The [Free] SPEECH Act (Securing the Protection of our Enduring and Established Constitutional Heritage Act) – a law which initiated and promoted by Rachel Ehrenfeld over the last two years – was signed into law by the President Barack Obama.
This new law will uphold First Amendment protections for American free expression by guarding American authors and publishers from the enforcement of frivolous foreign libel suits filed in countries that do not have our strong free speech protections.
No longer will libel tourists be able to suppress the rights of American scholars, writers and journalists to speak, write and publish freely in print and on the Internet.
* The SPEECH Act is of monumental importance to national security and the protection of free speech.
* The SPEECH Act allows Americans to expose the enemies of freedom and democracy without fear of foreign intimidation.
* The SPEECH Act protects all Americans in the manner that the First Amendment was designed to guarantee.
One victim of libel tourism was Dr. Paul L. Williams, who exposed that Adnan El Shukrijumah and five other terrorists were enrolled at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, where they gained access to the school’s nuclear reactor.
A trial has been scheduled for October in Canada, in defiance of Canadian law .
Another victim is New York Times columnist Joe Sharkey, who wrote about his plight in Brazil following an airplane crash.
In addition to Ms. Ehrenfeld, the hero of the new legislation is Dr. Hugh Cort, a psychiatrist from Alabama.
When the lobbying group and lawyers secured by Ms. Ehrenfeld were unable to gain the support of the Republican members of the Judiciary Committee, Dr. Cort, at his own expense, traveled to Washington DC to meet with Senators Sessions, Coburn, Cornyn, Hatch, and Grassley.
Because of his long-time support of conservative issues, Dr. Cort succeeded in gaining the support of all five senators.
The bill cleared the Judiciary Committee, sorely because of the Herculean effort of this one great American.
All those who cherish the Constitution and the uniquely American Right of Free Speech should offer Dr. Cort a heart-felt salute.
