  6. Exclusive: How Syria's rebel fighters were sold exploding rifles – by a
    mystery Briton named ‘Emile’

Opponents of Bashar al-Assad suspect they have been duped by a double agent
    posing as an arms dealer

    Kim Sengupta
    Description: Author Biography

    Friday 26 October 2012

To the Syrian rebels, the offer was enticing: Kalashnikov AK-47 rifles and
ammunition at below-market price, with supplies plentiful. The dealers were
convincing: two of them had European passports, one a British passport, and
they claimed to have been involved in supplying arms during the Bosnia war.

Three meetings took place in Istanbul between representatives of the rebels
and the dealers, including the Briton, calling himself Emile, to organise
shipments. An initial payment of around $40,000 was made.

The delivery was on time, as had been a previous shipment. But it soon
became apparent that something was wrong.

Rifles exploded during a firefight. There was a second such “accident”, and
a third, leading to injuries. An examination of the remaining consignments
revealed that propellants inside some of the cartridges had been replaced
with ground explosives with three or four times design-pressure, with the
aim of bursting them in the breach.

1957 with the Preferred Plan and Operation Wappen. Syria had just signed a deal with the Soviet Union for technical aid and training, and we all know what that means. The same rule applies today as it did back then: If we can’t have it, nobody can. But where, you might ask, do you turn when you need to stir up more trouble in Damascus? You guessed it — the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood was to play a critical role in starting an internal revolt to get the ball rolling for the overthrow of the Syrian government. The plan called for collaboration between Western, Iraqi, Lebanese and Jordanian intelligence agencies to send arms and aid to “political factions with paramilitary or other actionist capabilities.” It even called for assassinations and deadly false-flag operations to be conducted in Syria and blamed on political enemies — like we did with Mossadegh in Iran — and used to justify military intervention.

Like Operation Straggle, the Preferred Plan was never put into action. This was mostly because of the fact that Syria’s pesky neighbors wouldn’t agree to go along with the plot. Instead, the West settled on a policy of “containment plus,” involving the use of exiles, rebels, opposition groups and pro-Western Arab leaders to keep Syria under constant political pressure and turmoil.

The moral of the story: Just because CNN and company have decided to shamelessly promote John Kerry’s plan to give $60 million in “non-lethal assistance” to the Syrians, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. We have our own problems to deal with, here at home. So before we send another fortune to the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood or the Al Nusra Front, maybe we should think about sending some “non-lethal assistance” into our own domestic warzones.

  28. CDC says ‘nightmare bacteria’ a growing threat

By Lena H. Sun, Published: March 5

Federal officials warned Tuesday that “nightmare bacteria” — including the deadly superbug that struck a National Institutes of Health facility two years ago — are increasingly resistant to even the strongest antibiotics, posing a growing threat to hospitals and nursing homes nationwide.

Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said at a news conference: “It’s not often that our scientists come to me and say we have a very serious problem and we need to sound an alarm. But that’s exactly what we are doing today.”

He called on doctors, hospital leaders and health officials to work together to stop the spread of the infections. “Our strongest antibiotics don’t work, and patients are left with potentially untreatable infections,” he said.

Although the bacteria, known as Carbapenen-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae, or CRE, haven’t spread to the wider community — like some other germs — they are more dangerous, said Frieden, who described them as a “triple threat.”

The Democrat led Senate Judiciary Committee has four gun-control bills on its agenda today.

Besides expanding background checks, the other measures would ban assault weapons and ammunition magazines carrying more than 10 rounds, make gun trafficking and the purchase of firearms for people barred from owning them federal crimes, and provide more money for schools to buy
video cameras and other safety equipment.

The measures will go before the full Senate in April, but they are expected to pass in the committee today. Of the bills, expanding background checks is believed to be the strongest while the assault weapon ban, the weakest.

Senate Democrats are trying to make a deal with more conservative members like Tom Coburn (R-OK) to increase chances of their bills passing the House. So far Coburn is not having it.

  67. It is remarkable that a broadly framed discussion of the well-being of boys and men immediately turns away from a focus on males and moves instead to talk about women, especially relationships between men and women (what Esther Vilar once termed partnerships between “the manipulated man” and women, divorce, child custody battles). Perhaps just as important, the participants in the discussion about most men are often only men. At the point when concern for males is broached as a topic, oddly enough women go silent. This is symptomatic of three powerful taboos. The first is the inhibition among men to talk about their boyhood. Yet the boy in the man never disappears; he only goes underground. This is not an undesired phantom presence, but probably the source of creativity in men, what I have termed thymos or male spiritedness. Given the prominence in the discussion of talk of relationships between men and women, little is said about intimate relationships between men themselves, what has been known as friendship. When male-male relationships are mentioned, they are assumed to have a sexual basis. Yet one has only to read Plato, Montaigne and Emerson (to cover a broad period of time and a number of quite different cultures) to realize that same-sex relationships have always been essential for boys and men. Think of the father-son relation as foundational, but also of the importance of the deep confidences between chums during the preadolescent years (pointed out by Harry Stack Sullivan), and the powerful lifelong ties established by males who have been close in high school or college, or served in the military. The third taboo concerns the silence of women when talk about what is good about boys and men is important. Instead one hears only of “problems” when talking about boys and only of “shortcomings” when the talk turns to men

Instead of reaching back to the past and "compassionate conservatism," though, Republicans need to start considering an advent of practical conservatism.

In practical terms, the entitlement programs we have cannot be dismantled, as Randian purists would prefer. Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are too popular for repeal, and more importantly, deliver a level of living standards on which millions of Americans rely — standards that would plummet in these programs' absence. Instead of denying that, practical conservatism would embrace that — because on the trajectory of current policy, these programs will utterly collapse at some point. There is, after all, nothing compassionate about a default, or about sticking succeeding generations with the bill for benefits we enjoy in the present.

Although it didn’t make much news in the United States, Britain’s National Health Service (“the envy of the world“) has been rocked by the discovery that it is killing patients needlessly at a rate of knots. According to the NHS’s own bulletins, 40,000 patients needlessly die per year in its hospitals. The Independent put the number at only 1,000 needless patient deaths per month. The Telegraph, citing evidence given in Parliament put the number of patients harmed in treatment at one in ten.

In other words a lot of deaths. Not that management didn’t know. The NHS spent 15 million pounds in taxpayer money to prosecute and gag 600 whistleblowers who thought things had gone too far. The man at the center of the scandal was Sir David Nicholson, the Chief Executive of the NHS.

Nicholson is a man who never held a job in his life outside of government and activism. “Nicholson joined the NHS on graduation, and then the Communist Party of Great Britain”. Nor was he just a casual, student Red. Nicholson, according to the Guardian, was a “tankie”, a “term referring to those members of the Communist Party of Great Britain that followed the Kremlin line, agreeing with the crushing of revolts in Hungary and later Czechoslovakia by Soviet tanks; or more broadly, those who followed a traditional pro-Soviet position.” And rung by rung this compassionate man climbed the ladder of the NHS until he reached its pinnacle.

When she asks him where he's going, he replies...
"I'm going to Vegas too. I want to see you live on $800 a year!"

Against me better judgement, I posted a comment on an Ann Coulter thread today. She has a piece out about how the Repubs should try being popular by locking up the mentally ill so they don't shoot people.

    http://www.humanevents.com/2013/03/07/coulter-maybe-republicans-should-try-being-popular/

    I disagreed as follows:

Who defines "mental illness", there's the problem. The pharmaceutical industry has largely succeeded in defining every mundane human dissatisfaction as a disorder that requires medication. I smell a brilliant way for the state to stigmatize people and restrict their rights. The Soviets were very good at this.

Inspired by the dramatic improvements in New Yorkers' health and well-being after he banned smoking and junk food, as well as large sodas, salt, trans fats, Styrofoam food containers, and loud earbuds, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced that the NYPD is organizing a Food Felonies Unit (FFU) to further combat the proliferation of food crimes.

I’ve brought a very important book with me, titled America: The Cultural Genocides. It by is Munir Akash. This book discusses the genocides, providing documentation about its different types. It discusses the genocide of the people they named “Indians.” They killed hundreds of millions.

An entire chapter in this book is devoted to the eating of the flesh of the Indians. It is an entire chapter on how the Americans – or the British immigrants, who were referred to as “pilgrims” – would kill the Indians and then eat them – cooked, barbequed, made into kebabs, you name it… Not just that, sometimes they would killed them for the purpose of eating them.

  145. CAIRO (AP) -- Thousands of low-ranking policemen on strike across Egypt on Thursday refused orders to work and protested what they claim is the politicization of the force in favor of the president's Muslim Brotherhood party.

The strike, in its fourth day, is a rare show of defiance by policemen against their superiors. It threatens to unravel a security force already weakened by two years of unrest following the ouster of longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Say goodbye to your children’s privacy. Say hello to an unprecedented nationwide student-tracking system, whose data will apparently be sold by government officials to the highest bidders. It’s yet another encroachment of centralized education bureaucrats on local control and parental rights under the banner of “Common Core.”
