George Zimmerman, who has been in hiding since he was acquitted of murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, emerged to help rescue a family who was trapped in an overturned vehicle, police said today.

Zimmerman was one of two men who came to the aid of a family of four -- two parents and two children -- trapped inside a blue Ford Explorer SUV that had rolled over after traveling off the highway in Sanford, Fla. at approximately 5:45 p.m. Thursday, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The crash occurred at the intersection of I-4 and route Route 46, police said. The crash site is less than a mile from where Zimmerman shot Martin.

By the time police arrived, two people - including Zimmerman - had already helped the family get out of the overturned car, the sheriff's office said. No one was reported to be injured.

Zimmerman was not a witness to the crash and left after speaking with the deputy, police said.

“What if George hadn’t gotten out of his truck?”

That’s the question Shawn Vincent, a spokesman for George Zimmerman, posed to The Daily Caller after news broke Monday that Zimmerman helped rescue a family of four from an overturned car.

“That’s the kind of guy George is,” Vincent said during a phone interview with TheDC.

    Patty Pan Squash Quesadillas Recipe

    Olga Berman-MangoTomato.Com

(Sounds yummy! I wonder if those chayote squashes would work?)

Is it as sweltering hot where you live as it is in DC? It feels like it's 100 degrees here! I cannot wait till the fall cool air comes...but I'll be waiting for a while.

In the meantime, I'm cooking lighter meals that don't require a lot of time or heat or baking. This Patty Pan Squash Quesadillas recipe is one of my favorites.

It all started when I made Patty Pan Squash Succotash with a Poached Egg. I had half the succotash mixture left over and decided to make a quesadilla with it. But I'll retype the full recipe for you :) Do you feel the ♥?

Egyptian security and armed forces arrested nine alleged terrorists in the Sinai desert operating under the command of al-Qaeda leader Ramzy Mowafy, Egypt’s Al-Ahram reported.

Subway Employee Admits To Touching Bread With Penis, Says Photo Was Taken At Home

If the Taco Bell taco-licker wasn’t enough to put you off fast food for a while, now comes a photo posted by a Subway employee of a man touching a loaf of dough with his penis. But not to worry because the employee says this was done in the privacy of his own home.

A tipster sent the photo, along with others, including a bottle of what is alleged to be frozen urine, to Huffington Post’s Weird News. The images had been placed on the Instagram and Twitter accounts of other employees at the store in Columbus, OH.

The photo of the penis touching the bread had a caption with the employee’s name, saying “I will be your sandwich artist today.”

Druze Family Restores Family Honour By Cutting Sunni Muslims Pecker Off

“They cut it off to set an example.”

Ahmad deceived them in the old fashioned Mohammedan way. He told them he was a Druse, but when they found out he was a sunni deceiver they made sure he learned his lesson:

The victim, 39-year-old Rabih Ahmad told Al-Jadeed TV that the attackers were his wife’s father and brother, adding “they cut it off to set an example.”

Obama say “if I had a son he would look like Rabih Ahmad”

Ahmad met Rudayna Melaab, 19, on Facebook, according to An Nahar. The two eloped earlier this month and were married by a Sunni sheikh in keeping with the groom’s faith.

Tthe woman’s relatives, led by her brother, who is reportedly a soldier in the Lebanese Army, kidnapped Melaab and dragged Ahmad to the main square of Baysour where they beat him and cut off his penis. According to local news reports, Ahmad arrived at the hospital in critical condition, his penis missing and his testicles ruptured.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s food police have struck again!

Outlawed are food donations to homeless shelters because the city can’t assess their salt, fat and fiber content, reports CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer.

Glenn Richter arrived at a West Side synagogue on Monday to collect surplus bagels — fresh nutritious bagels — to donate to the poor. However, under a new edict from Bloomberg’s food police he can no longer donate the food to city homeless shelters.

It’s the “no bagels for you” edict.

Kerry Must End the ‘Israel-is-to-Blame’ Game

JNS.org – Which aspect of Secretary of State John Kerry’s repetition of the Arab position last week, that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict lies at the root of Middle Eastern instability, is more remarkable? The fact that Kerry could actually say such a thing, or the fact that, with the exception of theWeekly Standard, such an extraordinary claim could pass almost unnoticed in a media landscape that is rarely short of opinions about the region?

    http://www.algemeiner.com/2013/07/23/kerry-must-end-the-%E2%80%98israel-is-to-blame%E2%80%99-game/

After talks in Amman with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh and his colleagues, Kerry waxed lyrically as follows: “Peace is in the common interest of everybody in this region. And as many ministers said to me today in the meeting that we had—many of them—they said that the core issue of instability in this region and in many other parts of the world is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.”

Think, for a moment, about that clause “in this region and in many other parts of the world…” During a week in which the total number of deaths accumulated during the civil war in Syria approached 93,000, there is something almost obscene about depicting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as the source of regional instability.

During a SOFREP radio interview with myself and Brandon Webb, the topic came up about sniper rifles. Brandon mentioned the Blaser R93 LRS2 sniper rifle after I stated that I am getting a custom sniper rifle built (.308 on a Rock Solid Stock). Not fully recognizing what he had just said until much later, I had to do this review of such an awesome sniper rifle. Not only does this weapon look amazing, its features, manufacturing, accuracy, weight, etc., are all great. Here is a basic breakdown of the rifle and what I think about it.

    The M40A5 Sniper Rifle!

For those of you who are interested in long-range precision/sniping and are thinking about purchasing a sniper rifle, I would like to introduce to you one of my favorite rifles, the M40A5.

There’s a plethora of rifles on the market that we can choose from, but for the most of us, they can be out of our price range, especially if you’re just getting into the long-range precision hobby. The M40A5 or any M40 variant can not only fit most of our price ranges, but it is also has excellent accuracy. For those of you that don’t know, I am a huge fan of the M40 and M24 .308. This was the first sniper rifle that I was issued in Ranger Battalion, deployed with, attended multiple schools with, and also used this weapon system in the International Sniper Competition where my spotter and I placed top 5. In order to get a good grasp on ballistics, wind, etc., I feel that you should start off with the .308 (168 – 175 gr HPBT). There’s nothing like consistently engaging a target (IPSC) at 1000 yards with the .308, you have fully applied all the correct fundamentals and you truly understood the wind and the ballistics of that round, especially when considering the fact that the .308 was designed to be an 800 meter round, after that your encountering transonic issues depending on the environmentals.

    http://loadoutroom.com/5814/the-m40a5-sniper-rifle/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheLoadoutRoom+%28The+Loadout+Room%29

It was a truly ingenious profit-making scheme, involving sophisticated arbitrage of complex global regulations, all of which resulted in lots of money for banks, and higher prices for companies and consumers.

Bayer and Bachynski examined bans on smoking in public. These bans began took off in the late 1970s and now include more than 840 parks and 150 beaches across the United States alone, according to the American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation. California has bans in 155 parks and on 46 beaches; Minnesota, 118 parks and 25 beaches and New Jersey, 83 parks and 18 beaches. France, Australia and New Zealand have enacted bans as well.

In getting these bans enacted three justifications were used: Smoking on beaches and in parks posed a health hazard to nonsmokers, especially children; cigarette butts were toxic to humans and animals and constituted an unacceptable form of litter; and public smoking by adults provided a dangerous model that threatened the future well-being of children and adolescents.

The problem is that the scientific evidence supporting each of these arguments is exceedingly weak.

    Prosecuting Snowden

I generally don't like stories about Snowden as a person, because they distract from the real story of the NSA surveillance programs, but this article on the costs and benefits of the US government prosecuting Edward Snowden is worth reading.

Additional concerns relate to the trial. Snowden would no doubt obtain high-powered lawyers. Protesters would ring the courthouse. Journalists would camp out inside. As proceedings dragged on for months, the spotlight would remain on the N.S.A.’s spying and the administration’s pursuit of leakers. Instead of fading into obscurity, the Snowden affair would continue to grab headlines, and thus to undermine the White House’s ability to shape political discourse.

A trial could turn out to be much more than a distraction: It could be a focal point for domestic and international outrage. From the executive branch’s institutional perspective, the greatest danger posed by the Snowden case is not to any particular program. It is to the credibility of the secrecy system, and at one remove the ideal of our government as a force for good.

    [...]

More broadly, Snowden’s case may clash with certain foreign policy goals. The United States often wants other countries’ dissidents to be able to find refuge abroad; this is a longstanding plank of its human rights agenda. The United States also wants illiberal regimes to tolerate online expression that challenges their authority; this is the core of its developing Internet freedom agenda.

Snowden’s prosecution may limit our soft power to lead and persuade in these areas. Of course, U.S. officials could emphasize that Snowden is different, that he’s not a courageous activist but a reckless criminal. But that is what the repressive governments say about their prisoners, too.

The term "terrorist" is surprisingly broad; since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, it has been applied to people you wouldn't normally consider terrorists.

An unprecedented federal review of old criminal cases has uncovered as many as 27 death penalty convictions in which FBI forensic experts may have mistakenly linked defendants to crimes with exaggerated scientific testimony, U.S. officials said.

The review led to an 11th-hour stay of execution in Mississippi in May.

It is not known how many of the cases involve errors, how many led to wrongful convictions or how many mistakes may now jeopardize valid convictions. Those questions will be explored as the review continues.

NEW YORK (AP) - Dennis Farina, a onetime Chicago cop who as a popular actor played a cop on "Law & Order," has died. Farina died Monday morning in a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital after suffering a blood clot in his lung, according to his publicist, Lori De Waal. He was 69. For three decades, Farina was a character actor who displayed remarkable dexterity, charm and, when called for, toughness, making effective use of his craggy face, steel-gray hair, ivory smile and ample mustache. Farina appeared in films including "Get Shorty," ''Saving Private Ryan," ''Midnight Run" and "Out Of Sight." Among his many TV portrayals was Detective Joe Fontana on "Law & Order" during the 2004-06 seasons. He starred in the 1980s cult favorite "Crime Story" and was a regular in the 2011-12 HBO drama "Luck." He recently completed shooting a comedy, "Lucky Stiff." - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/orangecounty/obituary.aspx?n=dennis-farina&pid=165984653#fbLoggedOut

We’re Americans. We’re not supposed to care about the royal family. We’re not supposed to worship masters based on an accident of birth. But Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is on the verge of having a baby and we react as if a ten-story Moses appeared towering over the Washington Monument.

Donkey Bomb Attack Kills 3 U.S. Troops

Three American service members were killed this morning in a suicide attack carried out by a man on a donkey, according to NATO and Afghan officials.

The attack happened this morning in the Sayedabad district of Wardak province. Afghan officials say a suicide bomber riding a donkey approached a joint patrol of U.S. and Afghan soldiers, and detonated as he approached troops.

NATO isn’t confirming the nationalities of the troops, but a senior Afghan official tells ABC News they were American.

The NSA is a “supercomputing powerhouse” with machines so powerful their speed is measured in thousands of trillions of operations per second. The agency turns its giant machine brains to the task of sifting through unimaginably large troves of data its surveillance programs capture.

But ask the NSA, as part of a freedom of information request, to do a seemingly simple search of its own employees’ email? The agency says it doesn’t have the technology.

“There’s no central method to search an email at this time with the way our records are set up, unfortunately,” NSA Freedom of Information Act officer Cindy Blacker told me last week.

The system is “a little antiquated and archaic,” she added.

    Alfred Korzybski (1879-1950)

How is it that humans have progressed so rapidly in science, mathematics, and engineering, yet we continue to exhibit behaviors that result in misunderstanding, suspicion, bigotry, hatred, and even violence in our dealings with other people and with other cultures?

    http://www.generalsemantics.org/the-general-semantics-learning-center/alfred-korzybski/

    ReplyDelete
  146. BabbaZee4:07 PM

Alfred Korzybski pursued this question as an engineer, military officer, and extraordinary observer of human behavior. He survived the horrific battlegrounds of World War I and wondered why humans could progress and advance in some areas, but not in others. He theorized that the attitudes and methodologies responsible for advancements in engineering, the sciences, and mathematics could be applied to the daily affairs of individuals, and ultimately cultures. He called this new field “general semantics” and introduced it as a practical, teachable system in his 1933 book, Science and Sanity.

"The man of delusion cannot see the One hidden in all. He sees only the diversity and the multiplicity of the life and the world around him. Feeling lonely and isolated, unable to trust others and the world he lives in, as if the world is an enemy determined to subdue him and destroy him, he suffers from intense anxiety about himself and his future. Because of the sense of duality he loses his unified vision and sees the world in terms of pairs, divisions, groups, categories, numbers and opposites, and in short, in terms of relative and subjective reality." —Jayaram V

“When we say ‘our rulers’, we mean those who are engaged in the manipulation of symbols. We must consider ourselves a symbolic, semantic class of life, and cannot cease from being so… those who control the symbols rule us.

Bankers, priests, lawyers,… politicians, [and news media] constitute one class [of our rulers] and work together. They do not produce any values but manipulate the values produced by others, and often pass signs for no value at all. Scientists and teachers also comprise a ruling class. They produce the main values mankind has, but, at present, they do not realize this. They are, in the main, ruled by the cunning methods of the first class.”

Korzybski's work maintained that human beings are limited in what they know by (1) the structure of their nervous systems, and (2) the structure of their languages. Human beings cannot experience the world directly, but only through their "abstractions" (nonverbal impressions or "gleanings" derived from the nervous system, and verbal indicators expressed and derived from language). Sometimes our perceptions and our languages actually mislead us as to the "facts" with which we must deal. Our understanding of what is happening sometimes lacks similarity of structure with what is actually happening.

He stressed training in awareness of abstracting, using techniques that he had derived from his study of mathematics and science. He called this awareness, this goal of his system, "consciousness of abstracting".

His system included modifying the way we consider the world, e.g., with an attitude of "I don't know; let's see," to better discover or reflect its realities as revealed by modern science. One of these techniques involved becoming inwardly and outwardly quiet, an experience that he termed, "silence on the objective levels".

I've mostly given up on making "worldly" sense out of anything. Korzybski certainly provides a refreshing view, but I don't believe there is a single keystone,—human doctrine or dogma, that ties the eternal to the finite. Yet, the seemingly paradoxical are always united on a sublime level. The one thing that I have come to recognize is that the countless, fruitless, tyrannical efforts of men to codify human will and universalize local mores enfold all human discord. What greater service can we do for God than to love one another,—abide and let abide? What greater service can we do for mankind than to promote and defend the concept of Liberty, wherein we only allow ourselves and our actions to be governed purely by Love? The sublime Truth, which leads us to the One Most High, is the simple realization that All is united in eternal Love. Remember what the Rabbi said,"...the rainbow simultaneously reminds us to repent from the relentless pursuit of multiplicity drawing us away from God. It urges us to direct the full spectrum of our powers and interests over the rainbow to the One on High."

"The pictures conceal more than they reveal. They don't penetrate the depths, where all contradictions correspond with one another." —Franz Kafka
