A Fish On Land

The fish in the Nile died,
and the river smelled so bad
that the Egyptians
could not drink its water.
Blood was everywhere in Egypt

A Texas plot to assassinate leaders from the Occupy Wall Street movement hasn’t even merited a mention on the nightly news. But details are slowly leaking out about the illegal program showing that the FBI isn’t just aware of the campaign to murder US political leaders, they may actually be sheltering and funding it.

She saw them running towards her as she approached Cairo’s Tahrir Square and within seconds she was surrounded.

What followed for Yasmine El-Baramawy was the most terrifying 70 minutes of her life – a prolonged, brutal rape and sexual assault by dozens of men, while a crowd looked on. And did nothing.

In Secret, Court Vastly Broadens Powers of N.S.A.

In more than a dozen classified rulings, the nation’s surveillance court has created a secret body of law giving the National Security Agency the power to amass vast collections of data on Americans while pursuing not only terrorism suspects, but also people possibly involved in nuclear proliferation, espionage and cyberattacks, officials say.

The rulings, some nearly 100 pages long, reveal that the court has taken on a much more expansive role by regularly assessing broad constitutional questions and establishing important judicial precedents, with almost no public scrutiny, according to current and former officials familiar with the court’s classified decisions.

The 11-member Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, known as the FISA court, was once mostly focused on approving case-by-case wiretapping orders. But since major changes in legislation and greater judicial oversight of intelligence operations were instituted six years ago, it has quietly become almost a parallel Supreme Court, serving as the ultimate arbiter on surveillance issues and delivering opinions that will most likely shape intelligence practices for years to come, the officials said.

Last month, a former National Security Agency contractor, Edward J. Snowden, leaked a classified order from the FISA court, which authorized the collection of all phone-tracing data from Verizon business customers. But the court’s still-secret decisions go far beyond any single surveillance order, the officials said.

“We’ve seen a growing body of law from the court,” a former intelligence official said. “What you have is a common law that develops where the court is issuing orders involving particular types of surveillance, particular types of targets.”

In one of the court’s most important decisions, the judges have expanded the use in terrorism cases of a legal principle known as the “special needs” doctrine and carved out an exception to the Fourth Amendment’s requirement of a warrant for searches and seizures, the officials said.

The special needs doctrine was originally established in 1989 by the Supreme Court in a ruling allowing the drug testing of railway workers, finding that a minimal intrusion on privacy was justified by the government’s need to combat an overriding public danger. Applying that concept more broadly, the FISA judges have ruled that the N.S.A.’s collection and examination of Americans’ communications data to track possible terrorists does not run afoul of the Fourth Amendment, the officials said.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/06/ali-ahmed-egypt-excoriates-muslim-brotherhood-video_n_3555093.html

In a video interview with Egyptian news outlet El Wady, first grader Ali Ahmed delivers an incredibly precocious condemnation of the Muslim Brotherhood that will leave you speechless.

Touching on topics like Egypt's wealth inequality, lack of rights for women, and oversize influence of religion on politics, Ahmed's articulate censure of the Egyptian government -- although filmed back in October -- is more apt now than ever, as the military removed Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi from power on Wednesday, just one year after he was elected to office.

While some Reddit commenters have questioned whether the interview was improperly translated or may have been staged, Arabic-speaking commenters say the translation is accurate, and the boy's evident passion in speaking suggests his tirade was not scripted.

Reggie Walton is the Presiding Judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, whose 11 members are appointed directly by the chief justice of the Supreme Court. Revelations of broad spying by the National Security Agency have drawn unusual attention to the Court, which the New York Times reported Sunday “has created a secret body of law giving the National Security Agency the power
to amass vast collections of data.”

The first IVF baby to be screened using a procedure that can read every letter of the human genome has been born in the US.

Connor Levy was born on 18 May after a Philadelphia couple had cells from their IVF embryos sent to specialists in Oxford, who checked them for genetic abnormalities. The process helped doctors at the couple's fertility clinic in the US select embryos with the right number of chromosomes. These have a much higher chance of leading to a healthy baby.

In the annals of political correctness run amok in American schools, this story — if true — is easily an all-timer.

A junior-high school Spanish teacher has filed a lawsuit alleging that she was fired from P.S. 211 in the Bronx in March 2012 because of a misunderstanding over the word “negro.”

The non-tenured teacher, 65-year-old Petrona Smith, maintains that she was instructing her class about how to say the various basic colors in Spanish, reports the New York Post. The word “negro” naturally came up because “negro” is the Spanish word for “black.”

  40. Female inmates sterilized in California prisons without approval

    Read more here: http://www.sacbee.com/2013/07/07/5549696/female-inmates-sterilized-in-california.html#storylink=cpy

Doctors under contract with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation sterilized nearly 150 female inmates from 2006 to 2010 without required state approvals, the Center for Investigative Reporting has found.

At least 148 women received tubal ligations in violation of prison rules during those five years – and there are perhaps 100 more dating back to the late 1990s, according to state documents and interviews.

From 1997 to 2010, the state paid doctors $147,460 to perform the procedure, according to a database of contracted medical services for state prisoners.

The women were signed up for the surgery while they were pregnant and housed at either the California Institution for Women in Corona or Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla, which is now a men's prison.

Former inmates and prisoner advocates maintain that prison medical staff coerced the women, targeting those deemed likely to return to prison in the future.

On the night of January 24, 2006, Baucum called Culosi and arranged a time to drop by to collect his winnings. When Culosi, barefoot and clad in a T-shirt and jeans, stepped out of his house to meet the man he thought was a friend, the SWAT team began to move in. Seconds later, Det. Deval Bullock, who had been on duty since 4:00 AM and hadn’t slept in seventeen hours, fired a bullet that pierced Culosi’s heart.

Sal Culosi’s last words were to Baucum, the cop he thought was a friend: “Dude, what are you doing?”

  47. In 2007 a Dallas SWAT team actually raided a Veterans of Foreign Wars outpost for hosting charity poker games. Players said the tactics were terrifying. One woman urinated on herself. When police raided a San Mateo, California, poker game in 2008, card players described cops storming the place “in full riot gear” and “with guns drawn.” The games had buy-ins ranging from $25 to $55. Under California law, the games were legal so long as no one took a “rake,” or a cut of the stakes. No one had, but police claimed the $5 the hosts charged players to buy refreshments qualified as a rake. In March 2007, a small army of local cops, ATF agents, National Guard troops, and a helicopter raided a poker game in Cary, North Carolina. They issued forty-one citations, all of them misdemeanors. A columnist at the Fayetteville Observer remarked, “They were there to play cards, not to foment rebellion. . . . [I] wonder . . . what other minutiae, personal vices and petty crimes are occupying [the National Guard’s] time, and where they’re occupying it. . . . Until we get this sorted out, better not jaywalk. There could be a military helicopter overhead.”

  49. By the end of the decade, state and local SWAT teams were regularly being used not only for raids on poker games and gambling operations but also for immigration raids (on both businesses and private homes) and raids on massage parlors, cat houses, and unlicensed strip clubs. Today the sorts of offenses that can subject a citizen to the SWAT treatment defy caricature. If the government wants to make an example of you by pounding you with a wholly disproportionate use of force, it can. It’s rare that courts or politicians even object, much less impose consequences.

  50. In 2010 a massive Maricopa County SWAT team, including a tank and several armored vehicles, raided the home of Jesus Llovera. The tank in fact drove straight into Llovera’s living room. Driving the tank? Action movie star Steven Seagal, whom Sheriff Joe Arpaio had recently deputized. Seagal had also been putting on the camouflage to help Arpaio with his controversial immigration raids. All of this, by the way, was getting caught on film. Seagal’s adventures in Maricopa County would make up the next season of the A&E TV series Steven Seagal, Lawman.
Llovera’s suspected crime? Cockfighting. Critics said that Arpaio and Seagal brought an army to arrest a man suspected of fighting chickens to play for the cameras. Seagal’s explanation for the show of force: “Animal cruelty is one of my pet peeves.” All of Llovera’s chickens were euthanized. During the raid, the police also killed his dog.

    Five years ago today (2008?)

Nearly every part of US gov is "involved in monitoring or surveillance." As Congress prepares new guidelines for the NSA's domestic spying program, US lawmakers are leaving untouched a wide array of government programs which also perform surveillance on Americans.

SoCal surfside town to become America's first unwired city? (2003?)

Wifi's up: L.A. area beach town Hermosa Beach may become the first U.S. city to be unwired by its own municipal government. Totally bitchin', dude.

Imagine living in a town where you're able to move your laptop from one place to the next without ever having to log off from cyberspace. You can leave a coffee shop, travel down to the beach and then over to a park, all the while still surfing the Internet, free of charge. Hermosa Beach just might be that city if a proposal led by Mayor Michael Keegan to make the tiny beach community completely wireless comes to fruition. The completed plan would make Hermosa Beach famous as the first Wi-Fi city in the United States.

Buddy Holly vs Sullivan: Oh Boy as speed-metal

Charlie sez, "Ed Sullivan didn't want Buddy Holly to perform Oh Boy! on his show. He wanted a ballad. Holly refused to obey. This performance is poetic justice in regards to how awesome Buddy Holly was. Buddy was one of the few defiant rock acts at the time to get into an artistic scuffle with Ed. Sullivan mispronounces a rock legend's name, cuts his guitar line by 50% and Buddy begins screaming his lyrics, checking volume and goes into a 50's speed metal chorus while banging his head in energetic defiance with the hard drum beat. His show was so electric that Sullivan was forced to invite Buddy back. Buddy declined."

    Milford CT:
    http://www.ctpost.com/local/article/White-supremacist-fliers-surface-in-Milford-4653341.php
Early risers in the city's northern section got a surprise Monday upon walking down their driveways to get the morning newspaper.

Lying nearby, for many, was a sandwich-size plastic bag weighted down by white rocks. Inside each bag was a folded letter bearing the logo of the United Klans of America, the largest functioning Ku Klux Klan operation in the nation.

The letter announced the group's efforts as a neighborhood watch organization.

    ReplyDelete
  175. BabbaZee8:46 AM

He did point out, however, that white supremacist groups have made their presence known in eastern Fairfield County, particularly in Stratford, in recent years.

"We've had issues in the past in the Stratford area with the (White) Wolves and other white supremacist activity," Esdaile said, adding that the state's NAACP chapter has held rallies against that kind of activity over the years.

Esdaile said the NAACP's offices in Connecticut, including its Bridgeport office, have received hate mail littered with swastikas and racial slurs in the last few years.

The many Obama administration scandals topped by the Edward Snowden fiasco is just the tip of the iceberg compared with the ineptness of the administration’s strategic policies now being exploited by our enemies, such as the Muslim Brotherhood. Despite the organization’s setback in Egypt, President Obama’s outreach to the Muslim world has certainly facilitated the Muslim Brotherhood’s penetration into U.S. government agencies that deals with national security, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Muslim Brotherhood has declared a national uprising after dozens of supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi were shot dead.

Egyptian state TV reported that 42 people were killed and more than 300 injured outside the Cairo headquarters of the Republican Guard where Mursi is being held.

The army said a “terrorist group” had tried to storm the building.

The Brotherhood said its supporters were praying when the military opened fire.

There is some evidence that young people are even starting to lose the ability to accurately read facial expressions and tone of voice in their fellow man because they primarily relate through screens and texting than through interpersonal communication. This shouldn't be too shocking, you've probably seen groups of young people all face down in their own device and shut off from speech by ear buds. They might be communicating with each other, but smiley faces and so on only work in text. It takes a different skill set to learn, display, and read facial expressions and tone of voice.
Further, reading on the internet has some key differences from reading a book. Long-form writing (such as I tend to do) is not as easy to absorb on a screen as on paper. There are too many distractions such as wondering what people said on Facebook or whether people responded to your tweet, even if nothing is showing up on your screen to distract you

    http://www.wordaroundthe.net/2013/07/the-new-illiteracy_8.html

I think maybe he worries too much. I have seen evidence of kids kind of getting over the phone thing as they get to be eighteen or so.

Not sated by his anti-Semitism, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has tried his hand at another form of blatant racism.

In comments made about Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the leader of the center-left and secular Republican Peoples Party (CHP), Erdoğan declared, “Kılıçdaroğlu is striving every bit he can to raise himself from the level of a black person to the level of a white man.”

The comments were made during a weekly meeting of his Justice and Development Party (AKP).
