Where There's Smoke There's Fire

Mount Sinai was covered with smoke,
because the Lord descended on it in fire.

    MRSA in meat

Just two weeks ago, Emerging Infectious Diseases published a study that found that some beef, chicken, and turkey sold in Michigan grocery stores contained methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The study found that 20.5 percent of the beef tested showed positive for S. aureus, 25 percent in chicken, and 24.6 percent in turkey. Six samples -- two in beef, three in chicken and one in turkey -- showed positive for MRSA.6

And although, as the researchers stated, cooking kills MRSA, handling the infected meat before cooking transfers the bacteria to your hands -- thus infecting you if you have any open wounds on your hands. Of course, then your hands become a source for infecting any other food you touch -- as does your cutting board, counter tops, plates, and sink. MRSA is now everywhere in your kitchen, even after you cook the meat.

But even worse was a study sponsored by the FDA and published in the journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases, which tested beef, chicken, pork, and turkey purchased from grocery stores in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Flagstaff, Ariz. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. This study, which is believed to be representative of the condition of meat across the United States, found that over halfof all the samples tested contained S. aureus. But even more disturbing was the fact that half of those samples tested positive for strains of MRSA that were resistant to at least three different kinds of antibiotics.7 Statistically, that means that every fourth package of meat, poultry, or pork that you bring into your house is leaving MRSA colonies all over your kitchen.

    Saudi Gazette

RIYADH – There is a lack of awareness among commoners about the mysterious coronavirus that has claimed 15 lives in Saudi Arabia.

“I know about Corona, the car. I owned it way back in 1998. But I don’t know anything about corona, the virus,” said a Saudi citizen.

But the rising number of coronavirus cases in the Kingdom has alarmed Saudi Twitter users, with a number of them calling for more public awareness of the disease.

  57. The Next Contagion: Closer Than You Think
    By MICHAEL T. OSTERHOLM

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/10/opinion/the-next-contagion-closer-than-you-think.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

THERE has been a flurry of recent attention over two novel infectious agents: the first, a strain of avian influenza virus (H7N9) in China that is causing severe respiratory disease and other serious health complications in people; the second, a coronavirus, first reported last year in the Middle East, that has brought a crop of new infections. While the number of human cases from these two pathogens has so far been limited, the death rates for each are notably high.

Alarmingly, we face a third, and far more widespread, ailment that has gotten little attention: call it “contagion exhaustion.” News reports on a seemingly unending string of frightening microbes — bird flu, flesh-eating strep, SARS, AIDS, Ebola, drug-resistant bugs in hospitals, the list goes on — have led some people to ho-hum the latest reports.

  58. Chinese Scientists Create New Mutant Bird-Flu Virus

Now a team of Chinese scientists has investigated that in their lab by creating a new hybrid virus. They combined H5N1 avian influenza, which is highly lethal but doesn’t transmit easily between people, with the highly contagious H1N1 swine flu strain responsible for infecting tens of millions of people in 2009.

The new hybrid virus passed easily between guinea pigs, which are used to study how flu infects mammals. Molecular changes in the virus may provide clues of what to look for in circulating H5N1 strains, perhaps allowing scientists to anticipate when viruses will more easily infect humans.

“The sole major difference is the use of guinea pigs in this paper and ferrets in that paper,” said Ebright. “In my assessment, neither paper contains substantive new information that justifies the risks posed by the research.”

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-22502143

The World Health Organization says it appears likely that the novel coronavirus (NCoV) can be passed between people in close contact.

This comes after the French health ministry confirmed a second man had contracted the virus in a possible case of human-to-human transmission.

Two more people in Saudi Arabia are also reported to have died from the virus, according to health officials.

NCoV is known to cause pneumonia and sometimes kidney failure.

An official of the city’s prosecutor’s office who was not authorized to be quoted by name says the two suspects are employees of the bar where Shabazz reportedly got in a violent dispute last week.

The 28-year-old Shabazz died of blunt-force trauma injuries. A companion said the dispute involved a $1,200 bar tab.

  127. Google-Berg: Global Elite Transforms Itself For Technocratic Revolution

Authoritarian, anti-democratic power networks are being re-branded as trendy, philanthropic-style forums

The secretive Bilderberg Group is currently undergoing a major transformation that will see it and other high profile networks merge under the banner of Google as the elite accelerates its plan to consolidate its technocratic agenda.

Put simply, Bilderberg is merging with Google under the stewardship of Google CEO Eric Schmidt, a regular Bilderberg attendee. Google’s annual Zeitgeist conference, which has been based at the Grove since 2007, immediately precedes the Bilderberg Group conference by a matter of days.

The Syriac Catholic patriarch said events in Syria were the result of Western nations carrying out a geopolitical strategy "to split Syria and other countries" in the Middle East.

"It's not a question of promoting democracy or pluralism as the West wants us to understand of its policies. This is a lie, this is hypocrisy," Syriac Patriarch Ignatius Joseph III Younan told Catholic News Service.

Western nations did not heed warnings and so "bear responsibility for what is happening in Syria." http://www.aina.org/news/20130513202014.htm

And it looks like it’ll take a lot more than a “low-level employee” to get U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder out of this tight spot.

See, as the Washington Examiner’s Phillip Klein notes, “it will be harder for President Obama to pin the DOJ’s action on lower level bureaucrats … because requests to subpoena news organization records require the approval of Attorney General Eric Holder.”

From the DOJ’s U.S. Attorneys’ Manual:

The Attorney General’s authorization is normally required before the issuance of any subpoena to a member of the news media or for the telephone toll records of a member of the news media. However, in those cases where the media member or his or her representative agrees to provide the material sought and that material has been published or broadcast, the United States Attorney or the responsible Assistant Attorney General may authorize issuance of the subpoena, thereafter submitting a report to the Office of Public Affairs detailing the circumstances surrounding the issuance of the subpoena

Farenthold: "Mr. Nordstrom, can you tell me the role of February 17 Martyrs Brigade in protecting the consulate in Benghazi?"

Nordstrom: "Certainly. That was the unit, for lack of a better term, that was provided to us by the Libyan government."

This already was news to me: The Libyan government provided known jihadists to guard U.S. interests?

On second thought, there is nothing fantastic about this when - or, rather, if - we consider that the U.S. government supported an army of known jihadists in its revolution against Libya's anti-jihadist former leader Moammar Gadhafi. I say "if" because I don't expect even the members of the committee to see the "Arab Spring" this way. Uncle Sam's open support for jihad is an epic scandal that is never even acknowledged.

  147. Weirdest IRS Questions for the Tea Party: Views, Donors, and Etymology

WASHINGTON — Between 2010 and 2012, the IRS asked tea party groups a whole lot of questions.

As admitted by the IRS, and as detailed in a forthcoming Inspector General report, the agency targeted conservative organizations seeking tax-exempt status for issue advocacy, a standard practice for political groups that aren’t mainly about elections.

The IRS sent long questionnaires to the organizations, and documents obtained by ABC News show that the questions were extensive. The Richmond Tea Party, for instance, was asked 17 detailed questions in 2010, and 12 more, with lots of bulleted sub-questions, in 2012. Other groups were asked about 30 questions in one letter, and most of the letters were similar, with some specific, quirky questions added or subtracted.

The Arab Spring may have died on that September 11. Or it may have died when Obama’s aides rushed to retreat across the Red Line. But one thing is certain; it’s deader than Monty Python’s blue parrot.

Obama looked into the Syrian abyss and pulled back. Maybe the timing of the war would have been a distraction from amnesty and gun control, but more likely the responsibility-to-protectors just couldn’t sell anyone on their happy ending.

There is not one single place where a major Arab Spring transformation has led to a happy ending.

Egypt is a political, social and economic disaster. Obama had been counting on Islamists transforming Egypt into another Turkey on a slow and sensible schedule. But Morsi had a little too much in common with Obama. Like Obama, he couldn’t wait a decade to crush his opponents and enact repressive policies that would fracture the country. He could barely wait a month.

But any truth about the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Christ Stevens and three other Americans appears to have been put six feet under as far as our current administration is concerned.

According to Judge Jeanine Pirro, whose fiery speech is one of the best to be found on the subject of Benghazi, our president and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton knew a "stand down" order had effectively sealed the fate of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. They died because men who could have saved them were not sent to help. Pirro states both Obama and Clinton lied, leaving all four men to die. Obama went to bed and rested up for his trip to Las Vegas, knowing all the while there was no enraging You-tube video. They both knew the truth, but chose to lie. But, Pirro said, after all, there was an election looming ahead.

    We now know Obama knew.

President Obama’s second-term campaign slogan was “Forward,” but instead we’ve got cover-ups, congressional investigations and the government persecution of political opponents and reporters.

Bobby Darin was born 77 years ago today.

A singer, songwriter and actor of film and television, Darin performed in a range of music genres, including pop, rock, jazz, folk and country.

He started as a songwriter for Connie Francis, and recorded his own first million-seller "Splish Splash" in 1958. This was followed by "Dream Lover," "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea," which brought him world fame.
    ...
In 1962, he won a Golden Globe for his first film Come September, co-starring his first wife, Sandra Dee (married 1960–1967).

Throughout the 1960s, he became more politically active and worked on Robert Kennedy's Democratic presidential campaign. He was present on June 6, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on the evening of Kennedy's assassination.

The same year, he discovered that he had been brought up by his grandparents, not his parents, and that the girl he thought was his sister was actually his mother.

These events deeply affected Darin and sent him into a long period of seclusion.

Although he made a successful television comeback, his health was beginning to fail, as he had always expected, following bouts of rheumatic fever in childhood. This knowledge of his vulnerability had always spurred him on to exploit his musical talent while still young.

He died at 37 in 1973, following a heart operation in Los Angeles.
