Privacy in an age of publicity

n extraordinary fuss about eavesdropping started in the spring of 1844, when Giuseppe Mazzini, an Italian exile in London, became convinced that the British government was opening his mail. Mazzini, a revolutionary who’d been thrown in jail in Genoa, imprisoned in Savona, sentenced to death in absentia, and arrested in Paris, was plotting the unification of the kingdoms of Italy and the founding of an Italian republic. He suspected that, in London, he’d been the victim of what he called “post-office espionage”: he believed that the Home Secretary, Sir James Graham, had ordered his mail to be opened, at the request of the Austrian Ambassador, who, like many people, feared what Mazzini hoped—that an insurrection in Italy would spark a series of revolutions across Europe. Mazzini knew how to find out: he put poppy seeds, strands of hair, and grains of sand into envelopes, sealed the envelopes with wax, and sent them, by post, to himself. When the letters arrived—still sealed—they contained no poppy seeds, no hair, and no grains of sand. Mazzini then had his friend Thomas Duncombe, a Member of Parliament, submit a petition to the House of Commons. Duncombe wanted to know if Graham really had ordered the opening of Mazzini’s mail. Was the British government in the business of prying into people’s private correspondence? Graham said the answer to that question was a secret.

As a matter of historical analysis, the relationship between secrecy and privacy can be stated in an axiom: the defense of privacy follows, and never precedes, the emergence of new technologies for the exposure of secrets. In other words, the case for privacy always comes too late. The horse is out of the barn. The post office has opened your mail. Your photograph is on Facebook. Google already knows that, notwithstanding your demographic, you hate kale.

The Obama administration deployed government-paid community organizers to Sanford, Florida after the shooting death of Trayvon Martin last year in order to foment racial tensions, newly released government documents show.

The news came as the Obama administration publicly pretended to be concerned at the prospect of ugly race riots breaking out across America in the increasingly likely event that defendant George Zimmerman will be acquitted in the case.

Something creepy happened when mystery became secular, secrecy became a
technology, and privacy became a right. The inviolability of the self
replaced the inscrutability of God. No wonder people got buggy about it

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) - Joe Conley, an actor best known as the small town storekeeper on the TV series "The Waltons," has died at age 85.

The Los Angeles Times reports Tuesday that according to wife Louise Conley, Joe Conley died at a care facility in Southern California on Sunday. She says he had suffered from dementia.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Conley had bit parts on 1960s series like "Green Acres" and "The Beverly Hillbillies" before he landed the role on CBS's "The Waltons" in 1972 that would last nearly a decade.

Conley played Ike Godsey, postmaster and owner of the Jefferson County general store frequented by the Walton family in Depression-era Virginia. He would appear in 172 episodes over nine seasons and in TV movie reunions that lasted into the 1990s.

If Muhammad were truly a prophet, why did he make no provision in the Koran for his successor? Failing to do so triggered the great Muslim divide, following Muhammad's death, of dueling Sunni and Shiite sects -- one witnessing 1,400 years now of Muslim-on-Muslim violence.

Muhammad left the door open for this violence by mandating any Muslim leaving the faith (apostate) should suffer death. As Sunnis and Shiites each perceive the other to be apostates, each therefore believes the Koran sanctions violence against the other.

For this reason, although Islam directs hatred and non-tolerance at non-believers, history records more Muslims dying at the hands of fellow Muslims than non-believers.

The trend continues today, evidenced by daily violence occurring in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Lebanon -- all coming to a head in Syria where Sunnis and Shiites struggle to establish regional dominance.

An Army veteran in Texas is fighting for his Second Amendment rights after learning that a misdemeanor pot conviction from 1971 has disqualified him from ever owning a gun.

Ron Kelly, who retired from the Army in 1993 after 20 years of service, was recently turned away when he tried to buy a .22-cal rifle at a Wal-Mart in Tomball, Texas, after a computerized background check flagged the 42-year-old arrest. The story was on the front page of the Houston Chronicle on Wednesday.

Kelly said he had forgotten about his minor pot violation from high school — the federal government, on the other hand, has not.

The Army vet spent one night in jail and was given one year of probation. Though he didn’t realize it at the time, he was also apparently stripped of his Second Amendment rights for a lifetime.

Can We Trust China to Make American Special Purpose Uniforms?

There’s an important under reported initiative called the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). The TPP is an international free trade agreement currently being negotiated between the US, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. When the agreement is finalized it lets members export their product with lower fees, and essentially reduces large barriers to entry within member countries.

In a rare on-the-record vote on a contentious trade-related issue, the Senate defeated a provision sponsored by Sen. John McCain that would have stripped the “Buy American” requirement from the Stimulus Bill. -From Manufacturing and Technology News

Government’s “Secret Interpretation” of Patriot Act: “EVERYTHING” Is Relevant … So Spy on EVERYONE

Government’s Interpretation of Spying Turns 200 Years of American Law On Its Head

Senators Wyden and Udall – both on the Senate Intelligence Committee, with full access to information on the spying program – have said that for at least 2 years that the government was using a “secret interpretation” of the Patriot Act which would shock Americans, because it provides a breathtakingly wide program of spying. And see this.

Complaining about the government is a key part of being American, the first amendment to the Constitution. But it seems like a bit of a trickier proposition these days, with the government listening to everything you say online. In the interest of preserving your freedoms and bolstering our fair nation, here is the full articulation of the deeply paranoid and complex life you must live in order to assure that the government leaves you alone.

Marking a milestone in the fight against cancer, Seattle Children’s Research Institute this afternoon reported that the first patient in a closely watched clinical trial has had a positive response to the treatment — which involves reprogramming the body’s infection-fighting T-cells to target cancer instead.

Researchers say Lynsie Conradi, 23, of Bellingham, Wash., has displayed a positive response to the therapy, with no current detection of leukemia cells after experiencing a second relapse of leukemia earlier this year

An atheist was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned
to her and said, "Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike
up a conversation with your fellow passenger."

The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total
... stranger, "What would you want to talk about?"

"Oh, I don't know," said the atheist. "How about why there is no God,
or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death?" as he smiled smugly.

"Okay," she said. "Those could be interesting topics but let me ask
you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same
stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns
out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?"

The atheist, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence,
thinks about it and says, "Hmmm, I have no idea." To which
the little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to discuss
God, Heaven and Hell, or life after death, when you don't know shit?"

And then she went back to reading her book

Germans Hail Snowden as NSA Evokes Stasi Seizing Lives of Others

The U.S. Patriot Act allows authorities to demand punctual access to information from U.S. companies. Reports leaked by Snowden said the NSA has been able to access servers of Google Inc., Facebook Inc., Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp. and others at any time since 2007. Other leaks pointed to the U.K.’s GCHQ tapping into and analyzing data from fiber-optic cables carrying Internet traffic, as well the U.S. bugging EU offices in Washington.

IRS Made ‘Policy Decision’ to ‘Legalize Illegal Aliens’

    http://cnsnews.com/news/article/ig-irs-made-policy-decision-legalize-illegal-aliens

(CNSNews.com) - The question of whether to legalize illegal aliens and put them on a pathway to citizenship may be the most controversial legislative issue facing the U.S. Congress this year.

But, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), seventeen years have already passed since the Internal Revenue Service made its own “policy decision” to “’legalize’ illegal aliens.”

That policy, made those many years ago, not only determined that the IRS would treat illegal aliens the same as legal immigrants and U.S. citizens, but also that the IRS would not hand over to federal immigration authorities information about employers who appeared to be hiring large numbers of illegal aliens and about illegal aliens who routinely filed false documents with the IRS.

    The Washington Times reported:

The legal watchdog Judicial Watch released an audio recording Thursday of a Department of Justice staffer urging Sanford, Fla., city officials and the minority advocacy group Dream Defenders to seek justice for Trayvon Martin, because “if a community perceives that there’s something wrong in the black community, there’s something wrong.”

“CRS is an arm of the department that we call the Peacemakers,” Thomas Battles, regional director of the DOJ’s Community Relations Service, said at a meeting at the Shiloh Church on April 19, 2012. “We work with communities where there is real or perceived racial tensions.”

“…When Trayvon happened, for many of us, it was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back,” he continued. “We had grown up in a state and environment where race is a way of life … We’re not from Sanford, but what Sanford represented to us was the very real problems going around this state and this country. We wanted to figure out how could we stand in solidarity, and how could we make this about not just justice for Trayvon, but using this moment and using the opportunity to honor his memory, to honor his spirit by working to bring down the various structures and the various systems that allow something like this to happen.”

Just when we thought this administration could go no lower – we find out they have been actively interfering with a Florida criminal case.

from prison during the 2011 revolution with help from the Palestinian militant
    group Hamas, officials said Thursday.

    Chief prosecutor Hesham Barakat has
received testimonies from a court in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia that will
be the base for an investigation by state security prosecutors into the
jailbreak by Mohammed Mursi and more than 30 other Muslim Brotherhood leaders,
according to the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were
not authorized to speak to the media.

    The question of whether Hamas
helped them escape amid the chaos surrounding the 2011 uprising that toppled
Hosni Mubarak has been debated in the media for months and proved a political
headache for Mursi during his one-year rule as Egypt's first freely elected
president. Critics in the opposition and judiciary have suggested that proof of
foreign intervention on Egyptian soil could lead to treason charges.

    The
issue has taken on more significance since Mursi was ousted on July 3 by the
military following a wave of protests in which millions of Egyptians called on
him to step down. The toppled Islamist leader has been kept at an undisclosed
Defense Ministry facility and no charges against him have been announcedhttp://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2013/07/12/Egypt-to-investigate-Mursi-for-2011-jailbreak.html

The Los Angeles Times has more:

Janet Napolitano, the U.S. secretary of Homeland Security and former governor of Arizona, is being named as the next president of the University of California system, in an unusual choice that brings a national-level politician to a position usually held by an academic. Her appointment also means the 10-campus system will be headed by a woman for the first time in its 145-year history.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - A self-help author who led a sweat lodge ceremony that left three people dead was paroled from prison on Friday after serving 85 percent of his two-year sentence for negligent homicide convictions.

James Arthur Ray, 55, left the state prison in Buckeye, near Phoenix, without speaking to journalists.

Jon Ray, his brother, previously said Ray has no immediate plans to resurrect his business, but he didn't rule out the possibility in the future, maintaining the deaths weren't his brother's fault.

Thirty-year-old Dustin Theoharis in Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, recovering from his twelfth surgery - this one to reconstruct his jaw. It’s unlikely he will ever fully recover from the barrage of bullets fired by police on Feb. 11, 2011. His attorney, Erik Heipt said that Theoharis suffered "a broken shoulder, 2 broken arms, broken legs, he had a compression fracture to his spine, damage to his liver and spleen.”

Theoharis wasn't the guy police were after. The King County Sheriff's deputy and Washington Department of Corrections officer who shot him were at the house to arrest a man who’d violated his parole. But in a search of the house after the shooting, they surprised Theoharis in the basement room he was renting.

Cole Harrison, who was at the house, described it this way: "They (the officers) rushed into that room like they were going to get somebody. I mean they rushed down there and then all of a sudden. Boom, boom, boom, boom.”

It’s estimated that the two officers fired more than 20 bullets; 16 hit Theoharis, who was lying in bed. The officers said they thought Theoharis was reaching for a gun. They later told investigators they weren’t sure how many bullets they fired.

"I thought he was going to try to kill us, there is no greater level of threat,” King County Deputy Aaron Thompson told investigators during an interview months after the shooting.

Theoharis didn’t have any weapons, but both the Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Corrections ruled the shooting justified and in compliance with policy.

The Circle Is Unbroken tour also celebrates the release of ISB's Live At Fillmore East, 1968 through Hux Records earlier this year, and will take in both well-known and rare material from the band's catalogue.

The dates follow a series of previous collaborations between the two, beginning with the ISB night A Very Cellular Song at the Barbican in 2010 and running through further shows and a 7" of Heron's 'Feast Of Stephen' (listen at the foot of the piece).

At 11 on a weeknight earlier this year, her work finished, a slim, pretty junior at the University of Pennsylvania did what she often does when she has a little free time. She texted her regular hookup — the guy she is sleeping with but not dating. What was he up to? He texted back: Come over. So she did. They watched a little TV, had sex and went to sleep.

Their relationship, she noted, is not about the meeting of two souls.

“We don’t really like each other in person, sober,” she said, adding that “we literally can’t sit down and have coffee.”
