Hours after bombs blew up the Boston Marathon and the United States’ sense of security, the executive director of the Northampton, Mass.-based Bill of Rights Defense Committee predicted that somebody would posit the belief that unmanned aircraft – a.k.a. drones – would have helped identify and track the killers.

“I do fear the events in Boston, that someone will say, ‘If we would have had a drone over the finish line we would be able to track back the footage and see who it was. It will not surprise me when it happens,” said Buttar, whose organization was founded 12 years ago to fight the USA Patriot Act and what the committee sees as a ceaseless wave of assaults on civil rights.

Earlier this month, in what observers and locals characterize as a very rare occurrence, Christians in the Francisabad neighborhood ofGujranwala stood their ground when a group of Muslims from nearby settlements began attacking their property.

He inherited all of my beer, my Bailey's, and remaining holy leaf. I got cleaned out in more ways than one. Holy leaf never hurt anyone. It's such a pain in the ass to find too. Giving up beer and cigarettes was pretty much all I had in mind. GOD will provide, surely a merciful and just GOD will provide.

Dimitri Tiomkin (Russian: Дмитрий Зиновьевич Тёмкин, Dmitrij Zinov'evič Tjomkin, sometimes transliterated as Dmitri Tiomkin; Ukrainian: Дмитро Зиновійович Тьомкін, Dmitro Zinov'ivič Tomkin) was born in Kremenchuk, Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire.

His family was of Jewish descent,[2] with his father a "distinguished pathologist" and associate of Professor Paul Ehrlich, and later a notable Zionist leader Zinovy Tiomkin.
His mother was a musician who began teaching the young Tiomkin piano at
an early age. Her hope was to have her son become a professional
pianist, according to Tiomkin biographer, Christopher Palmer.[3] Tiomkin described his mother as being "small, blonde, merry and vivacious."[3]

He was educated at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in Russia, where he studied piano with Felix Blumenfeld, teacher of Vladimir Horowitz, and harmony and counterpoint with Alexander Glazunov, mentor to Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich.[4]

There was a zone of privacy in that time and place we can’t begin to imagine today. Money, emotional traumas, and personal doubts were simply not discussed, even by the closest of friends. Appearances were accepted as reality, so people kept very busy making sure every aspect of their lives looked correct. That didn’t mean having the most lavish house, the heftiest jewels, or the largest private plane, as it came to in later decades. It did mean dressing, behaving, and speaking appropriately; appearing to be happily married, in love, or looking for love en route to marriage; not complaining about one’s career or annual income; and being enormously ambitious without evidencing any ambition whatsoever.

true, even among the common people..in ways it was pretty nice

when the actress Dyan Cannon divorced Grant in 1968, after less than three years of marriage, LSD was used against him. In seeking custody of their daughter, Jennifer, Cannon’s lawyers claimed that he was “an unfit father” because of his use of the drug and his resulting “instability.” However, when the respected psychiatrist Judd Marmor testified that Grant had told him LSD had deepened the actor’s “sense of compassion for people, deepened his understanding of himself, and helped cure his shyness and anxiety in dealing with other people,” Grant was given two months a year with his daughter and the right to overnight visits.

  86. SEATTLE (Reuters) – Washington state’s governor signed into law on Monday the final piece of a six-year effort to rewrite state laws using gender-neutral vocabulary, replacing terms such as “fisherman” and “freshman” with “fisher” and “first-year student.”

Lawmakers have passed a series of bills since 2007 to root out gender bias from Washington statutes, though a 1983 state mandate required that all laws be written in gender-neutral terms unless a specification of gender was intended.

“This was a much larger effort than I had envisioned. Mankind means man and woman,” said Democratic state Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles of Seattle.

The new gender-neutral references, for example, include “journey-level plumber” instead of “journeyman plumber,” “handwriting” in place of “penmanship,” and “signal operator” for “signalman.”

Despite the fact that all potentially hazardous items were kept out of the students' reach, school officials at Washington Irving Elementary School informed Doug Bartlett, a 17-year veteran in the classroom, that his use of the tools as visual aids endangered his students. Bartlett was subsequently penalized with a four-day suspension without pay - charged with possessing, carrying, storing or using a weapon.

Omega 3's help build up blood platelets. So does liver, but I'm not eating any liver. Never could stand the stuff. Red Fruits of all sorts work also. That and other foods like salmon. I have some of that I'll dress up some leafy greens with tonight (spinach) with some feta cheese and some lovely whole wheat rolls mit buttah. Have some coconut water which is also good for that, along with some fresh papaya...too bad nuts don't fit the bill. I've got a ton of almonds, but would get no benefit from that.

I do have left-over lentil & kale zuppa to round things out though.something old, something new, something to gnaw on, something to chew.

Consider a far more mundane example. People walk down the street and look at a large building, and it never occurs to them it was put there. It was conceived, designed, and built. To passersby, it’s just there. It’s a “there” object in their field of perception. Nothing to think about. Nothing to reflect on. It’s a piece of the one and only reality.

But a painter, if he’s being honest, will tell you that every time he steps up to a blank canvas, he’s inventing space and time.

I am constantly staring at stuff that is just there thinking about how it got there...probably why i take some many dopy looking pictures with my little camera

Wavii seems like it was built to help Google in its growing rivaly with Facebook – it set out to build a better version of Facebook’s news feeds, by “teaching computers to read everything that is reported or shared on the internet, and automatically produce interesting social content about it,” according to the company’s description of itself.

The idea is, “as we sometimes describe it, to make Facebook out of Google,” Wavii says on its site.

Sorry, that blog and its links read like fearmongering crap. The only thing that's missing is exhortations to Buy! Gold! Now!

I strongly doubt that the US incarceration rate is higher than that of China---or Cuba or North Korea, for that matter. There are probably other nations which also have extremely high incarceration rates, though of course it also depends on some other things.

How is the incarceration rate measured? Are they differentiating between holding time in jails and actual imprisonment for felonies? Do they include gulags?

I would suggest that even if the US has a "higher incarceration rate" (though I still question this assertion), it probably has a far lower prison population than many other countries. To use the example of China again, China could have an incarceration rate half of ours and still have a higher prison population than we do, simply because they have so many more people---yet this website claims that we have both the highest actual prison population and the highest incarceration rate. That alone says that this data is false.

And largest number of actual incarcerated:

Criminologists and legal scholars in other industrialized nations say they are mystified and appalled by the number and length of American prison sentences.

The United States has, for instance, 2.3 million criminals behind bars, more than any other nation, according to data maintained by the International Center for Prison Studies at King's College London.

China's rate is 121 or 171 per 100,000 depending on whose figures you believe vs. 716 in the Land of the Free.

    ReplyDelete
  178. buzzsawmonkey6:30 PM

Sorry, but the "information" you have provided contains assertions without any clue as to the criteria on which those assertions are based. As such, it is not information at all, but potentially-fraudulent claims masquerading as information.

The Wiki chart does not indicate how "incarceration" is determined. Does it include jail time as well as prison time? Misdemeanors as well as felonies? Do you really expect me to believe that China and Cuba, famous for their punitive "re-education" camps which are, of course, not prisons---oh, no---are less restrictive than the US, or that if they are it is not because people who in the US would be imprisoned are merely shot out of hand in other countries? Did it occur to anyone that people have a chance of growing old in a US prison rather than being beaten or worked to death---and that a greater rate of incarceration and a lower rate of execution is actually a measure of wealth?

Sorry: I've seen these claims before, and I've seen them ripped to shreds by people who actually analyze such figures. I look at that NYT article and I see the kind of empty fact-free handwringing I remember from pot-fueled bull sessions in college in the waning afterglow of the Sixties.

I do not accept the figures in the form offered. NO figures are valid no matter how pretty the chart if you do not know the methodology by which they were obtained and analyzed.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Q_Burn6:35 PM

In its distance from any existing or realistically imaginable condition of society, “the communist idea” that has been resurrected by thinkers such as Alain Badiou and Slavoj Žižek is on a par with fantasies of the free market that have been revived on the right. The ideology promoted by the Austrian economist F.A. Hayek and his followers, in which capitalism is the winner in a competition for survival among economic systems, has much in common with the ersatz version of evolution propagated by Herbert Spencer more than a century ago. Reciting long-exploded fallacies, these neo-Marxian and neoliberal theories serve only to illustrate the persisting power of ideas that promise a magical deliverance from human conflict.
