Well, again, I mean, that’s a hypothetical. But let’s be clear. Benghazi happened a long time ago. We are unaware of any agency blocking an employee who would like to appear before Congress to provide information related to Benghazi. The Accountability Review Board which investigated this matter -- and I think in no one’s estimation sugarcoated what happened there or pulled any punches when it came to holding accountable individuals that they felt had not successfully executed their responsibilities -- heard from everyone and invited everyone. So there was a clear indication there that everyone who had something to say was welcome to provide information to the Accountability Review Board.

But again, with regards to these stories, to our knowledge, we’re not aware of any agency that has blocked an employee who would like to appear before Congress. And as you noted, both the State Department and Department of Defense have made clear that they are not aware of any requests for a security clearance for a private attorney having been made in connection with the Benghazi investigation. So what you have is an attorney saying she represents somebody, claiming that she’s not getting this security clearance, and yet the agencies involved have no information about that at all, which falls into the broader story here, which this is these allegations are part of an unfortunate pattern of spreading misinformation and politicizing this issue.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — A psychiatrist pleaded guilty Wednesday and was sentenced to 30 days in jail for planting booby traps that injured Oregon mountain bikers riding down national forest trails outside Ashland.

After pleading guilty to assault and reckless endangering, Dr. Jackson Dempsey apologized to the mountain bikers, his family and the mental health community in Jackson County Circuit Court in Medford. But he did not explain what led him to string nylon cords across the trails, and put nails and small trees in the path.

Besides the 30 days in jail, Judge Lorenzo Mejia ordered Dempsey to stay away from national forest trails for the two years he is on probation.

During his 20-year career, former Sgt. German “GB” Bosque has been accused of cracking the head of a handcuffed suspect, beating juveniles, hiding drugs in his police car, stealing from suspects, defying direct orders and lying and falsifying police reports. He once called in sick to take a vacation to Cancún.

So far, he has managed to keep his badge, although that may change next month when the Florida Department of Law Enforcement attempts to revoke his police certification.

    The Real Problems With Psychiatry
A psychotherapist contends that the DSM, psychiatry's "bible" that defines all mental illness, is not scientific but a product of unscrupulous politics and bureaucracy.

    ReplyDelete
  37. pbird8:15 PM

One of the reasons was to count people. The first collections of diagnoses were called the "statistical manual," not the "diagnostic and statistical manual." There were also parochial reasons. As the rest of medicine became oriented toward diagnosing illnesses by seeking their causes in biochemistry, in the late 19th, early 20th century, the claim to authority of any medical specialty hinged on its ability to diagnose suffering. To say "okay, your sore throat and fever are strep throat." But psychiatry was unable to do that and was in danger of being discredited. As early as 1886, prominent psychiatrists worried that they would be left behind, or written out of the medical kingdom. For reasons not entirely clear, the government turned to the American Medico-Psychological Association, (later the American Psychiatric Association, or APA), to tell them how many mentally ill people were out there. The APA used it as an opportunity to establish its credibility.

I guarantee you that in the course of our conversation a doctor is telling a patient, "you have a chemical imbalance -- that's why you're depressed. Take Prozac." Despite the fact that every doctor who knows anything knows that there is no biochemical imbalance that causes depression, and most doctors understand that a diagnosis of depression doesn't really tell you anything other than what you already knew, that doesn't stop them from saying it.

The owner of a Midtown tourist shop is firing back at Mayor Bloomberg’s crusade against toy guns, filing papers to block a $60,000 fine from the city for selling lighters shaped like small pistols.

“We don’t have the money,” said Fred Shayes, 49, who owns US Camera & Computer Inc. near Penn Station. “I would have to take a loan out from the bank to pay that.”

Shayes filed a petition in Manhattan Supreme Court to vacate the fine. At issue is a bronze-and-silver colored 3-inch butane lighter shaped like a gun with a black handle and a red tip that was selling for $10 until investigators slapped the store with a fine and yanked it off their shelves.

“Coming to live here is completely different… seeing the six or seven strands of acute irrationality in American life, and having gone down to Tampa, Florida for the Republican convention, and realized that America was that close to electing a man who looks like an evangelical porn star. A president who would have gone around the globe with a faith that he was espousing — you can see it on Facebook or Youtube — hot under the collar he was, as he expounded his view that the returned Christ will spend half his time in Jerusalem, and half his time at the site of the original garden of Eden… in Missouri. This hick, this complete Philistine, was going to represent America on the world stage. And as Clive James, the great poet and novelist and writer said of Barry Manilow, he says, ‘The thing about Barry Manilow is, it’s incomprehensible when you confront it, but everyone you know thinks he’s shit, everyone you don’t know thinks he’s great.’ And that’s what applies to all your right-wing politicians.”

A federal jury ruled Wednesday afternoon that Henry’s Turkey Service of Goldwaithe, Texas, must pay 32 mentally disabled workers $240 million for years of abuse and neglect. The now-shuttered company’s violations of the American Disabilities Act range from physically abusing the men to packing them in unsanitary bunkhouses at night.

Over 40 years, hundreds of men were shipped from Texas to work in Henry’s Iowa plant for 41 cents an hour. They were housed in a century-old, cockroach-infested school building with a broken boiler, denied access to disability services, and battered with constant physical and verbal abuse by their so-called caretakers. The complaint details how injuries and requests for medical aid were ignored, restroom breaks were prohibited, while caretakers mocked the men as “retarded” “dumbass” and “stupid.”

    http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/05/02/1949541/meat-processing-plant-ordered-to-pay-mentally-disabled-workers-240-million-for-decades-of-abuse/?mobile=nc

Meanwhile, the state of Iowa and the U.S. Labor Department turned a blind eye to the labor camp’s myriad violations, as the Des Moines Register explains:

Evidence produced during the trial indicates bunkhouse supervisor Randy Neubauer had one of the bunkhouse residents handcuffed to his bed at night — an allegation Neubauer denied when testifying.

Also, an Iowa Department of Human Services social worker testified that evidence showed some of the men were punished for violating company rules by being taken to a garage next to the bunkhouse, where they were forced to walk around a pole while they were hit, kicked and screamed at by their caretakers.

Although federal officials have said Henry’s violated the state fire code, committed abuse and ran the bunkhouse as an unlicensed care facility, the state of Iowa never filed criminal charges in the case.
    [...]
Henry’s decades-long practice of paying the men less than the minimum wage was well-known to the U.S. Department of Labor, which over 15 years repeatedly cited the company for wage violations but imposed no penalties.

Even Kenneth Henry, the owner of Henry’s Turkey Service, struck an employee, or one of the “boys,” as Henry called the mostly middle-aged men. Henry denied it in court, also claiming he had no knowledge of the appalling conditions in his labor camp.

After a Des Moines Register investigation helped shut down the plant in 2009, the company was ordered to pay millions in penalties to the workers, the U.S. Labor Department, and Iowa Workforce Development for wage violations. However, months later, Henry’s has not yet paid up. On top of these outstanding penalties, Henry’s will now have to pay for the abuses and neglect suffered by the workers.

The $240 million penalty was welcomed as a “powerful statement” by advocates and family members of the abused workers. Still, one expert witness wondered, “How do you put a value on decades of lost opportunity? You can’t recapture those years…These men were hidden away for decades, and for others’ personal gain.”

Several major Dutch newspapers have published that Dutch-Turkish volunteer Mehmet Sahin, is being harassed and intimidated by other Turks - almost on a daily basis. He had comitted the "sin" of admonishing three youngsters from his community who praised the Holocaust, Hitler and the killing of Jewish babies in February on TV.

Sahin mentioned that reactions from other Turks included that he “is a Jewish agent,” “psychologically sick,” and “a collaborator.” Sahin had received death threats after his admonishment of the young Turkish anti-Semites.

The Mayor of Arnhem where he lives, rather than offering protection, then recommended that Sahin go into hiding with his family, which he did. Thereafter, Sahin remained at home for a month.

Sahin now told the press that when he went out on the streets afterwards, he was called names in Turkish including: “You are born out of the sperm of a Jew who raped a Turkish mother.” He said, “I replied ‘Dirty Fascists!’ He also said that Turks in his neighborhood isolate him and the same is the case with Turkish organizations and key figures in and outside Arnhem.

Police have identified the gunman in the Houston airport shooting from Thursday afternoon that left the shooter dead and a terminal on lockdown.

On Thursday TheBlaze had learned from sources that the person had intended to “take out the entire terminal.” That was confirmed by KHOU-TV late Thursday night, which reported that the man — 29-year-old Carnell Moore of Beaumont — had left a suicide note saying he “had a bigger plan, but decided to show mercy on others.”

That note also said he had a “monster within” and he wanted police to take care of it.

    From the report:

Moore posted two cryptic messages on his Facebook wall Wednesday: “This Life Will Crash Tomorrow!” and “I recently had the chance of staring death in the face, and she was beautiful.”

Moore had been staying in a Houston hotel the last few days. He would have turned 30 this month.

On New Year's Eve, a woman stood up at a local pub and said it was time
to get ready for the midnight countdown. At the stroke of midnight, she
wanted every husband to stand next to the one person who made his life
worth living. As the clock struck midnight, the bartender was almost
    crushed to death.

Obama and Clinton Blocked Military Rescue Efforts in Benghazi »

On the night of the Benghazi terror attack, special operations put out multiple calls for all available military and other assets to be moved into position to help — but the State Department and White House never gave the military permission to cross into Libya,

TOPEKA, Kan. – U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has told Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback that a new state law attempting to block federal regulation of some guns is unconstitutional and that the federal government is willing to go to court over the issue.

But Brownback replied in a letter Thursday that Kansans hold dear their right to bear arms and are protecting the state's sovereignty. Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a former law professor who helped draft the law, accused the nation's top law enforcement official of "blustering" over the issue.

"The people of Kansas have clearly expressed their sovereign will," Brownback said at the conclusion of his letter. "It is my hope that upon further review, you will see their right to do so."

On May 3, 2001, The BBC reported that "Ex-Beatle George Harrison had been treated for cancer".

After the story hit, George's attorneys reacted by saying Harri...son had visited the Mayo Clinic in the United States to remove a cancerous growth from one of his lungs. They further claimed the former Beatle had made an "excellent recovery and was in the best spirits and on top form."

The lawyers may have been telling the truth, but, less than seven months later, George Harrison passed away.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was denied a second slice of pizza today at an Italian eatery in Brooklyn.

The owners of Collegno's Pizzeria say they refused to serve him more than one piece to protest Bloomberg's proposed soda ban, which would limit the portions of soda sold in the city.

Bloomberg was having an informal working lunch with city comptroller John Liu at the time and was enraged by the embarrassing prohibition. The owners would not relent, however, and the pair were forced to decamp to another restaurant to finish their meal.

Hungarian court allows neo-nazi rally before Jewish congress....

A Hungarian court has given the go ahead for a far-right protest on Saturday before an international conference of Jewish leaders in Budapest, saying a police ruling that banned it was belated and unlawful.

The rally, to be held near parliament, will feature speeches from leader of the far-right Jobbik party and Marton Gyongyosi, a Jobbik lawmaker whose call for Jews to be registered on lists as threats to national security was condemned internationally.

A 19-year-old woman has been indicted for the January kidnapping and rape of a 5-year-old Philadelphia girl.
Prosecutors say Christina Regusters wore an Islamic veil and pretended to be the mother of Nailla Robinson when she checked the kindergartner out of school in January. The girl was taken to a nearby house and sexually assaulted, then abandoned nearly naked at a playground, where she was rescued.
