Bang A Gong

For many years
you were patient with them.
By your Spirit
you warned them
through your prophets.
Yet they paid no attention,
so you gave them into the hands
of the neighboring peoples.

So I'm sitting on the bench at the foot of my bed, typing on the little hooplewanky at 1:30 AM because Grandpa is in the bathroom sick as a dog. He says his lunch didn't taste quite right. I guess not, because he's having a really rough night. Of course when he's up I am too.

I may be here a while.

not good Grammy. He may need some medical care. It sounds like he may be dehydrated at this point. Can he keep down water or perhaps a bannana?

hydration and raise his blood sugar a little bit would help. very basic, crude field technique but usually works. The first thing I would have done with my troops back in the day.

Strikes, protests hit much of European Union

They are Effing broke and refuse to face the facts. When you are broke, you are broke. I know. I've been there. Poor bastards are going to have to face reality sooner or later. It's going to hurt like hell, but facts are facts. I'm sorry for their situation, but it is what it is.

The horrible, nasty little secret is that we're in worse shape than any nation in the EU and the waiter is now going to bring us the check. It's been getting papered over for nearly 40 years and we're going to be left with the check.

People have no idea how bad things can get financially. It's not terribly complicated. It's simple math. Pete Townsend was wrong, one and one DOES in fact make two.

    Conclusion of Austere Challenge 12

    Published on: November 14, 2012

Yesterday (13 November 2012), US European Command and the Israel Defense Forces successfully concluded Austere Challenge 2012 (AC12), a large-scale air defense exercise that included both field training and command post simulations. Beginning in late October, the exercise was aimed at improving interoperability between the US and Israeli militaries and was conducted as part of a long-standing strategic agreement between USEUCOM and the IDF to hold bi-lateral training exercises on a regular basis. AC12 was cooperatively planned for more than two years, and included approximately 3,500 US personnel with more than 1,000 deployed to Israel. A similar number of IDF personnel participated.

“Austere Challenge 12 was tremendously successful on several levels.” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin, Third Air Force commander and commander of Joint Defense Forces-Israel during AC12. “We made great strides in improving our tactics and our command and control processes. Most importantly though, we reinforced our already strong US-IDF relationships. From our most senior commanders to most junior enlisted troops, we proved once again that there is clearly no substitute for training side by side with our Israeli partners.”

Wealthy Unload Assets Amid Expectation Of Higher Taxes

I did. The beginning of October and put into my daughter's college fund. Provided she selects a state college, tuition, books, and living expenses (meaning dorm life) are paid for. Anything that is left over she can keep. If she insists on getting an apartment, then she's going to have to also consider getting a job. I simply handed her a bank book for her 18th birthday and told her there would be no more checks. Anything left over she can tuck into her pocket.

I'd much rather give it to her than the government.

It's all perfectly legal and well within IRS guidelines. I'll pay the cost basis for my 2012 taxes, but that's it and there ain't no more.

    2012 taxes vs. 2013 taxes, I saved about $10 for every $100 I sold off. .

she doesn't realize it, but she's getting a second education that will serve her well her entire life. Managing and maintenance of money is hard work but it pays off tremendously in the long run. She's a very bright young lady and I have complete confidence in her to do the right thing with that money. She realizes how hard I worked to earn it and won't squander it.

The photograph above shows a rebel with an apparently complete (tube, gripstock and battery) SA-16. Another photo shows another rebel with an apparently complete SA-24, one of the most advanced heat-seekers in the world. This might be the only time an SA-24 MANPADS has been photographed outside of state control.

I hear the UPS truck. My first pipe should be arriving shortly. Along with some Kentucky Bold, which oddly enough is mostly a Virginia dark blend of tobacco with some Kentucky Gold Leaf to balance it. More pipes on the way tomorrow from my other benefactor. I didn't even buy cigarettes today in anticipation of my pipe(s) and 'baccy arriving.

just checked on ammo. they're out of PMC. They had a great deal on it this summer. I'm sorry I didn't get another 1,000 rounds. I think I paid around $300 for 1,000 rounds for South Korean ammo. Never had a single problem with it before. It's good dependable ammo. It's almost doubled in price. Gah!

the pipe and Kentucky Gold Bold have shown up. I've secured my tobacco in the garage fridge and taken the pipe for a first run. Very nice, very mellow smoke. It's a beautiful pipe actually. I think I actually smoke less, but work more on keeping the pipe lit during the process. I can always scare up some golden leaf tobacco around this parts. It grows everywhere around here.

It's probably been 15 years since I've smoked a pipe. Now it doesn't seem pretentious, but certainly makes me seem eccentric. That suits me just fine.

If you seek an epitaph for America's longest war, consider one bleak, pitiful sentence from an Associated Press report a few weeks ago:

Kabul, Afghanistan (AP) – A newly recruited Afghan village policeman opened fire on his American allies on Friday, killing two U.S. service members minutes after they handed him his official weapon in an inauguration ceremony.

In the old days of the Great Game, the Pashtun warrior was known for his low cunning. There's still a market for that: Just ask the chaps who broke into the pathetically misnamed Camp Bastion last month, killed a Marine commander, and destroyed a squadron's worth of Harriers in the most devastating attack on U.S. airpower since the Tet Offensive. But, for the most part, devious wiles are superfluous to requirements as America and its allies enter their twelfth year in Afghanistan. The village policeman is more typical. No cunning, no plotting required. The Americans fly to your country, come to your village, train you, and pay you. And then they give you the gun. And then you shoot them.

The U.S. Government's Growing Appetite for Google Users' Data

    http://www.technologyreview.com/view/507441/the-us-governments-growing-appetite-for-google-users-data/

The search and ads company today released figures revealing that it was asked to hand over user data 7,969 times by US agencies in the first six months of 2012 - an increase of 26 percent over the previous six months. That continues a long established trend in the figures released in Google's twice-yearly transparency report and charted above. The 7,969 requests asked for data from a total of 16,281 user accounts, and ninety percent of the requests were complied with.
