Australia: Film festival 'right to reject Israel boycott'

A Federal Labor MP has applauded the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) for standing up to British director Ken Loach, who has pulled his film from the festival's program. Loach has withdrawn his film Looking for Eric, which was sold out for its July 30 opening night, in protest at the festival's decision to keep accepting money from Israel.

He had demanded that the festival reject the Israeli funding to protest against "illegal occupation of Palestinian land", saying that he would then allow his film to be shown.

The Israeli funding he referred to was the Israeli Embassy's sponsorship of Tatia Rosenthal to visit the festival to answer questions about her animation feature $9.99.

But MIFF organisers say they will not bow to "blackmail" from Loach or from anyone else. Their position is in stark contrast to the Edinburgh film festival, which agreed to Loach's demands in a similar dispute in May.

In a statement released last week, MIFF chief executive Richard Moore said his film festival was an independent arts event and would not back down in the face of political pressure.

"MIFF understands that that this issue is a particularly emotional one for people, but we will not participate in a boycott against the state of Israel, just as we would not contemplate boycotting films from China or other nations involved in difficult long-standing historical disputes," he said.

Germany's Spies Refuted the 2007 NIE Report

President Obama has committed to trying diplomacy to stop the Iranian bomb. Time, though, is on the mullahs' side, not least because so much of it was wasted after the 2007 U.S. National Intelligence Estimate made the improbable case that Iran had suspended its nuclear weapons program in 2003. This assessment not only contradicted previous U.S. intelligence consensus but -- as recent court documents show -- also the conclusions of a key U.S. ally with excellent sources in Iran -- Germany.

The Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Germany's foreign intelligence agency, has amassed evidence of a sophisticated Iranian nuclear weapons program that continued beyond 2003. This usually classified information comes courtesy of Germany's highest state-security court. In a 30-page legal opinion on March 26 and a May 27 press release in a case about possible illegal trading with Iran, a special national security panel of the Federal Supreme Court in Karlsruhe cites from a May 2008 BND report, saying the agency "showed comprehensively" that "development work on nuclear weapons can be observed in Iran even after 2003."

Saakashvili to Share Power, Expand Vote

TBILISI, Georgia -- Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili is expected to unveil Monday moves to share more power and make elections more democratic in an attempt to mollify his critics and begin a comeback.

The address, before the country's parliament just days before a morale-boosting visit from U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, follows three months of street protests by the president's political opponents, who continue to demand his resignation after losing a disastrous war against Russia last summer. His critics accuse him of increasing authoritarianism, of monopolizing the state media for his own ends and of using the police to repress protesters.

In the speech, parts of which have been reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Saakashvili pledges to set new local elections, to promise bigger media space for his adversaries and to offer the opposition seats on some decision-making bodies inside government.

Talks on Honduras crisis break down
A last-ditch effort to resolve Honduras' three-week political crisis appeared to stall Saturday as negotiators for the interim government suggested it would be up to congress and the courts to accept a seven-point proposal that calls for the immediate return of ousted President Manuel Zelaya.

Vilma Morales, one of the negotiators for interim President Roberto Micheletti, told the Associated Press that her team lacked the authority to accept the proposal made by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias.

In addition, Micheletti's chief of staff, Cesar Caceres, told The Miami Herald his boss was unlikely to accept demands that Zelaya be allowed to return without facing a series of charges, including abuse of power and treason.

US, India expected to sign defence pact on Monday
The United States and India are expected to sign an agreement on Monday that would take a major step towards allowing the sale of sophisticated U.S. arms to the South Asian nation, three senior U.S. officials said.

Known as an "end-use monitoring" agreement and required by U.S. law for such weapons sales, the pact would let Washington check that India was using any arms for the purposes intended and preventing the technology from leaking to others.

Intelligence-Led Policing - Beyond the fusion center
Becoming an intelligence-led police (ILP) organization is a complicated and arduous task. Still, many police executives believe that simply building a fusion center—a real or virtual multi-agency informational clearinghouse—makes them “intelligence-led,” when, in fact, much more is required. To become an ILP your organization must change from top to bottom. A combination of threat assessment, information collection and analysis, consistently applied to command level decision-making, is the true formula for success.

The ILP concept was first developed in the United Kingdom and then flourished in Australia, where it has been responsible for solving significant criminal problems. Temple University’s Prof. Jerry Radcliffe, a former UK police officer, is largely responsible for bringing the concept to the United States.
THE OBAMANABLE WHORE OF GRAMSCI

S. Steven Powell wrote in his 1987 book, Covert Cadre, that the revolutionary activity advocated by Marxist Antonio Gramsci involved the need to “infiltrate autonomous institutions—schools, media, churches, public-interest groups—so as radically to transform the culture, which determines the environment in which political and economic policies are played out.” Or, as Carl Boggs, author of Gramsci’s Marxism wrote, “the role of revolutionary theory is to create the foundation of a new socialist order precisely through the negation and transcendence of bourgeois society.” This “transcendence of bourgeois society,” Boggs explains, was the basis for Gramsci’s first priority—“the multi-dimensional transformation of civil society.”

The key to Gramsci’s formula for revolution centered on the idea of breaking what he called the “hegemony” or mind-control exercised by the ruling capitalists over the masses. Bourgeois societies were ruled, Gramsci believed, by educating the citizenry that their accommodation of the moral, political, and cultural values defined by the governing system was in their best interests. Hence, Gramsci designed a “reversal strategy” that would silently challenge the existing culture and value-systems that dominated bourgeois governance.

That is to say, his formula was based on an ideological struggle that would transform a whole range of activities in civil society, including Judeo-Christian values, the family, schools, unions, and politics and popular trust in the existing government. There are ten easy steps toward a progressive-socialist-Marxist civil society: change the popular consensus; destroy Christianity, the traditional family, and existing social mores; transform the culture; install a radical Left mind-control; attain political power; impose strict control of the military and law enforcement; restrict freedom; socialize the economy; erase American sovereignty; and embrace a world without borders.

Havasupi organize protest of Grand Canyon uranium mining

The Native American Havasupi tribe have invited the public to join them, on July 25th and 26th, to protest at Red Bluff, Arizona, a Havasupi sacred site threatened by Denison Mining's plan to reopen its uranium mine, Arizona One, near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Most news sources were reporting, as of 07.19.2009, that Denison is only one Arizona air quality permit away from reopening the mine closed 20 years ago.

AUSTRALIA: Uranium miners fight for trust
Western Australia (WA) uranium miners need to work to gain the trust of local residents as they transport yellowcake through suburban areas, Energy and Minerals Australia (EMA) managing director Chris Davis told MINING DAILY.According to Davis, it will take time for WA residents to be at ease with yellowcake transport, unlike residents of other states or territories with established uranium industries.“People in the Northern Territory and South Australia are already very comfortable with the production and transport of yellowcake,” he said.

Bannerman is continuing with resource extension drilling and is well advanced with a feasibility study into an open pit uranium mining operation at Etango.

Radioactive leak is feared

An underground container that holds about half of the world’s supply of radium may be leaking into groundwater in northwestern Niagara County, an advisory group to federal regulators warns.

The Army Corps of Engineers, the federal agency responsible for investigating an area in the towns of Lewiston and Porter holding leftovers from the Manhattan Project, has found uranium contamination beneath ground level in portions of a former federal weapons site.

But corps officials insist there are no leaks in a 10-acre cell, known as the Interim Waste Containment Structure, constructed in the mid- 1980s on the 191-acre Niagara Falls Storage Site as a temporary container for various radioactive wastes and other radiological materials.

Those substances include uranium and about half the world’s supply of radium.
