fast-forward to 2013: The fairy tale has become a nightmare.

Lampert is now known as one of the worst CEOs in America — the man who flushed Sears down the toilet with his demented management style and harebrained approach to retail. Sears stock is tanking. His hedge fun is down 40 percent, and the business press has turned from praising Lampert’s genius towatching gleefully as his ship sinks. Investors are running from “Crazy Eddie” like the plague.

That’s what happens when Ayn Rand is the basis for your business plan.

That’s one possible consequence of an idea called “rainbow gravity,” so-named because it posits that gravity’s effects on spacetime are felt differently by different wavelengths of light, aka different colors in the rainbow.

An explosion and subsequent fire Monday morning at Arkansas’ Nuclear One power plant shut down one of the facility’s nuclear reactors.

A nearby resident heard a “loud, ground shaking explosion,” according to River Valley News, and then saw smoke (the local news site has a collection of images taken of the incident). The blaze, which ignited at 7:50 a.m., had been contained by 9:15. The reactor will remain offline while investigators determine the cause of the fire and review any repairs that need to be made.

A few weeks ago, for instance, I visited friends in Portland. I kept calling them on their cellphones, and they kept replying with text messages. I eventually met up with one of them at a bar. But before we could even speak a word to one another, we had to deal with this accumulated tension.

And thus I began (as I so often do) by asking just the wrong question. “Don’t you ever talk on the phone anymore?”

  114. Scientists have created the first ever “sperm-based biobots” by trapping single sperm cells inside metal nanotubes and remotely controlling their direction using magnets.

The resulting biobot (a ‘biological robot’, referring to a bacterium or cell which has been programmed to behave in a certain way) could be put to a range of uses, including delivering drugs to a specific target in the body or fertilising an egg, reports New Scientist.

The experiments have been led by Oliver Schmidt at the Institute for Integrative Nanosciences in Dresden, Germany. Schmidt and his team created magnetic nanotubes 50 microns long by 5 to 8 microns in diameter and dropped these into a fluid containing bull sperm.

  116. SEATTLE, Dec. 12 (UPI) --
U.S. geneticists say a second code hiding within DNA changes how scientists read its instructions and interpret mutations to make sense of health and disease.

Since the genetic code was deciphered in the 1960s, scientists have assumed it was used exclusively to write information about proteins, but University of Washington scientists say they've discovered genomes use the genetic code to write two separate "languages."

One, long understood, describes how proteins are made, while the other instructs the cell on how genes are controlled. One language is written on top of the other, which is why the second language remained hidden for so long, a university release said Thursday.

"For over 40 years we have assumed that DNA changes affecting the genetic code solely impact how proteins are made," UW genome sciences Professor John Stamatoyannopoulos said. "Now we know that this basic assumption about reading the human genome missed half of the picture. These new findings highlight that DNA is an incredibly powerful information storage device, which nature has fully exploited in unexpected ways."

Parts of the genetic code have two meanings, one related to protein sequence, and one related to gene control, the researchers said, and both apparently evolved in concert with each other.

A Chinese naval vessel tried to force a U.S. guided missile warship to stop in international waters recently, causing a tense military standoff in the latest case of Chinese maritime harassment, according to defense officials.

The guided missile cruiser USS Cowpens, which recently took part in disaster relief operations in the Philippines, was confronted by Chinese warships in the South China Sea near Beijing’s new aircraft carrier Liaoning, according to officials familiar with the incident.

“On December 5th, while lawfully operating in international waters in the South China Sea, USS Cowpens and a PLA Navy vessel had an encounter that required maneuvering to avoid a collision,” a Navy official said.

“This incident underscores the need to ensure the highest standards of professional seamanship, including communications between vessels, to mitigate the risk of an unintended incident or mishap.”

A State Department official said the U.S. government issued protests to China in both Washington and Beijing in both diplomatic and military channels.

The Belgian Senate has voted in
favour of extending its euthanasia law to terminally-ill children.

The Senate voted 50-17 in favour of the legislation, which is opposed by
    religious leaders in Belgium.

The bill seeks to allow children to ask for euthanasia if their illness is
terminal, they are in great pain and there is no available treatment.

It will now go before the lower house of parliament, where correspondents say
it is likely to be approved.

Belgium passed a law decriminalising euthanasia for terminally-ill people
over the age of 18 in 2002.

The latest bill proposes to make Belgium the first country in the world to
remove any age limit on the practice.

Terry L. Loewen, 58, an aviation technician who FBI agents say was inspired by Usama bin Laden, spent months planning the attack and was intent on using his employee access card to drive the vehicle loaded with explosives to a terminal, Barry Grissom, the U.S. Attorney for the district of Kansas, said, citing the criminal complaint. Loewen planned on dying in the explosion as a martyr, Grissom said.
