The Weed Smoker's Dream

Then God said,
“I give you every seed-bearing plant
on the face of the whole earth
and every tree that has fruit
with seed in it.
They will be yours for food."

Mindscapes is our new column on brain science with a difference: we meet people who live with the world's most mysterious neurological conditions

    Name: Graham
    Condition: Cotard's syndrome

"When I was in hospital I kept on telling them that the tablets weren't going to do me any good 'cause my brain was dead. I lost my sense of smell and taste. I didn't need to eat, or speak, or do anything. I ended up spending time in the graveyard because that was the closest I could get to death."

Nine years ago, Graham woke up and discovered he was dead.

He was in the grip of Cotard's syndrome. People with this rare condition believe that they, or parts of their body, no longer exist.

For Graham, it was his brain that was dead, and he believed that he had killed it. Suffering from severe depression, he had tried to commit suicide by taking an electrical appliance with him into the bath.

THE language of life has been rewritten. A bacterium has had its genome recoded so that one of its genetic words has been freed up to impart a different meaning, allowing the creation of proteins that don't exist in nature.

The work has been described as the first step towards a new biology because the techniques used should open the door to reinventing the meaning of several words simultaneously. This could lead to novel types of biomaterials and drugs with exotic properties. It also raises the tantalising possibility of integrating these genetically recoded organisms (GROs) into living organisms – to create virus-resistant plants or animals, for example.

To understand how the recoding was achieved, we need to zoom down to what happens inside cells when proteins are made. First, an enzyme called RNA polymerase converts our DNA code into RNA. Then the cell's protein-production machinery, the ribosome, reads the four letters of the RNA code in sets of three letters called codons. The three-letter "words" indicate which amino acid – the building blocks of proteins – the ribosome should add next to its growing chain of peptides.

One of the laborers, Junaid, recounted how people attempted to collect bodies. They carried stretchers, blankets and water. But, minutes later, another series of missiles were launched. They targeted those who had come to clean up the devastation and six people were instantly killed. Two others died from wounds.

In total, “18 people were killed in the drone strikes that evening and at least 22 others were injured, including an eight-year-old girl named Shehrbano who sustained shrapne linjuries to her leg.”

“Some people lost their hands,” Nabeel said of the second strike. “Others had their heads cut off. Some lost their legs. Human body parts were scattered everywhere on the ground. The bodies were burnt and it was not possible to recognize them.”

No more villagers went near where victims had been killed until the next morning. Just about everyone feared if they came close to the site they would be killed in another attack.

In another attack on October 24, 2012, which Amnesty International detailed in the organization’s report, a sixty-eight year-old grandmother named Mamana Bibi was killed instantly by two Hellfire missiles while she was gathering okra in the family fields for cooking that evening. Two grandchildren, Zuhair and Nabeela, witnessed the drone strike.

“There was a very bad smell and the area was full of smoke and dust. I couldn’t breathe properly for several minutes,” said Zubair.

Nabeela recalled the explosion had been “very close to us” and had been “very strong.” It took her into the air and pushed her to the ground. When she ventured to where her grandmother had been killed, Nabeela said, “I saw her shoes. We found her mutilated body a short time afterwards,” recalled Nabeela. “It had been thrown quite a long distance away by the blast and it was in pieces. We collected as many different parts from the field and wrapped them in a cloth.”

Following this attack, a “second volley of drone missiles” were fired. They hit a “vacant area of the field” nine feet from where their grandmother had been standing.

    The report describes:

A few minutes after the first strike a second volley of drone missiles was fired, hitting a vacant area of the field around 9ft from where Mamana Bibi was killed. Mamana Bibi’s grandsons Kaleemul and Samadur Rehman were there, having rushed to the scene when the first volley struck. Kaleemul Rehman recalled: “I was sitting at my home drinking tea [when] suddenly I heard a sound of explosions. I ran outside and saw the rocket had left a big crater in the field and dead animals, and the area was full of smoke and dust. I could not see my grandmother anywhere.” As the two boys surveyed the area, they discovered their grandmother had been blown to pieces. Fearing further attacks, the two tried to flee the area when the second volley of missiles was fired. Kaleemul was hit by shrapnel, breaking his left leg and suffering a large, deep gash to that thigh. “This time I felt something hit my leg and the wave of the blast knocked me unconscious,” Kaleemul said. “Later I regained consciousness and noticed that my leg was wounded and my cousin was carrying me on his back to the main road, about 1.5 miles away.” From there a car drove Kaleemul to the Agency Headquarters Hospital.

Mamana Bibi, an elderly woman, was not engaged in any fighting when she was hit. She may have been killed as a result of “faulty intelligence.” Or, perhaps, “drone operators deliberately targeted and killed” her. It is unknown what exactly happened because US officials refuse to provide additional information.

UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions Christof Heyns has called this CIA tactic of targeting civilian rescuers a “war crime.” http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article36619.htm

Novelist Ayn Rand was prescribed the amphetamine Benzedrine by her doctor to combat her fatigue. But the author was a big fan of the stimulant drug and started to work day and night -- once she sat for 30 hours in one stretch working on her notes for the novel "The Fountainhead." The abuse of the drug had its price, however. Rand was dependent on it until her death and it was responsible for mood swings as well as paranoia.

The cops could have been Obamas sons..............
Northern California sheriff's deputies have shot and killed a 13-year-old boy after repeatedly telling him to drop what turned out to be a replica assault rifle, sheriff's officials and family members said.

Two Sonoma County deputies on patrol saw the boy walking with what appeared to be a high-powered weapon Tuesday afternoon in Santa Rosa, sheriff's Lt. Dennis O'Leary said.

The replica gun resembled an AK-47 with a black magazine cartridge and brown butt, according to a photograph released by the sheriff's office. Deputies would only learn after the shooting that it wasn't an actual firearm, according to O'Leary.

Rodrigo Lopez identified the boy as his son, Andy, to a newspaper and said the young teen was carrying a toy gun that belonged to a friend.

After spotting the boy, the deputies called for backup and repeatedly ordered him to drop the gun, O'Leary said in a news release. It wasn't clear whether he pointed the replica assault rifle at the deputies or made any type of threatening gesture. The sheriff's office referred calls to the Santa Rosa Police Department, which did not immediately return a call for comment.

Nine senior commanding generals have been fired by the Obama administration this year, leading to speculation by active and retired members of the military that a purge of its commanders is underway.

Retired generals and current senior commanders that have spoken with TheBlaze say the administration is not only purging the military of commanders they don't agree with, but is striking fear in the hearts of those still serving.

The timing comes as the five branches of the U.S. armed forces are reducing staff due to budget cuts, and as U.S. troops are expected to withdraw from Afghanistan next year.

"I think they're using the opportunity of the shrinkage of the military to get rid of people that don't agree with them or not tow the party line. Remember, as (former White House chief of staff) Rahm Emanuel said, never waste a crisis," a senior retired general told TheBlaze on the condition of anonymity because he still provide services to the government and fears possible retribution.

"Even as a retired general, it's still possible for the administration to make life miserable for us. If we're working with the government or have contracts, they can just rip that out from under us," he said.

Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Paul Vallely, an outspoken critic of the Obama administration, said the White House fails to take action or investigate its own, but finds it easy to fire military commanders "who have given their lives for their country."

What would evidence that Mursi was colluding with al-Qaeda during his tenure as president of Egypt reveal about Barack Obama’s support for Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood regime?...............
His name is Dr. Abdel Reheem Ali and he is widely regarded as the most reputable source for all things Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Ali is also credited with revealing what could be extremely explosive evidence to be used in the upcoming trials of Muslim Brotherhood leaders in Egypt, to include former President Mohammed Mursi. That evidence reportedly includes recordings of phone conversations between Mursi and al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri http://shoebat.com/2013/10/23/source-recordings-mursi-colluding-al-qaeda/

Mursi provided al-Qaeda with four training camps in the Sinai. Another phone call was initiated by Mursi before he visited Pakistan. He was supposed to visit with al-Zawahiri at a hotel in Pakistan but met with an al-Qaeda broker instead. After the meeting, Mursi spoke with Ayman al-Zawahiri for 43 seconds. When he returned from Pakistan, he gave presidential pardons to dangerous jihadists despite security warnings. The list included twenty individuals dangerous to national security in which the Muslim Brotherhood provided $50 MIllion to al-Qaeda to aid and abet the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

Despite all of this evidence being available to the Obama administration, it continued to send military aid to the Mursi regime.

Who is more deserving of punishment by the United States? Millions of Egyptians, for ousting the Muslim Brotherhood? Or the Muslim Brotherhood, for habitually terrorizing and murdering Christians, among many other crimes?....

According to the unmistakably clear actions of the Obama administration, it is the millions of anti-Brotherhood Egyptians who deserve punishment.

Last Sunday, the Church of the Virgin Mary in Waraq near Cairo was attacked during a wedding ceremony, leaving four dead and many wounded. According to Dr. Hisham Abdul Hamid of forensics, two of those who were murdered were Christian children—two girls; two Marys: 12-year-old Mary Nabil Fahmy, who took five shots in the chest, and 8-year-old Mary Ashraf Masih (meaning “Christ”), who took a bullet in the back which burst from the front.

  79. Virtually all the truths about preventing heart attacks that physicians and patients have held dear for more than a generation are wrong and need to be abandoned, Malhotra writes. He musters a passel of recent research that suggests that the "obsession" with lowering a patients' total cholesterol with statins, and a public health message that has made all sources of saturated fat verboten to the health-conscious, have failed to reduce heart disease.

Indeed, he writes, they have set off market forces that have put people at greater risk. After the Framingham Heart Study showed a correlation between total cholesterol and risk for coronary artery disease in the early 1970s, patients at risk for heart disease were urged to swear off red meat, school lunchrooms shifted to fat-free and low-fat milk, and a food industry eager to please consumers cutting their fat intake rushed to boost the flavor of their new fat-free offerings with added sugar (and, of course, with trans-fats).

The result is a rate of obesity that has "rocketed" upward, writes Malhotra. And, despite a generation of patients taking statins (and enduring their common side effects), the trends in cardiovascular disease have not demonstrably budged.

Rethinking Selfishness: Ayn Rand’s New Conception of Egoism

    [Description]

Dr. Onkar Ghate will deliver a lecture, “Rethinking Selfishness: Ayn Rand’s New Conception of Egoism,” and hold a public Q&A. His lecture will explore how Rand challenges us to radically reconsider our beliefs about right and wrong, why our misunderstandings about the notion of selfishness impair our ability to think about morality, and how Rand’s conception of self-interest is distinctive. Onkar will explain why selfishness has served him as source of unconventional but inspiring moral guidance and why Rand teaches that morality is about creating a self whose interests you can truly speak of advancing.

Throughout history, man has been offered the following alternative: be “moral” through a life of sacrifice to others—or be “selfish” through a life of sacrificing others to oneself. In The Virtue of Selfishness, Ayn Rand blasts this as a false alternative, holding that a selfish, non-sacrificial way of life is both possible and necessary for man.

The Virtue of Selfishness is a collection of essays presenting Ayn Rand’s radical moral code of rational selfishness and its opposition to the prevailing morality of altruism—i.e., to the duty to sacrifice for the sake of others.

In “The Objectivist Ethics,” Rand gives an outline of her code of rational selfishness, and of her argument establishing it as the only objective, fact-based moral code in human history. In the course of the essay, she raises and answers a fundamental and fascinating question: Why does one even need a morality?

In essays including “The Ethics of Emergencies,” “The ‘Conflicts’ of Men’s Interests,” and “Doesn’t Life Require Compromise?” she raises common ethical questions, shows how altruism has crippled people’s ability to approach them rationally, and explains how her moral code provides a solution to them. In “Man’s Rights” and “The Nature of Government” she applies her ethics to formulate the basic principles of her political philosophy, while rejecting the altruistic doctrines of “rights” to health care, employment, etc.

The Virtue of Selfishness is indispensable reading for anyone who wants to understand the crucial ethical issues at the root at so many of our cultural debates today—who wants to understand the revolutionary ideas that guide the lives of Ayn Rand’s fictional heroes—who wants to lead an existence that is both moral and practical—who wants to discover why, in the words of one of the heroes of Atlas Shrugged, “the purpose of morality is to teach you, not to suffer and die, but to enjoy yourself and live.”

For a change, it was a fun flight. Funny conversation, talking to a new neighbor and the former 2 time heavy-weight champion of the world.
I mentioned I was getting my Harley today. As I was waiting for my bag after the flight, Shannon said, "Now you be care ful on that thing"...I replied, "This coming from a guy who gets paid to be hit in the head?!!!" He just laughed at me, we shook hands and I split. He's in town for book signings and then off to Danville, VA. He has a training camp up there. Oct. 25….(Religion Today) Christians at Vikwantani Redeemed Gospel Church in Mombasa, Kenya arrived for worship Sunday morning (Oct. 20) only to learn that their pastor had been shot to death in their building the night before. Those attending the service began to weep as a church member described what he and others found when they went to the church building late the previous night: the body of pastor Charles Matole slumped in a plastic seat, a Bible in his hand, blood streaming from his head. “His skull was badly damaged,” the church member told Morning Star News. A neighbor, George Mwangi, told Morning Star News that he heard a very loud gunshot at around 11:30 p.m. Matole, who went by the nickname of Patrick, had reportedly told his wife, Claris, that he was going to the church building for his customary time of prayer; when he failed to return on time, she called other church leaders and they found him shot in the head from behind.

Sunday night (Oct. 20), another pastor was killed in Kilifi, 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Mombasa. Ebrahim Kidata of East African Pentecostal Church appeared to have been strangled and left in some bushes. During the riots earlier this month, Muslim youths from the Masjid Musa Mosque shouting “Allahu Akbar [Allah is Greater]” set fire to the Salvation Army Church building in the Majengo area on the outskirts of Mombasa.

Two top generals of the Islamic Republic have warned the United States of coming terrorism, Fars News Agency reported Sunday.

Brig. Gen. Masoud Jazayeri, the deputy chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, attacked U.S. policies in the region and warned, "America on the one hand arms al-Qaida (in the Syrian civil war) and on the other kills (al-Qaida) members. Such a double-standard policy will be divulged sooner or later, and the weapons in possession of al-Qaida and other terrorist groups will target the Americans."

Jazayeri said evidence points to terrorist groups targeting America and certain European countries and said America's counterterrorism policies will backfire. "The outlook of this dirty game by America and Zionists will be the terrorists playing the same with their godfathers," he said.

Meanwhile, the chief commander of the Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Ali Jafari, assailed America for helping certain groups to destabilize Iran and praised the Guards for standing up to the "world's oppressor" with their faith in Islam.

Attending a ceremony for the Martyrs of the Guards, Jafari said, "If these (terrorist) puppet groups stand in front of America, they can conduct suicide attacks in the heart of America."

Don’t donate to the tea party or to evangelical Christian groups — that was the message soldiers at a pre-deployment briefing at Fort Hood said they received from a counter-intelligence agent who headed up the meeting.

If you do, you could face punishment — that was the other half of the message, as reported by Fox News.

The briefing was Oct. 17, and about a half-hour of it was devoted to discussion about how perceived radical groups — like tea party organizations and the Christian-based American Family Association — were “tearing the country apart,” one unnamed soldier said, to Fox News.

Among the remarks the agent allegedly made: Military members who donate to these groups would be subject to discipline under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the soldier reported.

When Thomas Jefferson crafted the Declaration of Independence, he pointed to "certain unalienable rights" with which we were endowed by our "Creator."

What did he mean when he wrote the phrase "unalienable rights," and what rights are "unalienable"?

Jefferson understood "unalienable rights" as fixed rights given to us by our Creator rather than by government. The emphasis on our Creator is crucial, because it shows that the rights are permanent just as the Creator is permanent.

Today as in the past..the people want a King..............

4 One day the nation’s leaders came to Samuel at Ramah 5 and said, “You are an old man. You set a good example for your sons, but they haven’t followed it. Now we want a king to be our leader,[b] just like all the other nations. Choose one for us!”

6 Samuel was upset to hear the leaders say they wanted a king, so he prayed about it. 7 The Lord answered:

Samuel, do everything they want you to do. I am really the one they have rejected as their king. 8 Ever since the day I rescued my people from Egypt, they have turned from me to worship idols. Now they are turning away from you. 9 Do everything they ask, but warn them and tell them how a king will treat them.

10 Samuel told the people who were asking for a king what the Lord had said:

11 If you have a king, this is how he will treat you. He will force your sons to join his army. Some of them will ride in his chariots, some will serve in the cavalry, and others will run ahead of his own chariot.[c] 12 Some of them will be officers in charge of a thousand soldiers, and others will be in charge of fifty. Still others will have to farm the king’s land and harvest his crops, or make weapons and parts for his chariots. 13 Your daughters will have to make perfume or do his cooking and baking.

14 The king will take your best fields, as well as your vineyards, and olive orchards and give them to his own officials. 15 He will also take a tenth of your grain and grapes and give it to his officers and officials.

16 The king will take your slaves and your best young men and your donkeys and make them do his work. 17 He will also take a tenth of your sheep and goats. You will become the king’s slaves, 18 and you will finally cry out for the Lord to save you from the king you wanted. But the Lord won’t answer your prayers.

19-20 The people would not listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want to be like other nations. We want a king to rule us and lead us in battle.”

In response to questions posed by CNSNews.com on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Rangel said that he considers the subsidies part of Congress’ “overall compensation” even though ordinary Americans who earn $174,000 per year would have to have at least nine dependent children to qualify for the same subsidy.

We try to speak for the wrongly accused at this site, and an important part of that mission is to insist that rushing to judgment and assuming the guilt of the presumptively innocent without sufficient evidence is wrong by any measure. We are stranded in an era where, especially when it comes to alleged sex offenses, it is common to assume guilt based solely on an accusation. Women's rights activists preach that people should "always" believe the putative victim (they always leave out the word "putative"). To us, this is both misguided advocacy and a reprehensible affront to the rights and dignity of the presumptively innocent. Instead, the goal should be to be fair to both the accuser and the accused, and to treat both with dignity, without assuming either one is lying or is a criminal.

We stand guilty of the very thing we preach against. We have let down a presumptively innocent young man who is accused of sexual assault in connection with a public sex act caught on video near Ohio University's Athens campus. The woman involved in the sex act said the video actually shows she was raped. We acted too quickly and improperly relied on sources we thought were reliable and assumed it was a sexual assault.

We have had an opportunity to look into the matter with the care we should have exercised before we posted about it, and we simply cannot say that the video depicts a sexual assault. We should not have assumed it does. Among many other things, Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle said: "You could view that picture and certainly suggest that a sexual assault took place. You could also suggest other things." According to Gawker, a reliable source said, "the video shows both parties actively participating, and they both acknowledge that they are being filmed and observed." And: “Another source told the site that the photo’s subjects ‘posed for pictures with each other and with several bystanders after they were finished.’” Investigators urged people not to do the very thing COTWA did: rush to judgement.

It is one thing for women's rights advocates to let this young man down. They have an agenda, and their musings on these issues are notoriously biased and often wrong. It is quite another thing for COTWA to get it wrong.

And make no mistake, we were very wrong to assume it. We owe the young man, his family, his friends, and the community of the wrongly accused, a sincere apology. The offending post has been removed. We are questioning our own judgment in having posted it, and we will strive to be more careful. If we can't do better than that, we need to think about retiring the blog.

Without a staff, and without editorial controls, we make mistakes more often than we'd care to admit. We have received notes from readers who pointed out our error, and we thank them.

Our apology can't make things right. We hope our actions can.

"My Uncle Terwilliger on the Art of Eating Popovers"

    My uncle ordered popovers
from the restaurant's bill of fare.
    And, when they were served,
    he regarded them
    with a penetrating stare.
Then he spoke great words of wisdom
as he sat there on that chair:
    "To eat these things,"
    said my uncle,
    "you must exercise great care.
You may swallow down what's solid
    BUT
you must spit out the air!"
And as you partake of the world's bill of fare,
that's darned good advice to follow.
Do a lot of spitting out the hot air.
And be careful what you swallow.

The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood provoked Muslims by accusing them of apostasy for not being Brotherhood loyalists and for not accepting the Brotherhood’s absolute dominance. The Brotherhood also created an enemy of Christians, the original Egyptians, for no reason. The Brotherhood did not hesitate to provoke Shiites by denying their Muslim identity and accusing them of apostasy.
