Al-Monitor gained access to this high-security,
one-story facility with the permission of the Hamas-run Ministry of
Interior, on condition that the correspondent be accompanied by a guard,
names of prisoners are not published and that the final report was
reviewed by the ministry before publishing.

My cat died on May 9, 2007. I must confess a small part of me thought he'd live forever. He was always a mystery, arriving on our doorstep one day in 1992 and deciding this was his home -- we didn't have a say in the matter. In his own quietly persistent way he became part of the family and 'the drifter' that blew in on our doorstep became a much loved family pet. Although he never did quite play by the rules. We could never decide on a name for him -- which seemed to suit our transient friend just fine. He was forever more just called "Pussy" and he didn't mind one bit. He had no time for a collar, vet appointments nor even comfortable indoor living -- he was his own cat and loved the outdoor life. For 15 years he endured the coldest winters, rain, hail n' shine and spent every moment in the great outdoors. Attempts to domesticate him were hopeless -- even on the most coldest evenings I'd place him on my bed and invite him to stay the night. He'd curl up, purr and enjoy my company yet as soon as I turned out the lights to sleep he'd be at my door insisting to be let outside with a pitiful meow. Of course I'd let him out and he'd disappear into the night to do what cats have to do -- it wasn't my business. His days were spent in our garden -- sleeping and exploring all its corners, hidden spots and loveliness. He truly loved that garden and found comfort in its safety. He honestly could see the beauty in flowers and the natural aesthetic of nature. The garden was his and he spent nights fighting neighbourhood cats who dared enter his domain. He endured a bite out of one of his ears after a particularly fierce battle -- but even that didn't faze him. He was tough but loyal to those he loved and for some reason he loved me the most. I don't know what he saw in me but I felt the same way about him. I like to think in our hearts we were both 'drifters' who found an anchor in each other. When he passed I dug a hole in one of his favourite places he used to sleep in the garden. My Mother collected flowers and we placed them in the ground with him and laid him to rest. The next day the tree overhanging his tiny grave dropped all its flowers and orange petals lay scattered where he rest peacefully. It was beautiful and fitting for our garden loving cat. This video is a tribute to my friend "Pussy" -- the original Mother Nature's Son.

So, it comes down to, as many things, a matter of the conscious mind to discern that which is truly good from beyond well formed phenomena in Islamic culture like denying, whitewashing, interpreting destruction and evil as its opposite and standing up to what is obvious and right in front of them. From infancy, universal moral codes are encoded upside down and by childhood, the Muslim mind will argue the virtues of evil, believing they are good. And it begins with the example of the figure they hold to be their revealed prophet: Raping a 9 year-old child becomes not just marriage but perhaps Islam’s most celebrated marriage; killing becomes struggle in the way of Allah prescribed to purify the earth of corruption in preparation for God’s final judgment; stolen goods, property, and money becomes booty and the rightful property of the Muslims; captured women and children become slaves and may be taken as wives; polygamy becomes “protection” from adultery; humiliating and subjugating women becomes respect and protection. This is the world I grew up in… and, for my life, left. http://nocompulsion.com/the-islam-i-knew/

A compilation of double exposures, an accidental phenomenon no longer possible with digital cameras. As well as the unintentional displayed here (though the first picture is debatable, and the saxophonist too), it was a common practise to use double exposures to create what became known as “Spirit Photographs”. One of the most prolific of the spirit photographers was a man named William Hope, whose startling images you can see in our post “The Spirit Photographs of William Hope”.

Former dictator Jorge Rafael Videla, who took power over Argentina in a 1976 coup and led a military junta that killed thousands of his fellow citizens in a dirty war to eliminate so-called "subversives," died quietly in his sleep Friday while serving life in prison for crimes against humanity. He was 87.

Federal Prison Service Director Victor Hortel said Videla died in his prison cell. He was found lifeless in his bed and declared dead at 8:25 a.m., according to an official medical report cited by the state news agency Telam.

Videla ran one of the bloodiest military governments during South America's era of dictatorships, and later sought to take full responsibility for kidnappings, tortures, deaths and disappearances when he was tried again and again for these crimes in recent years. He said he knew about everything that happened under his rule because "I was above everyone."

The black flag of jihad flies over much of northern Syria. In the center of the country, pro-government militias and Hezbollah fighters battle those who threaten their communities. In the northeast, the Kurds have effectively carved out an autonomous zone.

After more than two years of conflict, Syria is breaking up. A constellation of armed groups battling to advance their own agendas are effectively creating the outlines of separate armed fiefs. As the war expands in scope and brutality, its biggest casualty appears to be the integrity of the Syrian state.

As far back as 1988, an FBI informant working inside the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States issued a warning about a front called the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). According to the anonymous FBI source, the IIIT was then in the first of six phases to “institute Islamic Revolution in the United States.” The objective was to peacefully infiltrate the United States government and American universities.

That report was issued a full seven years after the Institute was founded in 1981 by Dr. Jamal Bazinji, Dr. Hisham Yahya Altalib, Dr. ‘Abdul Hamid Ahmad Abu Sulayman among others with seed money from the Muslim Brotherhood. Today, the IIIT has branches and offices in at least 15 countries worldwide and no less than 15 major colleges and universities in the United States.

Your photos and your captions seem to epitomize the overlap between drug abuse, homelessness, sex work, and poverty. Have you gained an understanding of the way these things are connected?

My views on these issues are in flux because of my experiences here. Sonia, who looks and acts like a librarian, says, "If I had all the money in the world I'd have all the crack in the world." She's saying, Look, I've been in and out of rehab, I was clean for eight years, I'm not lacking in resources in terms of help. I've got methadone, I've got people willing to help me but unless it comes from me it can't happen.

When you don't talk to someone, it's very easy to judge them. You can build up a narrative where they kind of deserve what they got. When you talk to someone, it's much harder. Jamie, one guy I've gotten to like a lot, lived underneath the Bruckner Expressway. Whenever I'd go back to see him, I'd bring him whatever he needed because the winters are tough. We'd smoke a cigarette and just talk. He had a cat, Mimi. Mimi was a female and looked like she was going into heat and I asked him if I could get Mimi spayed. Then I asked some people for help trying to get Mimi spayed. I kind of got more offers to help Mimi than I did to help Jamie. I appreciate all those offers, in both cases, and people have been very helpful for Jamie, but there's the mentality that an animal doesn't deserve what it's gotten but a person does, because maybe they've done something to deserve that.

Well what's the market price for a video of the mayor of Toronto smoking crack?

A cellphone video that appears to show Mayor Rob Fordsmoking crack cocaine is being shopped around Toronto by a group of Somali men involved in the drug trade.

Two Toronto Star reporters have viewed the video three times. It appears to show Ford in a room, sitting in a chair, wearing a white shirt, top buttons open, inhaling from what appears to be a glass crack pipe. Ford is incoherent, trading jibes with an off-camera speaker who goads the clearly impaired mayor by raising topics including Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and the Don Bosco high school football team Ford coaches.

“I’m f---ing right-wing,” Ford appears to mutter at one point. “Everyone expects me to be right-wing. I’m just supposed to be this great.…” and his voice trails off. At another point he is heard calling Trudeau a “fag.” Later in the 90-second video he is asked about the football team and he appears to say (though he is mumbling), “they are just f---ing minorities.”

well since it seems no one else will consider it, I suppose that I'll figure out a way to get the dish washer loaded while everyone else is sleeping. The weather is supposed to suck this weekend. If I get a couple new plumbing fixtures replaced, I can lay down down ply board, put up some green board and drywall and prepare for the next phase of our master bathroom rebuild. It's been since October, the 15th in fact. That's unacceptable.

I'll quietly get the dish washer loaded and running and start picking up some things around this joint. I can't stand the mess and everyone else's apathy to what is arguably one of our largest investments. No way in hell we could sell this house the shape it's in presently. The choices are simple. Participate in getting this joint

    1. Cleaned up
    2. Fix things that need to be fixed
    3. Take care of your own mess and don't expect someone else to clean it up for you.
    4. Don't put shit off when you can do it now.
    5. I expect results. This is not up for discussion. Get with the team all working for a common goal, or get out. This is a yes/no question if anyone has any questions. I would strongly recommend yes as the answer and noticeable results.

I read something like this in BOOK once or twice...............

The Syrian war is set for its next stage, the spillover of hostilities from Syrian Golan into Israel. debkafile: This is the consequence of the failure of the US, Israel and Turkey to dismantle the Tehran-Damascus-Hizballah bloc, or even stem the flow of Russian, Iranian, Iraqi and Hizballah fighters and arms, which have helped Bashar Assad chalk up major successes for beating the uprising against his rule. A war of attrition against Israel carries the potential of spreading to Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan.

A raging mob in Tbilisi chased away a downtown rally designed to commemorate the May 17 International Day against Homophobia. “Kill them! Tear them to pieces!” yelled the agitated crowd as police struggled to evacuate a handful of gay-rights supporters from the Georgian capital's central Freedom Square.

It was a scene of medieval mob violence, as thousands of Georgians -- mostly young men, but also robed priests and women in headscarves -- stormed through a police cordon and went pursuing the activists. “Where are they? Don’t let them leave alive!” screamed frenzied men, as they took over the square, outnumbering and overpowering police troops.

Police barely managed to herd some of the LGBT activists into municipal buses, before angry protesters surrounded the vehicles. The crowd hit, threw stones and followed the buses as they pushed their way out of the square.

The pursuit continued on the side streets. Just outside the square, a mob tried to storm a house, where several gay rights activists had sought refuge. “Drag them out, stomp them to death,” screamed one woman as she tried to push her way through a group of policemen, who wrestled with the mob at the entrance of the house.

Very few civilians dared to speak against the violence. “Look at yourselves! You call yourselves Christians?” objected one elderly woman in tears, speaking from a balcony. “Go ahead, kill everyone you are told to hate in the name of God and national values.”

The following is an excerpt from Issa’s letter to Pickering:

Your refusal to allow staff investigators to interview you is inconsistent with your commitment to be “tough and transparent.” I hope you will reconsider your position in order to assist the Committee in gaining a full and complete understanding of the ARB’s work, and to help us address concerns career State Department officials and others have raised. In light of your continuing refusal to appear voluntarily for a transcribed interview, however, I have found it necessary to issue a subpoena to compel your appearance at a deposition. This subpoena creates a legal requirement that you appear in room 2157 of the Rayburn House Office Building at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013, and that you answer questions fully and truthfully. It remains my preference for you to appear voluntarily for a transcribed interview, and if that should also become your preference, please notify my staff and I will consider lifting the subpoena.

Nanny Bloomberg....the cops should strike and demand new gun laws...................

DENVER – Colorado sheriffs upset with gun restrictions adopted in the aftermath of last year's mass shootings filed a federal lawsuit Friday, challenging the regulations as unconstitutional.

The lawsuit involves sheriffs from 54 of Colorado's 64 counties, most representing rural, gun-friendly areas of the state.

The sheriffs say the new state laws violate Second Amendment protections that guarantee the right to keep and bear arms. Opponents are criticizing the lawsuit as political maneuvering.

Today the public complains that psychiatrists seem ready to call every state of mental distress an illness. They see that any restless boy can receive a diagnosis of attention deficit disorder, that troubled veterans—whether exposed to combat or not—are routinely said to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, and that enormous numbers of discouraged, demoralized people are labeled victims of depression and have medications pressed upon them.

The public is not far wrong. A recent nationwide diagnostic census based on DSM claimed that the majority of Americans have or have had a mental disorder. As a result, an appalling number of young adults in schools and colleges are on one form or another of psychiatric medication
