Great King Rat

Make models of the
tumors and of the rats
that are destroying the country,
and give glory to Israel’s god.
Perhaps he will lift his hand

and your land.

Rat kings are phenomena said to arise when a number of rats become intertwined at their tails, which become stuck together with blood, dirt, ice, excrement or simply knotted. The animals reputedly grow together while joined at the tails. The numbers of rats that are joined together can vary, but rat kings formed naturally from a large number of rats are rarer. The phenomenon is particularly associated with Germany, where the majority of instances have been reported. Historically, there are various superstitions surrounding rat kings, and they were often seen as a bad omen, particularly associated with plagues.

Pessimism is not in being tired of evil but in being tired of good. Despair does not lie in being weary of suffering, but in being weary of joy. It is when for some reason or other the good things in a society no longer work that the society begins to decline; when its food does not feed, when its cures do not cure, when its blessings refuse to bless.
    Chesterton again.

  14. Alas, in the world beyond the penthouse of the Waldorf Towers, it's harder to tell whom the A-list invites should go to: From Afghanistan to Egypt, a debt-ridden America bankrolls its own eclipse, betraying friends, promoting enemies, despised by both. In the dog days of summer, the new national-security adviser tweets it in from her pad in the Hamptons or wherever, even as the hyperpower readies for its next unwon war: After America's slo-mo defeat in the Hindu Kush, and its ineffectual leading-from-behind in Libya, and its thwarted Muslim Brotherhood outreach in Cairo, Obama is confidently dispatching the gunboats to Syria. If you're Bashar Assad, you must be as befuddled as that Zurich handbag clerk: Hillary hailed you as a "reformer"; no senatorial frequent flyer courted you more assiduously than John Kerry; the guys trying to depose you hate the Great Satan far more than you do, and are the local branch office of the fellows who turned lower Manhattan into a big smoking hole. Yet Washington is readying to take you out — or at any rate, in George W. Bush's unimprovable summation of desultory Clinton-style warmongering, readying to fire a $2 million cruise missile through a tent and hit a camel in the butt. The only novelty with this latest of ineptly rattled sabers is whether Tsar Putin will stand by and let Obama knock off a Russian client.*

Putin, Assad, General Sisi in Cairo, and many others think they have the measure of Obama, Kerry, and Rice. Poor deluded fools. If only, like Mia, they could see them through blue-tinted glasses . . .

*I wrote this piece for the last issue of National Review. Re Putin, we now know the answer.

Thirteen people, including a 3-year-old boy who suffered a gunshot wound to the head, were shot at a Chicago park in the Back of the Yards neighborhood Thursday night, authorities said.

Ten adults and the 3-year-old were transported by Fire Department ambulances after the attack in the 1800 block of West 51st Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, said Fire Department Deputy District Chief James Mungovan at the scene. A 12th victim was believed to have driven himself to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, a source said, citing preliminary information.

Police said later a total of 13 people were shot, the boy, two teens, and 10 adults, with the boy the most seriously wounded. The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the head at an ear that exited through his mouth, and was in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

Four bikies, believed to be from the new gang Soldiers of Islam, have been arrested after a wild brawl at Mermaid Tavern this afternoon.

Soldiers of Islam, also known as Sons of Islam, is believed to be an offshoot of outlaw bikie gang the Bandidos, which has a clubhouse at Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast.

Sources say the gang, comprising young Muslim men who sport “SOI” tattoos, has sprung up on the Glitter Strip in recent years.

Soldiers of Islam appears to be made up of former Iraqi soldiers which is one of those benefits of welcoming immigrants from broken parts of the world.

A police officer at Modesto Junior College in California told a patriotic libertarian student that it was against college rules for him to hand out copies of the U.S. Constitution on campus. Ironically, this flagrant violation of the student’s Constitutional rights took place on September 17th: Constitution Day. The exchange between student Robert Van Tuinen and a campus police officer was captured on video. Tuinen told the officer that he wished to start a Young Americans for Liberty chapter on campus, and hoped that passing out copies of the Constitution would generate interest in that. The officer, however, maintained that Van Tuinen was not allowed to distribute flyers without college authorization. …The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects the right of people to exercise free speech and peaceably assemble in public places. Nevertheless, the officer brought Van Tuinen to the Student Development office, where administrator Christine Serrano told him that he could only hand out flyers while inside a “free speech zone” on campus. The zone is a sad little circle of cement. It only fits two people, and was booked for days. When Van Tuinen insisted that he had a First Amendment right to hand out flyers wherever he pleased, Serrano told him, “You really don’t need to keep going on.” - See more at: http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2013/09/campus-cops-stop-libertarian-student-from-handing-out-copies-of-constitution-on-constitution-day/#sthash.WcgCqTWu.dpuf

If you go Russian waters and trespass and oil well you get what you deserve...enjoy the Russian prison..............A day earlier, two activists were arrested following an attempt to board an offshore drilling platform belonging to state natural gas company Gazprom.

The Coast Guard is part of the Federal Security Service (FSB), the main successor agency to the Soviet-era KGB.

Liliya Moroz, a representative of the FSB in Murmansk region, told Ekho Moskvy radio on Friday that the charges against the activists may include terrorism.

Under Russian law, terrorism is any action aimed at "violating general safety, frightening the public or influencing government action" that damages property or threatens the lives of others in the process. It carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison if the person was unarmed.

Greenpeace said they had been unable to make contact with the activists since late on Thursday and had not yet received official confirmation of these charges from the security services, but said that this was the first detention of a boat and its activists in Russian waters for nearly two decades.

Critical thinking can be seen as having two components:

    1) a set of information and belief generating and processing skills, and

    2) the habit, based on intellectual commitment, of using those skills to guide behavior.

It is thus to be contrasted with:

    1) the mere acquisition and retention of information alone, because it involves a particular way in which information is sought and treated;

    2) the mere possession of a set of skills, because it involves the continual use of them; and

    3) the mere use of those skills ("as an exercise") without acceptance of their results.

Police say witnesses saw two men buying spray paint at a nearby store Wednesday night. They walked out and defaced the statue, and then tagged construction equipment, a building, city utility box, signs, and a Metro bus they boarded to leave the area.

The bus driver snapped a few pictures and called police. Before officers arrived, the vandals tagged more buildings downtown.

And the riot squad they're restless
    They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
    From Desolation Row.

    Cinderella, she seems so easy
"It takes one to know one," she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
    Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he's moaning
"You belong to Me I Believe"
And someone says, "You're in the wrong place, my friend
    You better leave"
And the only sound that's left
    After the ambulances go
    Is Cinderella sweeping up
    On Desolation Row.

Now the moon is almost hidden
The stars are beginning to hide
    The fortunetelling lady
Has even taken all her things inside
All except for Cain and Abel
And the hunchback of Notre Dame
    Everybody is making love
    Or else expecting rain
And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing
He's getting ready for the show
He's going to the carnival tonight
    On Desolation Row.
Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
    On her twenty-second birthday
She already is an old maid
To her, death is quite romantic
    She wears an iron vest
    Her profession's her religion
    Her sin is her lifelessness
And though her eyes are fixed upon
    Noah's great rainbow
    She spends her time peeking
    Into Desolation Row.

    Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood
With his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago
With his friend, a jealous monk
    He looked so immaculately frightful
    As he bummed a cigarette
Then he went off sniffing drainpipes
    And reciting the alphabet
You would not think to look at him
But he was famous long ago
    For playing the electric violin
    On Desolation Row.

Dr. Filth, he keeps his world
    Inside of a leather cup
    But all his sexless patients
They're trying to blow it up
Now his nurse, some local loser
She's in charge of the cyanide hole
And she also keeps the cards that read
    "Have Mercy on His Soul"
They all play on penny whistles
    You can hear them blow
If you lean your head out far enough
    From Desolation Row.
Across the street they've nailed the curtains
They're getting ready for the feast
    The Phantom of the Opera
In a perfect image of a priest
    They're spoonfeeding Casanova
To get him to feel more assured
Then they'll kill him with self-confidence
    After poisoning him with words
And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls
"Get outa here if you don't know"
Casanova is just being punished for going
    To Desolation Row.

    At midnight all the agents
    And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory
    Where the heart-attack machine
    Is strapped across their shoulders
    And then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles
    By insurance men who go
Check to see that nobody is escaping
    To Desolation Row.

    They be to Nero's Neptune
    The Titanic sails at dawn
    Everybody's shouting
"Which side are you on ?"
And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot
    Fighting in the captain's tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
    And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
    Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much
    About Desolation Row.
Yes, I received your letter yesterday
About the time the door knob broke
When you asked me how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke ?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they're quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And give them all another name
Right now I can't read too good
Dont send me no more letters no
    Not unless you mail them
    From Desolation Row.

You went out on the street without your shoes on
You didn't listen what your momma said
She said you won't feel the benefit, won't feel the benefit
And if we all went out without our shoes on
Tell me where would we be, where would we be

If all the people in the world lost their reason
What would we see, where would we be
If all the entertainers in the world lost their music
What would they play, what could they say
To pacify the crowd, to justify themselves
    Won't feel the benefit

You're like a cloud behind the sun
Like the face behind the clown
You're moving like the wrinkles in a frown
And you can never look back
A leaf that's borne upon the wind
A cardboard suitcase in your hand
    The wanderer soon returns
And finds the colour of the grass is just the same
On the other side of the tracks, oh no

Ooh when you smile it's like a holiday
Ooh pack your bags and we can get away
We'll float on a Queen down to Rio
    There's no need to shave
We'll be stinking like rum in a punch

You can walk on the water
You can dabble in the mumbo jumbo
You can smoke a little ganja
Float like a cloud over Rio, Rio
You can ride with the Gauchos
Swinging your bolas in a red bandana
You can run with the devil
    Takin' your chances with Senorita

You can drink a lot of coffee in Brazil
But the bill is gonna make you ill

    FEEL THE BENEFIT

So, you can go out on the street and take your chances
But if you do, you better do it right
Or you won't feel the benefit, won't feel the benefit
Spin the wheel and take your chances
And your number might come up
Though the odds may be in favor of the house

If all the people in the world would say together
We're all black and white, we're all day and night
If all the people in the world could sing together
How would it sound, what would we feel

    We'd all feel the benefit

Last week, China's Supreme Court warned that anyone spreading a rumour on the internet faces three years in prison if more than 5,000 people see it, or if it gets reposted more than 500 times.

    snip

His identity has not been disclosed, but the Beijing Times quoted a man, named Yang, saying police took away his 16-year-old son on Tuesday on charges of "picking quarrels and provoking troubles".

According to a statement from the county government in Zhangjiachuan, Gansu province, the boy questioned a police investigation that concluded a local karaoke bar manager had committed suicide by jumping from a building.

The boy said the man had been beaten up after a quarrel and accused the police of failing to investigate fully. His accusation quickly went viral, provoking the wrath of the local government.

Though the drug is not federally approved to treat insomnia, some doctors prescribe it for this and other "off-label" uses.
About 10 months after she began taking Seroquel, Patteson experienced weakness in her legs and difficulty walking. In early 2008, her doctors concluded that she had tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder characterized by repetitive, involuntary movements and uncontrollable muscular tics.

Catherine Brahic: Tell us what you are doing in North Korea.

James Hammond: I'm part of a joint project with North Korean scientists to understand the Mount Paektu volcano, on the border of North Korea and China. Its last eruption 1,000 years ago was one of the largest in human history. The whole top of the volcano blew off. There are still tens of meters of rock and ash deposits. In the early 2000s, it showed signs of life—an increase in earthquakes was recorded and some signs of inflation.

CB: You mean the volcano's sides were bulging?

JH: Exactly. These were signs it wasn't as dormant as we thought. That piqued everyone's interest. With its history, it's quite a worrying volcano.

CB: What do we know about the last eruption?

JH: The exact size of the last eruption is not well-characterized. Chinese scientists have worked on it a lot in the last 15 years, but before that there were only a few studies. The only eruption we can compare it to is Mount Tambora in Indonesia in 1815, after which the world had a year without summer. It looks like Mount Paektu didn't have a similar effect, but we don't know why. These are the big questions that we hope to understand.

US nearly detonated atomic bomb by accident in 1961
    http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/09/21/us-nearly-detonated-atomic-bomb-by-accident-in-161-file/
The US Air Force came dramatically close to detonating a huge atomic bomb over North Carolina in 1961, according to a newly declassified document published by Britain's Guardian newspaper on Saturday.

Two hydrogen bombs were accidentally dropped over the city of Goldsboro, North Carolina on January 23, 1961 when the B-52 plane carrying them broke up in mid-air, according to the file.

One of the bombs began to detonate -- a single switch was all that stopped it from doing so. The three other safety mechanisms designed to prevent an unintended detonation failed.

The Democratic Party of Sacramento County, California scrambled on Friday to deal with fallout from a series of tweets its communications chair sent Friday, in which he wished the children of a speechwriter in the office of Sen. Ted Cruz would endure a painful death.

  176. Good morning all. Its the road for me today. I believe we will be in Bend, OR tonight. Looks like the weather is going to be cool and wet, but that is ok for driving down I5, which is boring but has to be done if you want to go to OR quickly. This trip I can peek in and make smart ashed remarks when there is wifi. Pray for me if you like. Its a lot of driving and you never know what you will come upon out there.
So, shalom. Happy sukkot and all if anybody is doing the thing.

Students in Randolph County, North Carolina won’t have access to “Invisible Man.”

That county’s board of education voted 5-2 this week to remove all copies of the Ralph Ellison novel from school libraries, following a parental complaint about the book’s content and language when it was assigned as summer reading in local Randleman High School. “It was a hard read,” said board chair Tommy McDonald, who voted in favor of the ban.

Another board member said, “I didn’t find any literary value.”
