Medical researchers say they have discovered a possible “vaccine” for post-traumatic stress disorder that could protect soldiers in battle by regulating one of the body’s own hormones.

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology report in a new paper that ghrelin, a hormone produced during stressful situations, primes the brain for PTSD. They believe that by controlling ghrelin, they can also prevent the formation of PTSD after traumatic events.

GOD only know what they would really be shooting them up with. What could possibly go wrong?

Earlier DNA studies showed that Jewish communities around the world had been founded by men whose Y chromosomes bore DNA patterns typically found in the Near East. But there was a surprise when geneticists turned to examine the women founders by analyzing mitochondrial DNA, a genetic element that is separate from the main human genome and inherited just through the female line.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/09/science/ashkenazi-origins-may-be-with-european-women-study-finds.html?adxnnl=1&src=recg&adxnnlx=1382017338-qXzelawErvAeUlYrMGaszQ

Unlike the Y chromosomes, the mitochondrial DNA showed no common pattern. In several of the smaller Jewish communities it clearly resembled that of the surrounding population, suggesting a migration pattern in which the men had arrived single, perhaps as traders, and taken local wives who then converted to Judaism.

But it wasn’t clear whether or not this was true of the Ashkenazim. Mitochondrial DNA tends to change quite rapidly, or to drift, as geneticists say, and the Ashkenazi DNA has drifted so far it was hard to pinpoint its origin.

This uncertainty seemed to be resolved by a survey published in 2006. Its authors reported that the four most common mitochondrial DNA lineages among Ashkenazis came from the Near East, implying that just four Jewish women were the ancestresses of nearly half of today’s Ashkenazim. Under this scenario, it seemed more likely that the Ashkenazim were the result of a migration of whole communities of men and women together.

But decoding DNA was still quite expensive at that time and the authors of the 2006 survey analyzed only a short length of the mitochondrial DNA, containing just 1,000 or so of its 16,600 DNA units, in all their subjects.

The four mitochondrial lineages common among Ashkenazis are now very rare elsewhere in the Near East and Europe, making it hard to identify with certainty the lineages from which they originated.

AFP - A Chinese ratings agency downgraded its US sovereign credit rating Thursday despite Washington's resolution of the debt ceiling deadlock, warning that fundamentals for a potential default remained "unchanged".

Dagong lowered its ratings for US local and foreign currency credit from A to A-, maintaining a negative outlook, the agency said in a statement.

The announcement came after the US Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed a bill that extends the nation's borrowing authority and ends a two-week government shutdown.

Israel is alone. We have no diplomatic option. No matter what Israel says, no matter what it does, neither the US nor any other Western power is ever going to be convinced to take the only step that would set back Iran's nuclear program — bombing Iran's nuclear installations. No matter what, neither Obama nor any European leader will ever support an Israeli military strike on Iran's nuclear installations.

Israel's back is to the wall. That is the meaning of the talks in Geneva. If we aren't prepared to live with a nuclear armed Iran then we have to stop talking and start acting. And we need to prepare for the diplomatic hell that will break loose thereafter.

Saudi Arabia has turned down a

The Saudi foreign ministry said the UN needs to be reformed first.

It said the Security Council had failed in its duties towards Syria as well
    as in other world conflicts.

Saudi Arabia has previously expressed frustration at what it sees as an

School children in New York are likely to get two extra days off to mark the
biggest annual Muslim holidays if the city’s next mayor gets his way.

    New
York schools currently have mandatory holidays for the Christian festivals
Easter and Christmas, and the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and
    Passover.

But the school term often clashes with Islam’s biggest
festivals of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr, forcing Muslim children to choose
    between religion or study.

Democratic candidate Bill de Blasio, the
frontrunner in the race to be mayor, has told Muslim voters that New York should
    respect everyone’s faith.

“That’s why we have to respect people of Muslim
faith by providing the Eid school holidays for children in our school system,”
    he said Wednesday.

When gunmen snatched Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan from his Tripoli hotel last week, it was a rival armed militia he thanked for his rescue hours later.

Even for Libyans accustomed to their democracy's unruly beginnings, the drama at the Corinthia Hotel was a startling reminder of the power former fighters wield two years after they ousted Muammar Gaddafi, and the dangers of their rivalry.

Police and troops from Libya's nascent army were at the scene, but the former militiamen showed they are the arbiters in a struggle between rival tribal and Islamist leaders over the post-revolution spoils of the North African oil producer.

Between them, they have edged Libya close to a new war that threatens the democratic gains of the NATO-backed revolt.

    Look East policy in effect................
And analysts say China, whose Communist leaders are due to hold a key policy meeting next month, may step up a push for global acceptance of its currency, the yuan or renminbi, as an alternative to the U.S. dollar in international trade.

"They might actually consider accelerating the process," said Vincent Chan, head of equity research at Credit Suisse in Hong Kong. "You strengthen the case of making the renminbi a genuine international currency, because the Americans are unreliable."

In the eastern European nation of Georgia, a group of researchers has excavated a 1.8 million-year-old skull of an ancient human relative, whose only name right now is Skull 5. They report their findings in the journal Science, and say it belongs to our genus, called Homo.

"This is most complete early Homo skull ever found in the world," said lead study author David Lordkipanidze, researcher at the Georgian National Museum in Tbilisi.

Skull 5 is the fifth example of a hominid -- a bipedal primate mammal that walked upright -- from this time period found at the site in Dmanisi, Georgia. Stone tools and animal bones have also been recovered from the area.

A report issued in 1999 by the RAND Corporation estimates that more than 307 million tissue specimens are stored in the United States, with approximately 20 million added annually.

Conventional wisdom has been that as long as the samples are anonymous, even if the genetic information is shared publicly, the patient is protected.

Not necessarily, says Klitzman. Using current technology, some of which is easily found on the Internet, genetic information could be paired with seemingly insignificant demographic information to stitch together a person's identity.

In July 2011, the Department of Health and Human Services proposed rules to protect patients whose genetic material could be used for study, and invited public comment.

According to the notice, "...rapidly evolving advances in technology coupled with the increasing volume of data readily available may soon allow identification of an individual from data that is currently considered de-identified."

But since the notice was issued, "no resolution has been released," said Klitzman, leaving a gaping hole in protections for patients.

"Future cures will come of this," said Skloot. "But it needs to be handled in a way that protects people's privacy so people know what they're getting into when they donate. We aren't in a place where people understand what's happening."

The Muslim Brotherhood is practicing politics through a terrorist ideology, claims Nabil Metry, a member of the Executive Office of the Regional Association of Non-Governmental Organizations.

However, Metry noted that Egypt's Christian Copts are stronger than any terrorism and will remain in Egypt despite the extreme violence. Metry also noted that violence against Copts and the community increased when the Muslim Brotherhood was ousted from power.

Metry called for the deleting of Article III from Egypt's constitution, which allows Christians and Jews to resort to their own laws with regard to their personal status and choosing of their religious leaders, as well as Article 219 on interpretation of Islamic Shariah principles, according to Mideast Christian News.

He demanded to keep Article II only, which provides that "Egypt is an Islamic state, Arabic is its official language and the principles of Islamic Sharia are the main source of legislation."

He pointed out that Islamic law includes the provision for Christians and Jews to resort to their laws.

"In case of insistence on keeping Article III in the constitution, it is better to provide for non-Muslims to resort to their laws, so as not to deprive other categories of citizenship rights, such as the Baha'is," Metry said.

Edward Snowden, the source of National Security Agency leaks, has insisted that he decided to become a whistleblower and flee America because he had no faith in the internal reporting mechanisms of the US government, which he believed would have destroyed him and buried his message for ever.

One of the main criticisms levelled at Snowden by the Obama administration has been that he should have taken up an official complaint within the NSA, rather than travelling to Hong Kong to share his concerns about the agency’s data dragnet with the Guardian and other news organisations. But in an interview with the New York Times, Snowden has dismissed that option as implausible.

“The system does not work,” he said, pointing to the paradox that “you have to report wrongdoing to those most responsible for it.” If he had tried to sound the alarm internally, he would have “been discredited and ruined” and the substance of his warnings “would have been buried forever”.

The Indian Coast Guard escorted the ship with 35 members (10 crew and 25 security guards) to Tuticorin port, around 600 km from Chennai.

Officials from different security departments had questioned members of the ship as automatic rifles, bullets and other arms were found on board the vessel.

According to a marine police official, the security guards on the ship maintained that the arms were for providing security to ships, and they were waiting for further orders.

Almost one month after gunmen attacked an upscale mall in Kenya, one of them has been identified as a Norwegian-Somali, officials said Friday, as charred body parts taken from a collapsed portion of the shopping center awaited forensics analysis to determine if they were the remains of the assailants.

The suspect was identified as Hassan Abdi Dhuhulow, the first time officials have confirmed having a real name of one of possibly four attackers from the Somali militant group al-Shabab who stormed the mall on Sept. 21. Norwegian tax records show a Hassan Abdi Dhuhulow was born in 1990 and was registered at an address in Larvik, southern Norway, as late as 2009.

A former classmate of Dhuhulow's at Thor Heyerdahl High School — named after the Norwegian adventurer — said she was shocked when she found out he was a suspect in the Nairobi attack.

"The video I saw looks a lot like him. But it's difficult to see," said the former classmate, who didn't want her name to be used because she was uncomfortable being associated with a terror investigation.

"He was a quiet guy," she said. "He was very committed to his religion, but not extreme. He brought a prayer mat to school."

Larvik is a coastal town of about 40,000, tucked in between the woods and the sea, surrounded by agricultural land and close to the mountains.

Johnson led a widespread crackdown on unauthorized leaks in the Defense Department, including warning former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette that by publishing a book on the SEALs' raid that killed bin Laden, he was in "material breach" of two nondisclosure agreements he signed earlier in his career. Johnson also was involved in the investigation of retired Marine Gen. John Allen and Tampa, Fla., socialite Jill Kelley.

Johnson sparked criticism when he said in a speech at Oxford University last November that the war on terror was not an endless conflict and that the U.S. was approaching a "tipping point" after which the military fight against al-Qaida would be replaced by a law enforcement and intelligence operation.

The windows of Johnson’s office, tinted a yellowish green, are blast-resistant and designed to preclude visual surveillance.

Qaradawi is the highest-profile Sunni cleric in the Middle East. In addition to heading the influential International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS), he is a prolific author and stars in his own Sunday primetime Aljazeera show, which reaches an estimated 60 million viewers. He is also the ideological lodestar of the Muslim Brotherhood and a booster of its Palestinian terrorist chapter, Hamas. At the same time, he is an outspoken advocate of democracy and political reform.

Qaradawi’s views — on suicide bombings against Israel (which he deems legitimate), wife beating (which is permissible if ‘light’), Shiites (whom he calls ‘heretics’), and other issues — have long made him a controversial figure in Washington and the West. In the Middle East, however, he has long been viewed as a relative moderate — at least until recently, when his pronouncements became more provocative and uncharacteristically divisive. A few weeks ago, his deputy at IUMS — Mauritanian cleric Abdallah bin Bayyah — resigned his post, purportedly due to disagreements over Egypt and Syria.

Dr. Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, once a prominent member of the Muslim Brotherhood, former presidential candidate, and head of the Strong Egypt Party, spoke with Cornelis Hulsman, editor of Arab-West Report, in an interview for MEI regarding his break from the Brotherhood, Morsi’s ouster, and what he sees as necessary for Egypt’s future.

You were once a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Why did you leave the organization?

I wanted to run as an independent candidate in the presidential elections, and the Muslim Brotherhood made it obligatory for members to join the Freedom and Justice Party. I also opposed the Brotherhood’s mixing of religious and political life. The Brotherhood was established as an Islamic call and education organization that intended to change society from the grassroots level. Its biggest mistake is its involvement in politics.

This does not mean that religion should play no role in politics, but I am against a religious state. A religious state means that those ruling the country are representatives of God. A religious state creates discrimination among citizens, when they should be treated according to the rights of citizenship. Gender, race, or religion should not determine your rights. You are an Egyptian and that alone determines your rights.

Ashton also said that she is committed to making concessions to Iran as quickly as possible. In her words, “When we have been talking and in our discussions in these last days we know that we have to look for a first step, a confidencebuilding step, and we know we have to be clear about the last steps and to do that in the context of the objective overall.”

The stunning talks even included a one-on-one discussion between the chief US negotiator Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman and the Iranians.

On Thursday, Washington Post columnist David Ignatius reported that last year NATO member Turkey gave Iranian intelligence the identities of up to 10 Iranian agents working for the Mossad after they met with their Israeli case officers in Turkey. Turkey’s action was a shocking betrayal of what was supposed to be a goal it shared with Israel and the US – preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Turkey willfully harmed Israeli efforts to achieve this goal by turning in 10 Israeli agents.

Rather than taking action against Turkey, or simply acknowledging that the actions of Prime Minister Recep Erdogan represented a fundamental shift in Turkey’s strategic outlook, Obama shrugged off Turkey’s betrayal. The US didn’t even protest Turkey’s despicable deed. Instead, as Ignatius noted, “Turkish-American relations continued warming last year to the point that Erdogan was among Obama’s key confidants.”

What sort of mentality revels in seeing another human being stripped of her dignity and used as someone's sexual plaything?

I traded in my King Quad yesterday. She was a good faithful ride for me for nearly four years, but I did get the Harley Fat Boy. We had to drive over to Charlotte last night to see my daughter. It's family orientation today. The lad locked himself out of the house last night, but found refuge at a neighbors, one of his friends homes. I jumpt in the wife's car around 4:30 this morning and hauled ass back home. Another couple is visiting with their daughter, so Connie has a ride home. I am on a plane tomorrow morning, so I figured I'd wait until Friday next week to take delivery of the Harley. I did get a few shots yesterday though.
