Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami Hails Success of Tehran's Palestine Conference
The international conference dubbed 'Palestine: Manifestation of Resistance, Gaza: Victim of Crimes', held 4-5 March in Tehran, brought together legal experts, politicians and religious leaders to Tehran to focus on Gaza's reconstruction and Israeli war crimes.

[SNIP]

"A fresh list of the Zionist criminals who played a role in the genocide of the Palestinian people has been compiled which will be gradually presented to the Interpol for legal action after each case is completed," Iranian Prosecutor General Saeed Mortazavi told reporters on Thursday on the sidelines of the 4th international conference on support for Palestine.

Elsewhere, Ayatollah Khatami condemned the arrest warrant issued by the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

"The ICC arrest warrant issued against the Sudanese president testifies the instrumental use of international bodies (by the western powers)," Ayatollah Khatami said.

He said the warrant is among the bizarre events of the present age.

Ayatollah Khatami also called on Saudi Arabia to mobilize the world of Islam against Israel instead of focusing on issues which would undermine Muslim solidarity.

October 2008:Russia’s Arctic plan
New offshore hydrocarbon fields are to be opened, oil and gas production boosted, the shelf delineated, fish catch increased and shipping along the Northern Sea Route vitalized. That is some of the plans for the Arctic laid down in the Russian government’s national social and economic development programme for the period until year 2020.

The programme, which covers the whole range of Russian society and economy, was adopted by government on October 1. The document, which includes a major stress on the strengthening of an innovative Russian economy, also highlights Russia’s plans for the Arctic.

Turkmenistan Names New Mosque After Leader
Turkmenistan has named a newly built mosque after its president, bringing back memories of his predecessor who named cities, streets and the first month of the year after himself.

The Central Asian nation's state television reported on the opening of the new mosque -- named after President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov -- late on March 5 in a town in the south of the country.

"I congratulate you on the opening of the... mosque built by the president and named after Gurbanguly-hajji," Tukmenistan's Grand Mufti Roushen Alaberdyev was shown as saying.
The mosque is made of white marble and can hold up to 2,500 people, Turkmen media said.

Supreme Court dismisses case of suspected Al Qaeda agent
The Supreme Court on Friday bowed out of deciding whether the president has the power to imprison people in the U.S. indefinitely without a trial -- avoiding a showdown the Obama administration did not want.

The court granted the administration's request to dismiss the challenge to the president's authority from suspected Al Qaeda sleeper agent Ali Saleh Kahlah Marri, who was detained by the military for 5 1/2 years without charges.

But the court's order also vacates the federal appeals court ruling Marri was challenging, which had affirmed the president's power to detain people in the United States without trial.

Marri will be transferred to civilian custody as soon as next week to face charges of providing material support for terrorism. Obama administration lawyers had argued that the case before the high court was moot because Marri had been charged in the criminal system.

"We look forward to prosecuting this case in the criminal justice system and presenting the evidence for a jury to decide [Marri's] guilt or innocence," Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said.

Ten Banks Sign On As Initial Clearing Members Of ICE Trust
Ten major banks have signed on as initial clearing members of Intercontinental Exchange Inc.'s (ICE) new clearinghouse for credit default swaps.

The dealers onboard include Bank of America (BAC), Barclays Capital (BCS), Citigroup (C), Credit Suisse (CS), Deutsche Bank (DB), Goldman Sachs (GS), J.P. Morgan (JPM), Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley (MS) and UBS AG (UBS).

Each has contributed to the guaranty fund and completed "rigorous technical testing" in recent months, according to a news release from ICE.

So, WTF is a credit default swap anyway?
Definition of Credit Default Swap - CDS are a financial instrument for swapping the risk of debt default. Credit default swaps may be used for emerging market bonds, mortgage backed securities, corporate bonds and local government bonds. The buyer of a credit default swap pays a premium for effectively insuring against a debt default. He receives a lump sum payment if the debt instrument is defaulted. The seller of a credit default swap receives monthly payments from the buyer. If the debt instrument defaults they have to pay the agreed amount to the buyer of the credit default swap.

Radical socialist speaks her mind
Amelia Titus

The lecture promoted her upcoming work, “Sexuality and Socialism: The History, Politics, and Theory of LGBT Liberation” and was arranged by the International Socialist Organization. Wolf noted the mere title of her book often incites conversations in a nation still debating over everything from same-sex marriage to economic rights — two issues she stressed are more pressing than ever.

“Even the first questions you are asked on application forms, namely ‘Are you male or female? Have you ever been married?,’ are ones which define you and your economic possibilities,” she emphasized. Wolf related this argument specifically to the struggle of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender minorities to overturn Proposition 8, a measure enacted in California that confines marriage laws strictly to heterosexual couples.

Since its implementation in November of last year, Proposition 8 has garnered both widespread support for upholding traditional marriage definitions and intense criticism from demonstrators who considered it a form of legislative discrimination.

In one of Wolf’s most recent articles, “The Unapologetic Case for Gay Marriage,” she wrote in characteristic irony, “In short, same-sex partners would be denied the same rights our government bestows on married heterosexual couples who tie the knot in a drunken night out in Vegas.”

Wolf dotted her lecture with allusions to pop culture, discussing the impact of television shows like “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and recent films like the critically acclaimed movie “Milk.”

Where many would shy away from subjects not fit for dinner conversation, Wolf sees discussion of these issues as inimical to progressing rights for all individuals. In trademark wit, she declared, “We need a society in which decisions who to have sex with, whether to have sex at all, with how many people or with which singular person, are not roadblocks to getting the health care and economic support all deserve.”

Maybe her politics aren’t so radical.

Titus is a member of the class of 2011.

Clinton: There will be a Palestinian state, Jerusalem will be its capital
Just hours after blaming Hamas and other terror groups for the lack of peace in the region, visiting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signaled that while it may recognize the source of the obstruction, that won't stop the Obama Administration from pushing for the rapid creation of a Palestinian Arab state.

Clinton told reporters in Jerusalem that she and President Barack Obama plan to be "vigorously engaged" in bringing about the birth of "Palestine," adding that "there is no time to waste."

That is likely to put Clinton and Obama at odds with incoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has refused to commit to the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state, and instead wants to focus on bettering the economic conditions under which the Palestinian Arabs live.

Netanyahu met with Clinton on Tuesday, and indicated in remarks to the press that the two had found some common ground. However, few expect relations between the Obama and Netanyahu governments to be smooth.

On Wednesday Clinton all but guaranteed that her government will clash with Netanyahu's when she suggested in a joint press conference with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas that for Washington, the division of Jerusalem is a foregone conclusion.

Speaking to reporters in Ramallah, Clinton said she was not pleased with the Jerusalem municipality's plans to demolish 80 Arab homes on the city's eastern side that were built without proper permits.

"Clearly this kind of activity is unhelpful and not in keeping with the obligations entered into under the 'road map'," said Clinton. "It is an issue that we intend to raise with the government of Israel and the government at the municipal level in Jerusalem."

Israel, of course, officially rejected those parts of the "road map" peace plan that attempted to equate Israel's sovereignty over the eastern half of Jerusalem to its settlement-building activity in the rest of Judea and Samaria.

Clinton's remarks suggested that the Obama administration does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the eastern half of Jerusalem any more than it does in the so-called "West Bank."

Observers argued that she also legitimized lawlessness on the part of eastern Jerusalem's Arab populations by suggesting that they are not subject to the authority of the Jerusalem municipality.

In related news, Jerusalem police officials confirmed to WorldNetDaily and Israel National News this week that Palestinian Authority police forces are being permitted to operate on the outskirts of the Israeli capital.

Israeli police have given Palestinian police the green light to take over public security in Arab villages and neighborhoods on the eastern edges of Jerusalem, and Israeli Jews have been warned to now steer clear of those areas.

A growing number of Israeli politicians, including Avigdor Lieberman of the supposedly ultra-right-wing Israel Beiteinu Party, have of late embraced the idea of surrendering the Arab areas of eastern Jerusalem to the Palestinian Authority.

Russian Diplomatic Academy Prognosticates Martial Law & Doom for USA:

The dean at Russia's Foreign Ministry school in Moscow says President Barack Obama will order martial law this year, the U.S. will split into six states before 2011, and Russia and China will become the backbones of a new world order, the Associated Press reports.

"There is a high probability that the collapse of the United States will occur by 2010," Igor Panarin told dozens of students, professors and diplomats Tuesday at the Diplomatic Academy.

Panarin said the recent economic turmoil in the U.S. and other "social and cultural phenomena" led him to move up his timetable for "The End" — when the United States will break up and Alaska will revert to Russian control. He linked America's social and cultural issues to the large prison populations and large numbers of gay men.

Masked agents raid Ukraine state gas firm
Ukrainian security service agents in masks and armed with machine guns Wednesday burst into the headquarters of the state gas firm, in a dramatic flaring of tension within the country's feuding leadership.

The chaotic scenes at the Naftogaz building in central Kiev were an explosive twist in the long running dispute between President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko over Russian gas exports to Ukraine.

The SBU security service -- the successor to the Soviet KGB which is overseen by Yushchenko -- said the raid was aimed at seizing documents for a criminal investigation into the seizure of billions of cubic metres of gas.

"They pushed their way through the guards to enter," Naftogaz spokesman Valentin Zemlyansky told AFP, adding they searched and blocked off offices including that of Naftogaz deputy chief Igor Didenko.

The last agents finally left at around 1600 GMT, he said, after a raid lasting almost five hours.

The SBU was searching for contracts with Gazprom, the Russian energy giant whose stand-off with Naftogaz sparked the crisis that seriously disrupted gas supplies to Europe in January, Zemlyansky said.

Meantime, back at the NIC:

An independent inspector general will look into the foreign financial ties of Chas W. Freeman Jr., the Obama administration's pick to serve as chairman of the group that prepares the U.S. intelligence community's most sensitive assessments, according to three congressional aides.

The director of national intelligence, Dennis C. Blair, last Thursday named Mr. Freeman, a veteran former diplomat, to the chairmanship of the National Intelligence Council, known inside the government as the NIC. In that job, Mr. Freeman will have access to some of America's most closely guarded secrets and be charged with overseeing the drafting of the consensus view of all 16 intelligence agencies.

Among the areas likely to be scrutinized in the vetting process are Mr. Freeman's position on the international advisory board of the China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC). The Chinese government and other state-owned companies own a majority stake in the concern, which has invested in Sudan and other countries sometimes at odds with the United States, including Iran.

Mr. Freeman is also president of the nonprofit educational organization Middle East Policy Council (MEPC), which paid him $87,000 in 2006, and received at least $1 million from a Saudi prince. He also has chaired Projects International, a consulting firm that has worked with foreign companies and governments.

א יֹשֵׁב, בְּסֵתֶר עֶלְיוֹן; בְּצֵל שַׁדַּי, יִתְלוֹנָן. 1 O thou that dwellest in the covert of the Most High, and abidest in the shadow of the Almighty;
2 I will say of the LORD, who is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust,
3 That He will deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4 He will cover thee with His pinions, and under His wings shalt thou take refuge; His truth is a shield and a buckler.
ה לֹא-תִירָא, מִפַּחַד לָיְלָה; מֵחֵץ, יָעוּף יוֹמָם. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flieth by day;
6 Of the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor of the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold, and see the recompense of the wicked.
9 For thou hast made the LORD who is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation.
10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent.
11 For He will give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
12 They shall bear thee upon their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and asp; the young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under feet.
14 'Because he hath set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he hath known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him, and bring him to honour.

THE COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS presents for your Plebian edification:

The Meaning of Nationalization

For decades now, "nationalization" has been a dirty word in U.S. business circles. The term conjures associations abhorrent to most economists--from dysfunctional resource-rich nations seizing the assets of foreign companies to bloated European government structures suffocating on bureaucracy. A government taking control of private companies, many economists said, was antithetical to free-market policy and dangerously close to socialism. But with the largest U.S. banks facing existential challenges, economic urgency has upended the debate over nationalization.

More Than 8.3 Million US Mortgages Are Under Water

Details of "Hosing Rescue Plan" are revealed:

•Loan Refinancing.

Up to 5 million homeowners with a solid payment history on mortgages held or owned by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae will be eligible to refinance into more affordable terms. Normally, these borrowers would have been unable to refinance because heir homes have lost value, pushing their current loan-to-value ratios above 80%. The program will end in 2010.

•Loan Modifications.

Lenders and other servicers can immediately begin making modifications that could help up to 4 million at-risk homeowners stay in their properties.To be eligible, homeowners must have loans that originated on or before Jan. 1, 2009. Eligible are first-lien loans on owner-occupied properties with unpaid principal balances up to $729,750. Higher limits will be allowed for owner-occupied properties with two to four units.All borrowers must document income, which includes providing information such as two most recent pay stubs and an affidavit of financial hardship. The program will run until Dec. 31, 2012. Incentives also are provided to get lenders to modify mortgages if a borrower isn't late on payments but is at risk of default.

•Lenders and other servicers.

Lenders will be required to use a formula — basically, a net value test — on each loan that is 60 days past due or delinquent. The test basically requires servicers to do the modification if the net present value of cash flows with a modification is greater than without a reworking.Servicers also must follow an established process to reduce the monthly payment to no more than 31% of the borrowers' gross monthly income. In order to do that, lenders will first reduce the interest rate on the loan and then extend the term of the loan to up to 40 years.Servicers will get financial incentives, such as an up-front fee of $1,000 per modification, to encourage participation.

So justice is far from us,
and righteousness does not reach us.
We look for light, but all is darkness;
for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.

Like the blind we grope along the wall,
feeling our way like men without eyes.
At midday we stumble as if it were twilight;
among the strong, we are like the dead.
We all growl like bears;
we moan mournfully like doves.
We look for justice, but find none;
for deliverance, but it is far away.
For our offenses are many in your sight,
and our sins testify against us.
Our offenses are ever with us,
and we acknowledge our iniquities:
rebellion and treachery against the LORD,
turning our backs on our God,
fomenting oppression and revolt,
uttering lies our hearts have conceived.

So justice is driven back,
and righteousness stands at a distance;
truth has stumbled in the streets,
honesty cannot enter.

Truth is nowhere to be found,
and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.
The LORD looked and was displeased
that there was no justice.
He saw that there was no one,
he was appalled that there was no one to intervene;
so his own arm worked salvation for him,
and his own righteousness sustained him.

He put on righteousness as his breastplate,
and the helmet of salvation on his head;
he put on the garments of vengeance
and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak.
According to what they have done,
so will he repay
wrath to his enemies
and retribution to his foes;
he will repay the islands their due.

From the west, men will fear the name of the LORD,
and from the rising of the sun, they will revere his glory.
For he will come like a pent-up flood
that the breath of the LORD drives along.
"The Redeemer will come to Zion,
to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,"
declares the LORD.

"As for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD. "My Spirit, who is on you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth, or from the mouths of your children, or from the mouths of their descendants from this time on and forever," says the LORD.

Procol Harum
Pilgrim's Progress

At first I took my weight to be an anchor
and gathered up my fears to guide me round
but then I clearly saw my own delusion
and found my struggles further bogged me down

In starting out I thought to go exploring
and set my foot upon the nearest road
In vain I looked to find the promised turning
but only saw how far I was from home

In searching I forsook the paths of learning
and sought instead to find some pirate's gold
In fighting I did hurt those dearest to me
and still no hidden truths could I unfold

I sat me down to write a simple story
which maybe in the end became a song
The words have all been writ by one before me
We're taking turns in trying to pass them on
Oh, we're taking turns in trying to pass them on
