Denying Reform At the UN Human Rights Council

The nation is witnessing two ideas of how to proceed on the corrupt UN Human Rights Council: to join the body as an equal member with Cuba and China as the Obama administration desires, or to pass a Republican bill withholding funds until the council has earned them by reforming itself.

On May 12, 2009, the United Nations General Assembly voted to fill 18 seats on the UN Human Rights Council. The United States chose to run for a three-year term on the council for the first time and was elected, joining such human rights "exemplars" as Cuba, China, Saudi Arabia, and Russia. Obama administration officials, including UN Ambassador Susan Rice, believe that they can bring about reform of this dysfunctional council from within. That's not going to happen.

We will be outvoted every time because of the way the council is presently structured. Republican Congressman Cliff Stearns, R-FL, has a much better idea. Cut off U.S. funding for the council, he says, until it truly mends its ways. On the same day that the United States won its seat and thereby legitimized the council by our membership, Congressman Stearns introduced a bill (H.R. 2376) in the House of Representatives that called out the council for the despicable body it truly is. From the outset of the Human Rights Council's existence in 2006, it was clear that it was going to provide "a table for tyrants," in the words of former president of the Czech Republic and human rights activist Vaclav Havel.

A federal appeals judge late on Tuesday agreed to temporarily halt the sale of Chrysler's assets to Fiat, a move that could stall Chrysler's exit from bankruptcy proceedings, the Washington Post reports this morning. The decision is a big victory for some small-time lenders, a group of Indiana pension funds that hold a relatively puny $42 million worth of Chrysler's massive $6.9 billion debt load. According to the Washington Post, the group "claims the terms of the sale violate their rights as secured lenders by limiting their ability to recover all of their original investment in the company." Opening arguments for the challenge will be heard Friday. The Wall Street Journal, though, says Chrysler did win a small victory. "Any appeals normally go first to a lower, district court. Going directly to the circuit court allows them to skip a step and speed up the process if the company prevails," the newspaper writes, adding though that Chrysler's initial hopes of exiting bankruptcy this week are now dashed.

FHFA Director James Lockhart talked about three potential roles that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could fulfill moving forward: liquidity provider of last resort of the secondary market for mortgage-backed securities (MBS) and other asset-backed securities, guarantor or catastrophic risk insurer of the credit risk of conventional MBS, or provider of subsidies for increasing the supply or reducing the cost of mortgage credit to targeted borrowers.

KAZAKHSTAN: CONFLICT-OF-INTEREST DEBATE FLARES IN WASHINGTON

The government of Kazakhstan is paying an influential Washington think tank to write a series of reports and policy recommendations for the US and Kazakhstani governments concerning Astana’s upcoming role as chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

The think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), has partnered with a smaller Washington organization, the Institute for New Democracies (IND), to create the US-Kazakhstan Task Force. The task force’s goal is the preparation of policy recommendations that aim to make Astana’s 2010 OSCE chairmanship as productive as possible, said Margarita Assenova, the executive director of IND.

But many observers, including some task force participants, contend the project appears to be an attempt by the Kazakhstani government to influence Astana’s image in Washington. The task force has issued its first report, which one participant in the process said "could have been written by the Kazakh Embassy." Others involved in the process have described it as "a complete puff piece" and "absurd, totally pro-government," according to one person who was at the last task force meeting and who spoke to EurasiaNet on condition of anonymity. Today's update from Stratfor Research describes the background of a recent attack on U.S. soldiers in Little Rock, Arkansas. One soldier was killed and another critically wounded by a lone gunman who began shooting from a pickup truck.

Police quickly apprehended a suspect, Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, a 21-year-old African-American man and convert to Islam. In his vehicle, police recovered an SKS rifle and two handguns. Blues Legend Koko Taylor Dead at 80:

Koko Taylor, the Grammy Award-winning "Queen of the Blues," died this afternoon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital of complications from surgery, according to Marc Lipkin of Alligator Records. She was 80.

Taylor, born Coral Walton on a sharecropper's farm outside Memphis, came to Chicago in 1952 and worked as a house cleaner. She began to sit in with blues bands and in the early 1960s signed a contract with Chess Records after being approached by Willie Dixon. In 1965 she recorded her signature song, "Wang Dang Doodle."

She sang that song at her final performance last month in Memphis at the Blues Music Awards after being honored as Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year.

Well, well, well, lookee here. Fed Chairman Bernanke has finally figured out that the Messiah's outrageous deficits just might have a a negative impact on economic growth:

Bernanke said large U.S. budget deficits threaten financial stability and the government can’t continue indefinitely to borrow at the current rate to finance the shortfall. “Unless we demonstrate a strong commitment to fiscal sustainability in the longer term, we will have neither financial stability nor healthy economic growth,” Bernanke said in testimony to lawmakers today. “Maintaining the confidence of the financial markets requires that we, as a nation, begin planning now for the restoration of fiscal balance.”

Now, we all know that Obama has absolutely no intention of cutting spending, other than for the military, of course. So that leaves the options of raise taxes, or keep spending (and borrowing) until the economy totally implodes.

My best guess is he will start down the pathway of keeping spending but will eventually adopt some confiscatory tax rates to prop up his budgets. Either way, those who have managed to save a dollar here and there over the years can kiss them goodbye. You will lose purchasing power indirectly through hyperinflation, or directly through confiscatory taxes.

If you think I'm exaggerating, go ask Hugo Chavez. Hugo thinks both he and Castro are likely more conservative than Obama.

On his way to Saudi Arabia with the intent of strengthening US relations with the Islamic world, President Barrack Obama said that the United States is “one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. The president made this assertion in the course of an interview with Laura Haim on Canal Plus, the French television station. Is America really one of the largest Muslim countries in the world?

The question begs an answer.

According to many estimates, America’s Muslim population climbed from 1.6 million in 1995 to 8 million in 2005, making Islam the second largest religious body in the country.1 The true number may be substantially lower or higher since the U. S. Census Bureau refuses to collect data on religious identification. In 2008, the Pew Research Center estimated that the Islamic population of America is 2.35 million. But Pew researchers admit that this figure is flawed since it does not take into account immigrant and poor black Muslims.2 The telephone survey was conducted strictly with landlines and failed to take into account the fact that nearly 50% of Americans and age 18-35 and nearly 100% of the illegal immigrants use cell phones exclusively.3

Muslim organizations affix the figure from 8 to 10 million in 2008 based on more accurate measures, including mosque attendance. Talal al-Haj, UN bureau chief of the Middle East Broadcasting Center, concurs with this estimate. In any case, the growth of Islam in America during the past decade has been both monumental and alarming.

Islam has permeated nearly every aspect of American life, and the full extent of the permeation remains an X factor. But this much has come to light. In 1990, less than 600 mosques existed in the home of the free and the land of the brave. By 2000, that number had climbed to 1,400. This figure failed to reflect the Muslim houses of worship that had sprouted up in low-rent storefronts, abandoned warehouses, Middle Eastern social clubs, private residences, college campuses, and second story business space. By 2007, a consensual estimate of the number of mosques in America exceeds 6,000.

This would be all well and good in the global age of diversity and multiculturalism, save for the fact that eighty percent of the mosques were established by sheikhs from Saudi Arabia, who shelled out more than ninety billion dollars in recent years to bring about the conversion of millions of Americans to Wahhabism, the most radical form of Islam.4 Many of these mosques called for support of the jihad, the establishment of a universal caliphate, and the destruction of western civilization. Several sheltered the operatives of 9/11.

Islamists had infiltrated not only the prison system, the military, the highest recesses of academia and college administration, but also every branch of American government, including the FBI and CIA. No less than their counterparts in Europe, the American Muslims were making demands and, no less than in Europe, the demands were being met. Muslim special agents in the FBI insisted upon separate potties from “infidel agents”; Muslim teachers in public schools, while denigrating Christianity, promoted Islam by having their students recite prayers and verses from the Quran on prayer rugs; Muslim activists brought about the shelving of a PBS documentary “Islam vs. Islamists” and the censorship of such popular programs as “Touched by an Angel”; and Muslim women called for the expulsion of all men, including male lifeguards, from public pools and parks at certain hours of the day so that they could swim and stroll without fear of any violation to their sense of modesty. (The latter demand was made and heeded at Harvard University, where the female Muslim students demanded the expulsion of men from the campus athletic center at certain hours during the week).5

What was occurring throughout the country was typified by a seemingly trivial even that occurred just before Christmas 2003. Muslim community leaders in California brought about the change in the name of a Catholic high school football team in San Juan Capistrano from the Crusaders to the Lions. Meanwhile, twenty miles up the road in Irvine, the newly created Muslim Football League announced the emergence of such tenderly named teams as the Intifada, the Mujahadeen, the Saracens, and the Sword of Allah.6

Other developments were infinitely more disturbing, including the perpetuation of Islamic attacks on American soil- - the killings by the Beltway snipers, the “honor killings” in Scottsdale and Louisville, the attack on the Jewish Federation Center in Seattle, the shooting rampage at a mall in Salt Lake City, and this week’s assassination of soldiers at an Army recruiting station by Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad — a 24-year-old Little Rock resident formerly known as Carlos Bledsoe The fact that such crimes were committed with cries of “Allahu Akhbar” gained scant mention in the press. Few impeccably coiffured national news personalities, let alone local law enforcement officials, wished to manifest the slightest symptom of the country’s newest and most dreaded sociopathic disorder: Islamophobia.

“The teachings of Islam are good and peaceful,” former President George W. Bush proclaimed theday after 9/11, “and those who commit evil in the name of Allah blaspheme the name of Allah.” This mantra was recited by federal officials, including the employees of the newly created Department of Homeland Security, and egregious Christian clerics, including Rick Warren and Robert Schuller.

But Islam never was a religion of peace. Islamic history, from the birth of the prophet Mohammed to the rise of al Qaeda, represents a history of unredeemed violence and suppression. What’s more, at this writing, every bloody conflict within every region of the world, from Chechnya to Somalia, from Indonesia to Iraq, from Afghanistan to Argentina, from the Balkans to the Philippines, bears one common denominator: Islam.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. I knew nothing about manufacturing cars, but neither did anyone else among Ceausescu's top men. However, my father had spent most of his life running the service department of the General Motors affiliate in Bucharest.

My job at the time was as head of the Romanian industrial espionage program. Ceausescu tasked me to mediate the purchase of a minimum, basic license for a small car from a major Western manufacturer, and then to steal everything else needed to produce the car.

The U.S. Energy Department is working quickly to finalize $18.5 billion in loan guarantees that the government hopes will spur the first wave of new nuclear plants in the United States in three decades, Energy Secretary Steven Chu said on Monday.
