Once the most prominent voice in protest music, Bob Dylan has been collecting a lot of upper-crust citations. He's received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal of Arts and France's Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, not to mention 10 Grammy Awards and an Oscar.

Now he's the first rock star to be voted into the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Letters, home to writers Ezra Pound, Phillip Roth, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Sinclair Lewis and Kurt Vonnegut and composer Duke Ellington. Categories include music, literature and visual arts, embracing such members as Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Rothko, Jasper Johns, Frank Lloyd Wright and Roy Lichtenstein.

Uncertain whether to recognize Dylan for his words or music, the academy opted to anoint the singer/songwriter an honorary member, as they did with earlier picks Meryl Streep, Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese.

Author and 2012 inductee Michael Chabon will give the keynote address, entitled Rock 'n' Roll, at the May induction ceremony in New York. With tour dates booked in April and May, Dylan, 71, is unlikely to attend.

A New York woman, millionaire and socialite Annie George is on trial and facing federal criminal charges for allegedly keeping a domestic servant in a “forced labor situation” within her 30,000-square-foot Llenroc mansion in Rexford.

Less than a week after a federal judge dismissed the case against George, she has been re-indicted.

According to CBS 6 in Albany, the slave, Valsamma Mathai, 49, was kept at George’s estate against her will for six-and-a-half years. During her time in upstate New York, the undocumented illegal immigrant is testifying that she was forced to work seven days a week, for more than 12 hours a day.

George’s 34-room property has an indoor swimming pool, 15 fireplaces, a helicopter pad, glass elevator and 24-karat gold ceilings. You would think with so much extravagance and space that George would provide ample accommodations for her help, but that wasn’t the case. Mathai had to sleep in a walk-in closet. http://firsttoknow.com/new-york-socialite-on-trial-for-keeping-a-slave/?utm_source=o_fo&utm_campaign=new-york-socialite-on-tr-25542

RAT operators have nearly complete control over the computers they infect; they can (and do) browse people's private pictures in search of erotic images to share with each other online. They even have strategies for watching where women store the photos most likely to be compromising.

"I just use the file manager feature of my RAT in whatever one im using and in [a RAT called] cybergate I use the search feature to find those jpgs [JPEG image files] that are 'hidden' unless u dig and dig and dig," wrote one poster. "A lot of times the slave will download pics from their phone or digital camera and I watch on the remote desktop to see where they save em to and that's usually where you'll find the jackpot!"

Women who have this done to them, especially when the spying escalates into blackmail, report feeling paranoia. One woman targeted by the California "sextortionist" Luis Mijangos wouldn't leave her dorm room for a week after Mijangos turned her laptop into a sophisticated bugging device. Mijangos began taunting her with information gleaned from offline conversations.

Building an army of slaves isn't particularly complicated; ratters simply need to trick their targets into running a file. This is commonly done by seeding file-sharing networks with infected files and naming them after popular songs or movies, or through even more creative
methods. "I seem to get a lot of female slaves by spreading Sims 3 with a [RAT] server on torrent sites," wrote one poster. Another turned to social media, where "I've been able to message random hot girls on facebook (0 mutual friends) and infect (usually become friends with them too); with the right words anything is possible."

NRA Says UN Arms Treaty Could Force US Gun Owners on International Registry

Posted by Jim Hoft on Monday, March 18, 2013, 11:42 AM

The NRA is busy these days protecting Second Amendment rights here at home. The gun-rights group is also actively working in opposition to the UN Arms Treaty. The NRA says the treaty, supported by the Obama Administration, would restrict individual ownership and could force Americans onto an international registry.

    The Washington Post reported:

The NRA is among the treaty’s most
vocal opponents and a founder of the World Forum on Shooting Activities,
an international coalition of gun rights activists and gun
manufacturers who plan to speak against the treaty.

“What we really object to is the inclusion of civilian firearms
within the scope of the ATT,” said Tom Mason, the group’s executive secretary and a lawyer who has represented the NRA at U.N. meetings for nearly two decades. “This is a treaty that really needs to address the transfer of large numbers of military weapons that leads to human rights abuses. We have submitted language that you can define what a civilian firearm is.”

The NRA also argues that the treaty could infringe on gun
rights as understood in the United States and could force Americans onto an international registry.

Activists say the NRA wants to gut the treaty. “The NRA claim that there is such a thing as ‘civilian weapons’ and that these can and need to be treated differently from military weapons under the Arms Trade Treaty is — to put it politely — the gun lobby’s creativity on full display,” Ringuette said in a statement. “There is no such distinction. To try to create one would create a loophole that would render the treaty inoperative, as anyone could claim that he or she was in the business of trading ‘civilian weapons.’ ”

    Bloomberg has more:

Supporters including U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry
say a treaty wouldn’t impinge on the U.S. Constitution’s Second
Amendment right to bear arms, the talk of arms regulation has agitated American gun-rights advocates led by the National Rifle Association, which claims more than 4 million members.

“Neither the United Nations, nor any other foreign influence, has the authority to meddle with the freedoms guaranteed by our Bill of Rights,” Wayne LaPierre, chief executive officer of the NRA, said in a July 14 address to the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty Conference.

Crowley was filled with sadness for two young men who took advantage of a drunk and possibly drugged young girl because the judge actually held them accountable for what they did. Instead of wondering aloud why they weren't tried as adults, she was instead very concerned that now they would have to register for the rest of their lives as sex offenders.

Fresh off a setback in his effort to ban large soda cups in restaurants, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is out with another health initiative that could cause controversy: requiring stores to keep cigarette packs out of sight.

“New York City has dramatically lowered our smoking rate, but even one new smoker is one too many – especially when it’s a young person,” Mayor Bloomberg announced in a press release. “Young people are targets of marketing and the availability of cigarettes and this legislation will help prevent another generation from the ill health and shorter life expectancy that comes with smoking.”

The bill will be introduced at Mr. Bloomberg’s request by Council Member Maria del Carmen Arroyo, the chair of the Health Committee, but will still have to make its way through the City Council to become law.

  114. When the host asked the sheikh "Do the Americans owe us jizya?" he responded, "Yes," adding that it is the price Americans have to pay "so we can leave them alone!" When the host asked the sheikh if he was proclaiming a fatwa, the latter exclaimed, "By Allah of course!" The sheikh added that, to become a truly Islamic state, Egypt must "impose on America to pay aid as jizya, before we allow it to realize its own interests, the ones which we agree to."

While the Egyptian cleric was focused on "international jizya"—that is, money paid by one non-Muslim nation to a Muslim nation, U.S money to Egypt—other Muslims have been receiving and enjoying individual "jizya" from Western, infidel governments, in the form of welfare aid.

Goldman Sachs Sukuk Row May Dent Industry Lure: Islamic Finance

By Dana El Baltaji - Dec 21, 2011 5:00 AM ET

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS), the fifth biggest U.S. bank by assets, has become entangled in a debate about how Shariah compliant its $2 billion Islamic bond program is, which may diminish the allure of Islamic debt.

Goldman Sachs’ sukuk program, blessed by eight of the world’s top scholars, is criticized by some Islamic advisers for not ensuring the debt will be traded at par value as mandated by Islamic law. Advisers including Riyadh-based Mohammed Khnifer of Edcomm Group Banker’s Academy in New York and Dubai-based Harris Irfan at Cordoba Capital have also said it’s unclear on how Goldman will use the funds it raises.

  121. Accountability Lost: Benghazi

    by Brandon Webb · March 18, 2013 · Posted In: Op-Ed

The September 11th, 2012 attack on the State Department compound in Benghazi, Libya is important, and should be studied because in the big picture it represents a failed foreign policy that spans across both Bush and Obama Presidencies.

America does not have a clear strategic objective when it comes to foreign diplomacy, and in fact our current foreign affairs are rife with hypocrisy. Two clear examples of this: we are supposedly in a “War on Terror,” yet we clandestinely support terrorists like MEK in Iran, and weapons transfers into Syria. The latter is sure to put weapons into Syria freedom fighters, some who are engaged under the al Qaeda flag. How long will it take for those weapons to be pointed back at US Special Ops forces?

In Libya, Gaddafi was known to be cooperating with the United States behind closed doors. One minute he’s a covert friend, and declared an enemy the next.

“Who in the current administration turned Gaddafi from green to red?”, a senior State Department official said to me. This question and many others still need to be asked.

  125. Syrian Rebels Trained by U.S. Advisors in Jordan?

CNN and other media sources have just run a news story regarding the training of Syrian fighters in neighboring Jordan by United States personnel.

    From CNN:

“Syrian rebels claim that hundreds of their fighters are being given sophisticated-weapons training organized and authorized by the United States at a camp in Jordan.”

Verification of this story is tough as the source is an anonymous spokesperson for the rebels, and when asked by White House reporters on this claim, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney simply stated that the U.S. does not “provide lethal aid to the Syrian opposition.”

Could he be telling the truth? Possibly. Could he have no idea what the truth is? Even more plausible.

What I can tell you for certainty is the existence of the King Abdullah II Special Operations Training Center, or KASOTC, located just North of Amman, Jordan and a mere forty miles from the Syrian border. For those of you not familiar with KASOTC, it is the number one special operations training center in the entire Middle East. The development of the facility itself was instigated by SOCCENT (U.S. Special Operations Command – Central) in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Since the training center opened its doors in 2009, the group responsible for providing the training cadre and course material was not the Department of Defense but actually a private organization out of Maryland by the name of ViaGlobal Group. The two-dozen or so training cadre are all private contractors who almost exclusively come from the U.S. Army Special Forces and Delta Force communities.
