Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the two Chechen brothers identified as the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, was a self-described “very religious” Muslim boxer who yearned for Chechen independence...
Jeff Bauman was still in intensive care, heavily sedated after surgery, but he had something he desperately needed to tell his brother. “He woke up under so much drugs, asked for a paper and pen and wrote, ‘bag, saw the guy, looked right at me,’” Chris Bauman said. Jeff, the ashen-faced, wheelchair-bound man in that iconic photo taken in the aftermath of Monday's Boston Marathon bombings, gave a description of the suspect to the FBI, telling them that he wore "a cap, sunglasses and a black jacket over a hooded sweatshirt." He told them that he locked eyes with the attacker as he placed the bomb-filled bag at the finish line — the bomb that took both of Bauman's legs http://now.msn.com/boston-marathon-bombings-jeff-bauman-wheelchair-victim-in-iconic-photo-helped-identify-attackers

The videos were sermons delivered by Feiz Mohammad, a former boxer of Lebanese descent who now preaches an extreme version of Sunni Islam known as Salafism. (Tsarnaev also appears to have been a boxer.) In 2007 Mohammed came under fire for a series of messages that called on young Muslims to become holy warriors. Three years later, the Dutch press reported that Mohammad had called for the beheading of Gert Wilders, a Dutch politician who has compared radical Islam to Nazi ideology.
Also on Tsarnaev’s apparent YouTube site were videos in Russian from Abdel al-Hamid al-Juhani. Mary Habeck, an expert in radical Islam at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies and a Russian speaker, said al-Juhani “is an important ideologue for al Qaeda in Chechnya and the Caucuses.”

People keep asking Joe Berti if he’s unlucky. A bomb exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon seconds after Berti finished the race. Two days later, he was in his home state of Texas when he saw a fertilizer plant explode near Waco.
But the Austinite says he’s far from unlucky — instead, he’s quite fortunate. Not only did he leave both explosions unscathed, but his wife, Amy, who was closer to the bombings in Boston than he was, was also unhurt.
Joe Berti was one of eight Austin-area runners who ran in Boston with Champions4Children, a charity that helps kids with rare or undiagnosed disorders and their families. He wife had just photographed the 43-year-old Berti, who wore bib number 25472, when the bomb went off.
Unscathed, Joe Berti then went back to work. On Wednesday, he was returning home on Interstate 35 from a daylong meeting in Dallas when he saw black smoke up ahead to his left. As he got closer, he saw — and felt — his second explosion in two days.
Berti said a massive force shook his car and he stopped to take a picture of the fireball. “My next reaction was to get out of there because something fell on the top of my car — some debris or something fell from the sky.”
Heard a bit of NPR this morning discussing the terror brothers. A number of the Boston professors and MIT students they interviewed opined along the lines of "this is what can happen when we aren't welcoming enough to immigrants." They all refused to opine on the Muslim angle (scared to?). An MIT Prof of Poli Sci said "One message is that each of us as individuals should try to do all we can to help immigrants feel at home."

The following information was provided by the Natick Police Department.
Wednesday, June 13
7:24 p.m.: Police received a call for teenagers causing a loud disturbance at the Natick Common, East Central Street. Police responded and arrested Michael Schultz, 20, listed as homeless. He was charged with assault and disorderly conduct.
7:42 p.m.: Loss prevention from Lord & Taylor called to report they had detained a shoplifter. Zubeidat K. Tsarnaeva, 45, of 410 Norfolk St., Apt. 3, Cambridge, was arrested and charged with larceny over $250 (women's clothing valued at $1,624), and two counts of malicious/wanton damage/defacement to property.

Ah. Nonetheless, there are certain classic scenes that have entered the vernacular. People who have never seen The Treasure of the Sierra Madre are familiar with "We don' need no steenkin' badges!"; people who have never seen Casablanca know "I am shocked, shocked..." and "Round up the usual suspects"; people who have never seen Citizen Kane know that "Rosebud" is the sled.
I sort of figured the grapefruit was in that class.
Prolly not---my list would be heavily weighted towards stuff from before 1965 or so. I am not a fan of most foreign films and I think most contempo film sucks big time.
What an amazing day for justice in Central Tejas. Former DA in my county arrested for misconduct in getting innocent man locked up for 25 years:
Former Williamson County District Attorney Ken Anderson was arrested and booked into jail, then quickly released, for the “intentionally harmful act” of hiding favorable evidence to secure Michael Morton’s 1987 conviction for murder, the court of inquiry found.
And the currently sitting DA in Travis County (Austin) pleads guilty to DUI and gets 45 days in jail. But she still won't resign.
The results of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg’s blood test show she had a blood alcohol level of .239 when she was arrested for drunken driving last week, according to a statement issued by the county attorney’s office.
Lehmberg was sentenced to 45 days in jail, a $4,000 fine and a 180-day license suspension on Friday.
I lasted a minute and a half into that filthy piece of crap video. I have never understood the appeal of Public Enemy, nor the people who think that Flavor Flav is amusing.
You are conflating the two stories. The former DA (now a judge!) who railroaded Michael Morton is facing felony charges of tampering with evidence and contempt of court. He could do some real time. What's amazing is that Morton got out of jail (thanks to the Innocence Project) and the DA was held accountable at all.
You really can't make this stuff up! 63 year old District Attorney in the State Capitol..
Jailers placed Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg in restraints early Saturday morning after her drunken driving arrest the night before to protect her from harming herself, according to jail records.
Lehmberg had been placed in an isolation cell for protective custody but she refused several orders to stop kicking the cell door and was put in “the emergency restraint chair,” the records say.
According to an inmate incident report, Lehmberg also resisted a pat-down, refused to comply with officers, tried to scratch and grab an officer’s hand and yelled.
She was handcuffed and “leg-ironed,” according to the report.
So much for President Obama’s election mandate and the notion that Democrats are concerned about privacy. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the controversial Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), which has been caught in the centuries old debate over privacy vs. security. The House passage isn’t particularly interesting, since, like last year, CISPA may die in the Senate. The big news: more than twice as many Democrats voted for CISPA this year than in 2012 (92 vs. 42), meaning that twice as many Democrats show less concern for privacy and less obedience to the White House (which has threatened to veto the bill).
Democrats have stereotypically been the guardian of civil liberties, while Republicans took up the mantel of security hawks. Not so, today.
Even worse for the White House, Democrats did not heed the White House’s warnings that the current bill did not do enough to protect privacy.
CISPA, which would encourage information sharing between Internet companies and intelligence agencies, has received a mixed reaction from Silicon Valley. Google and Facebook have shown ambivalence, IBM supports it, and Reddit and other nonprofit groups vehemently oppose it.
Either way, this does not bode well for those who believed Obama had control over Democrats, or that liberals were guardians of civil liberties.
Apparently they won't be letting her out on work-release to prosecute cases either!
The district attorney’s office has released a statement, saying that the operational aspects of the office will be handled by senior staff while District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg is in jail, “the same as when the officeholder is away from the office.”
The statement says the office will have no further comment.
Two Chechen Islamist terrorists have succeeded in turning Boston, America’s cradle of liberty, into a prison. Just when we had gotten used to obscene lines and searches at airports as the price we pay for safety, the lockdown of Boston illustrates the extent to which civil liberties are at stake in the war on terror. Since 9/11, there has been an ongoing debate about the protection of the rights of suspected terrorists. But today’s events show that its is not just the civil liberties of terrorists at stake, but also those of millions of innocent civilians. http://www.volokh.com/2013/04/19/the-american-athens-becomes-a-prison-city/

If Boston is “closed” for just six hours, that is 175000 man days of functional house arrest; roughly as many as would be required to keep everyone in Guantanamo confined for a year or two. No doubt the police overreaction will be severely criticized in coming days, but largely on policy grounds, not civil rights grounds.
Yet such freakouts are nothing compared to what is in store if the the Marathon bombing means that Chechen jihadis has come to U.S. shores. The Chechens mounted one of the most vicious terror campaigns ever against Russia in the 1990s, blowing up apartment buildings, and launching massive attacks on theaters and even schools. They are known as among the most violent and dedicated terrorists in the world. They can be found fighting in Libya, Syria and every other major jihadi campaign. Though usually they have to sneak into the target countries, rather than coming on a visa as the Boston bombers apparently did.)
Russia only succeeded in suprresing the Chechen Islamists with extremely brutal tactics that would never find support in the U.S – essentially leveling the Chechen capital. Yet dealing with such a threat would also be impossible with a politically correct approach to counter-terror that, for example, turns away from talking frankly about the terrorists profiles and motives.
As more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect. The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities - the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation.
As the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman noted in his message to President Obama, the Czech Republic is an active and reliable partner of the United States in the fight against terrorism. We are determined to stand side by side with our allies in this respect, there is no doubt about that.
In an interview with Russia Today Friday, Tsarnaeva said that Tamerlan Tsarnaev got involved in "religious politics" five years ago, and that the FBI had previously contacted her about her son's activities.
"He was controlled by the FBI, like for three, five years," she said. "They knew what my son was doing, they knew what actions and what sites on the Internet he was going [to], they used to come...and talk to me...they were telling me that he was really a serious leader and they were afraid of him."
"How could this happen?...They were controlling every step of him, and they are telling today that this is a terrorist attack," she added.
A spokesperson for the FBI told Business Insider Friday that the agency would be putting out a statement "shortly" regarding its previous contact with either of the Tsarnaev suspects. The spokesperson would not confirm or deny that the agency had had any previous contact.
Tsarnaeva doubled down on her statements later in the interview, insisting that her sons were innocent, and had been "set up" by the FBI:
geees our gubment fucked up again....a foreign government asked our gubment to check one of these bastards out. our gubment says no problem with him. I go to the barn
One has a nose that looks like a beak - a fat beak but a beak...Whereas the younger one he a snout that is not even close to being a beak...It looks more like a blob of clay on his face...
remember the jihadi who wrapped up the important bits very carefully before exploding because he thought he was going to need them in the flesh where he was going? idiots...
well you'd think the crazy aunt and the more well actual stable uncle would have saw that, not too mention the father that is threatening to keeel you all if you hurt his smart son
Went outside when we got the all clear and I heard a lot of gun shots...then coming back in heard a short burst of fire...inside again...seems to be quieting down...

They all refused to opine on the Muslim angle (scared to?). An MIT Prof of Poli Sci said "One message is that each of us as individuals should try to do all we can to help immigrants feel at home."
ReplyDeleteIt was not satire.

grapefruit? eh?
ReplyDeleteahahahhaa
ReplyDeletepbird---you are not familiar with Cagney's famous "grapefruit in the kisser" scene from Public Enemy?
ReplyDeleteWe were talking over at C2, and the pun/connection came to me. Robomonkey ran it up, quick like.
ReplyDeletepbird has not watched all that many films
ReplyDeleteAh.
ReplyDeleteI sort of figured the grapefruit was in that class.
it is
ReplyDeleteIt should be, I am a little bit of a media innocent.

ha we see if our lists match
ReplyDeleteahaha
Prolly not---my list would be heavily weighted towards stuff from before 1965 or so. I am not a fan of most foreign films and I think most contempo film sucks big time.

What an amazing day for justice in Central Tejas. Former DA in my county arrested for misconduct in getting innocent man locked up for 25 years:
ReplyDeleteFormer Williamson County District Attorney Ken Anderson was arrested and booked into jail, then quickly released, for the “intentionally harmful act” of hiding favorable evidence to secure Michael Morton’s 1987 conviction for murder, the court of inquiry found.
http://www.statesman.com/news/news/ken-anderson-court-of-inquiry-resumes/nXRLm/
And the currently sitting DA in Travis County (Austin) pleads guilty to DUI and gets 45 days in jail. But she still won't resign.
The results of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg’s blood test show she had a blood alcohol level of .239 when she was arrested for drunken driving last week, according to a statement issued by the county attorney’s office.
Lehmberg was sentenced to 45 days in jail, a $4,000 fine and a 180-day license suspension on Friday.
http://www.statesman.com/news/news/local/lehmberg-expected-in-court-friday/nXQ9C/
45 days for 25 years does not seem equitable!
ReplyDeletemost of mine is before 1965
ReplyDeletebut I like some foreign films
I lasted a minute and a half into that filthy piece of crap video. I have never understood the appeal of Public Enemy, nor the people who think that Flavor Flav is amusing.
ReplyDeleteYou are conflating the two stories. The former DA (now a judge!) who railroaded Michael Morton is facing felony charges of tampering with evidence and contempt of court. He could do some real time. What's amazing is that Morton got out of jail (thanks to the Innocence Project) and the DA was held accountable at all.
ReplyDeleteohhhh kay
ReplyDeleteI would welcome that.
ReplyDeleteYou really can't make this stuff up! 63 year old District Attorney in the State Capitol..
ReplyDeleteJailers placed Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg in restraints early Saturday morning after her drunken driving arrest the night before to protect her from harming herself, according to jail records.
ReplyDeleteDemocrats have stereotypically been the guardian of civil liberties, while Republicans took up the mantel of security hawks.
Either way, this does not bode well for those who believed Obama had control over Democrats, or that liberals were guardians of civil liberties.

the emergency restraint chair!!
ReplyDeleteAI has one in her living room.
Apparently they won't be letting her out on work-release to prosecute cases either!
ReplyDeleteThe district attorney’s office has released a statement, saying that the operational aspects of the office will be handled by senior staff while District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg is in jail, “the same as when the officeholder is away from the office.”
The statement says the office will have no further comment.
It did kind of stick up like a rotten stump.

The American Athens Becomes a Prison City
ReplyDeleteEugene Kontorovich • April 19, 2013 10:55 am
Two Chechen Islamist terrorists have succeeded in turning Boston, America’s cradle of liberty, into a prison. Just when we had gotten used to obscene lines and searches at airports as the price we pay for safety, the lockdown of Boston illustrates the extent to which civil liberties are at stake in the war on terror. Since 9/11, there has been an ongoing debate about the protection of the rights of suspected terrorists. But today’s events show that its is not just the civil liberties of terrorists at stake, but also those of millions of innocent civilians.

Since 9/11, there has been an ongoing debate about the protection of the rights of suspected terrorists.

Listen up Doofuses!
ReplyDeleteAs more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect.

ReplyDeleteMother Of Boston Bombing Suspects Says FBI Was In Contact With Her Son
ReplyDeletehttp://www.businessinsider.com/tsarnaev-brothers-mother-fbi-boston-bombing-2013-4
