Unhitched: the Trial of Christopher Hitchens, By Richard Seymour

Sectarian and mean-spirited, this far-left attack on the late contrarian author fails to convince

Seymour's own, wholly undefended pieties, which merely recite the litany of the left church, reassure him of Hitchens's shiftiness, of his keeping bad company, of his mendacity, treachery and worse. But it was once a precept of the left that bringing down any tyrant was a Good Thing. When the Iraq war turned into the public murder of Shia by Sunni, the occasion was ready-made for Hitchens's version of what Seymour calls his "theophobia". Alternatively, you might say that Hitchens was perfectly consistent. This little book is 134 pages long. The author shouldn't have done it. It is paltry and it is trivially abusive. Its subject was as eloquent, cultivated, exuberant, unstoppable, sheerly gigantic a journalist as British or American politics has known since George Orwell or Walter Lippmann. He can't be cursed into obscurity.

An Egyptian court today sentenced 21 people to death after they were involved in a riot following a football match in which 74 people were killed.

The controversial verdict prompted further bloodshed, as 22 people were killed during reactionary riots outside the Mediterranean city of Port Said's main jail today.

Angry relatives of those sentenced tried to storm the prison to free the defendants, shooting dead two police officers, according to reports.

Egyptian security officials said the military had been deployed to the city, where most of those sentenced are from, as police became embroiled in violent clashes with protestors

  20. Seymour is certainly master of the records; he knows the work closely and cites it scrupulously. But his headlong, foam-flecked interpretation, voiced in a manner recklessly close to Hitchens's own but without the grace, the wit, the tearing high spirits and the faultless ear for the fall of a cadence of his great original, becomes merely tedious, repetitive and unconvincing.

  24. http://www.larouchepub.com/pr/2009/091123callahan_reduce_pop.html

Nov. 23, 2009 (EIRNS)—A book published this year by Daniel Callahan, the senior surviving American agent of the old British eugenics and population-reduction movements, is being used as a manifesto to lead the charge in the current showdown over health care legislation, to establish British-designed genocidal policies in the United States. In his book, Taming the Beloved Beast: How Medical Technology costs are Destroying Our Health Care System, Callahan openly reveals that the reason the British are demanding the implementation of the Obama administration's proposals for health care reform, is to induce the United States to commit national suicide.

Callahan founded the pro-euthanasia Hastings Center 40 years ago and still maintains a stable of murder advocates at Hastings, including Hastings Center Fellow Ezekiel Emanuel and other Obama health-care advisors.

Callahan bases his sophist argument on the false premise that modern health care is too expensive to keep the population alive. The implementation of his program is geared to end forever the progress of science and technology; to erase America's unique optimism; to cancel the idea of the sacredness of human life; and to make all doctors employees of a dictatorship committed to killing the elderly, as the world enters a permanent Dark Age.

  53. Gun Laws and the Fools of Chelm:

    by David Mamet

Rarely do I find a treatise which seems to expresses my personal thoughts and feelings even better than I could put into words. This is not because I am a superior writer--far from it--but it is rare that I find a piece written by another in which no light exists between my position and theirs. this is one such piece.

David Mamet is a writer, director and playwright, and this piece was published today in Newsweek's online blog, The Daily Beast. It is an important piece, and fairly outlines the divide between those who would tell others what they "need," and what they "can't have" in violation of what we all cherish; the constitution.

  55. The Obama Doctrine: Is he an Imperialist With a Little Foot, or Just an Old-Fashioned Appeaser?

Here comes Ross Douthat, trying to sort out Obama’s foreign policy. He’s got the right idea: watch the actions, add them up, toss with just enough realism-speak, and voila! An Obama Doctrine.

Douthat rightly, I think, starts by saying that the Hagel and Brennan nominations to head the Pentagon and the CIA are good starting points for analysis, because they represent what he intends to do. And he’s got the major themes right, too:

Yeah, I've just been reading this - some really good comments.

"I think we will come to a point where as a senior citizen, your health
care will only be approved by a government bureaucrat is if you behave
according to the government's desires: no smoking, excessive drinking,
or drugs; meet their BMI tables; etc."

    Yes, that's what I think
will happen. But first the public has to learn to despise the people
who aren't going to be treated so that no one cares what happens to
them. So that's why you are supposed to start shaming them. It isn't
they who are being treated - it's you. You are learning to despise
fellow citizens. Obese - yuck, no don't keep them alive.
But, see, obesity has been redefined which is why there is now an epidemic. Overweight yes, obese, no.

    ReplyDelete
  57. ChicagoBlue4:36 PM

And a while back Holder gave a speech about using shaming towards gun owners, stating how well it worked on smokers. Making them "cower in shame in the cold to smoke" - he wants gun owners to be seen as icky and creepy.

Shatkin, the director of undergraduate studies in child and adolescent mental health at New York University, said that young people are naturally impulsive and that their brains “are engineered to take risks,” making them ill suited for handling guns.

“There are lots of ways to teach responsibility to a kid,” Dr. Shatkin said. “You don’t need a gun to do it.”

I'm trying a different tactic though. I explained to him when he doesn't do what we ask, then I have to do it. He is defiant, and I explained it again. I didn't yell at him, but gave him a hug instead. I explained we're all on the same team and we need to work together. This is what I was taught in the military. We leave no one behind. That covers death and dishonor. Neither death or dishonor are on my plate and that will never change.

DUBLIN (AP) - A license to drive drunk? Some small-town politicians think it's just the tonic for rural Ireland.

Councilmen in Kerry, southwest Ireland, have passed a motion this week asking the government to create a permit that would allow isolated farmers the ability to drink a few pints and then return home in their car, or on their tractor, without fear of being busted.

Its backers say the measure is needed to combat an epidemic of boredom and depression on farms ever since Ireland imposed tough new blood-alcohol limits on drivers in 2011.

But Justice Minister Alan Shatter has shot down the proposal during a speech in parliament Thursday as "grossly irresponsible."

And a chorus of critics, including many in Kerry, has dismissed the idea as both dangerous and impossible to enforce.

Rangel’s equality argument for the draft is dubious. If we reinstate the draft, it would still be true that only a small percentage of Americans would ever actually serve in combat during wartime and take the risk of “making the ultimate sacrifice.” Even during World War II, only about 16 million Americans served in the armed forces out of a population of 132 million in 1940. And only a minority of the 16 million served in combat positions. Under Rangel’s proposal, the burden of combat duty would still fall on a very small fraction of the population: those unlucky enough to be between the ages of 18 and 25 whenever a war happens to occur. The big difference is that the small group that bears the burden will be selected by force rather than choice. Coerced inequality is no improvement over inequality created by voluntary choice. At least in the latter case, the government has a strong incentive to adequately compensate servicemembers for the risks they take, if only because they would face manpower shortages otherwise. Unequal risk of death is partially offset by extra pay and benefits and by the attractions of military life to those who find it appealing. Draftees get far less in the way of compensation for the inequality imposed on them.

Only about 16 million? Well let's see.. that is over 12% of the population at that time. Probably close to a quarter of the male population. Compare that to the less than 1% who serve today. No wonder most Americans are so disconnected from our warriors.

    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-berlusconi-mussolini-20130128,0,6485860.story

ROME — Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been condemned by Jewish groups after he defended fascist dictator Benito Mussolini at an event commemorating victims of the Nazi Holocaust.

Speaking on Sunday on the sidelines of an event in Milan marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Berlusconi also defended the Italian wartime dictator's decision to ally with Adolf Hitler.

"It's difficult now to put yourself in the shoes of people who were making decisions at that time," said Berlusconi, 76, who is campaigning ahead of elections in February.

"Obviously the government of that time, out of fear that German power might lead to complete victory, preferred to ally itself with Hitler's Germany rather than opposing it," he said. "As part of this alliance, there were impositions, including combating and exterminating Jews. The racial laws were the worst fault of Mussolini as a leader, who in so many other ways did well."
