    Storing Digital Data in DNA
Technique One Day May Replace Hard Drives as Web Leads to Information Deluge

Companies, governments and universities face an enormous challenge storing the ever-growing flood of digitized information, the videos, books, movies and songs sent over the Internet.

Some experts have looked for answers in biology. In recent years, they have found ways to encode trademarks in cells and poetry in bacteria, as well as store snippets of music in the genetic code of micro-organisms. But these biological things eventually die.

By contrast, DNA—the molecule that contains the genetic instructions for all living things—is stable, durable and dense. Because DNA isn't alive, it could sit passively in a storage device for thousands of years.

Among today's data-storage devices, magnetic tapes can degrade within a decade, while hard disks are expensive and need a constant supply of electricity to hold their information, creating huge need for power for the "data farms" behind cloud computing.

DNA could hold vastly more information than the same surface volume of a disk drive—a cup of DNA theoretically could store about 100 million hours of high-definition video.

I found out this afternoon that my daughter's friend is getting picked on because he's not exactly what we might call masculine. He loves theater and dance. This is one of the things he has in common with my daughter. He's among her best friends.

He woke me up from my nap this afternoon, yet neglected to tell me that he came by for some ballet shoes my daughter ordered for him. I brought in the mail. I honestly don't try to be intimidating, but when I shake anyone's hand, I don't give a nice soft handshake. Wasn't raised that way.

My daughter came home about an hour later. She let me know Andrew had come by for ballet shoes. I didn't know.

If someone picks on that kid I'll have to kick their ass. He's a sweet kid and my daughter adores him. That's enough for me.

The only thing I've got going for me is an exit option for my family and a couple nickles to ensure they are able to make it out in the world.

It's gotten to the point that I need to get the wife, daughter, and son to prepare their individual bugout bags. The EU passports were a wonderful idea, Skip! I would not have thought of that.

India's radical Hindu nationalist party governing Mumbai has handed out kitchen knives and chili powder to women following a gang rape in the capital New Delhi that ignited a national debate on the best way to tackle sex crimes.

The Shiv Sena party, an ally of the main opposition BJP, said it had handed out 21,000 knives with three-inch blades to women in the city and surrounding areas and plans to distribute 100,000.

Mumbai police said they were examining the knives and considering legal action.

"This is a symbolic gesture," said Shiv Sena spokesman Rahul Narvekar, adding that a knife shorter than six inches in length does not fit the definition of a weapon. The party also handed out small bags of chili powder - apparently to throw into an attacker's eyes.

"It's only to pass a signal to eve-teasers, anti-social elements and perpetrators of crime against women that women are empowered and they can take care of themselves," Narvekar said.

Eve-teasing is a euphemism for molesting women.

    Feel constant fear and danger
They need to be saved before it’s too late
In the eyes of every stranger
    Sometimes it seems enemies
Are not very far away and I wanna say

    Show me a warrior’s soul
Let me reach into your heart
Let me see and feel the fire
That I can be a fighter
    Become a warrior too

Every star wonders where you are
Are you trapped and still alive
    I’ve tried to get through
    I’m needing you
To let me know that you survived
    Sometimes it seems the enemies
    Are not so far away
    And I don’t wanna stay

    Show me a warrior’s soul
Let me reach into your heart
Let me see and feel the fire
That I can be a fighter
    Become a warrior too
    Just like you

Don’t let our dream come true
    Become a nightmare
    Oh, please don’t
    I’m depending on you
    To come and save me
    Come on now
You said you’d always love me
    I need to know

    Show me a warrior’s soul
Let me reach into your heart
Let me see and feel the fire

  126. A few days ago I heard Michael Medved mention that the thing the left does wrong is try to solve moral or personal type problems with material solutions. I thought it was a good nutshell definition. Of course mankind in general will try this, but on a gov. level its pretty destructive.

lots of winter weather coming in here. heavy assed sleet. the roads are getting rough around here. Fortunately everyone is home, warm and safe. Just wrapping up the last call of the day/week. May join the wife at some neighbors later on. If they have baileys, I'm there in the blink of an eye. I'll leave my bottle at home, but would drap along a few cool beers.

really sweet guy. married a gold digger, they had a beautiful little girl and his wife took him for every nickle he'd ever made and kept his daughter from seeing him. Very sad story. It broke the man. I watched it happen. Billy Francis was a genuinely decent guy. I gave him my boonie hat what we came back from Somalia. Big voodoo in those boonie hats from deployments.
