Floatin' Powa News Service: Maintaining The Proper Gander

Obama wants "immediate" Mideast talks: Mitchell
Obamanable Seizer the Bushman demands to be rendered unto, pronto.
Let's see if the Maccabees or the Pharisees respond
"The president has told me to exert all efforts to create the circumstance when the parties can begin immediate discussions," Mitchell told reporters at the start of a Palestinian donors' conference in the Norwegian capital.

Mitchell said the purpose of the donors' meeting was to "provide support for the Palestinian authority" and pave the way for a two-state solution with Israel.

In comments at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Mr. Netanyahu said, “We want to achieve peace with the Palestinians and with the countries of the Arab world, while attempting to reach maximum understanding with the United States and our friends around the world.”

Swooning French Whores
People gawked and cameras clicked as the Obamas cut a wide figure through the French capital even while confined to a presidential motorcade. It was more personal for the few kept not so distant — the restaurant owner who "saw God," the chauffeur reveling in a "magnificent mission."

President Barack Obama, wife Michelle and their two daughters touched lives in simple ways during a private stay in the French capital that closed out a six-day presidential tour rich in history, symbolism and giant messages to the world.

Center-Right and Fringe Parties Gain in Europe

Melanie Phillips on the BNP winning two seats in Parliament
All the public demonstrations of conspicuous nose-holding by MPs and the media, along with the repeated invocation of anti-voodoo phrases such as ‘fascist’ and ‘far right’, serve to obscure one or two salient matters. These terms are misleading. The philosophical antecedents of the BNP lie not on the right but on the left.

Labour MPs are shocked that it is their own voters who have turned to the BNP. They are shocked because it is a mantra of the left that it stands in heroic and historic opposition to fascism. This is untrue. Both fascism and communism have their roots in counter-Enlightenment, obscurantist thinking which replaced reason by emotion, Judeo-Christian ethics by paganism, and the rejection of the primacy of the individual in favour of collectively imposed authority.

Read Ze’ev Sternhell’s classic work, Neither Right Nor Left: Fascist Ideology in France to get the picture. Not for nothing were the Nazis called ’national socialists’. In similar fashion, the BNP fuse ultra-nationalism and racism with economic ideas which would sit well on the left of the Labour party. It is more helpful, and more accurate, to regard the BNP as opportunists. In the tradition of all fascist and neo-fascist parties, they prey upon a decaying body politic by taking up genuine grievances which are of overwhelming concern to the public but which, for one reason or another, mainstream politics is ignoring. By doing so, they serve to camouflage their own anti-democratic and noxious ideology.

Virtually everywhere you go ... They're watching
The use of surveillance cameras across the country has exploded in the past few years as they've gotten smaller, cheaper and easier to use. They're also more common because more people say they're willing to trade some anonymity for a stronger feeling of protection.

"You feel like Big Brother's watching," said Kim Gold, 48, of Wilmington. "I just hope he is. Wilmington is just not as safe as it used to be, so anything they can do to deter crime is great."

Privacy advocates and civil libertarians have always been uneasy about that trade-off.
DHS taps hacker Jeff Moss for cybersecurity advisory role
Jeff Moss, founder of the Black Hat and DefCon computer hacker conferences, was among those named to the Department of Homeland Security Advisory Council Friday by secretary Janet Napolitano. Moss, who has also worked in IT security for Ernst & Young, has gone by the hacker handle Dark Tangent.

Moss, 39, will serve on the advisory council with distinguished security and law enforcement professionals including former senator Gary Hart, former FBI director Louis Freeh, New York police commissioner Raymond Kelly and 9/11 commission member Lee Hamilton.

The announcement came Friday as Napolitano spoke to a gathering of police and elected officials about the government's counternarcotics plan for Southwest border states, which was streamed live to local intelligence sharing "fusion centers" throughout the Southwest.

"As we work to fulfill the department's core mission of securing the country against the many threats it faces, the unique insights and expertise of this diverse council will be a valuable resource," Napolitano said.
Air Force Names Cyberwarfare Commander
The Air Force announced Thursday that Maj. Gen. Richard E. Webber would become the first commander of the Air Force's first numbered cyberwarfare component. The 24th Air Force, which will likely be based at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, will focus exclusively on cyberwarfare as part of the larger Air Force Space Command. It will be a stripped-down version of the planned major command for cyberspace operations that had been headed up by Maj. Gen. William Lord, who was announced as the new Air Force CIO last month.

Congress, the Banks and Derivatives
The Obama administration has made a serious proposal to regulate derivatives — the multitrillion-dollar market in financial contracts that malfunctioned so disastrously last year. The plan goes further than many thought politically possible, especially in its call for federal oversight of all large derivatives dealers.
Senate vote 18 years ago opened the door for Fed's vast new powers:
On the day before Thanksgiving in 1991, the U.S. Senate voted to vastly expand the emergency powers of the Federal Reserve.

Almost no one noticed.

The crucial language was contained in a single, somewhat inscrutable sentence, and the only public explanation was offered during a final debate that began with a reminder that senators had airplanes to catch.Yet, in removing a long-standing prohibition on loans that supported financial speculation, the provision effectively allowed the Fed for the first time to lend money to Wall Street during a crisis.

That authority, which sat unused for more than 16 years, now provides the legal basis for the Fed's unprecedented efforts to rescue the financial system.

Since March 2008, the central bank's board of governors has invoked its emergency powers at least 19 times: to contain the wreckage of Bear Stearns and ease the fall of American International Group, to preserve Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, to limit losses at Bank of America and Citigroup, to lend more than $1 trillion. The repeated use of the once-obscure law has surprised and alarmed a wide variety of people, including economists and members of Congress. It has even raised worries among presidents of the regional banks that make up the Federal Reserve system.

Paul Jay speaks to Leo Panitch, Professor of Political Science at York University about the relevance of Karl Marx’s theories today. They discuss climate change and the economy as seen from a Marxist perspective. Panitch says that many non-Marxists are advocating Marxist-like ideas, such as putting "banks into the hands of the State" because "in the face of this [economic] crisis, it's rational."

Google Advisor Found Dead
Tech visionary and "angel investor" Rajeev Motwani, 47, was found dead in the backyard swimming pool of his Palo Alto, Calif., home on Friday. According to the Associated Press, his friends reported Motwani could not swim. There was no official word about the cause of his death; an autopsy report is pending.

Motwani was a professor at Stanford and was dedicated to helping entrepreneurs: Motwani founded the Mining Data at Stanford project (MIDAS), which provided support for developing innovative data management concepts. He was an early supporter of companies such as Google Inc.; he was unofficial advisor to Sergey Brin and Larry Page while they were studying at Stanford.

A Vatican-backed conference on evolution is under attack from people who weren't invited to participate: those espousing creationism and intelligent design:

Sleeping giant lurks off the coast
Referring to the Cascadia Subduction Zone:

...if the next big earthquake is anything like the last, we could expect 600 miles of rupture with up to 50 feet of slip. The coastline from Cape Mendocino to Vancouver Island would take the brunt of the tsunami, however, with wave heights of 20 feet or more expected.

Waves would arrive within 30 minutes so warning time would be short. Some coastal communities are now aware of tsunami dangers and warning signs have been posted. The coastline may likely be down dropped due to drag along the offshore fault, which would expand inundation zones and flood coastal properties.

The Welsh Geological Survey confirmed it had a magnitude of two-point-eight, which is almost equivalent to a bailiff banging on your front door or the coalman delivering a sack of nutty slack.
