Israel annexed the city in 1967 and proclaimed it to be Israel’s eternal, undivided capital.
Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as their capital.

Successive U.S. Administrations have maintained that the parties must determine the fate of Jerusalem in negotiations. H.Con.Res. 60, June 10, 1997, and S.Con.Res. 21, May20, 1997, called on the Administration to affirm that Jerusalem must remain the undivided capital of Israel.

Congress has repeatedly prohibited official U.S. government business with the PA in Jerusalem and the use of appropriated funds to create U.S. government offices in Israel to conduct business with the PA and allows Israel to be recorded as the place of birth of U.S. citizens born in Jerusalem.


These provisions are again in H.R. 2764, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008, passed in both houses on December 19, 2007.

The State Department does not recognize Jerusalem, Israel as a place of birth for passports ....because the U.S. government does not recognize all of Jerusalem as part of Israel.

2006: Israel's Olmert Would Split Jerusalem in Border Plan

JERUSALEM — Breaking an old taboo, Israel's new government is drawing up plans to divide the holy city of Jerusalem by giving up Arab neighborhoods, an architect of the program said.

Still, Israel would keep Jerusalem's Old City with its shrines sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians alike — an unacceptable plan to Palestinians, particularly if carried out unilaterally.

Otniel Schneller, in interviews with The Associated Press this week, outlined the government's plan to separate from the Palestinians and draw Israel's final borders by 2010, providing the clearest indication yet of what Jerusalem is likely to look like and how Israel plans to abandon much of the West Bank.

But the real problem is the ISG's refusal to acknowledge or call for an end to the Israeli occupation, instead only urging new negotiations aimed at an unspecified resolution. Unlike the report's explicit call to "return the Golan Heights" to Syria, there is no call for Israel to end its occupation and "return the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem" to the Palestinians. Reassertion of UN Resolutions 242 and 338, which U.S. and Israeli routinely do is insufficient. Further, the proposed negotiations would once again be under the control of the U.S., thus insuring that U.S. policies would dominate any outcome.

2007: Olmert hints Israel may be willing to split up Jerusalem

The Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, hinted yesterday that he might be willing to split Jerusalem, by questioning for the first time whether certain Palestinian neighbourhoods needed to be part of what Israel officially sees as its undivided capital.

Mr Olmert's tentative – and reversible – step towards a possible compromise on the future of the city, an essential requirement for any final two-state solution to the conflict, was the first he has personally made in public.

It came as the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, went out of her way to emphasise that the forthcoming Middle East conference in Annapolis, Maryland – which she sees as a stepping stone to full negotiations on a final deal – needed to be substantive. "Frankly, it is time for the establishment of a Palestinian state," she said after meeting the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, in Ramallah.

JERUSALEM -- Two senior Israeli politicians, including the prime minister's closest ally, talked openly Monday about dividing Jerusalem, signaling a possible shift in Israeli opinion about one of the Mideast's most contentious issues.

The dispute over Jerusalem has derailed negotiations in the past, and the latest comments come at a time when Israeli and Palestinian teams are trying to agree on principles guiding future peace talks.

THE ROOTS OF TEMPLE DENIAL

SIFTING THROUGH tons of rubble that had been illicitly dug up on the Temple Mount by the Muslim Wakf and stealthily dumped into a landfill, biblical archeologist Dr. Gabriel Barkay, professor at Bar-Ilan University, is in the midst of the project of a lifetime. I put the question of Temple denial to him.

"This denial of the historical, spiritual and archeological connections of the Jews to the Temple Mount is something new," he says. "There was always talk about the temple of Solomon in Jerusalem - called the 'praise of Jerusalem'- in Arabic literature, in Islamic literature. This new idea of Temple denial is due to the Arabic fear of Jewish aspirations connected to the Temple Mount. It is part of something I call the 'cultural intifada.'"

Barkay says the change took place in the 1990s: "In the Washington DC think tanks surrounding president Bill Clinton, it was understood that the Temple Mount was the crux of the problem of the Middle East conflict. These think tanks decided that if there could be 'split sovereignty' on the Temple Mount, then split sovereignty could also be achieved over the entire land of Palestine. So they suggested that in a future agreement, the Temple Mount would be split horizontally. That is to say that whatever is above ground, the part that includes the shrines of the Muslims, would be under Palestinian sovereignty. Whatever is underground, which would include the remnants of the Temple of the Jews, would be under Israeli sovereignty.

"It's a brilliant idea, an excellent idea, but totally idiotic from a practical point of view. You cannot have a building standing with its foundations in another country. You cannot have a building with the infrastructure and the plumbing in another country. And you cannot have sovereignty on the subground without having accessibility to the subground, because the accessibility is from above ground. The whole thing was stupid."

Global Muslim Brotherhood Daily Report:

An Egyptian blogger (SM) has conducted an interview with Mohammed Habib, the deputy leader of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, in which he confirms the existence of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood and that there is a “relationship” between the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Egyptian Brotherhood. According to the interview:

SM: Is there a Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S.?

Mohamed Habib: I would say yes. There are Muslim Brotherhood members there.

SM: Then what are they doing there?

Mohamed Habib: No, there are already existing institutions; there are laws and a constitution that they operate under in order to have a role in serving the American society. They are part of the American society and they want to an active positive role in it, and a part of that is to spread a positive image of Islam along with its values, culture, history and teachings.

SM: This is naturally very important. Who represents you in the US?

Mohamed Habib: Well, there are there those who do represent us, who do that role.

SM: But it’s not CAIR, right? The Council for American Islamic Relations? Many people say that they are your front. Other people say that it’s ISNA. But back to CAIR, some people from the Muslim Brotherhood have denied having a connection with CAIR. Do they really represent you?

Mohamed Habib: Ehh, this is a sensitive subject, and it’s kind of problematic, especially after 9/11 …

SM: For them to say that there is a relationship between you two?

Mohamed Habib: Yes. You can say that.

Only ten days ago, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood website posted a statement denying that the group has any representation in the U.S. and also staing that it has “absolutely has no organizational links, ties, or associations with any of the Islamic organizations in the U.S.”, including CAIR which had it origins in the U.S. Hamas infrastructure and is part of the “Palestine Committee” of the U.S. Brotherhood. CAIR, as well as all the other U.S. Muslim Brotherhood organizations have consistently denied any relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood.

In another part of the interview, Habib blames the poor image of the Muslim Brotherhood partly on the “Zionist-American project” while also acknowledging the public relations effort mounted by the Brotherhood:

SM: The image of the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S. and in other western countries — while we aren’t going to say it’s a bad one — is not the image you would like to portray for yourselves.

Mohamed Habib: That’s true!

SM: Why do you think that is?

Mohamed Habib: There are two parts to that. The first part is related to the tyrannical and oppressive regimes in our countries that try to project a mental image (a really scary and horrifying image) in the minds of the western world that we are against democracy, and freedom, and human rights in general. The other part is the Zionist-American project that upholds double standards and has a special agenda that contradict the interests of our Ummah, and thus finds in the Muslim Brotherhood an obstacle in the way of executing that agenda. Therefore, they unfortunately promote a very wrong and negative image of us. This forces us to act and try to communicate with think tanks and research centers, academics in universities, the people, and the media, whether the local or the international one.

Why was Stephen Coughlin fired from the Pentagon?

JANUARY 2008: Coughlin sacked

Stephen Coughlin, the Pentagon specialist on Islamic law and Islamist extremism, has been fired from his position on the military's Joint Staff. The action followed a report in this space last week revealing opposition to his work for the military by pro-Muslim officials within the office of Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England.

Mr. Coughlin was notified this week that his contract with the Joint Staff will end in March, effectively halting the career of one of the U.S. government's most important figures in analyzing the nature of extremism and ultimately preparing to wage ideological war against it.

He had run afoul of a key aide to Mr. England, Hasham Islam, who confronted Mr. Coughlin during a meeting several weeks ago when Mr. Islam sought to have Mr. Coughlin soften his views on Islamist extremism.

Mr. Coughlin was accused directly by Mr. Islam of being a Christian zealot or extremist "with a pen," according to defense officials. Mr. Coughlin appears to have become one of the first casualties in the war of ideas with Islamism.

The officials said Mr. Coughlin was let go because he had become "too hot" or controversial within the Pentagon.

Misguided Pentagon officials, including Mr. Islam and Mr. England, have initiated an aggressive "outreach" program to U.S. Muslim groups that critics say is lending credibility to what has been identified as a budding support network for Islamist extremists, including front groups for the radical Muslim Brotherhood.

Mr. Coughlin wrote a memorandum several months ago based on documents made public in a federal trial in Dallas that revealed a covert plan by the Muslim Brotherhood, an Egyptian-origin Islamist extremist group, to subvert the United States using front groups. Members of one of the identified front groups, the Islamic Society of North America, has been hosted by Mr. England at the Pentagon.

After word of the confrontation between Mr. Coughlin and Mr. Islam was made public, support for Mr. Coughlin skyrocketed among those in and out of government who feared the worst, namely that pro-Muslim officials in the Pentagon were after Mr. Coughlin's scalp, and that his departure would be a major setback for the Pentagon's struggling efforts to develop a war of ideas against extremism. Blogs lit up with hundreds of postings, some suggesting that Mr. England's office is "penetrated" by the enemy in the war on terrorism.

Kevin Wensing, a spokesman for Mr. England, said "no one in the deputy's office had any input into this decision" by the Joint Staff to end Mr. Coughlin's contract. A Joint Staff spokesman had no immediate comment.

It is indeed saddening that we still talk about the deteriorating situation of the Palestine refugees and their basic rights, while the world celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration. We, therefore, feel that we should reiterate the call made by His Royal Highness Crown Prince El-Hassan from this rostrum for the establishment of a New International Humanitarian Order


In this spirit, my country participated and supported the adoption of the Statute of the International Criminal Court in Rome earlier this year.


Cooperation and coexistence among different religions and ethnic groups requires a formula for dialogue among civilizations and religions to replace the manifestation of conflict and xenophobia, which has emerged and has been spreading lately. Dialogue among religions would bring out common denominations among different beliefs of the world’s peoples and would explain their foundations to the other parties, thereby making it easier for the adherents of such beliefs to understand one another and coexist together.



The desired inter-religious dialogue constitutes the best means to confront the manifestations of animosity and the attempts to distort the image of Islam and Muslims, whether those living in their home countries or those who have migrated to non-Muslim countries. It is necessary to have a deeper understanding of Islam and the Muslims, away form blind bigotism, which leads to unfair generalization about, and the stereotyping of, more than a billion Muslims. From that narrow view, bigotism goes on to animosity towards Islam and the Muslims on the basis of actions committed by a minority, which if far removed from Muslims and the magnanimous precepts of Islam.

1. He must be a descendant of Mohammad through the daughter Fatima
2. He must have the pledge and support of Iraqi (Babylonian) people
3. He must rule the Arabs for 7 years
4. Will have a broad forehead and a pointed nose
5. Will appear to do nothing but work to spread justice and harmony on earth, IOW he will be seen as a uniter and a "man of peace"
6. Must eventually take control of and reign from Jerusalem

7. He must be involved in a peace treaty with Israel which he also later breaks
8. He will be a Prince


My research has shown me that there are a great number of people out there who seem to think this guy really is the Mahdi/Anti-Christ.

Myself, I do not dig those kinds of prognostications and I am not interested in making them, in naming the Anti-Christ or IDing individually every single person place and thing out of biblical prophecies. I think that the endeavor itself goes against the WORD of GOD but that's another lecture entirely. If you are obedient to His Word and working your best to stay in His Will and confessing to Him with your mouth when you fail that, you don't need any hoodoo prognosticating hooplewanky religious performance art crapola. The Helper that was promised to us will provide everything you need to know. That magical crap is nothing compared to the indwelling, it is for lightweights, for Godless amateurs.

Your Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal, President Bob Kerrey, Professor Mustapha Tlili, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening. First of all, I would like to express my profound gratitude to Prince El Hassan for accepting the invitation to share with us his courageous vision of "A Muslim Centrist Platform for Democracy in the Arab World." Prince El Hassan's branch of the Hashemite family is directly descended from the prophet Muhammed, and he occupies a unique place as a spiritual, social, and political leader in the 42nd generation. Your Royal Highness, your participation in this evening's dialogue provides all of us with a rare opportunity to deepen our understanding of the great spiritual tradition of Islam, the contemporary situation in the Arab world, and promising paths to democratic social change, human development, and peace in the Middle East and worldwide.

Prince El Hassan's address has been made possible by a special initiative of the World Policy Institute at the New School University involving dialogues among representatives from the Islamic world, the U.S., and the West. I commend Professor Mustapha Tlili for his leadership in founding and directing these dialogues which began with a very productive meeting in Granada, Spain in 2002. I would also like to thank President Kerrey for the guidance and support he has provided this initiative.

The RBF became a partner in support of Professor Tlili's dialogues project as a result of the Fund's search for ways to respond meaningfully to the challenges that emerged from the events of 9/11. The RBF response to 9/11 has involved support for relief programs and recovery projects in New York City and also several strategic initiatives that have now been integrated into the Fund's new Peace and Security program. For example, the Fund is actively promoting a broad public debate on the U.S. role in the world and on the values and principles that should guide it, and the RBF is also supporting efforts to contribute to the improvement of communication and understanding between Muslim and Western societies.

The Carnegie Corporation and the MacArthur Foundation have joined with the Rockefeller Brothers Fund in supporting Professor Tlili's dialogues. If promising initiatives designed to promote mutual understanding are to be sustained and fully successful, they must be supported by institutions and governments in the Muslim world as well as the West. All of us have both an opportunity and a responsibility to build strong partnerships in this undertaking.

As the world enters a [global] phase in the development of civilization under the impact of technological and economic forces, the peoples and nations of the world have a choice. Under the influence of ancient prejudice, ignorance and narrow self-interest, we can engage in a self-destructive clash of cultures and religions, or recognizing that we share a common humanity and planetary home, we can cooperate and support each other in building an equitable, sustainable, and peaceful global society that respects cultural diversity and accepts pluralism. There is no greater social and spiritual challenge today than the pursuit of the latter goal in our local communities and globally. Tonight's dialogue on the future of the Arab world and on building better relations between the U.S. and the Islamic world is of central importance to this undertaking.

In the 1970s, Andy Statman emerged as a celebrated mandolin player in the “newgrass” movement. In the 1980s, he became a driving force behind the neo-klezmer movement. In the 1990s, he released collections with mandolin-master David Grisman and Itzhak Perlman, and was eventually lauded by The New York Times as “a master of two idioms linked only by their demand for virtuosity and their down-home origins.”

These days, Statman can be found in an unlikely place, playing unlikely music. Over the last four years, the Brooklyn-based clarinet and mandolin virtuoso has played more than 200 times at Congregation Derech Amuno, an eclectic Orthodox shul on Charles Street in Greenwich Village. Many people come expecting to hear him play klezmer or bluegrass, but what they hear at informal performances of the Andy Statman Trio in a long, narrow basement social room often goes way beyond these two genres, featuring chasidic music, blues, jazz and Central Asian music.

“This is the way music should be heard,” said Jason Rosenblatt, a musician from Montreal who has seen Statman in the synagogue four times. “It’s like he’s playing in your own living room.”

Over the next few months, though, the Andy Statman Trio will venture out of the synagogue, first to play at Makor on Manhattan’s Upper West Side on January 29, followed by performances in Berkeley, Los Angeles and San Diego in March. Listeners should prepare to hear a transformed Statman sound.

“My style of playing clarinet and mandolin has completely changed as a result of playing here,” Statman told the Forward this month, soon after completing a three-day recording marathon in the synagogue’s main sanctuary. “There’s an element of kedusha [holiness] playing in the shul. And I like that the audiences here are completely quiet.”

These days Statman — who previously performed jazz versions of chasidic melodies with a quartet of respected jazz musicians —is making music with Jim Whitney, a conservatory-trained bassist with a background in jazz and bluegrass, and Larry Eagle, a percussionist whose resume rivals Statman’s when it comes to exploration of world music. After three solid years of working in this trio, Statman seems to have settled into a new phase of his career and an innovative, entirely personal genre of music. The recordings made at Derech Amuno earlier this month are destined to become two CDs, one of Jewish music on which Statman primarily plays clarinet, and the other of what the musician refers to as his “American stuff” — the bluegrass, blues and jazz played exclusively on mandolin.

“He has what musicians call big ears,” explained Dovid Sears, a longtime friend who is co-producing the two new Statman albums. “He’s interested in everything and ultimately it all finds a place in his own music.”

But, according to Statman’s close friends, his commercial career suffers from his musically adventurous nature. “He’s a forward-looking guy and once he’s played something, he’s on to the next thing,” said Grisman, Statman’s former mandolin teacher and current collaborator. “He’s not going to change his artistic vision so he can have a hit record or better-paying gig. He certainly isn’t going to do something some record producer tells him to do. He’s certainly not looking to make a commercial record.”

Grisman also noted that while he and Statman are both music-business misfits, Statman’s economic situation is made even dicier by the fact that he observes the Sabbath. “Andy’s kind of unmanageable,” Grisman said of Statman, who currently has neither a manager nor a booking agent. “If you take out weekends, you’re not going to really work that much. That’s when the big gigs are. In this business, that’s like giving up 50, 60% of your work — more than that.”

In addition, though Statman has finished recordings for several albums over the last decade, his artistic temperament and record-industry constraints have conspired to keep some of them in the can. They include a second chasidic jazz CD for the small ethnic music label Shanachie that was recorded but never released because Statman was displeased with the mix, as well as “A Shabbos in Nashville,” an album of Sabbath songs sung in Hebrew with bluegrass arrangements for Rounder Records, and a klezmer-chasidic-rock-jazz recording highly-produced by Edward Haber, a radio engineer who has a long association with Statman.

But one CD definitely will make it to listeners: Grisman and Statman currently are finishing a follow-up to their 1995 “Songs of Our Fathers” CD for Grisman’s Acoustic Disc label. Expected to be released this summer, the new recording is all Jewish material but with more of a rock vibe, according to Grisman. Statman says that John Zorn’s Tzadik label is interested in a recording of duets that are Jewish but can also be described as “very wild stuff.”

The new recordings, like the performances at the synagogue on Charles Street, are subject to what by now has become a musical fact of life for Statman and his trio: They never play a given composition the same way twice.

“We’ve developed a very conversational style of playing,” Statman explained, “so we have no arrangements, no sets. We all know the melodies and we just play them and see where they go.”

Synopsis:

At the end of World War I, an Army private who in civilian life is a little Jewish barber, saves the life of the German officer Schultz as the two flee the conquering army. After their plane crashes during their escape, the Jewish barber suffers amnesia and is confined to a hospital during the rise of dictator Adenoid Hynkel. Years later, the barber returns to his shop in the ghetto of a city, unaware that the state is now under the sign of the double cross, that Jews are cruelly persecuted, and that the all powerful ruler of the land is megalomaniac Adenoid Hynkel, to whom the barber bears a striking resemblance.

The barber tries to resist the treachery that he sees going on all around him, but is beaten and arrested with his friend Schultz, who has also spoken out against the persecution of the Jews. Schultz and the barber are sent to a prison camp, and Hynkel, his opposition quelled, plans the invasion of the neighboring country of Osterlich. As Benzini Napaloni, the Dictator of Bacteria, and Hynkel argue over control of Osterlich, Schultz and the barber escape from their prison. On the eve of the invasion of Osterlich, Hynkel is mistaken for the escaped barber and arrested. The barber then takes the place of the dictator on the parade platform and delivers an impassioned plea for human kindness and brotherly love.

Krauthammer is generally correct in his thesis. What we are witnessing is a wild scramble to divide the planet into "spheres of influence". We have already accepted the concept of a "Global village", a world without national borders, a "New world order". Russia intends to rule as much of Europe as the old Soviet Union did. In a few years, when the dust settles, we'll see an African continent split in half, with the North ruled by Saudi Arabia, and the South, a province of China. Europe will be divided between the North American-European Union, and of course, Russia. Obviously China will get most of the Far East. The Middle and Near-East will be divided between Sunni and Shiite Moslem regions with the Iranian based Shiite regime ruling over historic Persia, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. The Saudis will receive the rest of the region, including what is today called "Israel".

NATO's colossal cave-in

Read the first five paragraphs of the NATO statement on the Russian invasion of Georgia and you will find not a hint of who invaded whom. The statement is almost comically evenhanded. "We deplore all loss of life," it declared, as if deploring a bus accident. And, it "expressed its grave concern over the situation in Georgia." Situation, mind you.

It's not until paragraph six that NATO, a 26-nation alliance with 900 million people and nearly half of the world's GDP, unsheathes its mighty sword, boldly declaring "Russian military action" - not aggression, not invasion, not even incursion, but "action" - to be "inconsistent with its peacekeeping role."

Having launched a fearsome tautology Moscow's way, what further action does the Greatest Alliance Of All Time take? Cancels the next NATO-Russia Council meeting.

That's it. No dissolution of the G-8. No blocking of Russian entry to the World Trade Organization. No suspension of participation in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics (15 miles from the Georgian border). No statement of support for the Saakashvili government.

Remember: At issue is not military action, only measures - painless for the West - that would significantly affect Russia. In Soviet days, Russia didn't care because it was at the center of a self-enclosed autarkic system that included 15 Soviet republics, all of Eastern Europe and a collection of overseas colonies. With these all gone, post-Soviet Russia is infinitely more dependent on the international system. It has political/economic pressure points. Yet with Georgia occupied, its infrastructure stripped and its capital under siege, NATO pushed not one of them.

Russian TV is already trumpeting "a crack in the NATO camp." More like a chasm. Writing in The Times of London, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband even opposes expelling Russia from the G-8 - a perfectly calibrated and long-overdue measure. And a German diplomat says the Georgia issue should not have been brought to NATO in the first place, but instead to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, a completely toothless consultative body, and to the United Nations, where inaction is guaranteed by the Russian veto.

To their credit, the French tried to do something. Unfortunately, President Nicolas Sarkozy was snookered by Moscow. Article V of the ceasefire agreement he brokered, allowing Russia the right to "implement additional security measures" within the borders of Georgia, is a blank check for Russian occupation.

So much for Old Europe. New Europe, with fresher memories of Russian oppression, was not so supine. The presidents of the Baltic republics (plus Ukraine and Poland) flew to Tbilisi to express solidarity with the Saakashvili government. Ukraine threatened the Russian fleet with loss of its Crimean base, and even offered to turn two ex-Soviet radar stations over to the West. And Poland dropped its dithering over details of a missile defense battery, agreeing almost overnight to American terms.

Eastern Europe understands the stakes in Georgia. It is the ultimate target. Russia's aims are clear: (1) sever South Ossetia and Abkhazia from Georgia for incorporation into Russia; (2) bring down Georgia's pro-Western government; and (3) intimidate Eastern European countries into re-entering the Russian sphere of influence.

Objective No. 1 is already achieved. Georgia will never recover its provinces. They will soon be absorbed into Russia.

Objective No. 3 has backfired, for now. The Eastern Europeans have rallied to Georgia - and to the United States.

Objective No. 2 remains in the balance. Russian tanks have cut Georgia in half. Its largest port has been ransacked. Its capital is isolated. Russia shows every sign of staying in place by maintaining checkpoints and ultimate control.

If conditions continue, Georgia will be strangled and Saakashvili will fall, to be replaced by a Russian client whom Russia will offer to deal with magnanimously. Russia will have demonstrated its capacity to destroy a neighboring pro-Western regime without full-scale invasion or occupation and with zero resistance from NATO. Eastern European leaders will observe this outcome with shock, rethink their reflexive move toward the West and, in time, begin to accommodate themselves to Russian ambitions. Every Russian objective will have been achieved.

That is why so much hinges on the next few weeks, a time of maximum pressure on the Saakashvili government. The goal of this war is to demoralize and dominate Eastern Europe. Its outcome depends entirely on one development: Whether Russia succeeds in bringing down what it contemptuously calls "the Tbilisi regime." The fate of far more than Georgia is at stake.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Lindsey Graham said Friday that his visit to Georgia, Ukraine and Poland, at Sen.
