Just two weeks ago, Emerging Infectious Diseases published a study that found that some beef, chicken, and turkey sold in Michigan grocery stores contained methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The study found that 20.5 percent of the beef tested showed positive for S. aureus, 25 percent in chicken, and 24.6 percent in turkey. Six samples -- two in beef, three in chicken and one in turkey -- showed positive for MRSA.6
And although, as the researchers stated, cooking kills MRSA, handling the infected meat before cooking transfers the bacteria to your hands -- thus infecting you if you have any open wounds on your hands. Of course, then your hands become a source for infecting any other food you touch -- as does your cutting board, counter tops, plates, and sink. MRSA is now everywhere in your kitchen, even after you cook the meat.
But even worse was a study sponsored by the FDA and published in the journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases, which tested beef, chicken, pork, and turkey purchased from grocery stores in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Flagstaff, Ariz. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. This study, which is believed to be representative of the condition of meat across the United States, found that over halfof all the samples tested contained S. aureus. THERE has been a flurry of recent attention over two novel infectious agents: the first, a strain of avian influenza virus (H7N9) in China that is causing severe respiratory disease and other serious health complications in people; the second, a coronavirus, first reported last year in the Middle East, that has brought a crop of new infections. While the number of human cases from these two pathogens has so far been limited, the death rates for each are notably high.
Alarmingly, we face a third, and far more widespread, ailment that has gotten little attention: call it “contagion exhaustion.” News reports on a seemingly unending string of frightening microbes — bird flu, flesh-eating strep, SARS, AIDS, Ebola, drug-resistant bugs in hospitals, the list goes on — have led some people to ho-hum the latest reports.
Chinese Scientists Create New Mutant Bird-Flu Virus
Now a team of Chinese scientists has investigated that in their lab by creating a new hybrid virus. They combined H5N1 avian influenza, which is highly lethal but doesn’t transmit easily between people, with the highly contagious H1N1 swine flu strain responsible for infecting tens of millions of people in 2009.
The new hybrid virus passed easily between guinea pigs, which are used to study how flu infects mammals. Molecular changes in the virus may provide clues of what to look for in circulating H5N1 strains, perhaps allowing scientists to anticipate when viruses will more easily infect humans.
“The sole major difference is the use of guinea pigs in this paper and ferrets in that paper,” said Ebright. “In my assessment, neither paper contains substantive new information that justifies the risks posed by the research.”

As admitted by the IRS, and as detailed in a forthcoming Inspector General report, the agency targeted conservative organizations seeking tax-exempt status for issue advocacy, a standard practice for political groups that aren’t mainly about elections.
The IRS sent long questionnaires to the organizations, and documents obtained by ABC News show that the questions were extensive. The Richmond Tea Party, for instance, was asked 17 detailed questions in 2010, and 12 more, with lots of bulleted sub-questions, in 2012. Other groups were asked about 30 questions in one letter, and most of the letters were similar, with some specific, quirky questions added or subtracted.

While the number of human cases from these two pathogens has so far been limited, the death rates for each are notably high.
Alarmingly, we face a third, and far more widespread, ailment that has gotten little attention: call it “contagion exhaustion.” News reports on a seemingly unending string of frightening microbes — bird flu, flesh-eating strep, SARS, AIDS, Ebola, drug-resistant bugs in hospitals, the list goes on — have led some people to ho-hum the latest reports.
Chinese Scientists Create New Mutant Bird-Flu Virus

They combined H5N1 avian influenza, which is highly lethal but doesn’t transmit easily between people, with the highly contagious H1N1 swine flu strain responsible for infecting tens of millions of people in 2009.
The new hybrid virus passed easily between guinea pigs, which are used to study how flu infects mammals. Molecular changes in the virus may provide clues of what to look for in circulating H5N1 strains, perhaps allowing scientists to anticipate when viruses will more easily infect humans.
“The sole major difference is the use of guinea pigs in this paper and ferrets in that paper,” said Ebright. “In my assessment, neither paper contains substantive new information that justifies the risks posed by the research.”

The World Health Organization says it appears likely that the novel coronavirus (NCoV) can be passed between people in close contact.
This comes after the French health ministry confirmed a second man had contracted the virus in a possible case of human-to-human transmission.
Two more people in Saudi Arabia are also reported to have died from the virus, according to health officials.
NCoV is known to cause pneumonia and sometimes kidney failure.

ReplyDeleteAccording to Judge Jeanine Pirro, whose fiery speech is one of the best to be found on the subject of Benghazi, our president and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton knew a "stand down" order had effectively sealed the fate of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. They died because men who could have saved them were not sent to help. Pirro states both Obama and Clinton lied, leaving all four men to die. Obama went to bed and rested up for his trip to Las Vegas, knowing all the while there was no enraging You-tube video. They both knew the truth, but chose to lie. But, Pirro said, after all, there was an election looming ahead.
We now know Obama knew.

Bobby Darin was born 77 years ago today.
ReplyDeleteA singer, songwriter and actor of film and television, Darin performed in a range of music genres, including pop, rock, jazz, folk and country.
He started as a songwriter for Connie Francis, and recorded his own first million-seller "Splish Splash" in 1958. This was followed by "Dream Lover," "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea," which brought him world fame.

In 1962, he won a Golden Globe for his first film Come September, co-starring his first wife, Sandra Dee (married 1960–1967).
Throughout the 1960s, he became more politically active and worked on Robert Kennedy's Democratic presidential campaign. He was present on June 6, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on the evening of Kennedy's assassination.
The same year, he discovered that he had been brought up by his grandparents, not his parents, and that the girl he thought was his sister was actually his mother.
These events deeply affected Darin and sent him into a long period of seclusion.
Although he made a successful television comeback, his health was beginning to fail, as he had always expected, following bouts of rheumatic fever in childhood. This knowledge of his vulnerability had always spurred him on to exploit his musical talent while still young.
He died at 37 in 1973, following a heart operation in Los Angeles.
